सुहृदां हि धनं भुक्त्वा कृत्वा प्रणयमीप्सितम्।
प्रतिकर्तुमशक्तस्य जीवितान्मरणं वरम्।
महाभारते उद्योगपर्वे १०७-०७
suhṛdāṁ hi dhanaṁ bhuktvā kṛtvā praṇayamīpsitam|
pratikartumaśaktasya jīvitānmaraṇaṁ varam|
mahābhārate udyogaparve 107-07
After enjoying all the desired hospitalities and favours and affection of friends, and enjoying and sharing their affluence on that basis of such affection, if a person is in a situation where he is not able to return or repay anything to such friends, then death is better for him than his existence
ईप्सितं all that is desired प्रणयं कृत्वा showing and receiving all love and affection सुहृदां of friends धनं money resources भुक्त्वा enjoying, partaking प्रतिकर्तुं giving in return अशक्तस्य not capable of जीवितात् from life, living existence मरणं death वरं हि indeed is better
സുഹൃദാം ഹി ധനം ഭുക്ത്വാ കൃത്വാ പ്രണയമീപ്സിതം।
പ്രതികര്തുമശക്തസ്യ ജീവിതാന്മരണം വരം।
മഹാഭാരതേ ഉദ്യോഗപര്വേ ൧൦൭-൦൭
സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെയും കരുതലിന്റെയും തണലില് ജീവിച്ചു അവരുടെ ഔദാര്യം കൈപ്പറ്റി സ്വന്തം കാര്യം എല്ലാം സാധിച്ച് എടുത്ത് അവരുടെ ധനവും സമൃദ്ധിയും ധാരാളമായി പങ്കിട്ട് ജീവിച്ച ശേഷം അത്തരം സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്ക്ക് ഒന്നും തിരിച്ചു ചെയ്യുവാന് കഴിയാത്ത അവസ്ഥയില് എത്തിപ്പെടുന്നതിനേക്കാള് മരിച്ചു പോവുന്നതാണ് ഭേദം.
