never undertake austerities or penanace beyond your capacity

आगतेरधिकं त्यागं यः कुर्यात् तत्सुतादयः।

दुःस्थिताः स्युः ऋणग्रस्ताः सोऽपि देशान्तरं व्रजेत्॥

शुक्रनीति

āgateradhikaṁ tyāgaṁ yaḥ kuryāt tatsutādayaḥ|

duḥsthitāḥ syuḥ ṛṇagrastāḥ so'pi deśāntaraṁ vrajet||

śukranīti

अशक्त्या यः शरीरस्य व्रतं नियममेव वा।

करोत्यार्तो भवेत्पश्चात् पश्चात्तापात् फलच्युतिः॥

चारायण

aśaktyā yaḥ śarīrasya vrataṁ niyamameva vā|

karotyārto bhavetpaścāt paścāttāpāt phalacyutiḥ||

If a person tries to give by way of help or assistance, if he tries to provide for others far in excess of what he has or what he has already received, then his sons and other kinsmen would find themselves in indebtedness and in miserable condition. If a person undergoes vows and conducts rituals which are far beyond his capacity and physical enduriance, the consequence would be that he would become miserable later and would ever be repenting his action and also would be complaining about the lack of results. Charayana.. a Jaina scripture.

ആഗതേരധികം ത്യാഗം യഃ കുര്യാത് തത്സുതാദയഃ।

ചാരായണ

ഒരു വ്യക്തി തന്‍റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലും ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലും ഉള്ളവയോ, തനിക്ക് ലഭിക്കും എന്ന് ഉറപ്പുള്ളവയോ ആയതില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ കാര്യങ്ങളോ വസ്തുക്കളോ ത്യാഗം ചെയ്ത് മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് സഹായം ചെയ്യുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ അയാളുടെ മക്കളും ബന്ധുക്കളും വിട്ടുമാറാത്ത ദുരിതത്തിലും കടക്കെണിയിലും പെട്ട് വലയും അയാള്‍ സ്വന്തം നാട് വിട്ട് ആരും തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ പറ്റാത്ത വിധം വേറെ ഏതെങ്കിലും സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് ഒടിയോളിക്കേണ്ട ദുരവസ്ഥയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേരും. ഒരാള്‍ തന്‍റെ ശാരീരികമായ് കഴിവിന്‍റെയും സഹാനശക്തിയുടെയും അതിര്‍വരമ്പുകള്‍ ലംഘിച്ച് കൂടുതല്‍ മിനക്കെട്ട് വ്രതങ്ങളും ആചാരങ്ങളും തപസ്സും ഒക്കെ അനുഷ്ടിക്കുകയാണ് എങ്കില്‍ അയാള്‍ ഏറെ വേദന അനുഭവിച്ച് അവശനാകും. അത്തരം പാഴ് ശ്രമത്തിന്‍റെ ഫലം പശ്ചാത്താപം മാത്രം ആയിരിക്കും. താന്‍ ഏറെ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനു ഒരു ഫലവും ഉണ്ടായില്ല എന്ന കാര്യം ഓര്‍ത്ത് അയാള്‍ എന്നും വിലപിച്ച് കൊണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ടി വരികയും ചെയ്യും
