If we try to find out each source of attack and try to destroy them one by one, our fight will never end.

भूमिं छादयितुं सर्वां कुतश्चर्म भविष्यति।

उपानच्चर्ममात्रेण छन्ना भवति मेदिनी॥

बोधिचर्यावतारे ५-१३

bhūmiṁ chādayituṁ sarvāṁ kutaścarma bhaviṣyati|

upānaccarmamātreṇa channā bhavati medinī||

bodhicaryāvatāre 5-13

A very sensible advise found in the Buddhist text Bodhicharyaavataara.

We cannot find or create enough covering material that could form a protective shroud over the entire earth, so that the earth is suitable and pleasant for our movement.. However we can easily find a piece of leather to make a shoe that would cover our feet-and that would provide protection for us from the earth at our level..

If the sky is opening up and pouring in huge quantities, we cannot go out and try to seal holes in the sky.. But if we hold a good umbrella over our heads, the rains can hardly make us wet.

And in day to day life we face so many attacks from all around--in words and action-- If we try to find out each source of attack and try to destroy them one by one, our fight will never end.. But if we equip ourselves mentally and physically to defend ourselves in our own way, we would survive, most of the time.

Often we fail to understand this simple fact. And in our ignorance we fight against heavy odds and fail too.
