an angry man cannot enjoy the benefits of the path of dharma

na pūto na tapasvī ca na yajvā na ca dharmabhāk ।
krodhasya yo vaśaṃ gacchettasya lokadvayaṃ na hi ॥
subhāṣitasudhānidhi

If a person has the tendency to fall into the influence of utter rage or anger, he would never become eligible nor would be able to enjoy the benefits and comforts of the two worlds, that is, the present world in which he lives and the world he has to go when he dies. He would not be pure at any time, he would not be a good performer of yajnas and similar activities and he would never have the capacity to observe the virtues of the world nor would he be able to enjoy the benefits of the path of dharma

यः who क्रोधस्य anger, rage वशं influence गच्छेत् go subjects himself तस्य for him लोकद्वयं the two worlds, this world and the world after death न हि never indeed सः he कदा अपि ever न पूतः not pure, न यज्वा not the great performer of yajnas न धर्मभाक् not a partaker in virtuous activities च to भवति become

sorrows and pleasure--both visit us whe expected least

aprārthitāni duḥkhāni yathaivāyanti dehinām|
sukhānyapi tathā manye dainyamat
Another thought worthy of consideration in depth

Just as  sorrows and tribulations visit us, the living beings who possess the mortal bodies, without our request and without any warning, fortunes and comforts also come to us in the same manner.
Nevertheless, we think, and wail about the fall in fortunes but never really think about the blessings that come to us at random.
Yes, our mind seems to be just pleasure loving. In addition when things are comfortable, we presume that such state is permanent, and simply take it for granted.
When there is even some minor deviation from that unstable equilibrium of apparent safety and comfort we start getting nervous.
If we can take fortunes unsolicited, we should take misfortune too that way.
Remember, whether we welcome them or not, fortunes and misfortunes do visit us unexpectedly.

Our culture expects us to treat guest as gods

dūrātatithayo yasya gṛhamāyānti nirvṛtāḥ|
gṛhasthaḥ sa tu vijñeya śeṣāstu gṛharakṣiṇaḥ
subhāṣitasudhānidhi||

Another great couplet, praising the Indian culture where receiving guests is equated with worshipping God, Preceptor and Parents..
Meaning of the Subhashitam
========
We can consider a person as a good householder only if guests happily visit him from near and far and accept his generosity. Others are just watchmen or sentinels for the structure of their houses..
========
Our culture expects us to treat guest as gods- Vedas declare- Atithi Devo Bhava.-
Moreover, we were happy to receive a guest at any time, we never thought of giving or taking appointments.
In addition, Shastras instruct that when we should never ponder over hesitate about, the status, clan or the social standing of a guest while receiving him.
The guest is God, whatever his status is
The word Atithi, implying guest, means one who just visits us without any warning or appointment.
Moreover, to receive and offer all hospitality to such persons was the hallmark of our culture.
Nowadays, people are fussy about proper communication and fixing appointments even for a visit to a close relative or brother, they feel that it is even vulgarity if we show lack of formality in such matters.
The Indian of the yore was not like that.
He loved to receive his friends, brothers and even strangers, and to share with them whatever he had.
They considered it a great virtue to accommodate the guests even by denying or curtailing one’s own comforts. At least it was so in those days.
However, are we like that at present?
I am not confident enough to give yes as an answer.

when you share the grief with a friend..

mitre nivedite duḥkhe duḥkhino jāyate laghu|

bhāraṁ bhāravahasyeva skandhayoḥ parivartate||

subhāṣitasudhānidhiḥ

A great quote from SubhashitasudhAnidhi.. a great compilation of sayings.

----------------------

When one's grief, even though it is very heavy, is presented to a true friend, the heart of the sufferer would become light, and somewhat capable of facing the situation.

See, if one is having a heavy burden on one of his shoulders and walking along, does not he shift the weight to the another shoulder and feel relieved?

-------------------

We human beings are created for company of one another.. Relatives, parents, spouses, all are ultimately useful because they are in essence friends.. A friend is one who is eager to share our woes and comfort us when we are in danger and who would be with us when we are enjoying life and would love to enjoy .

tanmitram aapadi sukhe cha samakriya yat

That is the true friend, whose attitude towards us is the same when we are in danger or when we enjoy comforts..

Indeed, if our difficulties are shared with true friends, we would get great relief.. physically and mentally..

In the slokam quoted, a friend is compared to a shoulder.. when the other shoulder is oneself..

We can share, we can soar and sink with confidence with such friends.

But where do we get such sincere friends.. ?

Are we remaining sincere to our friends?

The answers to the above queries are not at all easy.

Often friendship is for many just a use and throw material..
