If a weak or powerless, defenceless innocent person is struck or beaten and faces death by torture (at the hands of power centres or unruly ruffians) and no one in the area comes forward to protect him, to raise any voice for him, it may be noted that a terrible punishment as delivered by fate, terrible retribution from divinity is in store for all concerned. Such indifference and hearlessness would not be tolerated by fate and divinity.
This is what people believed in the times of Mahabharatam.
