A person who does not or is not capable of  understanding the real worth of a great thing  is always engaged in neglecting it  and  always viewing at it with contempt.. There is no wonder in it
See, the hunter woman, she rejects the pure pearl pouring out of the cranial portion (mastakam) of a bull elephant and enjoys wearing with elan a chain made of mere black beads.

It is believed that pieces of unformed ivory lying in the cranial cavity of a tusker get scattered in the lands of forest when the lion breaks the head of the elephant.  The hunter-woman is in search of tic tacs to adorn herself but the pearls scattered from the head of the elephant does not attract her fancy.  Even if she finds, she throws it away. All that she  would go after is the cheap black beads..  Chanakya has a dig at people going after silly things and in that process rejecting and deriding worthy causes.

we in India have always learned to decry all our old thoughts as conservative, pro-elite, and inflexible.  This edict one from one of the master lawmakers, (I find from my references)
Aapasthamba.

those who have intense yearning and interest in learning should not hesitate to go and learn from a person with knowledge in the field even if he is not of matching caste, status etc.,  the ultimate dharma of life should be begged and acquired even if the source for such knowledge is the lowest born human being if the latter is capable of imparting it. And one should not consider about the bad name or status of the family while accepting a gem-like girl in marriage

What else can you expect from the most mature civilization in this world?  We have heard only about jathibhedam and mathadwesham but ours was always a country without such discrimination as proclaimed by the greatest Narayana guru.  If the evil souls manipulated the noble thoughts and law to suit their ulterior motives it was only the failure of the system.
Not the noble preceptors.
All know the experience of sankara before a chandala  with four dogs who appeared before him in his path and Shankara asked Him to move away from the path because the Chandalas proximity was polluting. Then Chandala asks about who was impure, whether the body of the Chandala or the Atman residing inside him.Shankara is humbled and it so happens that the Chandala was Lord Shankara Himself, and the four dogs he was leading were the four Vedas..

Friends, I would request you to forward this one to every friend of yours who  loves India and I may be given a copy of it.  I am sure such simple bul unadulerated law can arise only in this great sacred land

The shining golden orb of the sun covers or conceals the face of the real truth behind the it,  therefore,  oh lord Pushan,  the sun, remove that orb and reveal to me the eternal truth that is yourself as I am absolutely devoted to you the truth.

I am amazed at the wisdom of the Upanishads. A sloka without compare.
Our children who have gone through study in Kendriya vidyalay would have heard about this.

Another meaning of contemporary relevance in this mundane world (may be never thought of by the masters of the old)....the real truth is often concealed by the orb of gold, that is money power, only if the influence of gold, the influence of physical wealth is removed, we will be able to have an inkling of real truth, which is neither golden nor silver but only absolute without any distortion

my dear friends I am for once stepping into the realms of the loftiest thoughts of our Bharathabhoomi and I fully know that the bashyakaras and oriental and occidental scholars have stood motionless  with baffled minds before these gems. who am I to interpret ? my humble apologies to my elite friends...I have only stated what my limited mind could grasp...the path of Shankara,Ramanjua, Madhwa, or Vyasa is not my route . once again apologies.

One should never jump into action in a haste without proper discrimination.  Lack of forethought is the root cause of grave dangers,  The wealth and welfare are by nature very miserly to visit a person, but they always throng towards the person who always does things after thorough planning and analysis.

There is an interesting story about this sloka and many would have already heard of it. Bharavi, one of the greatest authors was languishing without a sponsor for his kavya  and visited the court of the local king and tried to present this sloka before the royalty.  The king had a cursory hearing of it as he was in a hurry to depart on a hunting spree. The poet, like the usual poor, lingered on. Something happened on that day. The Royal couple had only one boy who had earlier in life been lost to them perhaps in some intrigue. The boy, now a beautiful and ebullient youth,  showed himself at the Palace.  The queen knew no bounds for her happiness.  She started celebrating the gift of this son and after having him bathed, fed, made him sleep in their own royal bed and was watching the youth in affection and admiration while he slept. The king returned after hunt at this juncture and what he saw was shocking..His own wife, sitting in wait for an unknown man in their own royal bed.  His Kshatra blood boiled and he drew out  the sword to do its bounden duty..one male and one female head were about to lose their connections from their torso. somehow the sloka heard by the king in the morning from the poor poet just peeped into his mind from the recesses of memory.  He stopped and tried to enquire before plunging into action.  Meanwhile  the queen was advancing him in a deliriously happy mood shouting in inarticulate words that  their own son whom they had thought as lost for ever, has come back and was sleeping and he should not disturb him.  He heard it and the facts struck him like a sledgehammer.  The king was trying to slaughter his only son, a gift from God and his own beloved queen in a fit of reckless anger.  The next thought was about the indigent poet who had tried to sell the idea of thoughtful action to him in the morning.  He summoned him, honoured him and commissioned the creation of a poem on the same metre.  And thus was born the classic, Kirataarjuneeyam.

