श्रीलाभसुभगः सत्यासक्तः स्वर्गापवर्गदः।

जयतात् त्रिजगत्पूज्यः सदाचार इवाच्युतः॥१

क्षेमेन्द्रकविप्रणिते चरुचर्यायाम्॥

This is how the short but sublime work Charucharya of poet Kshemendra starts..

the Opening stanza is an invocatory one.. and starts in the benediction mode..

Here the poet wishes alll the readers that the blessings of Achyutha the Krishna may visit all.

The various adjectives can qualify the two words, Sadaachara or ideal conduct, or Achyta the Krishna..

The word Sadachara can denote krishna too because Krishna is the epitome of ideal conduct

and

ideal conduct Achyuta can denote Sadaachara too because sadaachaara never faces defeat or fall.( Achyuta means a thing with no fall or defeat).

When the sloka is interpreted as praising Achyuta, the meaning is

May Achyutha, who is verily the embodiment of good conduct,

Who is flushed with Grace because he is in the company of Shree the Lakshmi who has voluntarily come to Him.

Who is very much attached to queen Satya or Satyabhaama,

Who is worshipped by all in the three worlds,

Who is capable of granting us Heaven as well as moksha or emancipation,

May the victory be on him..

Which is the subject matter of respect and worship by all in the three worls,

May that Good conduct, be ever successful, be ever victorious..

श्रीलाभसुभगः सत्यासक्तः स्वर्गापवर्गदः।

श्रीलाभसुभगः. very attractive because the goddess of wealth is with him

सत्यासक्तः the one who is verymuch attached to Satyabhaama

स्वर्गापवर्गदः the one who can bless us with heaven and moksham too

त्रिजगत्पूज्यः the one who is respected in all the three worlds

अच्युतः the lord with no failures, Sri krishna

सदाचार इव जयतात् like the good conduct, may be victorious.

श्रीलाभसुभगः. which is the easy path to earn wealth in the proper way

सत्यासक्तः which is closely connected with truth

स्वर्गापवर्गदः which is capable of granting heaven and moksham too

त्रिजगत्पूज्यः which is respected in all the three worls

सदाचार good conduct

अच्युतः इव जयतात् may be victorious just like Lord Achyutha himself..

We are what the company we keep..

कुर्वीत संगतं सद्भिर्नासद्भिर्गुणवर्जितैः।

प्राप राघवसंगत्या प्राज्यं राज्यं विभीषाणः॥१५

क्षेमेन्द्रकविप्रणीते चारुचर्यायाम्॥

Association with mean and characterless fellows who do not have any good qualities should be avoided at any cost.

Vibheeshana gained prominence and became king of Lanka too because he sought the company of Sri Rama, the Raghava.

The storyline cited is too well known..

It is from the epic Ramayanam..

Rama the prince of Ayodhya, along with Sita his wife and Lakshmana, his brother were living in exile in the forest.

The demon king Ravana, from the adjoining island Lanka, abducted Sita through treachery and sleight..

Ravanas intention was to make Sita his own wife even by exerting force.

The courtiers and subjects of Lanka did not raise their voice of dissent against this atrocity..

But Vibheeshana, the brother of Ravana who was living in high royal favour could not reconcile himself to this act of injustice and blasphemy.

He advised his brother Ravana to restore Sita to Rama and prevent disaster for himself and the country..

But the arrogant Ravana would not listen.. Instead, he rose up in uncontrollable rage and tried to finish off Vibheeshana..

Vibheeshana escapeed through the aerial path, and approached Rama who was camping in the seashore in South India ( the present Ramesvaram.. Dhanushkoti)

The prince Rama gave asylum to Vibheeshana. Vibheshana proved to be an able aide and supporter to Rama in his war with Ravana.

And after slaying Ravana and inundating his army, and regaining Sita in all gloroy, Rama assigned the kingdom of Lanka to Vibheeshana.

So Vibheeshana gained name and fame and kingdom too because he left the company of the evil Ravana, although he was his own brother and joined company with the noble prince Rama..

We are what the company we keep..

never manage to achieve favourable results by telling lies or partial lies

न सत्यव्रतभङ्गेन कार्यं धीमान् प्रसाधयेत्।

ददर्श नरकक्लेशं सत्यनाशाद् युधिष्ठिरः॥ १४

The great king Yudhishtira saw the sufferings of hell because his vow of speaking truth ever was broken once ( in the case of Ashvathama.. )

The story is famous in the epic Mahabharatham

The great archer and fighter, Dronacharya was in action in Mahabharatha was.. and he was invincible..

He was annihilating the Pandava forces in hundreds and thousands.

The high command of the Pandava side realized that Drona should be put out of action by hook or crook, if they have to ensure even survival not to talk of victory..

There was actually no one in the Pandava Side who could fight and defeat Drona.

So a plan was hatched to cash in on the sole weakness of Drona.. Drona adored his son Ashvathama more than anything else..

The idea of the Pandavas was that a story that Ashvathama, who was also fighting the battle has been martyred..

And to add authenticity to this news, it was decided that the truthful leader and king of Pandavas, Yudhistire himself should announce the death of Ashvathama..

The king was reluctant..

So, to satisfy his conscience, they named an elephant as Ashvathama and Bheemasena killed the elephat with just one punch..

Then they asked Yudhistira to declare Ashvathaama hataH kunjaraH.. अश्वत्थामा हतः कुञ्जरः meaning Ashvathama is killed.. it is an elephant by name Ashvathama..

