Comforts and misery comes and go alternately

कस्यैकान्तं सुखमुपनतो दुःखं एकान्ततो वा।

नीचैर् गच्छत्युपरि च दशा चक्रनेमिक्रमेण॥

Kalidasa’s Meghadootam 2/49

kasyaikāntaṁ sukhamupanato duḥkhaṁ ekāntato vā|

nīcair gacchatyupari ca daśā cakranemikrameṇa||

Who can have whole of his lifetime filled with comfort and nothing but comfort? And whose life can always be filled with misery alone? Comforts and misery comes and go alternately.. just like the parts of rim of a wheel of a cart rubbing with the ground and then moving to the top and repeating this again as it rolls on.

Even astrologers say. No one can be continuously happy for more than thirty years at a stretch. Similarly he cannot be unhappy too for such a long period.

कस्य नरस्य for which man सुखं comforts, welfare एकान्तं उपनतं obtained, filled with , one sidedly, one pronged एकान्ततः one sidedly, without change, without interruption दुःखं misery, sorrow उपनतं वा स्यात् is obtained, is filled with दशा one’s station in life चक्रनेमि the parts of the rim of the wheel क्रमेण in order, following one another, alternately नीचैः going down उपरि moving up च to गच्छति going on

കസ്യൈകാന്തം സുഖമുപനതോ ദുഃഖം ഏകാന്തതോ വാ।

നീചൈര് ഗച്ഛത്യുപരി ച ദശാ ചക്രനേമിക്രമേണ॥

ജീവിതത്തിൽ എന്നും സുഖവും സന്തോഷവും അല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമില്ലാത്ത സ്ഥിതി തുടർച്ചയായി ആർക്കെങ്കിലും ലഭിക്കുമോ? അതുപോലെ കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും വിഷമങ്ങളും മാത്രം എന്നും കൂട്ടായി നിൽക്കുന്ന ജീവിതവും ആർക്കെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടാവുമോ?

സാധ്യമല്ല.

ആരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലും കുറേക്കാലം വെല്ലുവിളികളും അല്ലലുകളും ഉണ്ടാവും. മറ്റു ചില നേരങ്ങളിൽ സുഖവും സന്തോഷവും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും എല്ലാം ജീവിതത്തിൽ കടന്നു വരും. ഉരുളുന്ന ചക്രത്തിന്‍റെ വിളിമ്പുകൾ ചില നേരങ്ങളിൽ ഭൂമിയിൽ ഉരസുന്നു. ചക്രം മുന്നോട്ടു ചലിക്കുമ്പോൾ അത്തരം ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഉയരങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോകും. അപ്പോൾ ചക്രത്തിന്‍റെ വേറൊരു വശം നിലത്ത് ഉരസും. ചക്രം തിരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും. അതുപോലെ തട്ടലും മുട്ടലും വരും; പിന്നീട് ഇല്ലാതാവും. പിന്നെയും ഇത് തന്നെ തുടരും.

ജ്യോതിഷികൾ പറയാറുണ്ട്. മുപ്പതു വർഷം തുടർച്ചയായി സുഖം അനുഭവിക്കുകയോ കഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരാളും ഉണ്ടാവില്ല എന്ന്.
