to wear thripundraka bhasmam

if you have to wear thripundraka bhasmam (pasted holy ashes in three parallel and horizontal strands) in the evening, you have to take a bath.. or something equivalent to bath.(there are many substituted rituals equivaltent to bath.. but a strightforward bath in a riverside, pond on under a shower is the best). and for performing sayam sandhya full bhasmadharanam( wearing of holy ashes ritualistically) is a must for smarthas..

(Of course I have read some texts where it is prescribed that ashes should not be soaked in water if they are worn in the evening..
But as a shistacharam, I have seen most bramins in Palakkad wearing holy ashes soaked in water too.. in the evening... provided they take bath..
Of course, there cannot be any hard and fast prescription for this in Vedas or major Smritis.. It comes rather by tradition)
Dont know what vaishnavism prescribes about sreechurnam and gopi.. that is their secret.. I am an out and out shaivite..
We have now forgotten performing maadhyahnikam..
If we are doing madhyahnikam, sastras prescribe a bath just before midday and then also vibhuthi has to be worn in detail
Sure, vibhuti pattai(or smear of holy ashes made into a semisolid paste) is to be worn all over the body, at least on selected sixteen on eighteen places on the body.. and not only on the forehead..
the vibhoothi lines should never be crossed with any other pottus (other tilaks or marks) or ornamentation like sandal paste, kumkumam etc..
The rules are elaborate and strict.. , this Pattai with viboothi is a very serious affair..
Acts of omission or disrespect of the holy ashes will enrage the killer of killer Lord Shiva and you can guess what can happen..
But the rules are even more strict for pure Shaivas.. like Sivacharyas, Gurukkal etc, who perform poojas in our Shiva temples..
Among Lingayattas, men and ladies too wear thripundrakam and also wear Shivalinga in their upper body..
Thripundrakam is not usually prescribed for our smartha ladies .. although some old paattis(grandmas) wear it that way as per local customs..
Especially elderly widows who have been initiated to Panchaksharam sometimes wear thripundra..
In fact they can wear only dry holy ash in a single line.
That practice of wearing elaborate marks with ashes mixed in water may be right for the old ladies according to the custom , but our smrithis do not prescribe it.. It is again a tradition.

We have even ceased to recognize that such Guruparampara is still there to guide us

Namasmaranam is not prescribed by Shruti or Smritis.. the maxim “Kalau Sankeetya Keshavam” is not derived from any Dharmasastra. I just want to underline one point. If we are not able to perform, it is a weak point for us. We can choose to denounce smritis. Or just perform rituals as much as possible and just leave it at without making any justifications. Some are even forced to leave their old parents at Old age homes, some are forced to keep the dead body of dear ones in morgue even a month. That is all helplessness. For helplessness, no justification or explanation is necessary. However, Namasmaranam will not substitute for Sandyavandanam, Pooja, or Sraddham. The helplessness is not a fault, but trying to find justification in treading a path not prescribed as an alternative will just not do.

If a Brahmin is saying that he is not going to perform Sandhya or Sraddham, no one is blaming him anyway. He is a brahma bandhu rather than a Brahmin.. That is all.

Amendments have been made to rituals by great people like Vaidyanatha Deekshita, with the consent of Gurus of the status or pontiffs of Kanchi and Sringeri. In fact the age-old Sraddham and Aparakriya procedures were impossible to follow. The Sapindeekaranam was to be conducted only on the first annual anniversary. And if the Kartha dies by that time, the departed soul had no way of reaching pitru hood. For Tamil Brahmins this provision was amended by our gurus. I think some other Brahmins actually face the problem even now. By consensus, even now our great gurus are there, great scholars and Vedic pandithas are there. Vidvat Sadas Can be convened and amendments can be effected.. without change to the basic principles contained in the shastras.. In fact the Supreme Court Decision in the case of Meenaakshi Temple Priests is such an attempt.. The Honourable Bench did it- the issue must have been decided by the Gurus for the Shivacharya, the Kanchi and Sringeri Mutt, and various Aadheenams in that State... This I state with utmost respect for the Apex Court. I am no one to challenge the Wisdom of the Hon’ble Court..

