lifestyle based or truth and dharma can reveal to us the Supreme

tileṣu tailam dadhianīva sarpirāpaḥ srotassvaraṇīṣu cāgniḥ|
evamātmā'atmani gṛhyate'sau satyenainam tapasā yo'nupaśyati||
sarvavyāpinamātmānam kṣīram sarpirivārpitam |
ātmavidyātapomūlam tadbrahmopaniṣat param||
śvetaśvataropaniṣad 1-15 16
a set of mantras from Svetsvataropanishat.. one of the ten promnent upanishats..
Oil is stored in abundance in sesame seeds.
Butter is present aplenty in curd..
Water is stored manifest in torrents in undeground springs..
And fire is dormant in dry logs of Arani wood
Like this the Supreme soul (aatmaa the paramaatma ) is ever present in each individual as aatmaa the jeevaatma...
A seeker who ponders over the Supreme with sincere penance, treading the path of truth and righteousness is sure to realize
that Supreme Brahmam praised by Upanishats, (the scriptures)
that Supreme Brahman who is present concealed everywhere like the butter in the milk,
that Supreme Brahman who is to be perceived by deep knowledge coming through introspection and meditation..
He is the Supreme, so say the Upanishat..
The universal truth that the Supreme can be realized through concerted hard attempts is also a fact underlined here..
The Supreme being is present dormant and concealed in everything.
If we have to have even a little knowledge of Him we have to be disciplined,
dedicated
and persevering..
The oil in the sesame seed gets extracted through heavy pounding. The butter comes out after a lot of churning of the curd.
Fire ( in the form of Potential energy)contained in logs, generates sparks and ignites the logs when two pieces of such logs are rubbed against each other ( generating kinetic energy.)
Same way, we need not seek the Supreme Being anywhere else.. Just dedicated and concentrated meditation and introspection, and a lifestyle based or truth and dharma can reveal to us the Supreme present in us..

a calm and happy mind...source of all that is good.. Maitrayani Upanishad

cittasya hi prasādena hanti karma śubhāśubham|
prasannātmātmani sthitvā sukhamavyayamaśnute||
maitryupaniṣad ( maitrāyanyupaniṣad) 1-6
-------------
A simple and matter of fact statement found in Maitrayanai Upanishad..
This is what all the psyhologists and psychiatrists and lifestyle gurus canvas in so many words
---------------
Meaning
==============
Only through the composure and relatively positive state of the mind can a person handle all actions whether such actions have favourable or unfavourable, positive or negative outcome.
The calm and composed person, concentrating on the positive attitude of the mind would attain everlasting, eternal comfort and happiness.
( Staying positive and steadfast in oneself implies that one invokes the ever positive divinity in mental frame)
===============
A happy and composed mind alone can keep a human being in place..
We suffer from temporary lack of balance too often and face the consequence..
When the balance is lost completely, then we are mad.. That is another thing.
The importance of having a calm mind for a healthy existence is often touted as a recent concept..
But it is nice to find such views in our Upanishads and scriptures penned millenniums ago.
We know yoga philosophy and practice came into vogue just to keep the mind and body healthy,,, and the stress was more on mind than the body.
It is important to note that even when one faces adversities and problems in life the positive texture of the mind should be kept up.. Then alone he can survive such bad patches in life..
---------------
word analysis
Man
चित्तस्य of mine
प्रसादेन composure, positive state
हि only
शुभाशुभं कर्म action with positive and not so positive results
हन्ति face, negotiate successfully
प्रसन्नात्मा नरः man with composed and happy mind
आत्मनि स्थित्वा remaining steadfast in his calm self
अव्ययं सुखं अश्नुते enjoys eternal happiness, lives in eternal comfort.

On Rebirth... a quote from Brihadaaranyaka upanishad..

