That is the intoxication with Krishna

On one midnight in a winter, the young lad, that Darling Krishna, stood reclining across the trunk of a tree in the banks of Yamuna started playing his flute. The Gopis, Gopas, the cows of Gokula and all the moving and unmoving beings around forgot themselves and whoever could move made a headway in the direction from where the song came. For them there was no stress, no strain, no thought and even no mind at that moment. That is the intoxication with Krishna Where can be any stress.

words are really fun

words are really fun.. let us see some words ending in -un and prefixed with different single alphabets

bun.. defence against hunger

fun....defence against depression

gun.. defence against physical attack

nun... usually should not require defence but can be a defence against sin

pun...defence against brashness.. tell something offensive without appearing to be offensive .. fun which is rubbed in not always pleasingly..

run... the best defence for anyone chased but police, dog, snake, wife, .. also effective defence against fat cholesterol, diabetes..

sun.. the best defence against cold, ailment and even death

Maybe there are more -uns..

there is a fallacy in judging what is right and what is not right

Now I am beyond both encomia and insults. Just waiting on the railway platform for the train to arrive and taking me for the journey to infinity, be it to heaven or hell.

However, there is a fallacy in judging what is right and what is not right. For any living being survival, as long as the soul and body are keeping company is the best policy.

God appears to have made his world with a plan that the stronger entities or persons will gobble up the weaker ones. The bigger one tries to conquer the smaller one, and that seems to be the right action of nature. The smaller one attempts to resist for its own survival applying all strength and resources he could muster. That too is natural. Therefore, in life, there is conflict between right and right on too many counts. That conflict is natural.

Life is dynamic. People cannot live in their own isolated compartments expecting others not to interfere.

Fight and win, or fight and perish- only these two choices are there before us.

We are binding ourselves with unseen ties of assumed obligations. We just weep in futility over non-performance and non-reciprocation.

They make rules for religion and social transactions keeping in mind convenience of all the followers. However, those who occupy positions that would enable them to sabotage us emotionally are using diverse methods effectively. They are right in their own way, because that is convenient for them. However, the persons who are to bear the brunt such demands are right in refusing to fall prey. In addition, if someone just allows others to make use of him that way then he has, for all practical purposes, lost his right to complain..

Then I do not believe that mending fences, embracing, and crying after perpetrating all bad things, is an ideal solution, or a desirable curse adopted in conflict-management. It is even worse if one tries to mend fences and the person on the other side of the fence refuses such renewal of relation and the former complains about it.

No relation is unavoidable or inevitable. See, we survive and live even when our most beloved persons die.

It is always better to form views after considering the state of mind of parties other than you in any transaction. You need not agree with them, you are free to be on your own, but once there is a frank appraisal of the situation, things can be better. The dictum, “agree to disagree”, is of great significance.

No one gives us pleasure or pain. Our crooked mind says that others are causing us good or give us misery. Again it is a fallacy to assume that we do things all by ourselves. The fate or Karma just binds the world.

सुखस्य दुःखस्य न कोपि दाता परो ददातीति कुबुद्धिरेषा अहं करोमि इति वृथा अभिमानः स्वकर्म सूत्र ग्रथितो हि लोकः says Adhyatma Ramayanam..
(this statement comes from Lakshman during a coversatiion with th Nishada chieftain Guha)
All that one can have is an unprejudiced mind that is not opinionated. That is not easy, I agree.

God definitely is not an idiot.

God definitely is not an idiot. He knows where to draw a line. The best of the managers on earth are struggling to keep order in respect of a handful number of people or situations supposedly under their control. However, the Master manages the whole universe and more without any flaw. Therefore, He must be capable of evaluating, balancing and thereafter attending to the prayers, demands, claims and entreaties originating from us. For a believer, the solemn belief and Faith is that God is always just and fair. Our claims and prayers are often similar to the mercy petitions to the Governor or the President by people who have been received punishment of death. We are applying to the Supreme one to have mercy, and to commute the ultimate punishment. The one who prays has only the right and choice to pray. If a person demands that his prayer requires mandatory consideration, and that he should get a decree as per his own wish, then he is just an idiot.

We seem to think that God is also an idiot just because we see so many idiots around, even among believers. It is not Gods fault.

In addition, we should never mix up prayers, spirituality etc., with superstitions.

Conducting of a pooja or japam may help us only if there is no detriment inuring to anyone else when God answers such entreaties.

Of course, God is merciful. We kick and berate our mother or father and then go to them and they accept us. God also will do that because He is father and mother to all of us. But neither the parents nor the God are fools.

Even a man with average intelligence knows it when there is duplicity, honey on lips and venom on heart. Do you think God will not spot it?

my translations

My translation from Sanskrit to English will not be word to word.

