Exposure to extreme provocative situations and managing to get out of such situations unscathed physically, mentally and morally, was a part of training and acclimatization to an ideal life in India..
Among the Jaina ascetics, walking out in the open without dress, and exposing sensitive parts of the body, and the mind too to all adverse provocations is a part the test of their spiritual achievements ..
But it is believed by expert scholars that the conflicting emotions and physical urges just peel off once the threshold of realization is crossed, and it is a moot question whether such controls are absolutely necessary to reach near that threshold or whether a better disciplined person has greater chance to attain the threshold....
These ideas are for those who want to tread the path of spiritual realization
Anyway, training the mind to behave itself is good for all from the social angle too