Of course our problems is that, instead of using the August offices of our Gurus for advice and guidance in the proper running of our religious and social lives, we just pay lip service to them.. We have even ceased to recognize that such Guruparampara is still there to guide us.

The "wise" men of this age many create shortcuts

when we are performing a ritual as prescribed in smritis and grihya sootras or any other codified set up we have to follow the procedure as expected. or envisaged in that text .
For example, they say the most important part of Sandyavandanam is giving Arkhyam. offering water three times to the Supreme being with chant of Gayatri..
So some would say just pouring water three times chanting Gayatri can substitute for the worship of Sandhya.. Is it right.?.
There are rules for seating, Aachamanam, Pranayamam, Invoking the Devata, Rishi , Chandas, chanting Vedic mantras, prokshanam, praashanam and so on..
Then upasthaanam, Gayatri japam, Deva Prarthana, also are prescribed.
The "wise" men of this age many create shortcuts..
Maybe the short cut might be okay if we are in a helpless condition and pouring of water is the only thing possible.. Usually we are not so..
Funnily, seeing all these rituals and complications people just give up worshiping Sandhya.. that is another thing..

The entire Hinduism hinges on the two-words ऋतम् and सत्यं

Question put to me
Do you really believe that sprinkling of water around food with chanting of mantra will make the food amritham? Is there any scientific proof? Then it would be the easiest way to attain immortality.

My Reply
Sir, I am sure that if a person with adequate penance and honesty can easily do that.
The entire Hinduism hinges on the two-words ऋतम् and सत्यं ।
That is a matter of faith.
However, for that matter, probity and honesty too are matters of conviction and faith. To take it or not is the individual’s choice. For me the happenings and activities beyond my faith are just make-believe matters -a drama enacted to eke out the livelihood.
However, the Divine presence and its absolute potency is real for me. That is my view and I have survived six and half decades with that conviction. In addition, that faith I believe will come with me when I depart. As a Brahmin, I sprinkle water on my food with that faith. I do that when I offer naivedyam to god too.
That is good enough for me.
Ultimately the wise and unwise all go to the same place

sprinkling some water around our food before we eat is not an empty ritual

We talk of tamasic food affecting us and draining off our spiritual potential. Ordinary seekers like us might face such depletion of strength.

However, take the case of sage Agastya who ate the demon Vataapi whom his brother Bilva or Bilvala cooked as curry gave the flesh a dish to the sage.

Bilva was expecting the brother to tear off the stomach of the sage Agastya and come back.

Nevertheless, vatapi just burnt to ashes in the agni in the jatara of the sage.

Moreover, the incident did not affect the sage in any way whatsoever.

You know we sprinkle the food we eat with water consecrated by Gayatri and then invoke the Lord Savita, Satyam, and riram in the forenoon, ritam, and Satyam in the evening and give a coat of amrutham to the food as we start eating.

Finally, we give coat of amrutham at the conclusion of consuming food.

In addition, we treat our body as the yajna fire and offer the food as aahuti or oblation to prana, Apana, vyana, udhana, samaana.-the five pranas- and Brahma himself.

Moreover, we treat the food we eat as partaken by the Supreme Being himself and thus granting immortality to us.

This our human body is the seat of God himself.

If we realize that then no soiled or putrid food can ever contaminate us.

Just sprinkling some water around our food before we eat is not an empty ritual

performance of riituals throught proxy

Some person had remarked in one Iyer group that if a person is unable to perform due to illness, he could get the rituals performed by proxy through Brahmins. A “wise” person had interjected sarcastically that he was not sure whether Shastras authorised or permitted such action by proxy.
Someone had t post was tagged to me too. However, I am not interested in joining discussions in that group at any time.
However, I found answer to this query, with an authoritative extract from Smriti Mukthaaphalam of Vaidyanatha Deekshita, where the matter is set at rest by quoting Sage Parashara. (Parashara is one the most revered rishis and lawmakers of Sanatana Dharma. His grandfather is Sage Vasishta, His father sage Shakti, His son Vyasa the Krishna Dvaipayana and his grandson Sage Shukabrahmam.
I am giving below the excerpt with my own free translation.
I think Smritis permit the power of attorney action.

