diligent control over anger can maintatin a person in his proper state of strength and prosperity.

बलवानपि कोपजन्मनः

तमसो नाभिभवं रुणद्धि यः |

क्षयपक्ष इवैंदवीः कलाः

सकला हन्ति स शक्तिसंपदः ||

tamaso nābhibhavaṃ ruṇaddhi yaḥ |

kṣayapakṣa ivaiṃdavīḥ kalāḥ

A person may be very strong physically and mentally too. But there is a mass of darkness arsing out of inborn anger in every human being, ever growing slowly and steadily. This source and its product, the extreme anger should be kept in constant control, and every person should be very careful to control than seething anger. If the souce of anger and the anger itself are not watched and controlled all the time, the strength and wealth possessed by a person would just drop away or break away from him and would fall apart similar to the pieces of full moon just getting lost part by part as the waning phase of the moon progresses.

Only very conscious and diligent control over anger can maintatin a person in his proper state of strength and prosperity.

ഒരു വ്യക്തി മാനസികമായും ശാരീരികമായും ഏറെ ശക്തി ഉള്ളവന്‍ ആയിരിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ അയാളുടെ ഉള്ളില്‍ നീറിപ്പുകയുന്ന കോപം മൂലം ഉരുത്തിരിയുന്ന ഒരു എളുപ്പം കണ്ണില്‍പ്പെടാത്ത കറുത്ത വളര്‍ച്ച രൂപം പ്രാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാവും. ഈ യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യം ശരിക്കും മനസ്സിലാക്കി അയാള്‍ കോപം മൂലം ഉള്ളില്‍ കത്തിപ്പടറാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന വിനാശത്തിന്‍റെ തീനാമ്പുകള്‍ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ തന്നെ കെടുത്തി ഇല്ലാതാക്കാന്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ജാഗരൂകനായിരിക്കണം. ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അയാളുടെ ശക്തിയും സമ്പത്തും കുറേശ്ശയായി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് തീരെ ഇല്ലാതാവും. വെളുത്ത വാവിനുശേഷം ചന്ദന്റെ ഓരോ ഭാഗമായി ദിവസം തോറും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു അവസാനം അമാവാസ്യ വരുമ്പോള്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ സ്വയം ഇല്ലാതാവുന്നത് പോലെ. കോപത്തെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ആള്‍ക്ക്, കോപത്തെ നിലയ്ക്ക് നിര്‍ത്താന്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാത്ത ആള്‍ക്ക് എല്ലാം നഷ്ടപ്പെടും . തീര്‍ച്ച.

noble persons are often cruel

इयमुन्नतसत्वशालिनां महतां कोऽपि कठोर चित्तता।

उपकृत्य भवन्ति दूरतः परतः प्रत्युपकार शङ्कया॥

iyamunnatasatvaśālināṁ mahatāṁ ko'pi kaṭhora cittatā|

upakṛtya bhavanti dūrataḥ parataḥ pratyupakāra śaṅkayā||

It is would seem that it is the hard hearted attitude of great person with impeccable integrity that they render great service to one and all but remain anonymous and invisible as if they are afraid that people who have received help from them would insist on returning some favours .

The genuine men of quality would help others without any pomp or show. They would prefer to be anonymous and would never would expect any returns, be it in materials or by way of praise.

Therefore they would withdraw from publicity. The poet speculates that such withdrawal is a sort of hard heartedness of the noble men. It is actually a praise .

उन्नत सत्व शालीनां of people of high integrity महतां noble persons कः अपि which too seems to be कठोर चित्तता hard heartedness इयं this . ते they उपकृत्य after rendering help to others प्रत्युपकार शङ्कया fearing the return of favours and gratitude परतः from others दूरतः भवन्ति remain in distance.

