Kalidasa in Kumarasambhavam endorses this, when Siva in the Guise of a Brahmachari tells Uma..
यतः सतां संनतगात्री संगतं मनीषिभिः साप्तपदीनं उच्यते..
yatah sataam sannatagaatri sangatham maneeshibhiH saaptapadeenam uchyate..
Meaning.. Oh damsel of very slim and well shaped body,
it is said by the wise people that the friendship between nice people is established by conversation of even just seven words.."(saaptapadeenam can mean seven steps by foot too, that is walking together just seven feet)