āpatkāle vrataṁ svayaṁ kartuṁ yadaśaktaḥ cet tadā brāhmaṇaiḥ kārayedityāha|parāśaraḥ|| vyādhivyasanini śrānte durbhikṣe ḍāmare tathā|| upavāso vrato homo dvijaiḥ sampāditānivā

Parashara says . “If in times of grave danger if one person is not able to perform the ritual himself, then it should be done through Brahmans. The aapad kaalaas, diseases, depression and sorrow due to bad habits, actions etc (Vyasana), due to tiredness making one immobile, when there is famine, when there is warlike condition with attacks from enemies all around--In such situations, fasting, vows, fire oblations and such activities can be done through the twice born or dwija.”

one of the problems faced by many Iyer families is that they have abandoned Shiva pooja

Panchayanthana pooja in the Smartha way which we Palakkad Iyers follow or comparable Poojas if Shrivaishnavas or Shivacharya are to be performed in a certain manner.

Normally Kalasha shankha atma peeta Poojas avahanam prana pratishta Arghyam achamanam abhishekam gandham pushpam dhoopam Deepam naivedyam neerajanam Arghyam pradakshinam Namaskarams these thing cannot be avoided.

And if Prana pratishta is done naivedyam of cooked dhanyam or rice or Payasam too is a, must.

In addition, all these have procedures and mantras.

Minimum 40 minutes if we use only purushasooktham for abhishekam.

Another 30 minutes or so more if we do rudrabhishekam with laghunyasam at least.

Then archana Stotram etc if tried would also consume a lot of time.

I do pooja daily at home

It takes minimum 90 minutes.

Nowadays one of the problems faced by many Iyer families is that they have abandoned Shiva pooja or panchayatanam and often they kept unattended, idols Moorthies saligramam lingam etc or they throw them away-Often destination unknown.

In many cases, the people would be rich learned and all and the horoscopes too would be excellent.

However, challenges occur and when queried through prashnam we see either deva kopam or pitru kopam.

Then we do many pariharams but still do not care to do the routine pitru Karyam or pooja to our swamis at home.

This is a serious issue

ladies.are exempted from Saashtaanga namaskaram.

Something which I posted in a group.. Extracted here for records.
I do not know whether it is my business to comment at all.. But when an issue concerning the Palakkad Iyers and customs are discussed, and the discussion is obviously turning to conclusions which are not really ever meant for the community, I thought I would contribute my two cents of thought over the matter..
It is about the issue whether girls between puberty and marriage are permitted to offer anga namaskaram..
"Just one doubt..
All ladies of Palakkad Iyer origin do some sort of Namaskarams to elders during auspicious occasion like Thiriuvathira, Nolumbu, Vishu etc.. it is not seen prohibited or objected just because the lady is between puberty and marriage.
During the nishchayatarthm, ponnu paarkkal etc functions which the girls offer Namaskarams to the elders..
It is not seen as wrong by anyone till date..
Is a girl as described above prohibited from offering Namaskarams during family functions like Sraadhams.. Bhagavat Seva etc
When some death occurs, god forbid, the final Namaskarams are offered before the body is carried to the burial ground.. Is there any exemption for the girls of the above category from offering Namaskarams..
At least a hundred more similar situations come to my mind..
No, there is no such prohibition among ladies Palakkad Iyers..
And that fact is the filter for majority of the members.. or it should be .. in this group..
Saashataangam should mean ashtaangaiH saha.. obviously meaning, with eight limbs..,
it must be very uncomfortable for a lady to lie down prostrate.. especially to press to the ground angas or physical organs from neck to knee, for physiological reasons and therefore they are exempted from Saashtaangam..
That is for all ladies irrespective of age or status..
And every limb is called an angam.. So paying respect even through one Angam, many be the hand or even fingertips should qualify for anga namaskaram..

we make a lot of fuss about rituals and practices rather than appreciating the core spirit

Often we make a lot of fuss about rituals and practices rather than appreciating the core spirit behind the rituals and observations..
Often, more than the staple part of the ritual which reflects the spirit of the matter, the peripheral preparatory or incidental practices are observed more faithfully and in the long run, often the core issue is even relegated to oblivion.

