हरेः पदाहतिः श्लाघ्या न श्लाघ्यं खररोहणम्।
स्पर्धापि विदुषा युक्ता न युक्ता मूर्खमित्रता॥
सुभाषितरत्नभण्डागारे॥।
hareḥ padāhatiḥ ślāghyā na ślāghyaṁ khararohaṇam|
spardhāpi viduṣā yuktā na yuktā mūrkhamitratā||
subhāṣitaratnabhaṇḍāgāre|||
It is a matter of pride and worthy of praise, even if we approach a lion and get kicked by it ..
However mounting atop a donkey in all pomp and ceremony is not an achievement worthy of any adulation..
Even enmity with a learned and strong person is worth it..
But friendship with an idiot is not of any value..
ഹരേഃ പദാഹതിഃ ശ്ലാഘ്യാ ന ശ്ലാഘ്യം ഖരരോഹണം।
സ്പര്ധാപി വിദുഷാ യുക്താ ന യുക്താ മൂര്‍ഖമിത്രതാ॥
സുഭാഷിതരത്നഭണ്ഡാഗാരേ॥।
ഒരു സിംഹത്തിന്റെ മുന്നില്‍ ചെന്ന് പെട്ട് അതിന്റെ ശക്തിയേറിയ ഒരു തൊഴി ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങുന്നതാണ് ഒരു കഴുതയുടെ പുറത്തു കയറി ആഘോഷപൂര്‍വ്വം സവാരി ചെയ്യുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രശംസനീയം.
ഒരു വിദ്വാനുമായി തര്‍ക്കത്തിലും വിമര്‍ശനപരമായ വാഗ്വാദങ്ങളിലും കൂടെയെങ്കിലും സമ്പര്‍ക്കം പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നത് ഒരു വിഡ്ഢിയുമായി ചങ്ങാത്തം കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ എന്തുകൊണ്ടും ഭേദമാണ്
