People who are just living on, filling their time doing physical activities, engaging in conversation and debates, trying to crack jokes and telling funny anecdotes, getting engaged in planning, calculation and construction activities and through all these activities running around ceaselessly from one morning to the next morning, as also people who are always getting worried about their finances and crying for money and more money, simply are forgetting to notice the arrival of their death.

Just disengage yourself from the grinding stone for some moments and try to be calm and peaceful. Pressures of work and worries about finances are always there. If we do not try to stand aloof and watch at ourselves at least for a few moments once in a while, we would be nowhere when the God holding a noose arrives atop a buffalo ready to drag us away.

ജീവിതം യാന്ത്രികമായി ജീവിച്ചു പോകുന്നവര്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും ശാരീരികമായ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നവര്‍, സംസാരിച്ചും, തര്‍ക്കിച്ചും ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്തും ഫലിതം പറഞ്ഞും പരിഹസിച്ചും കണക്കു കൂട്ടിയും കിഴിച്ചും പദ്ധതി ഇട്ടുകൊണ്ടേ ഇരിക്കുന്നവര്‍, ഇപ്രകാരം ഒരു രാവിലെ തുടങ്ങിയാല്‍ അടുത്ത പുലരി വരെ വട്ടം കറങ്ങി ഓടി നടക്കുന്നവര്‍, സാമ്പത്തികമായ വേവലാതികളും ലാഭത്തിനുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള ആഗ്രഹവും മൂത്ത് പണം, വീണ്ടും പണം എന്ന് ഉരുവിട്ടുകൊണ്ട് നാളുകള്‍ തള്ളിനീക്കുന്നവര്‍, ഇത്തരം മനുഷ്യര്‍ക്ക് മരണം അടുത്തെത്തിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യം ഓര്‍ക്കാന്‍ സമയമെവിടെ ?

ജീവിതത്തില്‍ വല്ലപ്പോഴുമൊക്കെ ജീവിതമാവുന്ന എപ്പോഴും ചലിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന എണ്ണച്ചക്ക് വലിച്ചു കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നത് നിര്‍ത്തി മാറിനിന്നു സ്വയം തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുക. വേവലാതികള്‍ക്ക് വല്ലപ്പോഴുമൊക്കെ അവധി കൊടുക്കുക. സ്വയം ശാന്തനായി തന്നേത്തന്നെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു നോക്കു. ജോലിയുടെയും ജീവിതത്തിന്‍റെയും സംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങളും സാമ്പത്തികമായ വെല്ലുവിളികളും ഇല്ലാത്ത സമയം ഒരിക്കലും ഉണ്ടാവില്ല. ഇതില്‍നിന്നൊക്കെ കുറെ സമയമെങ്കിലും മാറി നില്‍ക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ നമ്മുടെ കഴുത്തില്‍ കെട്ടുവാനുള്ള കയറും കൈയിലേന്തി പോത്തിന്‍റെ പുറത്ത്കയറി നമ്മെ കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ ഒരാള്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ നിസ്സഹായതയല്ലാതെ ഒന്നും നമുക്ക് കൈമുതലായി ഉണ്ടാവില്ല.

അല്പസമയം എങ്കിലും അല്ലലില്ലാതെ ജീവിക്കണ്ടേ ?

In this world of woes submerged under the dark cloud of gloom and illusion, the pride about a person being physically attractive (during his prime stage in life) is very shortlived light the brilliant flashes of lighting appearing from dark clouds for small periods. The man with discretion and wisdom should never feel arrogant and overly proud about his own personal appearance and charisma although he would look wonderfully attractive and vivacious for the time being.

संसार in this world of woes मोह illusion प्रसरे spread घने heavy cloud, heavily clouded अस्मिन् this विद्युत् लता flashes of lighting विस्फुरितं appearing brighly and temporarily हि रूपं indeed is the attractive physical form, attractive physical appearance तस्मात् therefore सुधिया by a sensisble person विचार्य after great contemplation साश्चर्य curiously wonderful सौन्दर्य attractiveness विलास vivacity, activeness दर्पः arrogance न कार्यः should not be entertained.

തസ്മാന്ന കാര്യഃ സുധിയാ വിചാര്യ സാശ്ചര്യ സൌന്ദര്യ വിലാസ ദര്‍പഃ ।

സംസാര മോഹപ്രസരേ ഘനേഽസ്മിന്‍ വിദ്യുല്ലതാവിസ്ഫുരിതം ഹി രൂപം॥

അജ്ഞതയും മിഥ്യാബോധവും നിറഞ്ഞ, അന്ധകാരം കൊടികുത്തി വാഴുന്ന നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍, കാര്‍മേഘങ്ങള്‍ പോലെ ഇരുണ്ടു കൂടി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ആകാശത്തില്‍ വല്ലപ്പോഴും വെട്ടിത്തിളങ്ങുന്ന മിന്നല്‍പ്പിണര്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് തിളങ്ങി വീശി കെട്ടടങ്ങുന്നതു പോലെയാണ് ശാരീരിക സൌന്ദര്യം ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ പ്രസരിപ്പും എല്ലാം വളരെ പരിമിതമായ കാലയളവില്‍ മാത്രം തെളിഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്നതും പിന്നീട് ഇല്ലാതാവുന്നതും.