But when the king made the announcement, the war music instruments were played blaringly aloud, and the word Kunjara.. the elephant was obliterated in the din..

Drona heard the first part of Yudhistira's announcement and that broke his heart.

He laid down his arms and sat in his chariot in utter grief..

Dhristadyumna, the son of Drupada, the arch enemy of Drona, seized this opportunity, and rushed to the chariot and beheaded and killed Dronacharya.

Technically Dharmaputra did not tell any lie..

But his statement in its partial falsehood has been believed by Drona and that caused the latters loss of life..

So in effect, Dharmaputra had managed to score a victory by telling a lie..

In the swargarohana parva of Mahabharatham, the King and his four brothers and Draupadi are all finally marching towards heaven at the conclusion of their lives mission.

Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, all fall in the way.. And Yudhistira alone trudges on and reaches the gates of Heaven.

His desire is to see his brothers and wife too>

The king is shown the dark hellish place where his brothers and wife have been confined. The place is full of darkness and suffering.. Yudhistira is overcome by grief.( chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of the Swargarohana parvam)

Then he is informed that Yudhistira had committed the sin of breaching a promise in the case of Ashvathama and it was for this sin that he saw this hell

Subequently all were restored to heaven.

Yes, even a minor error by a man of character can have disastrous consequences..

So gaining material benefit by shortcuts is not really prudent or worthwhile...

A persons should start performing chanting of the names or god, offering oblations to fire, or worshipping the god with flowers, or for that matter any good thing shoud first make himself clean and pure by washing his own feet thoroughly..

The deity of disaster and misfotune, Kali entered the Emperor Nala through his feet which were not washed properly .

The story of Emperor Nala is very famous.. He was a great ruler, perfect in all sense.

He was ruling his country well.. But once he played dice with his brother and lost the kingdom as a wager.

it is believed that this king once entered his palace in the dusk after some tour, and he failed to wash his feet before entering..

The time was not good for Nala, and the evil deity of misfortune and suffering, Kali was waiting for him to infest him, but was at a loss to take charge of the king because the king was perfect in all his actions..

Finally when the king forgot to wash his feet, Kali grabbed the opportunity and entered the body of the king

The kings character underwent a sea change..

He started behaving in not so proper ways..

And in a game of chess with his brother, lost the kingdom too and adjourned to forest along with his wife Damayanti..

In the forest, he protected the king of snakes Karkotaka from a wildfire, but in turn was bitten by the snake and lost his personal beauty..

His wife Damayanti was lost too.

The king landed up as a charioteer to Rituparna.. and learned the Aksha Hridaya Vidya and finally kali left him.

After that he regained Damayanti and regained the kingdom too.

The story is long with many episodes, and many versions too

The story is found first in the epic Mahabharatham

Here the most relevant part of the story is that the king Nala allowed his attention slip for some moments, and overlooked the need for personal cleanliness.. and that the results were disastrous..

न कुर्वीत क्रियां काञ्चिदनभ्यर्च्य महेश्वरम्

One should not embark on any task without paying respects and floral worship to Lord Maheshvara, the Shankara..

Sage Shveta engaged himself for even in the worship of Ishana the Shankara and when Yama the god of death came to tie him with his ropes as the Sages life on earth was drawing to a close, he could not do that.. He was prevented by the Lord from dragging the sage to the world of death..

The story of Sage Shveta is given in the Linga Mahapuranam, second Khandam Chapter Eight..

Some sages are assembled with the Grand-sire, Brahmadeva, and in response to their queries , the Lord of Creation Brahma is explaining the greatness of Lord Shiva..

Brahma explains that even if death is ordained by fate, such death cannot overtake a person who is constantly worshiping Lord Shiva.

Brahmadeva tells the story of Sage Shveta..

The Sage Shveta lived in a cave, where he had consecrated and Shivalingam and his sole occupation in life was doing pooja to Shiva and Chanting the lord’s holy name..

The time for death came for the sage too as it happens to all living beings.

The lord of time, the Lord of death, Kaala the Yama, came to the cave and informed sage that it was time for the latters death , and then Yama started tying the sage with his powerful ropes with a view to maim him and drag him to the netherworld..

The sage resisted saying that he was doing pooja to His Lord Manifest in the Shivalingam and that his pooja should not be stopped or interrupted..

He warned Kaala that if he tried to intimidate him, there could be dire consequences.. He pointed out to the Shivalinga and said that the Lord present there was ever eager to protect him..

The Death God laughed at the sage and tried to tighten the ropes, to drag the Sage away..

He further teased the sage by declaring that no God or any other being would come to save him from the strong ropes with which he would tie the poor human being.

When the sage cried out Lord Shankara appeared from the Shivalinga along with Mother Uma the Amabika, Ganesha, and of Course Bhagavan Nandi too.

Seeing the Mahaakaala, Kaalakaala, Lord Shankara, the god of death Yama ran away for his life..

So if we worship Shiva, death can never come anywhere near us..

Harishchadra served as brial ground keeper to uphold solemn promise-- हरिश्चन्द्रो हि धर्मार्थी सेहे चाण्डालदासताम्

न त्यजेत् धर्ममर्यादामपि क्लेशदशां श्रितः।

हरिश्चन्द्रो हि धर्मार्थी सेहे चाण्डालदासताम्॥१३

क्षेमेन्द्रकविप्रणिते चारुचर्यायाम्॥

na tyajet dharmamaryādāmapi kleśadaśāṁ śritaḥ|

hariścandro hi dharmārthī sehe cāṇḍāladāsatām||13

A reallly great instruction from Kshemendra in chaarucharya

One should not give or flout the rules and dictates of dharma or righteousness even if he has been driven to a state of utter penury and physical and mental difficulties and is facing impossible challenges..

