this life material just changes bodies like worn out garments and appear again in new clothes

I am inclined to believe the idea found reiterated in HInduism that our existence is not restricted to the period between the birth and death. even without any direct proof...
Rather, like the blessed lord said in Gita, this life material just changes bodies like worn out garments and appear again in new clothes..
The varied stages of growth and maturity in mind and physique we discover among us cannot be explained in any other way..

Memories of Narayana as the vital forces depart the body

Memories of Narayana as the vital forces depart the body..
this is the ideal
Gita:
If one leaves his body and during his final hours remembers Me, surely, he attains My own qualities and merge in Me, there is no reason for any doubt on this point,
So says the Blessed Lord Krishna

the universe as a whole is happy.. the demons fless in trepidation

11-36 of Bhagavat Gita
arjuna uvāca
sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā
jagat prahṛṣyaty anurajyate ca
rakṣāḿsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddha-sańghāḥ
Arjuna Says..
"Krishna the Hrishikesha, the world unitedly meets and celbrates your praise.. the universe as a whole is happy.. the demons fless in trepidation. The divine groups of Sidhas are all offering pranams to you..'
this mantra or shlokam from Bhagavat Gita is being used as a mantram to ward off evil spirits.
. the mantramm is called Gita Thrishtup..
(may be with some variants and some bheeja akshara added0
The context of the Sloka is that when the Lord showed his universal form, the evil spirits are bolting.. True..
But Neither Vyasa, nor Krishna or Arjuna or anyone even intended this statement by Arjuna to be used as a chant by sorcerors to exorcise evil spirit..
Now half a dozen of priests sit around fire and chant this mantram in thousands and offer twigs, rice, clarified butter etc to fire and people around are delirious with bhakti and all..
One instance of disuse of the great philosophical text and misuse of the same at the hands of avaricious and showy sorecerors and priests..
This is just one instant..
This mantram now is a very effective tools with Jolsyars and priests..
Of course it is their profession.. let them earn..
But others have a right to know the facts..

the words of visionaries, and here it is the Supreme Godhead, make meanings and context

just some food for thought..
Gita, if it is interpreted in the context of that bloody war can be nothing more than many of the pep talk books that mushroomed in every age..
We have to understand it as a stand alone treatise.. and as we are believers, we have to take it as coming from the Supreme being... who is free of any contexts..
Every statement of Gita is said as spoken by Bhagavan.. shree Bhagavan Uvacha.. not Krishna or Vasudeva..
Bhagavan.. the word is profound beyond our ordinary thoughts..
Of course we can take different stands in argument..
I remember what I quoted from Bhavabhooti a few days ago.. The words of ordinary men depend on the context and meaning.. But the words of visionaries, and here it is the Supreme Godhead, make meanings and context..
True, I have often tried to criticize Gita for the different tongues it speaks.. but there the prisoner of logic in me that is speaking..
In His supreme presence, no logic is relevant.. Yato vaacho nivartane..

just ignore your thoughts and emotions, they will go away

viṣayā vinivartante nirāhārasya dehinaḥ
says GITA..
If you just ignore or starve your thoughts and emotions, they will go away on their own. You need not empty them.
Moreover, when you try to empty them consciously they will fill your mind with multiplied vigour.
Just like, if you have a boil in the rear it will disappear on its own in a couple of days if you leave alone it but could turn septic if you scratch it.

Vyashema Devahitam yad aayuH

We are trying to look at the infinite being without origin and end and the middle just from the perspective of some scriptures.
Moreover, the life span of such scriptures, even if they are the revered Vedas, are too meagre in comparison to the epoch of human existence on this earth and even more minuscule in comparison with the time span where the universe existed almost in the present shape.
Things did not happen according to the planning and programming effected by the created beings, and we will never be able to find any plan or programming for ourselves all by ourselves.
Of course, all we can do is to make an effort at maintaining the equilibrium, and even in that attempt; we are pathetically out-powered and awed.
The Vedas said.. Let us spend our lives just according to the will of the Devas.( this statement is found in all the four Vedas and also in numerous Upanishads).
In fact, wherever living beings tried to invent unconventional methods, it has only led to destruction.
The aftermath of unleashing of nuclear energy on the one hand and the occupational diseases like diabetes, epidemics like AIDs - are all the result of such adventures on the part of the living created beings.
This process is actually, what we call glani for Dharma and abhyuththaanam of Adharma perhaps as stated by the Blessed Lord in Gita-and in these matters, we are forcing His hands by our stubbornness.
If wecallenge the rhythm maintained by Him and things get out of control for humans, He has no choice other than jettisoning us.
"Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glanir Bhavathi Bharatha,
Abhyuthanam Adharmaysya Tadatmanam Srijami Aham'.