I know fairly well the limitations of other modern languages vis- a- vis Sanskrit.

Normally I ensure two things.
First, I ensure that I have understood reasonably well the material I take up for translation.
Secondly, if I read the translated product, at least I should understand what I have written and what I intended to convey.

If there are too sacred mantrams like some parts of Vedas, and some secrets of Tantric worship etc, we should never try to be translate them and I never touch them for translation.

The instructions regarding the secret mantrams are that even if texts or notes prepared during training by a very learned guru to a devoted sishya, such notes should be got destroyed, by water or fire once the purpose is served .

Sure, the material I usually attempt to translate would never come under that category and would exclude all matters that the tradition and culture of India would not permit.

The style and aesthetics of English and Oriental Languages are at variance.

Besides, if a translation that is grammatically and etymologically faithful but not compatible with the style of English is attempted, the results could be often very bad or even disastrous..

Of course, I do not say we should not be faithful to the original text in all possible ways, but it should not affect the spirit of the translated material.

It is easy to take each and every word apiece, and translate it according to tense, gender, number, case, etc.(According to anta linga vibhakti vachanam.. अन्त लिङ्ग विभक्ति वचनं ) but the results are more likely to be funny. Moreover, no one could really read it. We can go for Vrittam, Svaram, Varnam etc too but except great scholars no one would have any use for it. In addition, I have not enough learning that would make me bold to present my translation skills to real masters.

If a devotee wants to have a plain meaning of what he recites in Sanskrit, my commentary may be of some use. The purpose of my translation is simply that.

I do not claim perfection, and if I attempt to explain some of the terms with grammar and also the stories and fables behind them, even explaining four or five lines can take days.. It is beyond my endurance. Besides, I am not that much learned too.

Then I will never type or speak a thing about which I am not sure that it is correct to a reasonable extent. In addition, there is no assurance that the tip of my fingers hit the correct key or the correct letter on a touch screen. So mechanical errors can happen.

neither be too soft nor be too tough

mā tīkṣṇo māmṛdurbhūḥ tvaṁ tīkṣṇo bhava mṛdurbhava||

A very relevant advice from the elderly Statesman Bhishma pitaamaha to king Yudhishthira, during discussion of Raja dharma.. as described in the Shantiparva of the epic Mahabharatham
The grandsire's advice to his grandson and the king is:-
Do not act too soft with people. You will get insults
Do not act too tough with people. They will just keep distance from you.
Be neither too tough nor too soft.
Be tough when situation demands and be soft when that approach is expedient.
Striking the balance, striking the golden mean, is the real art of life.
Man is after all a bundle of conflicting emotions and a storehouse of conflicting behavioural patterns.
Moreover, life is so complex that two situations are never alike.
Real severity or at least show of severity alone can enable you to manage and save certain situations.
However, some situations would call for a lot of soft handling.
Toughness or softness are neither good nor bad in all contexts.
However, the choice of situations to display such attitudes is the vital issue.
When we do that in the right places, we become heroes.
When we do that in the wrong places we become clowns.

religion,sptrituality and businee

If spirituality comes naturally it is welcome at any stage.. However, with some people, it is an exhibition, with some clever people, it is a source of income, and half-baked inputs often misled the youthful people. In addition, the difficulty with most young persons is that once some they acquire some knowledge, the sense of self-importance swells in geometrical proportions. I am sure we can learn certain things only through mature thinking. There is absolutely no substitute for that. I am not at all referring to the business that some camouflage as religion. There can be many balayogis kumars, Shukabrahmam, and what not. If it is a lucrative business, there is some meaning in it. I can consider it as a means of livelihood. However, it is not service of God, or society or pursuit of spirituality. We see too many professional preachers, professional swamis, saints and savants. If lifestyle management by means of pep talk has grown into a big business, why not religion...?

when you provide the environs for growth you will see the good results eventually

Nice thoughts are like flowers that bloom in a creeper. One has to water the plant, nurture it lovingly, expose the plant to sunlight, drive away the pests and devote a lot of time and care. Still, the flowers bloom on their own terms. Neither the plant nor the one who nurtures the plant can demand of anyone or even expect that the flowers would bloom on a particular day or moment. Anyway, one can be sure about the fact that when you provide the environs for growth you will see the good results eventually. This logic applies to sublime thoughts too.

Even biased view with some logic to back them up are worth positive treatment.

At present, there is no scarcity for resources and reading materials.

However, people should have the basic educational and intellectual background to enable themselves to study the material, to read and understand the commentaries in various languages, evaluating conflicting interpretations .Then they would come to a reasonably balanced evaluation.

At least the person who considers the issue should be capable of locating and studying all or a majority of the materials espousing various schools of thought on the subject, and understanding the logic applied by various votaries in support of their divergent views..

