keen only in memorizing the text and statements contained in books

यो हि वेदे च शास्त्रे च ग्रन्थधारणतत्परः।

न च ग्रन्थार्थ तत्त्वज्ञः तस्य तद्धारणं वृथा॥

भारं स वहते तस्य ग्रन्थस्यार्थं न वेत्थि यः।

यस्तु ग्रन्थार्थतत्त्वज्ञो नास्य ग्रन्थागमो वृथा॥

इन्दिश्चे स्प्रूचे ४९१८४९१९ महाभारते शान्तिपर्वे

yo hi vede ca śāstre ca granthadhāraṇatatparaḥ|

na ca granthārtha tattvajñaḥ tasya taddhāraṇaṁ vṛthā||

bhāraṁ sa vahate tasya granthasyārthaṁ na vetthi yaḥ|

yastu granthārthatattvajño nāsya granthāgamo vṛthā||

If a person is keen only in memorizing the text and statements contained in books carrying scriptures and sciences but not interested, and perhaps does not have the capacity to study and internalize the facts and knowledge contained in the books, for him the prolonged labour of memorization is sheer waste of time and energy.

A fellow who carries with him huge volumes in science and scriptures but had no clue about the contents of such books carrying science and scriptures, then he is just wasting his energy carrying the burden or dead weight of such books. Moreover, it is just an action in futility.

However, if a person has accumulated or come by huge volumes of books on sciences and scriptures and also has spent time and energy to learn the contents of the books, for that blessed person the possession of books is simply a blessing, and not at all a waste

यःa person वेदे in scriptures शास्त्रे scientific texts च also ग्रन्थ धारण तत्परः to memorise the contents हि alone भवति is परन्तु but ग्रन्थार्थ तत्परः intersected in internalizing the meaning of the contents of the text or scriptures न वर्तते is not तस्य for him तद such धारणं memorization वृथा भवति is sheer waste

यः who ग्रन्थस्य of the books containing scriptures and sciences अर्थं meaning न वेत्थि does not understand सः he तस्य of that book भारं वहते carries the huge burden (in futility) यः who तु is indeed ग्रन्थार्थ तत्वज्ञः has grasped the meaning and sense of the sciences and scriptures contained in the books अस्य such ग्रन्थागमो possession and learning of the book न एव वृथा is not indeed a waste