priorities in life can vary substantially according to the situations

How much each one should allocate as percentage of performance  while dealing with priorities in life can vary substantially according to the situations. Each aspect or ingredient has great value and the priorities can overlap and mutually integrate with one another too. Life is more like a cocktail. Once it is mixed, you cannot specify which ingredient is more delectable.
When you are indisposed, the physician takes over aspects other than get secondary importance. Kalidasa said शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम्..(it is a quote from KumaraSambhavam of Kalidasa.. meaning.. this human body is the primary instrument of supreme importance and no virtuous deeds are possible without this body.)

The maintenance of this physical body is the top priority, as you can be functional only if your body is in working condition. In fact, the scriptures prescribe cancelIation of all other routines of life if your health is in a bad condition.
Our hoary traditions of education in Gurukulams prepared and equipped the wards for all sorts of challenges in the life on earth and beyond. Absolut disciple and obedience to the preceptor and his family, complete equality among fellow-scholars irrespective of whether they are princes or class Brahmins or simpletons was the distinctive feature of our educational system.

See the difference between Krishna the Prince and Kuchela or Sadhana the penniless Brahmin while they took training in the hermitage of Sage Sandeepani. Bothe face similar tough and tortuous tasks and both got treatment on equal footing. This is just an example.
Of course, keenness in educational activities and efficiency decided the relative merit of each ward. ।4.38।।, प्रज्ञानं ब्रह्म etc., Were not empty slogans anyway.
Thousands of texts and scriptures right from Rigveda and Mahabharatham and Arthasastram of Chanakya onwards, have underlined the importance of money, its management and fiscal wellbeing.

The discussion can fill thousands of pages.
Remember, कोशमूलो हि दण्डः declare the saint cum political guru Chanakya.

We have to work, work hard, work as long as we live. The blessed Lord Krishna said in Bhagavat Gita.
gita

Suffice to say, we have to regulate our lives ever ensuring that we maintain the balance and equilibrium between the interests of Individual self and the world at large and at the same time we must assign the right priority to our own health, wealth and happiness. Never attempt to harm others. If you try to have gain by causing ruin to others, be sure that your affluence will be short-lived.

never think of the successful outcome of your action, nor expect any rewards from such action

kurvannevaiha karmāṇi jijīviṣeccchataṁ samā|
eṣa tvayi nānyatheto'sti na karma lipyate nare||
yajurveda 40-2 īśavāsya upaniśad 2

A very relevant advice contained in Yajurveda, which is reiterated in Isha Upanishad and reinforced by all spiritual text from Gita onwards.
---------------------------------
You should have desire to live for the full hundred years given to you. However, you spend that life performing noble deeds. Once you are born, you have no other option. In addition, never think of the successful outcome of your action, nor expect any rewards from such action. If you live that way, the effects of the karmas like papas and punya will never stick on to you.
------------------------------
Our existence with utter indifference to result, with keen dedication to the work on hand-- The Vedas underlined the idea, although Upanishads and Bhagavat Gita later developed this idea into the ultimate slogan or clarion call for good lifestyle.

Gita’s noble call
Meaning
Do your duty (in the best way possible) and never care much for the results, because you have control only over the deeds and not on the results
Do not become a fellow who waits anxiously for the results of your work, nor develop any propensity to be inactive.
The quotes and the comments may look very archaic since every person worth his salt reiterated the idea, and those who were successful actually lived by such dicta.
Nevertheless, they are worth remembering repeatedly as long as we live. The ideas are something like the water we drink or the air we breathe.

The idea is just an echo of Gita.

