अनुष्ठितं तु यद्देवैर्मुनिभिर्यदनुष्ठितम्।
नानुष्ठेयं मनुष्यैतदुक्तं कर्म समाचरेत्॥
यज्ञवल्क्य:॥
anuṣṭhitaṁ tu yaddevairmunibhiryadanuṣṭhitam|
nānuṣṭheyaṁ manuṣyaitaduktaṁ karma samācaret||
yajñavalkyḥ||
A very important instruction from the celebrated Indian lawmaker and jurist Yajnavalkya.
People should not try to do all that the gods or the sages did themselves.
The men should just do things that the sages and gods have directed and prescribed for men.
We know Gods and sages had mystic and supernatural powers and the power of penance, often the gift or immortality and so on.
They would have done so many things, some so unnatural and odd too.
They could get away with such actions and survive too because of their special gifts and endowments.
If men with limited capacity and dexterity tried to do all these things, they are sure to meet with great problems.
However, the sages and the gods, while giving advice to men on the lifestyle that the ordinary men should follow, were clearly aware of what the men could do and have given instructions accordingly.
It is better to follow the advices of the gods and rishis rather than copying what they did.
