trials and tribulations, sorrows visit a person for very long periods

प्रायेण च निसर्गत एवानायतस्वभाव भङ्गुराणि सुखानि आयतन स्वभावानि च दुःखानि॥

बाणभट्टविरचिते कादंबर्याः पूर्वभागे॥

prāyeṇa ca nisargata evānāyatasvabhāva bhaṅgurāṇi sukhāni āyatana svabhāvāni ca duḥkhāni||

bānabhaṭṭaviracite kādaṁbaryāḥ pūrvabhāge||

Verily, by their inherent nature comforts and happiness, even when they visit a person are of very short duration and their existence is very fragile. However trials and tribulations, sorrows visit a person for very long periods and manage to cling to him much longer

This quote is from Bhanabhatta’s classic, Kadambari. This is the experience with most of us most of the time. But there is a fleeting comfort to read that fact reinforced by a master author.

Analysis.

प्रायेण generally निसर्गतः by their very nature च too अनायत fleeting, shortlived स्वभाव भङ्गुराणि esily brittle and fragile सुखानि state of happiness, comfort भवन्ति. Are तदा एव similarly आयतन of very prolonged, long living स्वभावानि nature दुःखानि च are sorrows, trials and tribulations.

धीरमपि प्रयत्नवन्तमपि पुरुषमियं खलीकरोति लक्ष्मी

विद्वांसमपि सचेतनमपि महासत्वमपि अभिजातमपि धीरमपि प्रयत्नवन्तमपि पुरुषमियं खलीकरोति लक्ष्मी॥

बाणभट्टविरचिते कादंबर्याः पूर्वभागे॥

vidvāṁsamapi sacetanamapi mahāsatvamapi abhijātamapi dhīramapi prayatnavantamapi puruṣamiyaṁ khalīkaroti lakṣmī||

bānabhaṭṭavircite kādaṁbaryāḥ pūrvabhāge||

A very wise statement by the great Poet Banabhatta in his legendary Gadhyakaavyam.. Kaadambari..

The irrepressible and quirky minded goddess of wealth Lakshmi can convert even a man

who is learned,

who is sensitive and kind,

who is very strong physically and mentally,

who is high born,

who is very bold and steadfast

and

who is industrious

into a bad, evil minded and wayward person

Lakshmi is the Goddess who makes one affluent.. Possession of wealth often makes one drunk with arrogance, and easy money makes him a spendthrift and pleasure loving, and makes him prone to all bad habits and bad company too which is easy to acquire when on has easy money to throw around

Of course, if one has money and he would spend it for his own good and the welfare of others, that would be nice..

But that does not happen very often..

People of evil mind have extra efficiency when engaged in destructive and dirty work..

The quote above from many texts.. prominent among them, Banabhattas Kadambari, Subandhus Vasavadatta, Subhashita manjari, Subhashita ratna kosha and so on

( This is a case where the sloka which was in circulation as a popular adage has been used in their work by many authors according to the context occurring in their stories )

The meaning of the Sloka is

When some very dirty task is to be executed, the cruel and evil people assume extra efficiency to perform such work

The owls could get a clear perception of things around it only in pitch darkness since its eyesight become acute then alone and enables it to perceive the forms of the things around in great clarity..

Normally good people would be enthusiastic when they are entrusted with tasks which will be of great benefit to one an all..

But people with evil and perverted mind get the kicks only when dirty tasks are assigned to them.. This is known as Sadism.

Normal living beings gain more and more eyesight as the light increases.. But owls would see clearly only in darkness..

Owls are somehow ad libbed with evil in almost all societies.. Apart from their fearsome eyes, are they really that bad..? we do not know.. Owl is a nocturnal bird.. So it has to see in darkness or in limited light if they have to move around, catch prey and survive..

(Sadism is a type of behaviour in which a person obtains pleasure from hurting other people and making them suffer physically or mentally.)
