If a person can keep in check his intense anger arising out of the discomfort caused by his enemies through insults or show of arrogance or as a result of facing some defeat at the hands of the adversaries, if a person is devoid of wickedness and if a person is happy about things as they are and is not jealous or intolerant about the achievements of others, then he would be rewarded with the goodwill and the accumulated benefits of good deeds of even his detractors.

Even if I am beaten and physically assaulted on a day to day basis, I shall bear with such torture with patience.
This truthfulness, frankness and forbearance from taking revenge or retaliation, which together can be called patience is praised by the great souls as the ideal guide for good life.

I do agree, such quotes would sound like preaching impractical ideals. But after all remembering such things could, effect some little corrections in our wayward lifestyle

One should never speak words that are so sharp and cutting that it would seem that they pierce the vital organs of the listener
One should never speak words loaded with extreme cruelty
One should not accept the words or take lessons from a person who is fallen with moral turpitude
One should never speak words that would unsettle the listeners, cause shock to the listeners
One should never utter words filled with anger, nor should he utter words that would instigate extreme anger in others.
One should never speak words that would lead either the speaker or the listener to the worlds that are reserved for sinners alone
From Hamasgita in Shantiparavam of Mahabharatham.
Some attribute this to Bhartruhari

If someone is in full rage and is shouting at you in full throttle, never react or shout back. A person who is hurling abuses profusely on a person with calmness and forbearance would be burnt down by the seething rage that caused such action. Moreover, if anything by way of results of good deeds or punyam is available with the one who insulted us, that punyam would get transferred to us along with the unjustified abuses.
From Hamsagita Shantiparvam Mahabharatam
There can be difference of opinion as to whether the punyams of the abuser would be transferred to us if we keep quite. However, no one can object to the idea that it is better not to react to the foul-mouthing of some dirty fellow.

आक्रुश्यमानः when you are shouted at without reason न आक्रोशेत् do not shout back तितिक्षतः of the person who is calm, patience and self controlled आक्रोष्टारं one who shouts at मन्युः एव the anger itself निर्दहति burns down अस्य his सुकृतं good deeds च विन्दति too arise

The benefits of all the good work meticulously performed by a person, all the virtues he has built ups through many pious acts and solemn rituals, the goodwill he has built up through helping fellow human beings through gifts and other assistance, the benefits accruing to him through long periods of intense penance, the glorious outcome of repeated oblations to fire-- If the one who performs all these acts of intense austerities falls prey to intense rage.. all the benefits built up or accumulated would be snatched away by Vaivasvatha, the son of Sun, the God of death
The angry man would be left with exhaustion and disappointment alone.

If a person is slave to anger, all other benefits that accrues to him would be brought to nought. What rage would give us is death alone.

The divine beings are always very affectionate to a person
Who, when either excessive praise and adulation or too much of contempt is hurled on him, does not speak back or retaliate with either too much of endearing or cruel and sharp words,
who, out of his own great strength of mind and character desists from retaliating when assaulted either physically, verbally or emotionally,
Who never wishes damage or destruction even for people who attack him

the person who caused insult, who behaved harshly would surely face ruin

sukhaṁ hyavamataḥ śete sukhaṁ ca pratibuddhyate|
sukhaṁ carati loke'smin avamantā vinaśyati||
manusmṛti haṁsagītā mahābharate ca

Our culture gives the ultimate priority to the dignity of an individual.
To insult a person, whatever may be the reason is considered a sin, a destructive trait..
The following quote from our texts, I could find the same quote in three great texts.. Manusmriti the premier law book of India, the great Indian epic Mahabharatham and in the philosophical text Hamsa Gita too. I am sure we would find the same other texts too.
That idea should be etched in the hearts of one and all.

The sloka says

A person who receives insults would sleep well after some time. In addition, he would wake up comfortably after that sleep too. In due course the slighted person would even go about with his work in the world happily that insult. On the other hand, the person who caused insult, who behaved harshly would surely face ruin

It is something like the wielder of the stick getting the thrashes..
Bad thoughts and feelings for others have the uncanny effieciency to land themselves upon the originator or the source and ruining it..
Sure, if we give empathy, respect, love and care in place of insult, we will get back the very same things, maybe with huge value addition..