After this study in some depth, either the student or reader may accept one from out of the variety of views, or alternately he can apply his own mind and could arrive at his own independent conclusion.

Even biased view with some logic to back them up are worth positive treatment.

However, nowadays we tend to quote some book or author, and even without reading or understanding the content, we just give out our own opinion and ascribe or attribute that view to the author whose name we happened to see, or a link that we happened to come across. In addition, the reader and the audience too just lap up such views without caring to do any crosscheck.

This is the in thing in this era of information explosion through new media outlets.

The importance of gold in Hindu and Indian lore is beyond normal imagination

The importance of gold in Hindu and Indian lore is beyond normal imagination.
Hiranyaretas the one who is having gold (molten) as semen is an epithet attributed to Lord Shiva, Agni, Sun and Adityas.

Hiranyaretas is a word used in the celebrated Adityahridayam of Ramayanam.
The Goddess of wealth Lakshmi is Hiranyavarana, Hiranmayee
When the parents give a girl in marriage, the Vedas prescribe that they must decorate her with as much gold ornaments as possible.
The Kanyakaadaanam mantram is-

"Respected Groom, you are Lord Vishnu Himself. I am giving you as a solemn gift the nubile girl who is very rich in Gold, whom we have decked with huge quantity of Gold ornaments. I am making this gift because I am desirous of attaining brahmaloka. May all the gods and the Supreme Being who occupies and holds this universe in place be witnesses to this gift. I am presenting this female child to this groom so that the departed souls of my family may attain eternal deliverance."

Every gift or Dakshina of offering made to God or other exalted persons whom we revere as God, was in gold or content of gold that formed part of that coin or material.

हिरण्यगर्भ गर्भस्तं हेमबीजम् विभावसोः अनन्तपुण्य फलदं . Here again the gold is treated as the semen of Vibhaavas or Fire.
I was just mentioning this because the emotional attachment of an Indian to Gold is not just materialistic.

Fīat jūstitia ruat cælum

Spirituality is a combination sraddhaa, nishtaa, bhkthi, dharma aachaara .. all these involve absolute discipline.. Deviations from the path already shown by elders are not possible unless under exceptional circumstances. And like the judicial dictum..( Fīat jūstitia ruat cælum ) may justice be done even if the heavens fall. ..we have to follow rules without exception even under the worst circumstances.Physical pleasure and comforts are not a priority consideration at all.

Kula acharam

Primarily our spirituality is based on shruti or vedas.. and the smritis and soothras based on that.
Kula acharam evolves based on these.
If some acharam which are not according to shruti and smrithi and sootras creep in they should be stopped immediately when such aberrations are noticed.
Such aberrations can easily happen nowadays because many of us and our parents too are not sure about the rules.

And a vadhyar or a guru of a region different from ours originally may not understand our exact background.
Those who re settle in metroplis or north or foreign countries face such issues.

And sadly there is a tendency to flout acharams and introduce new practices contrary to shrutis and smrithis even in ancient agraharams like ours.

That is suicidal

so Inspiring and so simple..
Just read it somewhere,
I do not know anything of Bangla.. language.. but I could see the striking resemblance to Sanskrit..
यथा or यदा चित्तो भयशून्यः
I tend to fall in love with Bangla. may be too late in life..

we make a lot of fuss about rituals and practices rather than appreciating the core spirit

Often we make a lot of fuss about rituals and practices rather than appreciating the core spirit behind the rituals and observations..
Often, more than the staple part of the ritual which reflects the spirit of the matter, the peripheral preparatory or incidental practices are observed more faithfully and in the long run, often the core issue is even relegated to oblivion.

Wearing a particular dress or wearing dress in a particular manner or having a shave or tonsure or using some toilet material for bath.. all these are peripheral..
However in connection with certain rituals we restrict and regulate such routine practices.. That is okay.
But in the long run, the rituals hold the sway.. and even mild deviation from some silly practices are termed as sinful.

Surely, this is not the idea.. this is not the spirit of the rituals.
Many rituals have procedural niceties which are just optional. In fact the basic laws like Vedas do not say anything about such practices
But some commentators of later period are very meticulous and fussy about some such things.
Many web shastrigals too
Some conventions assume the shape of staple practices and later on people worry more about procedures rather than substance.
For example if one fails to do sraddham or tarpanam on the prescribed day he is clearly a grave sinner.

But no one can really bracket a shave or haircut before the ritual as an equally serious sin or misconduct.
However the danger lurking on the other side is that if we try to allow some leeway in the procedural aspects we may get bolder and encroach upon areas where compromise is not permitted.