On Rebirth...
a quote from Brihadaaranyaka upanishad..
tadeṣa śloko bhavati| tadeva saktaḥ sahakarmaṇaiti liṅgaṁ mano yatra niṣaktamasya| prāpyāntaṁ karmaṇastasya

bṛhadāranyakopaniṣat 9 (up|ī|3-4)--35
On the question of rebirth there is a sloka
To whatever object a man's mind is attached, to that goes his inner self with the deed, being attached to it alone.
After exhausting the results of whatever works he had in this world, he comes back from that world to this world for work again.
So much for the man who desires.
But as to the man
who does not desire,
who is without desire,
who is freed from desire,
whose desire is satisfied,
whose desire is for Supreme Self only --
his vital spirit does not depart elsewhere.
Being Brahman he goes to Brahman.
This mantra comes by way of expostulation of the secret of the emancipation from the cycle of births, by Yaajnavalkya to Janaka.
When a man departs from this earth with unfulfilled desires for mundane pleasure, he is led to worlds which are designed to enable him to enjoy or expiate the earthly virtues and sins he has committed in the immediately past chapter of life.
Once the enjoyment or expiation is over, he is born in this earth again to be engaged in Karma (work) the results of which again draws him to the cycle of births and death without stop.
But for a person who has given up all his desires in this world even before death and has become absolutely detached, when he casts off his mortal coils, he is led to the Supreme Self, being part of the Supreme self Himself and he merges with the supreme self.
For him there are no comebacks.
The Supreme soul he is. he remains blissful for ever.
This upanishad vakya finds a shadow in Gita in many occasions..
Yam kim vapi smaran bhavam tyajatyanthe kalebharam....
gita 8-6
Karmanenaiva samsiddhim aasthithah janakaadayah...
gita 3-20 ३.
the idea is spun with a golden thread in gita.
That would require a lot of discussion.
Talking of desire one has to marvel at Yajnavalkya's razor sharp intellect which defines the abandonment of desire so tersely..
man who does not desire,
who is without desire,
who is freed from desire,
whose desire is satisfied, whose desire is for Sureme Self only
(of course by self it is meant here the aatma... jeevatama and paramaatma for those who see them as two or for the advaitin the absolute Supreme soul.
It should not be confused with this mundane body and mind conglomerate,
the gasbag filled with ego, arrogance and self pity)

musings 138 gods always put fetters in the path of persons pursuing higher knowledge

While starting his commentary on taittariya upanishad, as also in some other places Shankara expresses the view that.
His reasoning is that the normal human being who lives on with matter of fact allegiance to rituals and performances are entirely servile to gods more or less like domestic cattle.
Maybe each set of humans flock around some chosen god expecting his sponsorship and protection.
In return the men make offerings like oblations and homams and thus the comfortable existence with adequate supply is ensured for the Gods.
But when people start questioning the basics and pursue and seek truth, they would discover that servility to gods and abject obedience to them could provide only limited returns..
Only Brahma jnaanam which can lead to emancipation and escape from the results of Karmas and attaining Moksham would appeal to a man if he is somewhat learned..
And this realization in turn would cause severe loss to devas or gods because they would lose some of their blind followers just as a farm owner losing his cattle..
And no sensible farm owner, nor any god would be happy about losing their flock .
So they will take all precautions and play every trick to avoid loss of their followers..
And even in spiritual Sadhana, the seeker encounters many impediments..
It would appear that even the supreme brahma is willing to reveal itself only to the best, the most sincere and steadfast among the seekers..

Who Am I?

Who Am I?
After all the purpose of Hindu religion.. the religion when studied at deeper and higher level .. is just a search for answer to this question..
The four mahavakyas,, actually seem to have found an answer to this question.. for those who care to contemplate deep.
1 प्रज्ञानं ब्रह्म prajnaanam brahma from Aithareya Upanishad
2 अयं आत्मा ब्रह्म ayam aatma brahma from Maandukya Upanishad
3. तत् त्वं असि tad tvan asi from Chandogya Upanishad
4. अहं ब्रह्मास्मि aham brahmaasmi from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
the process of cognition of what the individual is as, in connection with, brahma or the Godhead is the first realization
the reiteration that the individual is not differnet from God,, or the Supreme one Brahma. is the second one
The statement by the preceptor to the disciple that You (the disciple himself) are the same (as brahma), you are none other than That (Brahma, that supreme one, is the third reiteration
And the Individual ( the preceptor, seeker, disciple ) realizing and declaring that I am, I am one with, and I am none other than the Supreme one Brahma .. is the final answer to who I am..
Is there any other place to seek the answer for "Who Am I?"

