Wherever the praise of that great scion of Raghu clan.. Sri Ramachandra is heard, wherever Rama's story, Ramayanam is recited, in all such places, He presents himself with palms joined together in utter supplication, and eyes overflowing with tears of joy remembering the Mercy of Rama,
to that son of wind God,
to that slayer of all the demons and demonic forces,
to that Anjaneya, the Hanuman,
May all of us pay respects and Pranams

Hanuman is the avatar of lord Shiva..

Someone raises the question as to whether there is any statement in Ramayanam that Hanuman is the avatar of lord Shiva..
I can reply only like this.
------------------------------------
There are varying perceptions on this..
The birth and growth of Hanuman is part of Uttarakandam of Ramayana ..
and some treat Uttarakandam not as part of the mainstream Ramayanam at all
Then the level of Avataram.. it can be full avataram, part avataram, and even lesser avatarams..
Parashurama too is considered a partial avataram of Vishnu.
But he was defeated by Rama who is also a avatar of Vishunu.
In uttarakandam, the role of Bhagavan Shiva in the birth of Anjaneya is clearly stated...
and many believers trust that Anjaneya is the incarnation of Shiva..
And a scene in Sundarakandam where Ravana, is led to ponder whether the monkey Hanuman who was sitting in front of him was Bhagavan Nandi himself..
I answer the question in this perspective ..
But please note..
The puranas and itihasas are so wide they cover vast specte.. having so many versions..
Most of the inferences drawn will be from intelligent deductions from the contents of various texts and versions and also from the commentaries given by scholars and seers who lived over centuries..
If you are trying to argue out a fact in any one manner about the veracity of any of the contents of the ancient puranas and itihasas, you are likely to reach nowhere.. except creating controversies..
I would simply say I trust Hanuman was an incarnation of Lord Shambhu..
Even if I just assert that it is just my faith, I am not wrong in that..
Various scholars on Ramayanam have repeatedly asserted the power of Shiva in Hanuman..
And no one has ever denied that fact.. Is that not good enough?

1 -- I worship the emissary of Srirama (Kaakutsa), Sriman Hanuaman

Who removes all the ill effects of our bad deeds,

who endows us with all that is beneficial to us,

who is having tawny red eyes,

who is the slayer of Akshakumara (the Son of Ravana),

who eagerly participated with success in the search of Mata Sita abducted by Ravana,

who is the foremost among the monkeys,

who is shining forth with the lustre of crores of suns and moons,

who was a terror to the island of Lanka,

who in his mercy, gives everything to us,

who is treated with great respect by his king Sugreeva

and

who is praised by all celestial beings including Indra himself..

2-- May that resplendent, glorious, and valorous Lord Hanuman

who is of great renown, who is the emissary of Sri Rama,

who is the son of the wind God, who is having tawny red eyes,

who sports abundant tuft of hair, who is the remover of all grief of Matha Sita,

who is the vanquisher of the ten headed Ravana,

who gave life once again to Lakshmana (by bringing Mritasanjeevani),

who lifted and carried to Lanka the mountain which contained the herb (mritasanjeevani),

who expertly jumped over the vast expanse of the Southern Salt Sea,

shine forth in my mind and bring success to all my attempts..

3.-- I pay my respects with bowed head to that emissary of Srirama, Lord Hanuman

Who is of very intense and acute intellect,

who equals the wind itself in his speed,

who has complete mastery over his own sense organs,

who is the foremost among the wise,

who is the son of wind god, and

who is the foremost among the militia of monkeys,

4. --If we meditate upon Lord Hanuman

we will attain great intellect, physical strength, great fame, bravery,

वातात्मजं वानरयूथमुख्यं

Pranams to Anjaneyaswamy
He is the Supreme embodiment of power..
Humble obeisance to
His commitment for  His Lord and Master Ramachandra,
His humility,
His razor-sharp intellect,
His dazzling speed and unmatched dexterity and unflinching concentration on the work at hand,
should be great lessons for we human beings,
albeit it is from a monkey..

the prowess of Anjaneya.. the Hanuman..

the prowess of Anjaneya.. the Hanuman..
--------------------------------------------

पर्वतारोहणं चापि सागरस्य च लङ्खनम्।
समुद्रवचनाच्चैव मैनाकस्य च दर्शनम्॥ २८
parvatārohaṇaṁ cāpi sāgarasya ca laṅkhanam|
samudravacanāccaiva mainākasya ca darśanam|| 28
------------
The veteran Boar Jambavan recounts the entire secrets about the birth and life of Hanuman, the son of Wind God and Anjana.. When the great minister of monkeys could recall his real prowess and discover himself afresh, it is almost a second birth for Him.. And that is the start of the most poignant part in the story of Ramayanam.
The reaction of Hanuman on being reminded about his own past is recounted by Sage Valmiki in Kishkindakandam, Sargam 67 of Ramayanam.
The narrative in the words of the Poet himself..
-------------------------------------------------------
After being praised by all his kinsmen, Anjaneyaswamy proceeds to climb the Mahendra Mountain, from where He proposes to jump over the southern sea and reach Lanka, the city of Ravana.