Take the case of King Harishchandra.. To maintain dharma, he took up the menial job of assisting a Chandaala in managing a cremation ground.. ( and faced impossible challenges even in that job)

The story of King Harischandra is known to every Indian. He was a very upright person, living the live of absolute honesty, keeping his family and his subjects happy.

But sage Visvamitra got a fanciful idea that it should be proved that the kings uprightness was brittle and would break and crumble if tested under tough situations.

The sage asked for some financial help for conducting a yajna and then managed to drain the coffers of the king by secret manifpulation.. So when the time came the king did not have cash in his treasury to fulfill his promis

Driven to penury, the king gave up the kingdom in favour of the sage Visvamitra and adjourned to the city of Varanasi, with his wife Chandramati and young son Rohita.

Fate played cruel to him even there. Just ot eke out a livelihood, the king had taken the employment as a sevant to a Chandala attending to the cremations of dead bodies in a burial ground.

Chandramathi has simultaneouly taken up the employment as a servant maid in some household..

As luck would have it, a venomous snake bit Rohita while he was playing, and the young prince passed away.. The erstwhile queen took the body of the child for cremation to the burial ground where Harishchandra was working.. The lady did not have any money or moneys worth left with her, and she pleaded to the man, who had changed so much in appearance that his wife could not recognise him, to help her to cremate the body of the boy.. But Harischandra would not agree to allow such cremation unless the fee due to his master, the Chandaala was paid..

Even when the lady was crying and explaining about her abject poverty, the erstwhile king saw the mangalyasootra tied to her neck... The mangalyasootra was costly enough to pay the bill. But then it was again a play of fate.. When Harischandra tied the Mangalyasootra around the neck of Chandramati, there was a divine blessing that only Harishandra would ever see the holy insignia of their marriage..

Chandramathi recognised her husband and Harischandra realised that the dead child was his own son, Prince Rohita.

Still he did not agree to break the rules of his duty.

At this stage, the Divine beings intervened, and the fortunes of Harischandra, and his glory were restored..

(The story is found in many puranas and many texts, and there are ever so many versions.. with minor changes in names of the character, and also in the presentation of the incidents.. But the basic theme is the steadfast adherence of the King to Truth and righteousness.)

Harischandra is a personage that is worth emulating..

We believe that challenges and sufferings visit us to enable us to atone for our bad karmas, and we should face them and negotiate them through the path of righteousness ever.. if we break the rules and deviate from the path of dharma, the burden of bad karma would continue to increase and accumulate, and we would never overcome the evil effects thereof..

ന ത്യജേത് ധര്‍മമര്യാദാമപി ക്ലേശദശാം ശ്രിതഃ।

ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രോ ഹി ധര്‍മാര്‍ഥീ സേഹേ ചാണ്ഡാലദാസതാം॥൧൩

ക്ഷേമേന്ദ്രകവിപ്രണിതേ ചാരുചര്യായാം॥

ചാരുചര്യ എന്ന കൃതിയില്‍ മഹാനായ ക്ഷേമേന്ദ്ര കവി നല്‍കുന്ന ഏറെ കഴമ്പുള്ള ഒരു നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം

അസഹനീയമായ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലെയ്ക്കും ദുരന്തങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കും വലിച്ചെറിയപ്പെട്ടാലും എന്തൊക്ക വെല്ലുവിളി നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നാലും ഒരാള്‍ തനിക്ക് നിശ്ചയിച്ച് വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ധര്‍മ്മത്തിന്‍റെയും സദാചാരത്തിന്‍റെയും വഴിയില്‍ നിന്ന് വ്യതിചലിച്ച് ഒരിക്കലും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കാന്‍ പാടുള്ളതല്ല.

ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്ര ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിയുടെ കാര്യം തന്നെ എടുക്കാം. ധര്‍മ്മം സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ചണ്ടാലന്‍റെ അടിയാളനായി ചുടുകാട് കാവല്‍ നില്‍ക്കുവാനും അവിടെ ജോലി ചെയ്യുവാനും ഉള്ള പ്രവൃത്തി ഏറ്റെടുത്തു.. ആ ജോലിയില്‍ താങ്ങാനാവാത്ത ഏറെ ദുരിതം അനുഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്ര ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിയുടെ കഥ അറിയാത്തവരായി ഭാരതഭൂമിയില്‍ ആരും ഉണ്ടാവുകയില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം ഏറെ സത്യസന്ധതയോടെയും നെറിയോടെയും തന്‍റെ പ്രജകളെയും സ്വന്തം കുടുംബത്തെയും സുഖവും സന്തോഷവും മാത്രം നല്‍കി പരിപാലിച്ചു വന്നു.