I had posted a quote about life after death as found in Brihadaranyakopanishad.
The subject is rather technical.
I had posted that in a slightly complicated manner.
In plain words the content is as follows
Sir it was actually written four or five years ago. If I wrote it today I would have made it very simple but elaborate.
The idea is just an echo of Gita.
If we do good and bad in this world and we leave for the abode of death with unfinished karma we may partially enjoy the benefits of good karma or expiate sins either in swarga or naraka but would be thrown back to this earth to finish off part of karmas which could be done only in this world.
The cycle would repeat.
But if we exist here doing things without desires and in complete surrender and of dedication to the divine we would burn off all our accumulated karmas and in addition the results of karma with offer to god will not affect us in any way.
So when we are ready to depart we would simply go to the abode of the divine from where we would not come back..
But we would be enjoying complete freedom and emancipation

Is it the same Krishna ?

The strategist and political leader who planned the war and the scholar, seer and the lifestyle adviser who motivated Arjuna and shook him out of inaction and depression to a valiant warrior. Krishna's roles are entirely different.

When you are talking about the military-strategist Krishna and not about the Master motivator Krishna, You may agree or disagree about the methods of war adopted..

However, the principles laid down in Gita, and the magic it works on Arjuna and on millions of people who read Gita even to this day, is undoubtedly sublime and matchless. If you disagree on the greatness of Bhagavat Gita, I have to disagree with you, and I will have large number of people who would support me.

The personal enmity between Duryodhana and Krishna or Krishna’s partiality if any in favour of Arjuna and the Pandavas is not at all the subject matter of either Gita or this discussion.

In fact, there is even a debate among scholars as to whether; the Krishna of Brindaban, Krishna of Mahabharata War and Krishna of Gita are the same. Some even doubt whether a long debate Between Krishna and Arjuna, a discourse of the magnitude and depth as found in Gita spanning eighteen chapters and seven hundred shlokas could ever have been delivered at the start of a war, in a battlefield.

wherever we see glory we see the presence of Krishna

yadyadvibhūtimatsatvam śrīmadūrjitameva vā|
tattadevāvagaccha tvaṁ mama tejoṁśasambhavam||
— bhagavadgītā 10-41
"Every such being as is glorious, brilliant and powerful, know that to be a part manifestation of My glory."
So the Individuals may write or post but the steering force is the blessed Lord.. all who are His bhaktas are great equally...
chapter 11 bhagavat gita
"Therefore, do you arise and win glory; conquering foes, enjoy the affluent kingdom. These warriors stand already slain by Me; be you only an instrument, Arjuna."
for those who are the slaves of Krishna the Individuality is merged in His divine grace.. they are mere instruments.. and wherever we see glory we see the presence of Krishna who is also Rama. If we imbibe this idea and entrench it as the basis of life the will not be any conflicts or sense of superiority or inferiority.

We knock at the door of good (also called God) many times

We chant His names ,and repeat or recall nice things we have done at least in part or would love to do and make attempts to do good because we know we have serious mental reservations and drags that blick us in our attempts to do good and right.
We knock at the door of good also called God many times.. maybe..a million times.
If the door finally opens at least once .. that would be enough
There is nothing in this world that is either fully possible or that is completely impossible.

He is time..

He is time..
He said in Bagavat Gita
I am the time.. the time who would annihilate the universe when such time is ripe..
Arjuna, Even without you or for that matter without the assistance of anyone else, I can ensure that the entire army arrayed in battle in my presence could be destroyed in no time
That fellow is indeed naughty.. He can, when he has a mind, create, protect, and sing and dance with us
However, when he is in his destructive mood, he would dance the final steps over our motionless bodies..
We can just plead with Him to be calm, cool and caring to us..
Krishna bless