Wearing a particular dress or wearing dress in a particular manner or having a shave or tonsure or using some toilet material for bath.. all these are peripheral..
However in connection with certain rituals we restrict and regulate such routine practices.. That is okay.
But in the long run, the rituals hold the sway.. and even mild deviation from some silly practices are termed as sinful.

Surely, this is not the idea.. this is not the spirit of the rituals.
Many rituals have procedural niceties which are just optional. In fact the basic laws like Vedas do not say anything about such practices
But some commentators of later period are very meticulous and fussy about some such things.
Many web shastrigals too
Some conventions assume the shape of staple practices and later on people worry more about procedures rather than substance.
For example if one fails to do sraddham or tarpanam on the prescribed day he is clearly a grave sinner.

But no one can really bracket a shave or haircut before the ritual as an equally serious sin or misconduct.
However the danger lurking on the other side is that if we try to allow some leeway in the procedural aspects we may get bolder and encroach upon areas where compromise is not permitted.

If a person is clear in mind about the dividing line and if he will not be haunted by regrets later then he can relax procedural aspects.
But we need not defy old practices which are harmless..
Maturity in approach holds the key

greatest devotion, utmost love and keenest attention or alacrity for sraaddham

श्राद्धं नाम अदनीयस्य तत् स्थानीयस्य वा द्रव्यस्य प्रेत उद्देशेन श्रद्धया त्यागः
śrāddhaṁ nāma adanīyasya tat sthānīyasya vā dravyasya preta uddeśena śraddhayā tyāgaḥ
from Mitakshari commentary of Vijnaaneshwara for Yajnavalkya smriti

While introducing the subject of Sharaaddham in his Mitakshari commentary of Yajnavalkya Smriti, the scholar Vijnaaneshwara defines Sraddham as above

Sraddham is the ritual or process of providing or offering sumptuous food to the departed elder, with most affectionate and sincere remembrance of such departed kin (and perhaps his elders too). The Conduct of Sraddham can be through offering eatables, food ready to eat, or as substitute for such eatables, one could offer money or valuables of matching value and worth. Moreover, such offer should be by way of relinquishment in favour of the one to whom we offer such food or wealth. The kartha should make the offering as irrevocable and he should make it with the greatest devotion, utmost love and keenest attention or alacrity.

Mitakshari is not merely a commentary on spirituality. It is the greatest treatise on Hindu Law even to this day.

discussion on some brahmin rituals and their complexities

The discussion starts with the issue as to how many Darbhas we should use as Asanam pavitram and so on while performing rituals. Incidentally, many other connected issues are also covered. I am giving below the relevant portions contained in my answers

The usual number of two darbhas two is the minimum. For devakaryams and Shubhakaryams the number should be even or multiples of two and for pitrukaryams it is three. That is all

Therefore, dwivachanam is not too relevant or mandatory everywhere. If you are particular, you can use dwivachanam when you use just two darbhas. Karakas we follow are not having the force of any Vedic mantram

Pavitram and darbhas we should use for pitrukaryams is three. However, for Shubhakaryam we use even number conventionally

For example, for Avaniavittam or upakarmam the vadhyar will give darbhas, Asanam and pavitram with two strands. However for pitru Tarpanam, the number will be three.. The two is minimum. In some cases and if we choose we can use darbhas for good purpose in multiples of two. This is a very basic idea. The person who made the query is asking about a grammar issue. Why are we using bahuvachanam instead of dwivachanam. The only answer could be that people were not stingy about dharba, and they used multiple pair strands for Shubhakaryam.

Also, for pretakaryam they use single strand pavitram..

in fact the subject is so wide. I have before me some ten or twelve standard texts. Including all the famous commentators.. Each book in Sanskrit, with commentary too in Sanskrit would run on average to eight hundred pages. Some books are in Grantham script too. What I discover from the explanations given by some commentators is that they have considered the pramanams only partially and they have not attempted to explain possible contradictions elsewhere in the same txt or elsewhere.. And in each text we would find some comments would be the compilation of opinions of a large number of rishis, and each one may differ with others even on minor issues. For example, there is a lot of dispute as to whether we can place Tulasi on the right ear of a dead body. While some authorities take the view that it is a sacred act, some say it is desecration of the divine plant.. The disputes will go on and on, even on minor matters.

However, on major issues, if we follow the Sutram prescribed for the Sakha, we will get a consensus.

