Read a hilarious post of Umbrella and Stick, Koda and Vadi I remembered Koda
and Vadi through a joke. Of course the joke is not very fragrant.
The joke on Koda and Vadi, Umbrella
and stick, credited to a Nambuthiri.
The Nambuthiris invariably carried an umbrella and stick wherever they
went.
Moreover, they used their time and
feet to travel a lot. Covering untrodden terrains all over the length and
breadth of Kerala
Besides, in good old days, the
entire landscape was a big latrine for people to do justice to their calls of
nature in the morning.
The nearby pond was used to wash the exhaust ports and then to have the
bath too.
One day, an elderly Nambuthiri with a Koda and Vadi, umbrella and stick was
engaged in such a washing process and an irritated person was watching and
could not help murmuring.
"Kodayum vadiyum kondu oronnu
vannolum.. കൊടയും വടിയും കൊണ്ട് ഓരോന്ന് വന്നോളും --some dandy will come with an umbrella and a
stick..".
The Nambuthiri was listening to the murmur...
Coolly he wiped the drops of water
in sticking to his buttocks , , droplets
sticking there after the wash, and just
sprinkled the water on the face of the gentleman who was in a murmuring mood,
and said.. Inno pidicho vadiyum kodayum..
ഇന്നോ പിടിച്ചോ വടിയും കൊടയും
Vadi. In Malayalam means wiping and Koda means shaking and sprinkling. Therefore,
the buttock got a wipe off with water and the holy waters splashed on the face
of the onlooker.
An instance where words became prophetic.
