The most sensible approach regarding rituals like avaniavittam seems to be to follow the Acharya.. the acharya here is the Purohita we have taken for the family or gramam as Vadyar..
The dharmasastras prescribe only the traditional priest, or the one who presides over our initiations into Samskaras as the guides for our rituals..
If Acharyas of higher levels.. are to be brought into the picture, it is for the the Vadhyar etc..
We have to just follow what our normal purohita says..
Often every web pandit today dons the mantle of an authority and tells so many things..
And often many drag revered Spiritual gurus into the fray..
It is all nice to read and debate.
. But we have just to obey what our own priest says.
And the Shastras provide that we are absolved of any shortcomings or sins if such things happen because of the guidance or mis guidance of the purohita..
Each has a place .. no one else, higher or lower in hierarchy can take over and exercise veto..
Even in law and administration what action a sub magistrate or a station house officer can take cannot be normally taken by the Supreme court Judge or DGP..
