Pranayamam during Sandhyopaasana
in fact if we do the thrikaala sandhya, and gayatri japam, we would do 12 Pranayamas for each.. one for Sandhya Sankalpam, one for Gayatri Sankalpam and ten each as preliminary for Gayatri japam.. and often one more for the Prayaschitta arghym.. (prior to the prayaschittam one pranayamam each)..
The fingering for Pranayamam.. that is use of fingers to close the nostril varies according to the ashramas,, brahmacharya grihasta etc..
the air should be let in through the left nostril. the air should be kept filled in the lung till the mantra of om bhoo.... amrutam brahma is
Afterthat the air should be left out through the right nostril..
According to our smartha pranayamam, the time for inhaling and exhaling should be the same..
On this issue various texts differ they even prescribe 1-4-2 ratio for inhaling retaining and exhaling speed..(Swami Sivananda Prescribes this rate, for example)
When one nostril is used the other should be closed.
Brahmacharis and Sannyasins (initiates and recluses) use the right Thumb, ring finger and small finger... to close the nostrils
this is called prana mudra.. (householders)use all the fingers..
Two for right and three for left nostril ..
Two fingers, for right and three for left.. nostrils
Some people perform two pranayamas each for sankalpams.. instead of single..
And on very solemn occasions like maha sankalpam for Upakarmam, Grahanam etc three pranayamams are done before chanting ..tadeva lagnam..(तदेव लग्नं .......)
the inhalation is Pooraka, retention is Kumbhaka and exhalation is rechakam..