What I want to state is that i could cover only ten to fifteen pages of Sanskrit in a few hours on a day, and usually I try to find answers by poring over the subject on the issue raised. In addition, there is a risk in that. Some other portion of the text in a different context would give a different interpretation altogether. Therefore, our clarifications can be done on the basis of only specific parameters.. God knows whether it is within my reach. A professional priest or an upanyasakara cannot do that because his interest is more in dishing out what he knows and he has little time for study. He has to eke out a livelihood too.

A typical example. Some commentators would say that a Sraddham done on black Thrayodashi would affect the longevity of the kartha, his eldest son, or wife.. Nevertheless, if the thithi of the father or mother falls on that day he has to perform Sraddham without fail. No smriti allows any exception. And at the same time the Thrayodashi in Mahalayapaksham is considered Gajachaya punya alam and many treat it as the holiest period for doing Sraddham..

They perform the Sraddham for many purposes on Chaturdashi for accidental deaths, death of fallen people, and or death in war, as a result of murder etc., and that Sraddham according to some can be done only as Ekodishtam, something like the Sraddham on the eleventh day of death for pretham. But if that thithi happens to be the date of death, of a parent, then there is no escape, though the action can be visited with doshas and papas.

Moreover, in such situations even the sages flounder. How can we talk authoritatively about even such matters

The meanings of marriage ceremonies is another controversy.

In addition, I read somewhere about yan me maathaa pralulopa... etc. Some say it is an absolute insult tow womanhood. But we the apastambhiyas have to give ahuti for mother, paternal grandmother, paternal great grandmother and their spouses chanting that mantram only. Often ignorance seems to be blissful.

For pitru Tarpanam the number of darbhas is three. No two views about it.. But I have seen loukeeka, vaideeka people who become ad-hoc priests for Tarpanam alone just uniformly distributing pavitram of two strands.. Koorcham of two strands etc, which is not permitted.

The major smritis, including the Yajnavalkya underline the importance of elderly ladies, mother, grandmothers, aunts and elder sisters whose views are to be considered when there are certain unique rituals or practices, not of the mainstream type, as and not opposed to Vedas, are practiced by the family or the groups in the locality.. Even the aathu Vadhyar would ask us to consult the elderly women before taking such decisions. Alas, now we are left with a generation of elderly women too who can do precious little. Anyway, many such women have a tendency to bluff rather than pleading ignorance. Male or female, vaideeka, pandita or loukeeka should give opinions only after considering the precedents. Brahmins were valued because even at the risk of their lives they would not lie or mislead. However, can we claim that credit now?

I do not confine myself to Subhashitams. Actually I was trying to give my views to members in many exclusive groups who are not conscious of the sacredness of the issue. And when we discuss serious points, they make slapstick comments.. Even elderly and otherwise sensible Iyers and pattars are experts in trivializing the issues.. I am helpless.

Other subject is Sanskrit literature. There too, the standard of discussion is below decent standards. In addition, the genuinely learned gurus do not participate at all.

Of course, I am trying to create a parallel archive. Also, I am trying to record and jot down notes on all issues I come across in such matters.

But I am always careful not to enter any discussion on law, taxation and politics. The first two are my professional wealth.

Smriti mukthaaphalam of Vaidyanatha Deekshita is neither samkshepam nor wide. In a total of 1500 pages or so in Sanskrit, it gives almost all explanations we need. And each statement in that treatise is backed up by a lot of references, which can lead us to other wider texts. On issues covered more instances from Puranas and local stories and numerous conflicting smritis are given as illustration and they are not quoted from Shruti or Vedas.. Therefore, I can understand the problem.

However, today we lack interested scholars who could spend time explaining things, and self-study is nearly impossible.