പക്ഷെ മഹര്‍ഷിയായ വിശ്വാമിത്രനു ഒരു വിചിത്രമായ തോന്നല്‍ ഉണ്ടായി. അദ്ദേഹം ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍റെ സത്യസന്ധത വെറും കാപട്യം മാത്രമാണെന്നു ധരിച്ചുവശായി. അതിന്‍റെ പൊള്ളത്തരം തെളിയിക്കണം എന്നും മഹര്‍ഷി നിശ്ചയിച്ചുറപ്പിച്ചു. കുറച്ചു പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ നേരിട്ടാല്‍ ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍റെ സത്യസന്ധത തകര്‍ന്നു തരിപ്പണം ആവുമെന്നായിരുന്നു വിശ്വാമിത്രന്‍റെ വിശ്വാസം.

ഒരു യജ്ഞം നടത്തുവാനായി വിശ്വാമിത്രന്‍ ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രനോട് ധനസഹായം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. അതേസമയം കുതന്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ പ്രയോഗിച്ച് മഹര്‍ഷി രാജാവിന്‍റെ ധനസഞ്ചയം മുഴുവന്‍ രാജാവറിയാതെ അടിച്ചുമാറ്റി. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ യാഗത്തിനായി മഹര്‍ഷി പണം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അത് കൊടുക്കാന്‍ ഒട്ടും വയാത്ത അവസ്ഥയില്‍ പെട്ടുപോയി ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍.

പണം ഇല്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥയില്‍ രാജാവ് സ്വന്തം രാജ്യം തന്നെ വിശ്വാമിത്രനു തീറെഴുതി കൊടുത്തിട്ടു ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ രാജ്ഞി ചന്ദ്രമാതിയെയും കുമാരന്‍ രോഹിതനെയും കൂടെ കൂട്ടി അടുത്ത നഗരമായ വാരാണസിയിലേയ്ക്ക്‌ പലായനം ചെയ്തു.

അവിടെ വാരാണസിയിലും വിധി ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രനോട് തന്‍റെ ക്രൂരത തുടര്‍ന്നു. ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി മാത്രം ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ അവിടെ ഒരു ശ്മശാനത്തില്‍ ഒരു ചണ്ടാലന്‍റെ അടിയാളായി ജോലി ചെയ്തുവന്നു. ശവശരീരങ്ങള്‍ ചിതയിലിട്ടു കത്തിക്കുന്ന ജോലിയാണ് അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്.

രാജ്ഞിയായ ചന്ദ്രമതിയും അതേസമയം വാരാണസിയില്‍ ഏതോ ഒരു വീട്ടില്‍ വീട്ടുജോലിക്കാരിയായി ചേര്‍ന്നിരുന്നു.

ഭാഗ്യദോഷം എന്ന് പറയട്ടെ, ഒരു വിഷപ്പാമ്പ് കളിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന രോഹിതകുമാരനെ കടിക്കുകയും കുമാരന്‍ ഉടനെ മരണപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഒരിക്കല്‍ മഹാറാണി ആയിരുന്ന ചന്ദ്രമതി സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞിന്‍റെ മൃതദേഹവും ചുമന്നെടുത്ത് ചുടുകാട്ടില്‍ എത്തുന്നു. അവിടെയാണ് ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ അടിയാളായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കുമാരനെ ദഹിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യമായ പണം ചന്ദ്രമതിയുടെ കൈയില്‍ ഇല്ല. വിധിയുടെ വൈപരീത്യം കാരണം രൂപവും ഭാവവും തീരെ മാറിയ ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രനാണ് ചുടുകാടിന്‍റെ സൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരന്‍ എന്നൊന്നും അറിയാതെ തന്നെ ചന്ദ്രമതി അയാളോട് കാശില്ലെങ്കിലും കുഞ്ഞിനെ ദഹിപ്പിക്കണം എന്ന് യാചിക്കുകയാണ്. പക്ഷെ യജമാനന് കിട്ടേണ്ട പണം കിട്ടിയില്ലെങ്കില്‍ കുഞ്ഞിന്‍റെ ശരീരം ദാഹിപ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ തീര്‍ത്തും വിസമ്മതിക്കുന്നു ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍.

താങ്ങാനാവാത്ത ദാരിദ്ര്യം വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് കേഴുന്നുണ്ട് എങ്കിലും അവരുടെ കഴുത്തില്‍ കിടക്കുന്ന വിലപിടിച്ച മംഗല്യ സൂത്രം ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ കാണുന്നുണ്ട്. അത് വിറ്റാല്‍ ദഹിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള സംഖ്യ എളുപ്പം കിട്ടുമല്ലോ എന്ന് അയാള്‍ അവരോടു ചന്ദ്രമതിയെ ഓര്‍മ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഇവിടെയും വിധിയുടെ വിളയാട്ടമാണ്. പതിവ്രതാ രത്നമായ ചന്ദ്രമതിയുടെ കഴുത്തില്‍ ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ കെട്ടിയ മംഗല്യസൂത്രം അയാള്‍ക്ക് മാത്രമേ കാണുവാന്‍ കഴിയുകയുള്ളൂ എന്ന ദൈവീകമായ വരസിദ്ധി ഉള്ളതാണ്.

അതോടെ ചന്ദ്രമതി ആ ചുടുകാട് സൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരന്‍ ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ തന്നെ ആണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു. രാജാവും മരിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നത് തന്‍റെ ഓമന മകനാണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു.

എന്നിട്ടും ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന്‍ തന്‍റെ ജോലിയുടെ ധര്‍മ്മം തെറ്റിക്കാന്‍ തയാറാവുന്നില്ല.