na me pārthāsti kartavyaṁ triṣu lokeṣu kiñcana
nānavāptamavāptavyam varta eva hi karmaṇi||3--22||
śreemadbagavadgītāyāṁ
=============
The Blessed Lord Sri Krishna Says in Gita..
Oh Arjuna, I have nothing left in this world which I should perform as if it were my bounden o duty..
There is nothing in this world which is achievable that I have not already achieved.
Still I remain in action, I do my karma..
The Lord remained as a Karmayogi because He being the Supreme person of the age when he manifested on earth, if He did not set Himself as an example and remained lazy and inactive, others also would be tempted to follow the path of inaction..
But for us the lesser mortals, the satisfaction can come from only a sense of contentment..
The Blessed Lord had the capacity to achieve anything He deemed fit, but we have our own limitations..
If we set our targets at achievable limits (अवाप्तव्यं) then alone we are likely to have a reasonable satisfaction that we have really achieved something..
For us the ordinary humans, remaining in action alone can keep the body and mind alert and active..
Here the law of inertia speaks.. every material body remains in a state of rest or of uniform motion unless it is acted upon by an external force to change that state.. ( Remember Newton)
Usually we are in a state of mental and physical inertia.. see how difficult it is to get out of bed..?
Usually our role models are Kumbhakarna or Rip van winkle..
It is said that Winston Churchill, during his World war days, used to mark all the instructions he issued with the handwritten caption..
"ACTION THIS DAY "

"Belief".. the word is noble..

"Belief".. the word is noble..
it should not be mixed with sycophancy and opportunism....
the Blessed Lord Himself declared that even though He was the Supreme Being not bound by duties, He was performing the duties as a human being when He is so incarnate..
He makes it clear in Gita
Na me partha asti karthavyam thrishu lokeshu kinchana na avaaptam avaaptavyam varta eva hi karmani....
The God Himself sets such an example about work ethics..
So if belief in God would mean crass escapism, God is not likely to help...
We should turn to God when our resources have dried up and our ingenuity and dexterity will no longer carry the day for us..
And in most texts we can read one underlying principle running like a golden thread...
God is on the side of the right and He does not subscribe to the view that anything can be made right by praising God or just recruiting Him as a partner to that action..
At least this is the concept of God we can find in the majority of Scriptures of any religion worth its name..
And definitely it is foolish for anyone to switch over religions, just to get favours from God of another religion, mostly lured by glib purveyors of faith..
Because we will find the same God on the other side of the fence too...

death does not dare....

If one has read a little of Baghavat gita
if one has drunk a drop of the holy waters of Ganga
if one has offered worship to Krishna even once then the God of death Yama will not dare even to think of that man

Three definitions of Yoga are seen in gita.

Three definitions of Yoga are seen in gita.

योगो भवति दुःखहा yoga becomes the remover of sorrows

First complete efficiency in work is Yoga
Second ..Equanimity is yoga

Third Yoga leads to balance and realism in all states of existence..waking dreaming sleeping and turiya stated and therefore is the killer of sorrows.

These three principles should cover all the secular aspects of yoga and gita roo

musings 81

I quoted something from Bagavat Gita and remarked that the quotes form rather the secular content of Gita.
A person asks
"Why quote it as secular.. It is from Bhagavat Gita a HIndu book

My answer is..

Bagavat gita is from an epic Mabhabharatham.. a creation for the whole of the universe and mankind..

Where is it ever said that the itihasam is Hindu..?
Is any particular religion called Hinduism defined in the time of Mahabharatham..

So what is the justification in calling Gita a Hindu book?
In fact, no book has any religion

And I mentioned the three statements on yoga  (समत्वं योग उच्यते, योगः कर्मसु कौशलं, योगी भवति दुःखहा )as secular because they have nothing to do with any religion or worship.. but are mere records of reality..

Let me make it clear..
If you are trying to read my posts always in the light of religion or brahminism, that is not in accordance or in consonance with my beliefs or convictions.

Religion, spiritualism, etc happen .. just to reinforce the moral fabric in a human being
So ideas can be imbibed and quoted from any source including religion..
But that does not necessarily imply that such ideas are the copyright or exclusive property of any particular religion

And genuine secularism is to raise up above blind and unreasonable adherence to an idea merely on the basis of a religion..

The definitions of Yoga in Gita are not definitely religious ..
They are universal.. they transcend religions

If a great idea is found in a religious text and it is praised as shining above religion and therefore it is considered as secular, how can you counter that concept saying that the text from which idea is quoted belongs to a particular religion?

Words, ideas, and books are open for all..
And such words ideas and books which lead to moral elevation are more so.

If anyone sees me in the light of propagator of any blind faith, they are mistaken..
I want to steer clear of such persons..

Faith in god is something which is between me and my god.
.And that is not a subject for social media posts..
