expediency





कारणान्मित्रतां याति कारणादेति शत्रुताम्।
तस्मान्मित्रत्वमेकत्र योज्यं वैरं च धीमता॥
इन्दिश्चे स्प्रुचे ६४४ पञ्चतन्त्रे

kāraṇānmitratāṁ yāti kāraṇādeti śatrutām|
tasmānmitratvamekatra yojyaṁ vairam ca dhīmatā||
indiśce spruce 644 pañcatantre

Neither friendship, nor enmity would be permanent as a rule. Friendship between persons or groups develop when they have common causes, common agenda and common benefits arising. Enmity among persons and group of persons or classes of person develop when there is conflict of ideas, conflict of interests etc. Neither unity nor commonality of interests, nor conflict of interests would last forever. Therefore, a wise person should include people in his list or friends according to the expediency, situations obtaining in the present. He should gauge enmity too by the same yardstick

नरःman कारणात् for reasons मित्रतां याति attains friendship कारणात् for some reasons शत्रुतां एति develop enmity च too तस्मात् therefore धीमता by the wise person एकत्र according to the circumstances मित्रत्वं friendship वैरं enmity च too योज्यं should be observed..