ഈ അവസരത്തില്‍ ദൈവീക ശക്തികള്‍ ഇടപെടുന്നു. ഹരിശ്ചന്ദ്രന് തനിക്ക് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട കുടുംബവും രാജ്യവും പ്രതാപവും എല്ലാം തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടുന്നു.

നാം ഭാരതീയര്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു, നമുക്ക് സംഭവിക്കുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികളും കഷ്ടങ്ങളും ദുരിതങ്ങളും എല്ലാം നമ്മുടെ പാപ കര്‍മ്മങ്ങളുടെ അനന്തരഫലങ്ങള്‍ ആനെന്നും അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ നേരായ വഴിയിലൂടെ മാത്രം അവയെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുകയും തരണം ചെയ്യുകയും ആണ് നാം ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് എന്നും.

അല്ലാതെ കഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ വന്നു എന്ന കാരണം കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം നേരും നെറിയും കൈവിട്ടു തെറ്റായ വഴിയില്‍ നീങ്ങിയാല്‍ നമ്മുടെ ദുഷ്കര്‍മ്മങ്ങളുടെ ഭാരം വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചു കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും. ദുരിതങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് അപ്പോള്‍ നമുക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും കരകയറാന്‍ പറ്റാതെ വരും.

We should try to develop friendship with good people and seek the company of only those who are really nice.. If we try to seek the company, knowingly or unknowingly, of people who are too selfish, cruel and avaricious to understand what is fairplay and justice, we are inviting danger in capital letters.

The story of the altercation between Vishvamitra and Vasishta is given as an example.

Vishvamitra, the king was on a hunting spree in a forest. He lost his way and finally reached the precincts of the hermitage of Sage Vasishta..

Seein the king and his retinue wandering around the sage invited them to be his guests. The king Vishvamitra enjoyed the hospitality.. He was given all the facilities befitting a Royal personage.. When Vishvamitra asked Vasishta how a poor sage could arrange for such an affluent feast, Vasishta revealed the Surabhi, the divine cow was staying in his hermitage, and it was her bounty that the sage could accord such opulent hospitaity to the king and his men..

Vishvamitra, instead of being thankful, was pervertedly avaricious, and asked the Sage to hand over the cow to the King.. When Vasishta declined, the king used force and captured the divine cow..

So the hospitality accorded to a pervert proved to be hazardous to the host.

The story goes on that Vasishta simply annihilated the forces of Visvamitra through his yogic powers and Visvamitra was beaten left and right..

Yes, the greatest problem with old people is that they have outlived their utility and productivity, but most of them feel young and aggressive in mind.. And they do not want to part with anything they have earned or even hoarded during their active innings of life.. They often forget to realize that a younger and more vigorous set of people are waiting in the queue, anxious to occupy the slots created by the expected departure of the oldies.. A lot of strife and unrest in society arise out of such a situation.. Even strife between parents and their offspring arise out of the tendency of the elderly parents to hold on to whatever they could keep in their clutch..

Better let go.. When the time to depart to the abode of yama comes the oldie cannot take anything with him

The idea of Vanaparsta was an established practice in India.. Great kings, when they realized that their next generation had become good enough to take control of the state and family, would just retire to lives of penance and austeriry..

The fact is , it is better to leave before you are thrown out..

This should be a lesson to the elderly and doddery politicians who just stick on like parasites to their positions, come whatever may..

Vishvamitra who was doing penance with highly pointed concentration landed up with the nymph Menaka tied to his neck..

The story of Visvamitra and Apsaras Menaka is very famous.

The sage Visvamitra was a very intense person.. 

He was a king first and got defeated by sage Vasishta in battle of spiritual power against physical strength

Then he turned into a sage.. who did austerities and penance many times and managed to achieve even the most impossible.. 

But he was very mercurial in his character and many a times he would fritter away his power of penance by applying that power on very silly or frivolous acts or by giving curses in the wrong places..

Finally he set out on a penance to become a Brahmarishi and a very powerful human being.. 

The king of gods, Indra was always jealous of persons who could achieve great things, especially through penance..

He always feared that such persons would pose a challenge to his status as the leader of Gods sooner of later..

So watching Vishvamitra doing penance, the jealous and cunning Indra hatched out plan to stop such great act and he knew that this could nullify the powers of the sage.

So he engaged Menaka, the beautiful dance in the heavenly court to do her amorous tricks before the meditating sage with a view to cause his downfall..

Indeed Menaka tried all her tricks, and initially failed..

But with time, the concentration of Vishvamitra started to veer away from penance to the attractive body of the nymph..

Finally he lost control of all his senses, and received Menaka in his romantic embrace and threw to winds his intense penance..

The damage was done 

This is an instance where the physical senses and emotions could distract the intense self discipline of even the most intense and learned person and could thwart his mission and reduce to naught all that he had accumulated by way of spiritual wealth..

The product of the amorous union of Visvmitra and Menaka was Shakuntala... the immortal Shakuntala of Kalidasa..

The fickleness of human nature is underlined in this sloka.. 

Even the best and earnest people who would be righteous and would yearn to be so for ever can fall to momentary temptations.. and could pay heavily for that.. 

Sounds like a" Me too..."

See what happened to even great kings like Rama, Raghu, Shibi, Paandu.. where have they gone now?

The great personalities cited are indeed of name and fame that would transcend time.. But even such persons could not remain in such exalted status for ever.. All of them disappeared behind the curtain of time..