No difference between Shankara and Narayana

No difference between Shankara and Narayana

ye namasyanti govindaṁ te namasyanti śaṅkaram|
ye'rcayanti hariṁ bhaktyā te'rcayanti vṛṣadhvajam|
ye dviṣanti virūpakṣaṁ te dviṣanti janārdanam|
ye rudraṁ nābhijānanti te na jānanti keśavam||

an extract from the Shaiva Upanishat.. Rudrahridayopanishad.. of course it is not a major upanishad.. But the quote is very relevant. especially since even among the staunchest followers of Sanatana Dharma there is a schism about the mutual importance of Vishnu and Shiva

The meaning of the Slokam is

Those who fall at the feet of Govinda.. the Vishnu are also falling at the feet of Shankara the Shiva
Those who worship Hari the Vishnu with flowers are worhshiping Vrishadvaja.. Shiva too
Those who entertain enmity to Viroopaksha the shiva are enemies of Janardhana the Vishnu too.
and
Those who do not understand Rudra the Shiva do not understand Keshava the Vishnu too..

The names of the Lords.. exaplained.. although not exhaustively..

Govinda... the one who protects the cows, the one who protects the earth, the one who is known by all the words..

Shankara the one who provides peace and welfare to all

Hari.. the one who just take away the sorrow of all, the one who manifested as a lion...Narasimha

Vrishadwaja The one who is having a bull in his flag .. as his insignia

Viroopaksha.. The one who has his eyes in disorder.. Shiva who has an eye in the wrong place.. on his forehead.. with fire smouldering on it..

Janardhana The one who removes the sufferings of worldly woes of the people.. the one who inflicts punishment on people who perpetrate evil deeds

Rudra... the one who is angry, and at the same time crying in anguish and sorrow too.. just visualize the Form of the Lord Shiva when he carries the burning body of Dakshayani.. the Sati after she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire of her father Daskha..

Keshava... The one who has long and attractive hair.. the one who killed the demon keshi..

lesson from Kathopanishad

lesson from Kathopanishad
I see the greatest lesson from Kathopanishad..as this .

Those who fear death and bolt and hide and pray and try to cajole destiny to avoid the Yamaraja atop his black buffalo are chased and finished off with clinical precision well in time..

Nachiketa was an exception.. Just because he was offered as a present to Yama by his father in a fit of rage, he pursued Yama to the latter's abode, to find that Yama was on duty elsewhere..

And when Yama realizes when he returns home that he has kept his noble guest waiting for three days, it is the turn of the God of death to atone for the disrespect to the young but bold boy but also to send him back to live a full life..

See the irony.. the bold man with a sense of purpose and dedication could keep even the toughest taskmaster that was Yama on the defensive..

Death runs away from one who has come to offer himself to be taken by it..

Another lesson is that Yama was ready to offer all material wealth and comforts to the boy, but when it came to imparting of the most secretive knowledge about death,

Yama tried to test the boy's mettle to the full by offering all the allurements which would have trapped any normal human being , and the knowledge was imparted only when the student was found to be absolutely free from temptations and completely fit to receive the knowledge..

So at the end of the day, determination, courage and sincerity triumph..

may that shining Almighty (Krishna) brighten our lives.
Wish you all a happy Deepavali.

the supreme being

Without hands or feet he walks and grips, without eyes he sees everything, without ears, he hears everything.
He knows whatever that is to be known  but none knows what He is.
Him we call the almighty primordial god (purusha)

This stanza in upanishad comes from the awe and respect we have for the unknown force whose presence we feel but whom we are not able to measure through our sense organs.

