Worship of God perhaps is just a formality for a jnaani

Worship of God perhaps is just a formality. A temple or stotras or a Vedic hymn is just symbolic. Shankara would even say the whole jagat is illusion.

However, that comes only to a perfect jnaani. We can rarely find such a jnaani. Gita talks of the insignificant status of a tiny puddle of water when the whole place is flooded. Then that stage of realization comes only to the most evolved souls. We are all too far away from that state.

Even saying a good morning to a colleague or a boss is an empty action. However, no one normally skips that.

Eating and sleeping alone can satisfy the completely ignorant and contemplating on the Brahmam alone can engage a jeevanmuktha completely. However, we are all somewhere in the middle of the spectrum

I am not trying to argue. I just wanted to submit we are living in a far from perfect state of physical and mental existence. Our views and ideas can vary with individuals and again the ideas can vary even in the case of the same individual along with time. God is perfect but the mind that perceives Him cannot reach perfection. That perhaps is the cause of all heterodoxy.