Rama, the great King, and supposedly the incarnation of Lord Vishnu Himself.. He lived a life of honour, valour, justice and was a role model for everyone of every generation.. But he had to depart .

Raghu, the king and a forefather of Rama and the star of the clan of Raghus won over land, kingdoms, wealth, all over the earth many times over.. Still he too was taken over by the vagaries of time.

Shibi.. the king who was famous for his valour and eagerness to help others even at the cost of his own life.. too gained a lot of fame and virtue during his lifetime, but had to leave for his heavenly abode.. The story where he offered his own flesh to save a helpless dove from the clutches of a vulture is famous..

Pandu.. the king of the Kuru Clan.. whose five great sons made his name immortal.. He too enjoyed life and faced great challenges and had to take leave of his mortal body in unfortunate circumstances.. The king was expected to live the life of a celibate due to the curse of a sage, but in a weak moment, he made overtures to his wife Madri and lost his life in the bargain..

So nothing is permanent.. Neither the present nor the future..

So one has to learn to live happily and with contentment.. and make the best of life as it comes..

Live in the present without much complain

and face future as it comes and tackle it the best way one can..

In this couplet from his celebrated work Charucharya, he say

The king of Gods Indra could throw away the sins incurred by him when he killed the demon Vritra, by taking a ceremonial bath..

The story of killing of Vritrasura by Indra and the latter therefore incurring the sins of Brahmahatya is described in many Puranas and the Itihasas too in different manners..

But the essence of the story is that

Vishvarupa, the son of Twashta, though of the clan of Gods, joined hands with the Asuras (who were his kin through mother) and performed sacrifices that would bring strength to them, and depletion of strength to the Devas led by Indra..

Enraged by this Indra beheaded Visvarupa..

This offended Tvashtaa who did a sacrifice from which the demon Vritra was born..

Vritra was given instruction to kill Indra at any cost, and Indra could not easily face the strength of Vritra in fight..

The only way to defeat and slay Vritra was to use a weapon Vajra or thunderbolt crafted out of the backbone of sage Dadichi..

Sage Dadichi offered his backbone for the sake of the Devas and in that process lost his life too..

Indra created the Vajrayudha from the bone of Dadichi, and killed Vritra..

However, as Vritra was a powerful and righteous brahmin, although a demon, the sin of slaying a brahmin, Brahmahatya, affected the king of Gods.. Indra..

To wriggle himself out of the Sin of Brahmahatya, Indra had a ceremonial bath in the River Sarayu..

This incident is described in chapter 24 of Balakandam of Valmiki Ramayanam.

Sage Visvamitra takes the boys Rama and Lakshmana through a forest inhabited by the demoness Tataka.. |

Asked by Rama, the sage Visvamitra described the story of that forest.

The area covered by the forest, sprawling over the vast area in the confluence of Ganga and Sarayu, was formerly a great janapada or settlement called Angajamala or Malada and Karusha..

The origin of the settlement is described in the following extract from Valmikiraamayanam

पुरा वृत्रवधे राम मलेन समभिप्लुतं।

क्षुधा चैव सहस्राक्षं ब्रह्महत्या यदाऽविशत्। १८

तमिन्द्रं स्नापयन् देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः।

कलशैः स्नापयामासुर्म्मलं चास्य प्रमोचयन्॥१९

इह भूम्यां मलं दत्वा दत्वा कारूशमेव च।

शरीरजं महेन्द्रस्य ततो हर्षं प्रपेदिरे॥२०

निर्मलो निष्करूशश्च शुचिरिन्द्रो तदाऽभव्त्।

ददौ देशस्य सुप्रीतो वरं प्रभुरनुत्तमम्॥२१

इमौ जनपदौ स्फीतौ ख्यातिं लोके गमिष्यतः।

मदलाश्च करूशाश्च ममांगमलधारिनौ॥२२

साधु साध्विति तं देवाः पाकशासनमब्रुवन्।

देशस्य पूजां तां दृष्ट्वा कृतां शक्रेण् धीमता२३

Visvamitra tells Rama

Rama, In ancient times Indra was afflicted by sins and great hunger as retribution incurred for slaying of the demon Vritra.. The evil brahmahatya too took possession of him.|

To save Indra, the devas and the rishis whose wealth was penance in abundance, with pitchers of water ( from the River Sarayu).. And such ablution and bath relieved Indra of all the dirt and sins that covered him.

The sins, dirt and hunger, thus washed off were left on this landscape ( in the banks of Sarayu ) and when the bodily afflictions were thus removed, Indra became happy once again.

The pleased Indra who had become relieved of dirt and hunger, granted great boons to the land which took over his sins.

He blessed that these two Janapadas, Malada and Karusha who received the dirt and hunger on behalf of me, would become fertile and famous for ever..

The gods praised and expressed their approval for the action of Indra in offering respects and praising the two Janapadas. Malada and Karusha

The story of Vritra in incidental.. But the important point to note is that physical purity could be attained through regular baths..

ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍ നല്ല കര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തും കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളില്‍ സ്നാനം ചെയ്തും സ്വയം പരിശുദ്ധിയുള്ള ശരീരവുമായി മുന്നോട്ടുപോകണം എന്ന ആശയം അടിവരയിട്ടു പറയുകയാണ്‌ പ്രസിദ്ധ കൃതിയായ ചാരുചര്യയില്‍ ക്ഷേമേന്ദ്ര കവി.