Namaskarams,  I think no one here is actually critical of advaitam per se.   In fact the greatest process of thought that has ever emanated from human intellect is undoubtedly the advaita philosophy.  The anxiety expressed by me was about the inaction amongst the Hindus. It is only advaitam that can unite the Hindu, when the philosophy propounds the existence of only one truth, the petty squabbles on account of caste, creed etc.,  have  to vanish.   If the atheist in Nietsche has to say that if you are not having a god you have to create one, we had to start  moving ahead from gothra cults and multitude of gods and demigods .  Ultimately advaita was the final summit of Indian thought and I doubt whether we can proceed further to anything more sublime.  However,  just as Sankara and Sri Narayana Guru both understood, the votaries of  our religion developed unnecessary prejudices and divided themselves into groups where the sense of belonging to that group was more pronounced than the pride of being a part of Hinduism.  At present  the social inequities have  more or less been ironed out.   Why cant we go on to strive for the benefit of the religion as a whole?  It is a very painful truth that we Hindus have never risen above our group identities.  We will not even hesitate to think of various advaitas like Sankaras advaita,  Chinmayas advaita and Narayana's advaita.   If this delusion does not disappear, we will never make any progress.  The ethos of Hinduism are noble.  I dont believe  elitism of being born in a caste, or even in a religion will make any sense or serve any purpose.   When the very roots of the religion are rotting we should never be complacent professing from pulpits about the greatness of philosophy alone.  Poet Bharatiar could see the blackness of Krishna in the wings of a crow, the green colour of that wayward urchin in all trees and he could even feel the euphoria of embracing the eternal lover when he put his hands onto fire. Sarvam Krishnamayam. That is advaita  But the same person roared like a lion.. If a single individual is not having means to get a single meal we will give him  the entire world...he had the foresight to understand that only individual welfare will lead us to collective happiness.  The hungry stomach carries in it the seed of rebellion and mere philosophy will never quench the fire of protest.  When the proletariat French asked for bread, the arrogant queen quipped that" if they have not bread let them eat cakes"..The result?

even God will not create disorder

Friends, I had an invigorating discussion with a learned person and what transpired from my side, I feel would be enough food for thought for one day.
Hence I am sending this in a different format.

Respected Sir, the matter is rather complicated.
In His exalted wisdom Lord has created so many things and it has evolved under a definite pattern.

And His creation, management or sustenance and destruction, maybe we can all it as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva forms has been going on with absolute precision for eons now.
The entire process has gathered momentum.

Now even the Supreme one cannot stop the process without applying proper brakes and retro power, and if He does it there will be chaos and also miserable destruction without justice.

Of course, if the Lord had deemed it fit not to create all these things even when we are all feeling the existence only under the influence of Maya and there is nothing real about it, maybe even then, the apparent sufferings could have been avoided.

But the greatness of our Lord is that he made the law and he made himself as a follower of the law.. no immunity for himself.

Pehaps the story of the two upanishadic birds have to console us.

dvā suparṇā sayujāḥ sakhāyāḥ samānaṁ vṛkṣam pariṣasvajāte

tayorannyaḥ pippalaṁ svādyatyanaśnannanyo'picākaśīti

mundakopanishat/shvetasvataropanishad.
(this sloka can be found in may other treatises also)

two birds are in the identical tree and there are fruits of varous tastes filling the birds' abode.
One bird is detached.. it simply watches at the world in bliss.

The second cuts its beak on every fruit and according to the taste of the fruit, sweet, sour, bitter etc the bird also has swings of mood.

Why do we try to taste the fruits and invite misery?

In Bible also we can find the story of Adam who tasted the forbidden fruit and became subject to pleasure and pain.
In fact there was a specific order by the God that such fruit should not be tasted.
It is said

sukhasya duḥkhasya na kopi dātā paro dadātīti kubuddireṣā

ahaṁ karomīti vṛthābhimānaḥ svakarmasūtragrathito hi lokaḥ

(अध्यात्मरामायणे from Adhyatmaramayanam)

Pleasure or pain are not provided to us by anyone else, if we think someone else can make us comfortable of otherwise, our intellect is faulted,
and
if we attribute to ourself the authorship of things or doership of actions, it is sheer arrogance...
the world is tied by the strong rope of Karma..

