they will surely affect and cause damage to your sons or great grandsons.

नाधर्मश्चरितो राजन् सद्यः फलति गौरिव।

पुत्रेषु वा नप्तृषु वा न चेदात्मनि पश्यति॥

महाभारते॥

nādharmaścarito rājan sadyaḥ phalati gauriva|

putreṣu vā naptṛṣu vā na cedātmani paśyati||

mahābhārate||

राजन् oh king चरितः done, perpetrated अधर्मं acts of non-righteousness, heinous activities गौः इव just like tending a cow सद्यः immediately न फलति does not show result

आत्मनि if in ones of personal matter न पश्यति चेत् if not seen पुत्रेषु in sons नप्तृषु or in great grandson वा पश्यति it would be seen

Often, the evil consequences of deviation from the path of virtue would not be seen or felt immediately. The consequences may be felt later. It is just like a cow being fed with grass and fodder. The milk will not come immediately. Oh king, be warned that if the evil consequences arising out of evil activities deviated from the path of dharma does not affect you now, they will surely affect and cause damage to your sons or great grandsons.

It would be worthwhile for persons perpetrating sinful activities to take note of the fact that similar to bequeathing wealth for the enjoyment of children and grandchildren, unknowingly we are accumulating the possessing of our sins too for the consumption and expiation by our sons and grandsons.

गौः can mean earth too. If that meaning is taken, the slokam implies that the fruits of cultivation done on earth would not manifest immediately but would take time. The seeds or saplings have to be planted, watered, nurtured and nourished and they would yield fruits in due course.

In the same manner the seeds of sin generated on the point of commission would grow and engulf even the future generations.

നാധർമശ്ചരിതോ രാജൻ സദ്യഃ ഫലതി ഗൌരിവ।

പുത്രേഷു വാ നപ്തൃഷു വാ ന ചേദാത്മനി പശ്യതി॥

ധർമ്മത്തിന്‍റെ വഴിയിൽ നിന്ന് വിട്ടുമാറി ക്രൂര പ്രവൃത്തികൾ ചെയ്യുന്ന വ്യക്തികൾ ഒരു കാര്യം ഓർക്കുന്നത് നന്നായിരിക്കും. ചെയ്ത ദുഷ്പ്രവൃത്തിയുടെ ഫലം അപ്പോള്‍ത്തന്നെ അനുഭവിക്കേണം എന്നില്ല. ഒരാള്‍ പശുവിനു പുല്ലും തീറ്റയും കൊടുക്കുന്നു. പക്ഷെ പാൽ ലഭിക്കാൻ കുറെ സമയം എടുക്കും. അതുപോലെ ഒരാൾ ചെയ്തു കൂട്ടുന്ന ദുഷ്കർമ്മങ്ങളുടെ പരിണിത ഫലങ്ങളും കുറച്ചു സമയം കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷം ആണെങ്കിലും കണക്കിൽ ഒരു പിഴവും പറ്റാതെ തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും. രാജാവേ, ഒരാളുടെ ദുഷ്കർമ്മങ്ങളുടെ ഫലം അയാൾക്ക് കിട്ടിയില്ലെങ്കിൽ പോലും അവ അയാളുടെ മക്കൾക്കും പേരക്കുട്ടികൾക്കും തീർച്ചയായും എത്തിച്ചേരും.

ദുഷ്കൃത്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുന്നവർ ഒന്ന് ഇരുത്തി ചിന്തിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. മക്കൾക്കും പേരമക്കൾക്കും സ്വത്ത് സമ്പാദിച്ചു വയ്ക്കുന്നത് പോലെ തന്നെ നാം ദുരിതങ്ങളും ചേർത്തു വയ്ക്കാറുണ്ട്.
