The mutual talk between people in our naadu-gramam-our little place.-the small talk like just "enna oye," " saukhiyama mami "or "sukham thanney alley?" or just a nod of head, means a lot- really a lot.
Such gestures convey millions of unspoken words there.
The words we utter are of relatively little significance.
We know the basic nature and habits of each person we meet in the morning.
In addition, for the neighbours and friends, there is hardly any difference between own family and the people we meet in the street, near the pond or at the village temple.
If the usual pleasantries uttered or even a nod of head by a person shows something unusual even slightly, the other person would feel as if an alarm is ringing.
He will not only think to himself, "What is amiss with this brahmanan” or “this Nair” but he would exchange notes with others of the village he meets next. In addition, everyone would discuss anything good or bad and diagnose solutions in a few moments, and on many occasions, a solution for the issue would have been found and put into action even before the affected person would have realized about it.
That is the sweetness of the village life- the village life I have lived and seen in Palakkad at least- and my experience is more than six decades young.
