You would not be able to pinpoint the spirit inside the body by touch. So you are touching the housing unit and decorating it with dress, cosmetics and so on. It is just like offering pranams at the gate of the temple if you cannot go in. The atma, jeevatma, paramatma etc in Vedanta may not be exactly this atma which you loosely call as I or self. The foundations for philosophy vary and definitions and iterpretations toommay vary. We cannot compare an object from different frames of reference and reach identical preception. People try to do that generaization, indulge in mistimed quotes,so that they appear as great intellectuals but such arguments will never carry us anywhere. Pooja is a simple process.. Er nrrd not equate it with penance or meditation, although the basic object for all these is to get nearer and nearer to the Divine.