ഇയമുന്നതസത്വശാലിനാം മഹതാം കോഽപി കഠോര ചിത്തതാ।

ഉപകൃത്യ ഭവന്തി ദൂരതഃ പരതഃ പ്രത്യുപകാര ശങ്കയാ॥

അന്തസ്സും ആഭിജാത്യവും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ ക്രൂരന്മാരും ഹൃദയശൂന്യരും ആണെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു.
അവര്‍ മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ട എല്ലാ നന്മകളും സഹായങ്ങളും ചെയ്യുമെങ്കിലും സ്വയം പിന്നണിയില്‍ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു മാറി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്ക് തങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്ത നന്മകള്‍ക്ക് പകരം മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ തിരിച്ചും സഹായം ചെയ്യും എന്ന ഭയവും ആശങ്കയും ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടോ, മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ സഹായമോ അംഗീകാരമോ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച് നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തികള്‍ ചെയ്തതാണ് എന്നുള്ള അര്‍ത്ഥശങ്ക വരുന്നതിനു സാധ്യത ഉള്ളത് കൊണ്ടോ ആയിരിക്കാം അവര്‍ ക്രൂരതയോടെ എന്ന പോലെ പിന്നണിയിലെയ്ക്ക് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു മാറുന്നു.

കവി ക്രൂരത എന്നും വെറുതെ പറയുന്നു എങ്കിലും നല്ലത് ചെയ്തിട്ട് പിന്നണിയില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുക എന്നത് തരമുള്ള വ്യക്തികളുടെ മഹത്വത്തെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

पुरुषस्तावदेवासौ यावन्मानान्न हीयते॥

A person can survive in society and earn great wealth, and retain his good name too only until the moment the people around him respect him and his honour is in tact. Once he loses this honour, he loses everything.

A brave ruler remains calm, cool and composed and also behaves in a benign and soft manner during periods of peace and tranquility.

However when he has to face tough challenges from any quarter, he becomes really tough.

In this matter he sees as his model the great Sun who is very hot and tormenting in certain seasons like summer and is very benign during other seasons.

The softness or toughness of the mind at the right time,should come naturally to the efficient manager.

Generally we have a tendency to build up a certin image, either benign or tough.

In this process people go even out of the way to befriend (or making a show it ) all and the sundry.

This wonderful phenomenon can be seen in politicians especially during campaigns for vote.

When visiting the abodes of prospective voters, they perform all the acts of a clown including lifting naughty children who make it a point to urinate on the white dress of the caricature.

One the hustings are past they simply change their ways.

They are clowns no more, but are tyrants with no heart or qualms

But such play acting is not the topic of discussion in this slokam

The spontaneous behaviour of a great manager is illustrated here.

The manager has to shed softness and get into action however tough it is, when the call of duty beckons.

We see this great quality in the military forces world over.

They dance, sing and feast when the environs are nice but set out to offer the supreme sacrifice when duty calls.

जिगीषवः who are desirous of success ( नृपाः rulers) विजितक्रोधरया the path in which anger is defeated गरीयसीं very thoughtful, heavy अदूषितायतीं path which is blemishless फलनिष्पत्तिं oriented at good results विगणय्य considering पौरुषं path of boldness शिवमौपायिकं strategic and yielding good result नयन्ति lead ॥

This is a very valuable quote from one of the five mahakavyaas of Sankrit, Kiraatarjuneeyam of Bharavi.

The famous storyline for this sublime poetic creation is derived from the Indian Epic Mahabharatham,

While living in exile in forest the Pandavas. the irritating news that even after perpetrating so much injuries through deception and treachery, Duryodhana their enemy and his brothers and living in pomp and power .

Naturally, the younger brothers of the righteous king Yudhistira and the queen Draupadi and not able to conceal their anguish and . and they are raring for revenge.

But the words of wisdom come from the righteous King Dharmaputra.

He says,

Those whose aim in life is to attain success and prosperity,

the prosperity and success which are of ever lasting and strategic value ,

the prosperity and success whose value is perennial,

the prosperity and success which yield only positive benefits in great abundance,

the property and success which are earned through blemishless action

lead their heroic lives setting aside the tendency to act in thoughtless rage because such impulsive action under the influence of rage will destroy whatever advantages they already possess.

How true!

To attain and enjoy Royal eminence are really splendid.

But to fulfill one's aims one has to think well before embarking on acrimonious actions.

The great poet Bharavi is highlighting the importance of the role unblemished good name and respectability and dignity in the life of a man.

He says

can remain in this world as a dignified human being

only till the time his dignity and respectability in the public eyes is in tact.. and he does not fall into disrepute..