So, to sum up, we can make prayers and entreaties to Krishna if we want, but we are nowhere near suffiecient enlightenment to challenge the rationale behind his acts of commission or omission.

na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṁ naivā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yaṁ agniḥ tameva bhantam anubhānti sarvaṁ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṁ vibhāti upanishad manthra..can be found in quite a number of places
In HIS presence the sun cannot shine, nor the moon nor the stars, no lightning can strike, what can the fire do? All the luminous objects appear to be shining by themselves by just reflecting His eternal lustre,

Here we find the zenith of upanishadic thought..There is a supreme being, call it paramatma or godhead, which in omnipotent. Everything emanates from Him. Without Him no other natural force and its manifestation, its static or evolutionary existence can have any meaning. In astrophysics, we may try to draw semblance of comparison with black holes. In thermodynamics the ideal white body and the perfect black body may try to explain this. The electromagnetic spectral frequencies for the various radiations, light, heat, electricity are all decided by Him.
Living in this small speck of His creation, and still insignificant creature of His we are, we arrogate to ourselves all knowledge, wealth and power. What are we to call ourselves?

On the question of rebirth there is a sloka
To whatever object a man's mind is attached, to that goes his inner self with the deed, being attached to it alone.
After exhausting  the results of whetever works hed in this world, he comes back from that world to this world for work again.
So much for the man who desires.
But as to the man who does not desire, who is without desire, who is freed from desire, whose desire is satisfied, whose desire is for Self only -- his vital spirit does not depart elsewhere. Being brahman  he goes to brahman.

This mantra comes by way of expostulation of the secret of the emancipaton from the cycle of births, by Yaajnavalkya to Janaka.
When a man departs from this earth with unfulfilled desires for mundane pleasure, he is led to worlds which are designed to enable him to enjoy or expiate the earthly virtues and sins he has committed in the immediate chapter of life.
For his there are no comebacks. The Supreme soul he is he remais blissful  for ever.
This upanishad vakya finds a shadow in Gita in many occasion.. Yam kim vapi smaran papam tyajatyanthe kalebharam.... Karmanenaiva samsiddhim aasthithah janakaadayah... the idea is spun with a golden thread in gita.  That would require a lot of discussion.

Talking of desire one has to marvel at Yajnavalkya's razor sharp intellect which defines the abandonment of desire so tersely.. man who does not desire, who is without desire, who is freed from desire, whose desire is satisfied, whose desire is for Self only
(of course by self  it is meant here the aatma... jeevatama and paramaatma for those who see them as two or for the advaitin the absolute Supreme soul.  It should not be confused with this mundane body and mind conglomerate, the gasbag filled with ego, arrogance and self pity)
friends, everyday it cannot be just a subhashitham.. this is one of the cardinal aspect of Indian philosopy.  Janaka and Yajnavalkya...the intellectual giants who could not be surpassed in lofty thought  by any other being ever born

the integrated journey through life

ātmānaṁ rathinam viddhi  śarīraṁ  rathameva ca |

buddhim tu sārathiṁ viddhi manaḥ pragrahameva ca||

indriyānṇi hayānāhu viṣayāṁsteṣu gocarān|

ātmendriyamanoyuktaṁ bhoktetyāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ||

kaṭhopaniṣad  tṛtīyavalliḥ  ślokāḥ 3- 4

The Individual aatma is the owner and rider of the chariot,  The external body with its limbs skin bone and blood is the chariot itself   The intellect is the charioteer and the mind is the rein. The sense organs are the horses, and their paths are the sense objects. The learned call the individual the enjoyer who is integrated in body, the senses and the mind.