ആ വസ്തുത ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ബുദ്ധിയും വിവേകവും ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യന്‍ തന്‍റെ  ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ സൌന്ദര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രസരിപ്പിനെക്കുരിച്ചും ഒരു പരിധിക്കപ്പുറം അഹങ്കരിക്കുന്നത് എല്ലായിപ്പോഴും ഒഴിവാക്കേണ്ടതാണ്..

The man of class, the man of high birth, the man of great character should ever be prepared; he should never hesitate, to approach great personages with utter humility and keeping heads bent down showing great respect. This indeed is the hallmark of person’s class, birth and breeding in a great family.

This is the sure means, the method that would never fail him in learning, accumulating and keeping intact one’s great qualities and virtues

A very worthy advice from Darpadalanam of Kshemendra, one of the greatest poets, grammarians and linguists of Sanskrit

Great scholars, poets, bold warriors, artists and even sages often wait for the pleasure of rich people, just like sick people assemble at the doors of a doctor. No one would ever listen to the words of a poor man even if those words are very fair, reasonable and logical. However, people celebrate the words uttered by affluenc people even if such words and cruel, harsh and untruthful.

പണ്ഡിതാഃ കവയഃ ശൂരാഃ കലാവന്തസ്തപസ്വിനഃ

വൈദ്യസ്യേവ സവിത്തസ്യ വീക്ഷ്യന്തേ മുഖമാതുരാഃ||

ഹേതുപ്രമാണയുക്തം വാക്യം ന ശ്രൂയതേ ദരിദ്രസ്യ|

അപ്യതിപരുഷമസത്യം പൂജ്യം വാക്യം സമൃദ്ധസ്യ||

മഹാന്മാരായ പണ്ഡിതന്‍മാരും കവികളും ധീരരായ പോരാളികളും കലാകാരന്മാരും, എന്തിന് ഋഷികള്‍ പോലും പണക്കാരന്റെ മുന്നില്‍ അയാളുടെ പ്രീതിയും കാത്ത് സുഖക്കേടു വന്നു വലയുന്ന രോഗി വൈദ്യന്റെ വീട്ടുമുറ്റത്ത് എന്നപോലെ കാത്തു കിടക്കുന്നു.

ഒരു ദരിദ്രന്‍ പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകള്‍ അവ എത്ര നീതിയുക്തങ്ങള്‍ ആയാലും, നന്മ നിറഞ്ഞവ ആണെങ്കിലും സത്യസന്ധങ്ങള്‍ ആയാലും ആരും കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ മിനക്കെടുകയില്ല. പക്ഷെ ഒരു ധനികന്റെ വാക്കുകള്‍ അവ ക്രൂരങ്ങള്‍ ആയാലും അര്‍ത്ഥമില്ലാത്ത ജല്പനങ്ങള്‍ ആയാലും, വെറും പൊളിയായാലും അതൊക്കെ കേള്‍ക്കുവാനും ആദരപൂര്‍വ്വം തലകുലുക്കുവാനും എല്ലാം എത്രയോ പേര്‍ ഉണ്ടാവും.

द्वेषः कस्य न दोषाय प्रीतिः कस्य न भूतये।

दर्पः कस्य न पाताय नोन्नत्यै कस्य नम्रता॥

क्षेमेन्द्रः दर्पदलने॥

A simple yet very forceful poser by the great poet Kshemendra in his Darpadalana

Can enmity be of no disadvantage for anyone?

Can the pleasing attitude of anyone go without benefit for all?

Can arrogance exist without causing abysmal fall for one who entertains it?

and

Can humility ever fail to take one to great heights in his life

The poet uses double negatives.. perhaps to give us time to think and let the thought sink in.. What he says is pure and simple.. but his thoughts convey eternal truth..

Enmity with someone, with or without justification, would cause damage only.. The damage might be minor or serious..

A pleasant demeanour and behaviour is the best exercise in public relations.. It is an attribute that can attract others so easily..

However learned we are, however sincere and generous our course of action is, if we arrogant, we would be putting out the whole world.. we would be turning the whole lot of people against us.. knowingly or unknowingly..

And humility is a great decoration for the capable persons, a passport and visa to even unreachable terrain.. And humility is the only escape route for the persons who are less endowed..

The sloka is just a reiterations of what we really know..

But a very appropriate reminder for us..

study with no practice is of no use..

अनुष्ठानेन रहिता पाठमात्रेण केवलं।

रञ्ज्यत्येव या लोकान् किं तया शुकविद्यया॥

दर्पदलने ३-३१

anuṣṭhānena rahitā pāṭhamātreṇa kevalaṁ|

A very relevant query about the effectiveness of education..

What is the use for such education which is just parrot like rendering and repetition ,

education which is just rendered faithfully as per the lessons prescribed,

education rendered without real application of its contents for either equipping the students to put what they learned to proper and useful action

education that would provide mere entertainment the people and provide means of just filling up time without no proper worth or utility ?

The greatest capital the society can provide for its future generations is, without doubt, education.. Education should find practical applications to equip the students with the capacity to fend for themselves and enable them to move the society and the nation forward to greater heights of progress and prosperity..

Routine, parrot like repetition of texts would not benefit anyone in real terms, even though there can be some entertainment and waste of time through such activities..
