It happens in every society.
In its infancy and perhaps even in its adolescence and youth, the society is frank.
As it grows in age, it starts wearing masks of false pretences, prejudices, intolerance and so on.
First, it starts to tell lies knowing fully that it is doing something improper.
Then it starts believing in its own lies, and the guilty conscience vanishes.
Next stage is when it starts believing that lies are true and facts are lies.
This is the sign that the rot has set in.
Decline and deterioration are inevitable.
Maybe like the Phoenix bird raising again from its own ashes, the society reconstructs itself.
It is born again, goes through the above cycle again, dies and is reborn one more.
The cycle repeats.