He declares.
I am the son of the Wind God, who is capable of converting even mountains to powder by his own strength and speed.

Being his son possessing my father's own strength, there can be no difficulty for me to travel any distance with speed equal to wind.

I am capable of going round and round even the imposing Meru mountain a thousand times in a single stretch.

Just by the swift movements of my arms I can deluge the entire earth with all its lands, forests and mountains, splashing the waters from the ocean.

When I move my feet and thighs as I move across the sea will get agitated and the huge whales and sharks would be thrown up.

I am capable of flying around the sky covering the whole universe thousands of times, just like the imposing Garuda, the Vainateya.

If I start to jump towards the Sun when he raises, I would be able to fly past him by the time he is to set.

And I am capable to retracing the path from the Sun to the earth also without any rest.

I can fly past all the stars and planets with my prowess. I can dry up the oceans.
I can simply break the surface of earth and split it into many pieces just using my fists.

When I jump over the sky, I would be shaking the mountains on the earth and dragging huge masses of water along with me as I fly.
Dragged by the momentum of my jump the trees and plants bearing fruits and flowers too would get catapulted in the air in the direction of my flight…
and I would look like the bright red Swati Star which has many smaller stars strewn along with in the firmament..

I am going to travel along the skies assuming the huge size comparable to the Meru mountain itself and you the great monkeys, along with all the occupants of the earth and heaven are going to watch my grand flight.

I am going to shatter the clouds in my path, and the mountains would tremble and the seas would dry up.

I am possessing the prowess equal to my own father Vayudeva and the great bird Gauda, the Vainateya..

And except these two great souls no other being will ever be able to match my speed and capacity to cover distances over the air.

Reaching Lanka, I shall carry that Goddess Vaidehi the Sita and bring her to Rama and Laksmana stationed at Rishyamooka mountain, all with a single jump.

When I jump across the sky, my body would assume the same huge size that Lord Vishnu the Vamana, assumed as Thrivirama when he started measuring the universe in response to a boon by Bali.

In my imagination and by instinct, I am very positive and confident that my mission to meet Sita would be accomplished with resounding success.

With a speed equal to Garuda and a power equal to my own father Vayudeva,
I am sure that it would not be difficult for me to cover even tens of thousands of miles of distance in the air and accomplish any act of valour that can be achieved by their combined strength.

I can bring here even the Amritam.. the ambrosia, which is guarded by the celestial Brahmadeva, and the wielder of the Thunderbolt(Vajrayudha), Indra, after capturing the pot of Amrita from them by force, if need arises.

I have the confidence that if need arises, I can simply pluck the lustre of the moon or the imposing energy of the Sun itself and bring it down to you.
And if necessary, I shall just lift the whole island of Lanka with my two hands and bring here the whole island with all its structures and population..

The declaration by Hanuman as above, reveals the true strenght of that Divine monkey.. and that instills confidence and hope among the monkeys.. who were till that time mired in gloom and helplessness.

Why and when did Rama embrace Anjaneyaswamy?

Why and when did Rama embrace Anjaneyaswamy?

A friend raised this query.
I replied with reference to Valmikiramayanam

I am sharing my own reply to the query

"Embracing is a physical contact.
Hanuman has carried Rama and Laksmana on his shoulders many times.

That apart, in Valmiki Ramayanam Yuddha Kandam canto 1 sloka 13 and 14 it is stated that Rama full of gratitude for Anianeya's mission of discovery of sita in lanka ..embraced Hanuman.

This embrace, which is all that I have in my possession to offer at this moment is offered to the lofty souled Hanuman with all my heart and spirit. 13

Saying so Sri Rama whose limbs were in thrill with delight at the thought of such enbrace embraced Hanuman the great soul and the great achiever..who has come back with flying colours successfully completing his mission in Lanka. 14

The glory is that Rama is thrilled with delight when He embraces the heroic emissary..Hanuman the Anjaneyaswamy.

Another instance to establish how supreme the status of Anjaneyaswamy was.
Hanuman is the bright glow of hope and accomplishment even when all circumstances are bleak and morose.