The texts of Hemadri, madhaveeyam smritichandrika nirnayasindhu dharmasindhu and many other books in Sanskrit are available in the web. Most of the dharma sootras and grihya sootras too, are available for download, but all the texts are available in either Devanagari or Granthalipi. Now data is not the issue. Reading and understanding is quite a serious challenge.

who should perform sraaadham

All the sons have to perform Sraddham, individually. The sons can perform it jointly only if there is no partition and there is sharing of kitchen or hearth. It is not correct to presume that the younger brothers can join the elder brother for conducting Sraddham. Even if two brothers are living in the same house in different portions cooking separately, they have to perform Sraddham independently. There is a slender and unsubstantiated loukeeka view that if the mother is alive and the father gone, all the sons can gather at the mother’s place and do Sraddham. When a son dies, the duty of performing Sraddham abates with him, but his son of the deceased, will be invoking the paternal grandfather in Rudra roopa, the second generation, while performing Sraddham for his own father. During Sapindeekaranam, the great great grandfather will be bidden adieu with honour as Vriddha pitaamaha.

tarpanams

Tarpanams
Rik Tarpananam ( respectful offering of water and Tilam or gingely) is Tarpanam chanting detailed Vedic mantras ..
By Rik is meant a short invocation from Veda ( any Veda.. rig, yajur or Sama)
In our tarapnams, we offer tilam (gingely) and water to three generations of our parents in the paternal side, and three generations in the maternal side..
Father, Grand father, great grandfather, and their spouses, and maternal grandfather, maternal great granfather and maternal great great grandfather and their spouses..( this is called Ubhayavamsha piru tarapanam)
While performing tarpanams, we offer ellu or tilam to Vasu Rudra Aditya forms of our pitrus..
the first generation like father, mother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother etc as in the Vasu form,
the second generation paternal grandfather paternal grandmother, maternal great grandfather maternal grandmother, are in the rudra form
and
the third higher generation paternal great grandfather, paternal great grandmother ,, maternal great great grandfather and maternal great grand grand mother are in the aditya form..
If any of one generation of these is alive, then the pithru of next higher generation usually are substituted in their place.
For every offer of three tilatarpanams, some mention the gothram, roopam (vasu rudra aditya) name of the pithru and offer tarpanam.. three times with ellu and water..
If names are not known the designation alone is given.. or we can use KrishnaSharma nama...Gauree namnee, Lakshmee naamnee etc too for the pithrus..
While offering tarapanams for each Vasu, Rudra and Aditya roopa Pithrus, according to the rules, there are separate vedic mantras called Riks to be chanted..
So in toto in amavasys tarpanam, twelve riks will have to be chanted.. and it can consume some time..
Nowadays, as a shortcut, and many as per tradition do not chant riks but straightaway offer tarpanam on the koorcham made of dharba grass where the pitrus are invoked..
Some use separate koorchams for paternal side and maternal side..Some use the same koorcham.. for all the pithrus
Koorcham is a few strands of darbha with a knot in it..
The Tarpanam with Rik is where the performer chants the Riks or separate vedic mantras for Vasu Rudra Aditya pitrus and some perform it without chanting riks too.. the procedure of tarpanam for Rigvedis, Yajurvedis and Samavedis is the same, but certain mantrams and rituals very slightly for different Sakhas..
Ubhayavamshapitrutarpanams are performed on Amavasyas,Sankramanam, Grahanams etc.. Pitru tarpanams for paternal side only is done as a part of Sraaddham..

tarpanams can be done every day too.. In fact in brahmayajnam we do pitru tarpanam every day.. Such things are beside the point.. I was just trying to explain the standard and usual tarpanams we do at present..

Loosely the explanation is this. When one departs he attains a sort of equality with the divine beings and occupy the regions meant for them. Gods include basis rudras and adityas. And the pitrus are assigned status accodin g to their seniority. First generation are vasus second generation rudras and third generation adityas. This is the most simple way of putting it.
It was ponted out that followers of Ashvalayana Sutras do not use Riks during tarpanam. My reply to that is
I have no personal knowledge about ashvalayana sootram.. Being a follower of Krishna Yajurveda, Apastambha and sometimes Bodhayana Sutrams govern my rituals.. About other sutras, I have texts with me but there was not occasions to study in detail or practice such texts.. My knowledge there is peripheral..

gothra rules, pitu karyams

Our gothra rules are essentially patrilineal.. And our conduct is governed by sutras.. Sroutha, Dharma, Grihya and Sulabha of various sages. For example the four sutras prescribed for the Yajurveda smarthas who form the majority of Palakkad and Tamil Iyers, are those of Apastamabha.. Another sootram very near to Apastamabha is Bodhayana.. Which also relates to Yajurveda.

