the company of evil people does not affect the pure and generous nature of the noble ones

सत्सङ्गाद् भवति हि साधुता खलानां

साधूनां न हि खलसङ्गमात् खलत्वम्।

आमोदं कुसुमभवं मृदेव धत्ते

मृद्गन्धं न हि कुसुमानि धारयन्ति॥

चाणक्यनीति १२-७

satsaṅgād bhavati hi sādhutā khalānām

sādhūnāṁ na hi khalasaṅgamāt khalatvam|

āmodaṁ kusumabhavaṁ mṛdeva dhatte

mṛdgandhaṁ na hi kusumāni dhārayanti||

cāṇakyanīti 12-7

A great lesson from the great Guru Chanakya

Even very bad people become good ( or possibly become good) when they happen to be in the company of the good and the noble.

But being in the company of evil people does not affect the pure and generous nature of the noble ones.

When a bunch of fragrant flowers fall on the mud on earth, the mud too catches up the fragrance from the flowers

But the flowers would not get contaminated by the smell of the mud..

It is a great truth. The tendency of the average person is to get affected by the surroundings. and usually the surroundings are far from ideal.

And good people too exist, in spite of not so good people existing around in plenty.

The proof of it is that a Buddha Rama or Jesus existed and influenced a lot of people around, but they were never affected by the challenges of overwhelmingly evil people around

സത്സങ്ഗാദ് ഭവതി ഹി സാധുതാ ഖലാനാം

സാധൂനാം ന ഹി ഖലസങ്ഗമാത് ഖലത്വം।

ആമോദം കുസുമഭവം മൃദേവ ധത്തേ

മൃദ്ഗന്ധം ന ഹി കുസുമാനി ധാരയന്തി॥

ചാണക്യനീതി ൧൨-൭

ആചാര്യവര്യനായ ചാണക്യനില്‍ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കുന്ന ഒരു മഹത്തായ പാഠം.

കൊടും ദുഷ്ടന്മാര്‍ പോലും സ്വഭാവത്തിലും ചര്യയിലും ഔന്നത്യം കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന സജ്ജനങ്ങലുമായുള്ള സംസര്‍ഗ്ഗം മൂലം ഒത്തിരി നല്ലവരായി മാറുന്നു. അങ്ങിനെ മാറാന്‍ ഏറെ സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.

പക്ഷെ ചീത്ത വ്യക്തികളുടെ കൂടെയുള്ള സഹവാസം സജ്ജനങ്ങളുടെ സ്വഭാവശുദ്ധിയിലും ഹൃദയ വിശാലതയിലും ഒരു കോട്ടവും വരുത്തുകയില്ല

നറുമണം പരത്തുന്ന ഒരു പൂങ്കുല ചെളിയില്‍ വീണുപോയാല്‍ പൂക്കളുടെ സുഗന്ധവും ചെളിക്ക് പകര്‍ന്നു കിട്ടും

പക്ഷെ ചെളിയുടെ രൂക്ഷഗന്ധം പൂക്കളുടെ വാസനയെ ബാധിക്കുകയില്ല.

ഇതൊരു വലിയ സത്യമാണ്. ശരാശരി മനുഷ്യന്‍ സാധാരണയായി ചുറ്റും കാണുന്നതും സംഭവിക്കുന്നതും ആയ കാര്യങ്ങല്‍ക്കനുസരിച്ചാണ് പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ചുറ്റും നടക്കുന്ന നല്ലതും ചീത്തയും അതേപടി ശരാശരി മനുഷ്യനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നു. സാധാരണ ഗതിയില്‍ ചുറ്റും നടക്കുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാം അത്ര നല്ലവയൊന്നും അല്ല എന്നതും ഇവിടെ ഓര്‍ക്കണം.

പക്ഷെ ചുറ്റും എന്തൊക്കെ ചീത്ത കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ സംഭവിച്ചാലും അതൊന്നും സ്വന്തം പരിശുദ്ധിക്ക് ഹാനി വരുത്താന്‍ അനുവദിക്കാത്ത ഒരു കോട്ടം സജ്ജനങ്ങളും ഈ ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഉണ്ട്.. അവരുടെ എണ്ണം വളരെ കുറവായിരിക്കാം.

ഇതിനു തെളിവാണ് ഒരു ബുദ്ധനും രാമനും യേശുവും എല്ലാം ഇവിടെ അവതരിച്ചു.. നമുക്കെല്ലാം നന്മയുടെ പാഠങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കി. പക്ഷെ അവര്‍ ചുറ്റും നടന്ന നശീകരണപ്രവണതകളാല്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ബാധിക്കപ്പെട്ടില്ല.