മുകളില്‍ കൊടുത്ത ശ്ലോകത്തിന്‍റെ അര്‍ത്ഥം

ഒരു വ്യക്തി എല്ലായിപ്പോഴും സ്വന്തം ശരീരം കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളില്‍ ഉള്ള സ്നാനം കൊണ്ടും, പുണ്യകര്‍മ്മങ്ങള്‍ തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടും സ്വന്തം ശരീരത്തെ പരിശുദ്ധമായി സൂക്ഷിക്കണം.

ദേവന്മാരുടെ രാജാവായ ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ വൃത്രാസുരനെ നിഗ്രഹിച്ചതില്‍ നിന്നുണ്ടായ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാപാപത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് സ്വയം രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത് ഒരു മഹാ തീര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ സ്നാനം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടാണ്.

ദേവേന്ദ്രന്‍ വൃത്രാസുരനെ നിഗ്രഹിച്ചതും അതുമൂലം അയാള്‍ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാപാപത്തിനു ഇരയായതും ഒത്തിരി പുരാണങ്ങളിലും ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളിലും എല്ലാം വിശദമായി വിവരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ സംഭവത്തിന്‍റെ വിവരണങ്ങളില്‍ ചില പുരാണങ്ങളില്‍ അല്പം വ്യത്യാസം കണ്ടു എന്നും വരാം.

ഏറെക്കുറെ താഴെ പറയുന്ന പ്രകാരമാണ് സംഭവം നടന്നത്.

ത്വഷ്ടാ എന്ന മഹര്‍ഷിയുടെ മകനാണ് വിശ്വരൂപന്‍ . പിതാവിന്‍റെ വഴിയില്‍ ദേവന്മാരുടെ വംശത്തില്‍ പിറന്നു എങ്കിലും വിശ്വരൂപന്‍ അമ്മ വഴി അസുരന്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. അയാള്‍ അസുരന്മാരുമായി ഒത്തുചേര്‍ന്നു അവര്‍ക്ക് വിജയവും ശക്തിയും ലഭിക്കാനും ഇന്ദ്രന്‍റെ ശക്തി ക്ഷയിക്കാനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ഒത്തിരി യാഗങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി. ഇതില്‍ കോപിച്ച ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ വിശ്വരൂപനെ കഴുത്തരുത്ത് കൊന്നു.

മകന്‍റെ കൊലപാതകത്തില്‍ കലിപൂണ്ട ത്വഷ്ടാവ് ഇന്ദ്രന്‍റെ നാശത്തിനായ ഒരു യാഗം നടത്തി. യാഗാഗ്നിയില്‍ നിന്ന് അതിശക്തനായ വൃത്രാസുരന്‍ ഉത്ഭവിച്ചു. ത്വഷ്ടാവ് ആ ഇന്ദ്രനെ ഏതു വിധത്തിലായാലും സംഹരിക്കാന്‍ വൃത്രനോടു ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു.

വൃത്രന്‍റെ ശക്തിയെ എതിര്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഇന്ദ്രന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. വൃത്രനെ വകവരുത്താന്‍ ഒരേ ഒരു മാര്‍ഗ്ഗം ദധീചി എന്ന മഹര്‍ഷിയുടെ നട്ടെല്ലില്‍ നിന്നും നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച വജ്രായുധം പ്രയോഗിക്കുക എന്നത് മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. ദേവന്മാരുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി ദധീചിമഹര്‍ഷി സ്വന്തം നട്ടെല്ല് ദേവന്മാര്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കി സ്വയം മരണം വരിച്ചു. ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ ദാധീചിയുടെ നട്ടെല്ല് ഉപയോഗിച്ച വജ്രായുധം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചു. അത് പ്രയോഗിച്ചു വൃത്രനെ നിഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

പക്ഷെ അസുരനാണെങ്കിലും വൃത്രന്‍ ഏറെ ശക്തനും നീതമാനും ആയ ഒരു ബ്രാഹമണന്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ വൃത്രനെ കൊന്ന ഇന്ദ്രനെ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാപാപം പിടികൂടി.

ആ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാപാപത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടുവാന്‍ ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ സരയൂ നദിയില്‍ വിസ്തരിച്ചു സ്നാനം ചെയ്തു.

ഇതാണ് ഈ ശ്ലോകത്തിലെ പ്രതിപാദ്യ വിഷയം.

വാല്മീകി രാമായണം ബാലകാണ്ഡം അദ്ധ്യായം ൨൪ ല്‍ ഈ സംഭവം വിശദമായി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

യാഗസംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി രാമനെയും ലക്ഷ്മണനെയും കൂട്ടി വിശ്വാമിത്ര മഹര്‍ഷി കാട്ടിലൂടെ നടന്നു നീങ്ങുകയാണ്. അവര്‍ ക്രൂര രാക്ഷസി ആയ താടക വസിക്കുന്ന വനപ്രദേശത്തിനു സമീപം എത്തി.

രാമന്‍ ആ വനത്തിന്‍റെ ചരിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് മഹര്‍ഷിയോട് ചോദിച്ചതിനു അദ്ദേഹം നല്‍കുന്ന മറുപടിയിലൂടെ ഈ ചരിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ താളുകള്‍ വിടരുന്നു.