In general there are two types of relatives in patrilineal order.. The father, grandfather, the great grandfather and their horizontal male siblings in general would constitute Sapindas.. And at some stage these people will be sharing pindams. This relationship is very close. Then comes the samaanodhakas or dayadhis.. ( considered in a loose way) who can extend up to seven generation.. [And even more generations according to some sages Manu says Sapindas is seven generations up and down, and samanodhaka is when, even belonging to the same gothram, the generation gap is so huge that the name of the common ancestor is not known.. ( here the common ancestor is not the pravaram)]

The sapindas, and if possible the samanodhakas too form a joint family, and when some death occurs, they are all expected to be in grief and they are supposed to gather together under one roof and kitchen nearest to where the Paashanam ( the stone) invoking the dead persons preta is invoked.. The family is supposed to observe ten days pula or theettu, and on the tenth day, in addition to the sons of the deceased, all the relatives upto seven generation are expected to offer water drenched in clothe and thilam at the pit where the pashanam is placed.. The people of lesser age than the deceased should have vapanam or haircut too.
So the rules for the paternal relatives are very clear-cut;
For relatives from the maternal side, no tarpanam is done. No vapanam.. and the maximum days of aashoucham is three days.. The period may be less for cousins.. These are also prescribed in shastras..
Most of the rules are prescribed by shastras, but many such rules have been relaxed by great souls like Vaidyanatha Deekshita.
Now we may not be able to reach scholars who have mastered the sootras of Apastamaba etc.. But we regulate our conduct according to the practices established by traditions and this may vary from family to family .. But the basic rules are the same.
the attasradham or aabdeekam is considered equivalent to sapindeekarana sradham.. and it is a part and parcel of the Shodasha Sraadhams..
That way it has to be performed by the eldest.. who did the sapindeekaranam..
But now the attasradham is only conducted as a parvana sradham.. So the argument that brothers living taking food in different kitchens should do sradhams separately is also valid.

But the reasonable conclusion appears to be that the attasradham has to be conducted by the eldest..
As a social rule the partition of properties among brothers is done on the Shubhasweekaram day after the atta shraddham..
So the siblings are supposed to meet together for the maasika, etc sixteen sraddhams and the sodhakakumbham ceremony preceding them and perform together..

the rituals can be postponed minimally in life threatening situation

A query was made as to whether we could have some relaxations in pitru karyams consequent to the impact of Kovid 19.
Yes, the rituals can be postponed minimally because it is a life threatening situation
However this cannot be taken as a licence to skip the rituals totally. We have to resume things at the earlist
My take on the issue
These are aapad dharmas.
It is not that we should not do the sraddham in time.
It is only that the karma should not be given up just because the date was over and that it should be done later
There are many prayaschitthams like fasting on the defaulted day and chanting thousands if gayatri.. which are all beyond our capacity.
The exceptions are only when the karma is impossible.
It cannot be taken as excuse for not doing the Karma in time for flimsy reasons quoting the exceptions.
Brahmins have no choice to select the easy way out.
Shastras say brahmana's body is not for enjoyment
ब्राह्मणस्य तु देहोऽयं नोपभोगाय कल्पते।
इहक्ळेशाय महते प्रेत्यानन्त सुखाय च॥
brāhmaṇasya tu deho'yaṁ nopabhogāya kalpate|
ihakḻeśāya mahate pretyānanta sukhāya ca||
In his worldly life the body of a brahmin ( and a learned man) is only for toiling, observing all the rituals, studies, learning and teaching.. It is toil in this world to gain great virtue which are sure to take them to eternal bliss in their life in heaven..
So when brahmins are told to lead very strict and disciplined life, they should never complain.. This is their duty for the benefit of the whole universe and that alone can lead them to eternal bliss ever after..
If Brahmin is not able to practice what is expected of him, he does not deserve to be addressed by that name..

if there is no conflictiong words in the mantram that might carry wrong sense, there is no great mistake in chanting that on a different occasion.

