These things happen to most lower middleclass youngsters. In countries like India, we have absolutely no control over our careers. In spite of the successful career as a tax collecter, still I feel I would have been happy as a teacher of electronis, or sanskrit ore even a a professional brahmin priest. The partiality of the Gurus was phenomenal in every generation. Take the case of the trio Drona, Arjuna and Ekalavya...
life is the great teacher, and our lifetime is the stay in school. I know I was ahead of my teachers in my classes...and my academic career never did anything for me. But I made myself, reasonable mastery over six languages, computer literacy, a senior post in government as a tax collector, read a few thousand books and I have shared my experiences in so many words in so many fora. I feel it all depends on to what extent you depend on the schools for equipping yourself.