ഏറെ വിസ്തൃതി ഉള്ളതും ഗംഗയുടെയും സരയുവിന്‍റെയും സംഗമദേശവും ആ രണ്ടു നദികള്‍ ഏറെ ദൂരം ഒഴുകിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സമതലവും ആയ ഇപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ കാണുന്ന കൊടും വനം ഒരുകാലത്ത് ഒരു മഹത്തായ ജനപദം ആയിരുന്നും. ആ പ്രദേശത്തിന്‍റെ നാമം അംഗജമലം അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ മലദവും കരുഷവും എന്നായിരുന്നു.

പുരാ വൃത്രവധേ രാമ മലേന സമഭിപ്ലുതം।

ക്ഷുധാ ചൈവ സഹസ്രാക്ഷം ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാ യദാഽവിശത്। ൧൮

തമിന്ദ്രം സ്നാപയന്‍ ദേവാ ഋഷയശ്ച തപോധനാഃ।

കലശൈഃ സ്നാപയാമാസുര്‍മ്മലം ചാസ്യ പ്രമോചയന്‍॥൧൯

ഇഹ ഭൂമ്യാം മലം ദത്വാ ദത്വാ കാരൂശമേവ ച।

ശരീരജം മഹേന്ദ്രസ്യ തതോ ഹര്‍ഷം പ്രപേദിരേ॥൨൦

നിര്‍മലോ നിഷ്കരൂശശ്ച ശുചിരിന്ദ്രോ തദാഽഭവത്।

ദദൌ ദേശസ്യ സുപ്രീതോ വരം പ്രഭുരനുത്തമം॥൨൧

ഇമൌ ജനപദൌ സ്ഫീതൌ ഖ്യാതിം ലോകേ ഗമിഷ്യതഃ।

മദലാശ്ച കരൂശാശ്ച മമാംഗമലധാരിണൌ॥൨൨

സാധു സാധ്വിതി തം ദേവാഃ പാകശാസനമബ്രുവന്‍।

ദേശസ്യ പൂജാം താം ദൃഷ്ട്വാ കൃതാം ശക്രേണ ധീമതാ൨൩

ശ്രീമദ്വാല്മീകിരാമായണേ ബാലകാണ്ഡേ സര്‍ഗഃ ൨൪

വിശ്വാമിത്ര മഹര്‍ഷി പറയുന്നു.

അല്ലയോ വത്സനായ രാമ, പണ്ട് വൃത്രന്‍ എന്ന അസുരനെ നിഗ്രഹിച്ചതിന്‍റെ ദൂഷ്യ ഫലമായി ഇന്ദ്രന് ഒരിക്കലും അടങ്ങാത്ത വിശപ്പും പിന്നെ ഒട്ടേറെ പാപങ്ങളും വന്നുചേരുന്നു. ദുഷ്ടയായ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാ പാപവും അവന്‍റെയുള്ളില്‍ കടന്നുകൂടി

ആ അവസ്ഥയില്‍ നിന്നും ഇന്ദ്രനെ രക്ഷിക്കുവാനായി ദേവന്മാരും, ഏറെ തപസ്സ് സ്വന്തം സമ്പത്തായി സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന മഹര്‍ഷിമാരും ചേര്‍ന്ന് സരയൂ നദിയില്‍ നിന്ന് തീര്‍ത്ഥം നിറച്ച ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് കലശങ്ങള്‍ ഏന്തി വന്നു ആ തീര്‍ത്ഥം കൊണ്ട് ഇന്ദ്രനെ അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്തു, സ്നാനം ചെയ്യിപ്പിച്ചു. ആ സ്നാനവും നീരാട്ടും ഇന്ദ്രനെ ബാധിച്ചിരുന്ന പാപത്തെയും കറകളെയും നിശ്ശേഷം കഴുകിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

പാപമുക്തിയും വിശപ്പില്‍ നിന്നും മാലിന്യത്തില്‍ നിന്നുമുള്ള മുക്തിയും നേടി ഏറെ സന്തുഷ്ടനായ ഇന്ദ്രന്‍, തന്‍റെ പാപങ്ങള്‍ സ്വയം സ്വീകരിച്ച് തന്നെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തിനു മഹത്തായ വരങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കി.

തനിക്കു വേണ്ടി മാലിന്യവും വിശപ്പും സ്വയം ഏറ്റെടുത്ത മലദം, കരുഷം എന്ന രണ്ടു ജനപദങ്ങള്‍ എക്കാലവും ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ടവും പ്രസിദ്ധങ്ങളും ആയ പ്രദേശങ്ങളായി നിലനില്‍ക്കും എന്ന് ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

ദേവന്മാര്‍ ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ ജനപടങ്ങലായ മലദത്തെയും കരുഷത്തെയും പുകഴ്ത്തിയതും അവയ്ക്ക് വരം നല്കിയതും എല്ലാം സന്തോഷത്തോടെ അംഗീകരിക്കുകയും പ്രശംസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

( സരയൂ നദിയുടെ തീരത്തുള്ള ഭൂപ്രദേശം -- അത് പിന്നെ താടകാ വനമായി മാറി.. മഹാഭാരതത്തില്‍ അംഗ മലജം എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.)

ഇവിടെ വൃത്രന്‍റെ കഥ സാന്ദര്‍ഭികമായി, ഉദാഹരണമായി ചേര്‍ത്തു എന്നേയുള്ളൂ. ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രധാനമായ സന്ദേശം കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളില്‍ ഉള്ള ദൈനംദിനമായ സ്നാനം ശരീരത്തെ ഏറെ പരിശുദ്ധമാക്കും എന്നതാണ്.