The sankalpam ( the formal declaration in ornate Sanskrit about what we plan to do as a religious ritual) and the vedic riks (mantras or quotes) we chant are just like fillers of time while performing the ritual with something divine.. a vedic mantra.. or a few nice words in Sanskrit..
We have to take care not to chant mantrams without understanding what we do because we are likely to deliver the wrong meaning and sense..
And that can make us look like fools before any knowledgeable audience..
Here thereis hardly any such problem,, because no one knows what he is doing.. ..
The mantras from Vedas, and the ritualistic slokas have been quoted and transposed by various people to various other rituals and for various purposes too.
And the original context of the mantras and chants either doing tarpanam to pitrus or doing harati to god has very little in common..
So, if there is no conflictiong words in the mantram that might carry wrong sense, there is no great mistake in chanting that on a different occasion.. and in the way one has known and learnt
The old teachers made a fuss about verbatim reproduction only because they had a chance to control the people in general with threats if there is even minor variation..
This tendency is manifest not only which practicing rituals in Hinduism, but that sort of rigidity is there in every religion..
The general rule is that we should worship god with heart and mind pure, body pure.. and the worship should be a matter between the devotee and the deity..
Often we tend to make fuss about minor procedural matters..
That is not necessary.
In fact, I posted a few vedic mantras only because I had posted them in manuscript earlier and many were not able to discern my bad handwriting..
So I processed the material in legible words in the word processor..
That is all.. There could be even unexpected spelling errors..
I am not an authority on anything.. I am nowhere near perfection.
I am just a wayfarer, a traveller..
I just share a little from what I read and experience from my journey of curiosity. and in my own way.. and my presentation is limited to what I know, what I understood, and such knowledge is faulty, incomplete..
I never ask anyone to follow anything..
And if and when I do a pooja( formal prayer and worship session) , it is just a private matter between me and my God..
And in a pooja only two need bother..
The worshipper and the worshipped.
Others have little role.

grahana tarpanam and one Sankrama Tarpanam on the same day separately

there was a sort of argument as to performing two tharpanams.. one grahana tarpanam and one Sankrama Tarpanam on the same day separately.
The actual position is as follows.
Grahanam is a punyakalam.. a specific period..
The tarpanam on that occasion is a stand alone karma.. and the normal time etc do not apply for that..
Normally no tarpanam is done during night.. but for chandragrahanam, the tarpanam has to be done at the middle or after the middle of the grahanam and the chandra grahanam occurs during night only..
And here the tarpanam is around 3 AM and our Indian day starts with suryodayaa..
So three in the night is yesterday.. How can you follow English AM and PM for tarpanam.
Even otherwise, is there any bar on more than one tarpanam in a day..? Where is it prescribed..? The answer is that there is no restriction
Even when sradham comes on Amavasya, we have to do Amavasya Darsha Sraddham and tarpanam.. for ubhayavamsha pitrus and then tarpanam during sraddham..
It is an established rule that Grahana Tarpanam and Sankaramana or Darsha Tarpanam if they happen on the same day have to be done separately.. There is no rule that more than one tarpanam should not be done...

a ritualisstic advise

A question was put to me
Sir namaskaram. Need some kind advise. My relation had fixed poonal for his only son on April 2nd at Tirunelveli. He and his family flew from the USA for the function. Suddenly on March 28 his father ( grand father of the vatu ) died. Cannot they perform poonal after the graheyagyam ?
Thanks. Regards

My answer
after Sapind
eekaranam.. of course 13 th day is only subhasweekaram..
The brahmopadesham and upanayanam can be conducted.. and if possible without too much of ostentation.. Some believe the seethakam is upto 45 days after sapindeekaranam, some believe it is upto six months and some would say it is upto one year.. Anyway, if at all any restrictions are there it is only for the Kartha .. the eldest son who performs the karmam..
The seethakam does not apply to the Vatu who is grandson.. Considering all the facts the function can be conducted without much pomp any good day after subhasweekaram..
If at all there is any emotional reservation is there for the father of the Vatu if he is the son of the deceased, the brahmopadesham can be done by some immediate kin like chitthappa or mama.. But even that is not necessary..
In fact the Pithrus are watching and every brahmopadesham in their gothram will only give them happiness..
I would conclude that the function can be conducted on any good day after the 13th day.. Only thing is that the compulsor sodhaka kumbham or maseeka or any of the shodasha sraddham days should not be used for the function..
