never give opinions freely and unsolicied

nāpṛṣṭaḥ kasyacidbrūyānna cānnyāyena pṛcchataḥ|
jānannapi hi medhāvī jaḍavalloka ācaret||
|ṁanusmṛtyām dvitīye adhyāye||

A wise and resourceful person should not give out his views and opinions in any matter unless an avid seeker requests for it.
In addition, even someone asks him for his views; he should express such views only if people raise the questions properly and justly and in the right context. This would mean that one should not express opinions for the consumption of people who are disrespectful, who are cynics or hecklers, who are asking for opinion just to laugh at the opinion and the speaker himself and insult him too..
A learned person should not express his opinion on an issue even if he has the knowledge and resources to do so, if the opinion is not going to serve its purpose.
The best way with neutral and disrespectful audience is for the learned persons to act as if he is not aware of anything and that he is naïve, and it is better that maintain stoic silence too..
This view is from Manusmriti. Chapter 2
I did not know about it. I was just wring on the subject the other day that only idiots and empty drums will give opinions in social media unasked.
Later on when I read some text, I discovered the above dictum from Manusmriti itself.