If a person is clear in mind about the dividing line and if he will not be haunted by regrets later then he can relax procedural aspects.
But we need not defy old practices which are harmless..
Maturity in approach holds the key

our existence is not restricted to the period between the birth and death

I do firmly believe the idea found reiterated in Hinduism that our existence is not restricted to the period between the birth and death. even without any direct proof...
Rather, like the blessed lord said in Bagavad Gita, this life material just changes bodies like worn out garments and appears again in new clothes..
The varied stages of growth and maturity in mind and physique we discover among us cannot be explained in any other way..

the noble ideas of Vedas and Bible and Q'ran are all the same in substance

I am , have no doubt about it, a 150 percent Hindu brahmin following all the vedic traditions all my life and sure I would die that way only.
But the basic Sanatan Dharma never expects us to classify God or Truth or Moral as Sanatan God or moral or as different from truth or such things defined by other religions. Honestly the noble ideas of Vedas and Bible and Q'ran are all the same in substance. Sanatana Dharma will not ever condemn any noble thing in any religion. I am sure a true Hindu will find nothing basically wrong in Bible or q'ran.
Many things that are being done misquoting the Bible or the Holy Kitab are not the defects of those sacred scripture.
And if someone feels that such books or their interpretations contain wrong things somewhere those parts can be rejected without hesitation. But still what is wrong in respecting the noble ideas ?
Just because I respect Bible I will not give up my faith and my own religion

it is better to read the original agama texts.

Instead of trying to share links by some persons who have partially read and formed their own views it is better to read the original agama texts.

They include Vikhanasa books, the commentaries of Vedas by the likes of Sayana and Bhattabhaskara, commentaries on Purana by the likes of Sridhara and on Upanishads and Vedanta by Desika Shankara and Madhva and so on, at least in the minimal way.

The tantric texts of the East Like Calcutta, of the North like Tibet and Kashmir have been unearthed and published with commentaries by many and the pioneer in this filed is Arthur Avlon.. Then the southern Shakta school is spearheaded by the greats like Bhaskararaya, and numerous tantrks of Kerala..

Peripheral links can only impress but serve little purpose for the real seeker.

The works of Kavyakanta Vasishta Ganapathy Muni, Kapali Sahstri etc too can be of great value in original study .

agamas do not permit mindless change of shape of the idol or the precincts of the house of God

Our temple traditions do not actually permit any sort of decorations or artificial or synthetic nature.

Moreover, agamas do not permit mindless change of shape of the idol or the precincts of the house of God.

The devotees and administrators can plan and execute the changes, if found necessary, only following the directions prescribed in the agamas or tantras and they have to make even these alterations can following strict through the strict procedures and guidelines under the supervision of learned Gurus and Vedic scholars. The process should start with seeking the permission of the deity through

Deva prashnam, followed by pariharams and prasyaschittams that such prashnam reveals and prescribes.

Even decorations with natural materials like flower or leaves or twigs should remain without change only for just a day at the most.

Even the most precious thing placed with the deity becomes obsolete within hours, and we should not reuse the same item for decoration or pooja. There are some exceptions like Tulasi and

Rudraksham, which we can use repeatedly.

Of course we do so many things opposed to agamas and rules..

We decorate the idol with external fittings that changes the appearance, sex, gender, and the bhava of the pratishta. In addition, we even advertise about it, publish snaps about the metamorphosed shape of the God...

Where is the permission for all this?

When we are talking about traditions we have to think of all such aspects..

Next question is about continuing namasankeerthanam without sandyavandanam, using non-agamic, non-Vedic non-tantric means and hymns for worship of traditionally consecrated Moorthies and vigrahas. Are these practices right?

Using garlands of lemon, Vada, Vettrila etc for decorating the Moorthies either Utsavam or Moolam--.which Veda or Agama or Karika has permitted us to do all these ?

The Gurukkal, Shivacharya, Azhvar, Bhattacharya, or Archaga Swami may permit it because he has no choice but to agree with the motley crowd. Alternately because he is ignorant.

Another gem from Sanskrit
================
One should never attempt to destroy or apply something in large quantity or of huge value for getting some small or cheap thing in return.
The test of one’s bountiful intelligence and efficiency lies in his capacity to procure, maintain and preserve a huge quantum of resources by applying as little as possible of what he is already in possession.
====================
Looks a very straightforward and even trifling statement deserving hardly any elucidation.
However, in real life, hype, advertisement, comparison, jealousy et al., mislead us and we pay through our noses.
Not only our resources, we often apply or spend our emotions like anger, generosity, love and so on too in huge excess of what is required optimally.
(Of course, we need not consider spending things to help others in this category because the return we get by way of happiness and goodwill such expenditure generates always is in excess of what we spend.)
Moreover, not to say the least, we spend our thoughts and words too in disproportionate way due to lack of diligence.
We can think and save.
Anything saved is anything earned too.