The insatiable desire is an unfathomable river. Its water is made of unattainable expectations. Its waves are the uncontrollable avarice. It contains crocodiles in the shape lust and anger. The never ending doubts float along its course as birds. The river uproots self confidence as if they were the trees on its banks .The infatuations are its whirlpools. Its tall banks represent insurmountable anxiety and its depth represents the abyss of despair. However, the greathearted yogis with the absolute control over mind and actions really cross this veritable river and are enjoying on the opposite bank.

the summer rains are playing truant.  the atmospheric temperature is
soaring and cooling mechanisms like ACs etc are becoming ineffective.
In olden days at least in agraharams there was a practice.  If the
rains dont come, people simply carry water from far off ponds or dried
rivers or from whatever source and just make a beeling to the nearest
siva temple, there to pour the precious water with chanting of
sreerudram on the Sivalingam... evidence is that for each drop of
water fallen on the head of Sambhu. the heaven pours in millions of
tonnes of water. Om Namo Bagavathey rudraya.  Let us even at home do
little cooling abhishekam on siva and see...

inherent qualities never give up

the root is inhabited by the most poisonous serpent, the top is occupied by the ugly vicious monkeys, the branches are infested by wild birds, the flowers are always drained by large beetles and thus the sandal tree is always surrounded and under attace by the worst evil elements.  But see, the sandal tree never gives up its natural capacity of bestowing  coolness.  The really noble beings do not give up their natural benevolence even when everything evil is infesting them.

a human being feels highly elated and spiritually close to God at the end of hearing a puranic discourse. After accompanying a dead friend to the burial ground and sseing him off in a blue fume of smoke  he will intensely feel how unreal this life is.  After having a session of copulation with the mate he feel satiated to the extent that  the person will feel a sort of hatred for what he was doing.  The master chanakya points out that if this state of detachment remains with a fellow all the time, who can prevent him from attaining eternal release from the vicissitudes of this mortal life?   The hysteria exhibited by people during purana discourse and the sudden burnout at the end is a quite familiar sight. whe a person dies some friends and family members may wish they had also died along with him.. Keats has expressed well about love's sad satiety. . But think how these thought are so ephemeral?

the following evil predilection of the mind should be rooted out at any cost... desire for someone else's wife. scandalizing others, throwing saracstic insul at others and exhibiting silly and unbecoming character in the presence of the preceptor and respectable persons.

respect given on the approriate locatin

अपेक्ष्यते साधुजेन वैदिकीथशानशूलस्य न यूपसत्क्रिया

apekshyathy sadhujanena vaiddikee smasaana soolasya na yoopa satrkriah
അപേക്ഷ്യതേ സാധുജനേന വൈദികീ ശ്മശാനശൂലസ്യ ന യുപസത്ക്രീയാ
when a great yagna is initiated, aholy trunk\ of  sacred tree is ceremoniously brought into  to the yagnasala and it is planted with all devotion and poojas. However there is a large wooden soola erected in a burial ground where some condemned crimials are forcibly erected to death. Here Kalidasa  says the the sensible men do not perform the sacred pooja to the soola in the burial ground though the same is done ceremoniously to the yoopa in yajna sala.   This means  two things which may  look alike but because of their location and utility they get vastly different treatments.

provocation

the fire flares up when the fuel is stoked up, the serpent spreads his wide hood in an attacking mood when provoked. So it appears that strong people exhibit their prowess only when they are forced into  a frenzy of anger.
(the scene is sakunthalam is quite interesting.  Dushyantha rejects sakunthala in a stupour caused by the curse of sage Durvasas and when he gets back his memory he lives like a tragic lovelorn person. He forget that  there is the kingdom to rule, the dharma to be protected. Meanwhile some demons are attacking Indra the lord of Gods and He requires Dushyantha in full valour to support him in the war.  So Indra sends his own charioteer Mathali to fetch the king. Mathali comes to the Palace invisible and attacks  kings great friend  the vidhooshaka with hard blows and other fearful acts. The king, who is normally inactive in his sorrow and love-pangs  suddenly gets provoked and prepares himself  to attack this unseen entity. At this juncture,  the divine charioteer appears in the open and explains the reason for his torturing of  the vidhooshaka)

apart from the natural father who sired us we have to honour and respect  the person who has constantly fed us, who has always protected us from great fears in childhood, our teacher, and the person who initiated us into the divine path have also  as equal to our father.  (the master chanakya  stresses here the importance of father- like figures in our lives,,,, the ruler, the teacher and the initiator)

ugadi wishes

I wish all my brothers and sisters and friends a Happy Ugadi... let  an new era arise  in all our lives by the grace of Lord Krishna

not by action, nor by having progenies or immense wealth, but only by complete renunciation can we reach eternity

(this is in honour of the great sannyasivarayas who simply give up everything in this life and attain the jeevanmuktha stage and still just grace this earth to bless all of us)