Naachiketah, son of Vajasravas, was watching his father performing a sacrifice.  He saw that the father in the course were giving away barren cows as gifts, and was bringing upon himself ignomity and sin.  The young boy was sad and he asked his father as to whom he was going to give his son Nachiketha at a gift. The father was irritated but did not answer the questions the first few times. Finally in sheer anger he shouted that he was giving his son to Yama, the god of death.  Taking his fathers word as a holy command, the child went to the abode of Yama and waited there as Yama had gone out on some duty and came back only three days later.  When the Yama saw a brahmachari  languishing for three days at his doorsteps he was overcome by remorse  and after offering the boy the respects due to him and after hearing his story, offered him three boons. With these boons Nachiketa desired to attain knowledge of the life in the mundane world and the nether world and also the blessings of his father who was angry with him.  The yama dharma while describing the ways of humans and proper conduct imparts this manthra to Nachiketha.

The aatma  or the holder of life cannot be seen in the context of the vedantic jeevatma and paramaatma. Here it is the thing that holds the body and sense alive. In his day to day existence, the individual uses his body as if it is a vehicle. The intellect, the power to see the difference between right and wrong act as the driver, the mind as the reins held by the intellect. The unruly sense organs are the horses and they are raring to charge along the long path ahead and this path is the enjoyment of the sense organs.  It is only the person who has the proper co ordination of the body, sense and the mind can be called a good rider travelling in the right path.

In such a short expostulation the entire purpose of jnana and yoga  are revealed  and such cryptic slokas have been subjected to detailed analysis by Sankara, Ramanuja, Madwa and other great souls.

we owe this much to our elders

On completion of the term of imparting vedic knowledge perfectly the preceptor gives the following advice to his disciple.
 SPEAK THE TRUTH..
Follow the ordained conduct.
Never develop indifference to the reciting and study of the scriptures.
At the time of departure, it is your bounden duty to offer the gift which the preceptor likes most.
Go ahead and marry in the appropriate way so that your family lineage is not broken.
Never fail to pay attention to whatever truth is spoken to you.
Never fail to perform the duty ordained to you.
Never be careless about the things which are proper and good for you.
Never shy away from propagating and teaching what you have learned.
You should never be negligent in offering to the gods and the manes(departed elders in the family line) what is expected of you.
Let your mother be GOD to you.
Let your father be GOD to you.
Let your guru be GOD to you.
Treat your guests as equal to God.
You should only indulge in actions which are irreproachable and have the stamp of approval of scriptures and the laws of society.
Never move away from such proper path.
You must emulate the good practices we (your preceptors) have been following and you should never deviate from the path shown by us (your gurus)

Taittariya upanishad is a supporting text to Krishna yajurvedam.
One would marvel at the clinically precise advise the guru imparts as the guidelines at the time of a person leaves the School.
Can we imagine  any modern house of Knowledge improvising on this?
Please note.    the first and  foremost advise given is to SPEAK THE TRUTH

the face of truth behind the golden facade

hiranmayena paatren satyasyaapihitam mukham

tattwam pooshan apaavrunu satyadharmaays dhrustaye

isavasyopanishat

The shining golden orb of the sun covers or conceals the face of the real truth behind the it,  therefore,  oh lord Pushan,  the sun, remove that orb and reveal to me the eternal truth that is yourself as I am absolutely devoted to you the truth.

I am amazed at the wisdom of the Upanishads. A sloka without compare.
Our children who have gone through study in Kendriya vidyalay would have heard about this.

Another meaning of contemporary relevance in this mundane world (may be never thought of by the masters of the old)....the real truth is often concealed by the orb of gold, that is money power, only if the influence of gold, the influence of physical wealth is removed, we will be able to have an inkling of real truth, which is neither golden nor silver but only absolute without any distortion

my dear friends I am for once stepping into the realms of the loftiest thoughts of our Bharathabhoomi and I fully know that the bashyakaras and oriental and occidental scholars have stood motionless  with baffled minds before these gems. who am I to interpret ? my humble apologies to my elite friends...I have only stated what my limited mind could grasp...the path of Shankara,Ramanjua, Madhwa, or Vyasa is not my route . once again apologies.
