नार्थिकोऽर्थिनमभ्येति कृतार्थेनास्ति सङ्गतम्।

तस्मात्सर्वाणि साध्यानि सावशेषाणि कारयेत्॥

इन्दिश्चे स्प्रूचे ३६४८ महाभारते

nārthiko'rthinamabhyeti kṛtārthenāsti saṅgatam|

tasmātsarvāṇi sādhyāni sāvaśeṣāṇi kārayate||

indiśce sprūce 3648 mahābhārate

A very practical and matter of fact advice from Mahabharatham. Advice given by Sage Kanika to Dhritarashtra

If a person wants to get something done, if he is expecting some favours, he would approach only a person who is having the capacity to help and surely, he will not approach a fellow who is already deficient and is eager to seek favours from others.

Moreover, a fellow, who approached someone for some favours and had his affairs settled or wants fulfilled, it is not likely that he would go back to the benefactor again just to meet him (and perhaps thank him too)

Therefore, the advice is that even when you are capable of doing favours, you are capable of helping others, and if you want the connection with the beneficiary continuing, then do favours only in parts, ever living something undone, incomplete.

अर्थिकः one who is in want of help, one who seeks help अर्थिनं one who is deficient, one who is wanting, one who is in need of help himself न अभ्येति will not approach कृतार्थे once the need is fulfilled न सङ्गतं no meeting अस्ति will be there तस्मात् therefore सर्वाणि all possible साध्यानि things that could be provided, that could be supplied to one in need सावशेषाणि after leaving something still to be done कारयेत् left for further doing