I contemplate upon the pleasant form of the Son of the Wind( AnjaneyaSwamy) who is free from all sensual desires, who is in tears of ecstacy (in contemplation of Rama), who is extemely pure at heart, who is named as the emissary of the consort of Seetha (Rama)
I contemplate on the quintessance of fortune of mother Anjana, whose lotus-like face is of reddish colour resembling the morning Sun, whose side-wise glances are filled with mercy and compassion( for the devotees), whose lore is beautiful and praiseworthy, and pray for long and happy life..
I take refuge in the form of Hanuman, who moves at a speed exceeding the arrows of the enemy of Shambaraasura (Pradhyuma..the Son of Krishna is the famous enemy of Sambara), whose eyes are as wide as the petals of a full-blown lotus, whose neck shapely like a conch, who is as efficient and valourous as the windgod himself, whose lower lip is shining like the flame.
May the glorious form of Hanuman shine in front of me.. He is the remover of the sorrows of Maatha Seetha. He is always engaged in spreading the fame of Sri Rama. He is the destroyer of the pride of the Tenheaded demom Ravana.
I am seeing before me in all His glory the resplendant result of the eternal penance of the Wind God (Hanuman is the result of the penance of His eminent father ), the leader of the huge army of monkeys, who is like the rays of sun causing distress to the lily flower, who is always eager to help devotees in distress.
This is the stotram called the Pancharatnam (five gems) in praise of the glorious son of Windgod(Hanumanji).. those who read this daily will long live on this earth enjoying all that is great and would become an eternal devotee of Sri Rama

We all know Lakshmana as a very important character in Ramayanam.  But usually he is not accorded the place of honour he deserved in the epic for his sheer devotion and the voluntary sacrifice of all that is best in life for the sake of his elder brother who is just two days older than him. Most of the time it would appear that even Rama and Sita were treating him only as a utility man.  In fact, when Maricha appeared before Sita in the disguise of a Golden deer and she prompted Rama to run after the deer and fetch it for her, Rama had asked Lakshmana to ensure the safety of Sita in his absence.  The wily Maricha, when he was ultimately hit by the arrow of Rama in a far off place, shouted out the names of Sita and Lakshmana in the voice of Rama giving a false impression that Rama was in mortal danger.  Lakshmana knew that this was only a bait by the dying demon.  But Sita insisted that Lakshmana should go for the rescue of Rama and when Lakshmana was reluctant to leave sita unguarded, she used the worst language accusing him of having ulterior intentions on her.  Lakshman had to go away and this made the entry of Ravana into the Ashram and abduction of Sita. Maybe, she remembered the ungrateful treatment she meted out to Lakshmana, and therefore when Hanuman reached Lanka in search of he and she was asked to give messages to her Relatives and friends on the Indian Subcontinent, she showers all praise on Lakshman.  It is a fact that Lakshman deserved this and more

"The faithful Lakshmana had voluntarily abandoned all comforts, gems and jewels, affluent life which is not even thinkable for ordinary persons, and company of noble maidens in Ayodhya, and accompanied Rama and Me for a life of complete austerity and physical denial in the forest, that too for fourteen years. This was done by him after convincing his parents. He is the darling child because of whose birth Devi Sumitra attained great fame. He is now wandering in the forest, after giving up all the comforts of Royal life, and his only mission in life is to protect Rama in the forest.  He is a valorous hero with the shoulder s resembling a lion, having long hands and also a mind and character of the highest order, and he is very pleasing person to the eyes. For him Rama is his father and I am his mother. When I was abducted, he was not present in the ashram ( implying that had he been present the dastardly action could have been thwarted and also that She had force him to go away).  Lakshma is considerate and would be of great service to elder people, he carried in him all the marks of prosperity and he is very powerful. However, he is a man of few words, and is softspoken. He is a real Prince of Kshatriya  blood, he is dear to all, he is of sternling character, and he resmbles Dasartha, my father in law very much. I feel Lakshman is even more dearer to Rama than  me his wife. Lakshmana is a hero who will execute whatever directions are given to him apply his ingenuity and would emerge as as achiever at any cost. Rama is forgetting the grief of having lost his father only by being in the company of Lakshmana. Oh Hanuman, please convey my best wishes to him in endearing words. He is soft always, a very clean and efficient person  and is the cynosure of the eyes of Rama.

This was quoted because, most of the other characters except Urmila, Shatrugna, and the two daughter-in-laws of Dasartha apart from sita, who, along with Laksmana, had   all undergone great sacrifices in life during the fourteen years of exile of Rama, and they have not been given sufficient footage in the epic.
