all should possess a common quality--Spotless character

Just like light, be it from sun, moon, fire or any other sources adds value and decoration for days and nights too, a spotless character and behavious of the highest propriety are the decorations for both ladies of class and for sages and saints.

The sources of light are varied during daytime and night. The personalities of chaste ladies and the sages, their activities and conduct in daily life, all these are varied. They have nothing in common with each other. Sages aim at moksham whereas chaste ladies pray for the material welfare and well being of all people around. Still both should possess a common quality. Spotless character.
यथा just like निशानां for nights दिवानां for days च also ज्योतिः light (sun, moon, lamp, fire) विभूषणं ornament, embellishment भवति become तथा in the same manner सतीनां for ladies of high standard यतीनां for saints and sages च to अखण्डितं unbroken, unbreakable, steadfast शीलं character conduct sense of propriety विभूषणं ornament, decoratin मन्यते is considered

pīyūṣaṁ viṣamaṁ samaṁ ca vacanaṁ satyāñcitaṁ vakti yaḥ||
Prakarana Sukha Sindhu (Jaina Literature )

For a person whose words are always truthful, for a person who speaks only true words

Fire and water are the same. The forest and the village land are same. The enemy and the friend are the same. The gods and the menial servants make no difference . The deep jungle and the busy city would be the same. The mountain and the cozy household would mean the same The snake or a flower garland would make no difference. The enemy of the small animals the lion and the deer, both would be same to him. The netherworld below the earth, paataalam, and a hole on the earth both mean the same to him. A sharp arrow or the soft petal of a blue lotus would make little difference. A ferocious hunting leopard and a timid jackal are similar for him.

Poison and nectar or ambrosia both mean the same to him.

This sloka is found in many compilations. It is prominently found in Jain literature too.
The idea is that for a person who is truthful by nature, even the most disagreeable and hostile situations would just become favourable.
Also, the man who is used to tell the truth and truth alone, would speak only truth when he is in the company of the most friendly person as also when he is confronted by the greatest adversities. The most benign and the extremely hostile factors are paired together in this sloka to underline the fact that the person who is wedded to truth would be honest under all circumstances.

Are such ideas relevant in the present world full of artificiality, where truth and fairplay are not major priorities? It is a major question.

यः who सत्याञ्चितं adorned decorated with truth वचनं words वक्ति speaks तस्य for him अग्निः fire जलं च and water अर्णवः sea स्थलं च and land अरिः enemy मित्रं च and friend सुराः gods किङ्कराः च and menial servants कान्तारं fores नगरं च town too गिरिः mountain गृहं च and house अहिः snake माल्यं च and garland made of flower मृगारिः enemy of animals, lion मृगः deer च andपातालं the large world under the earth बिलं च a hole or burrow too अस्त्रं a sharp arrow उत्पलदलं च and the petal of a blue lotus व्यालः hunting leopard, huge wild animal शृगालः jackal च too विषंpoison पीयूषं nectar, ambrosia च too विषमं difficult, embarrassing समं भवतः are equal

good or bad action come back as good or bad results

from Jaina literature

The evidence for the fact that good or bad action formerly perpetrated would in turn come back as good or bad results respectively can be inferred from the following facts.
A person who eats food which may be tasty but dangerous and toxic to the health would meet quick or slow death.
A person who amasses wealth through unfair and unjust means finally faces the destruction of such wealth and would himself perish too.

Our longevity, the money we possess and our state of being young and energetic, all these three appear to be engaged in a state of mutual competition in running away from us leaving us high and dry. This is the fate of all of us living beings.

Yes, we do not have any clue as to when we would take our last breath. The money we have can disappear soon, either spent by us, stolen, looted pilfered or what not. And no amount of make up is going to keep us young for more than a few years. All the three are eager to bid good byes to us. And each departure leave us helpless.

easier to help others with materials than give physical protection

We can find lots and many good people who are ready to help the needy with gifts of cows, gold and even land. However, it is indeed very difficult to find people with strength and willingness to give protections to living beings facing great threats to their lives and existence.

It is easier to help others with materials. However, it takes a lot of strength and character to stand up against adversities and offer protection to people in peril.

If there is no compassion charity would not yield any merit

na sā dīkṣā na sā bhikṣā na taddānaṁ na tattapaḥ|
na tad dhyānaṁ na tadmaunaṁ dayā yatra na vidyate||

If there is no compassion for others in the spirit and conduct of a person
His initiation into spirituality is in vain
His activities in making offerings to exalted souls are in vain
His charitable activities are of no use
His hard penance is of little avail
His tenacity in meditation would not bring much results
His vows is silence and restraint too would not yield desired results

the real happiness has to come from knowledge, contemplation and steadfast penance.

na mṛttikā naiva jalaṁ nāpyagniḥ karmaśodhanaḥ|

It is indeed not mud, nor water, nor fire, not even good deeds that would purify a person and make him perfect… but knowledge , meditation, and wealth of penance would really make one pure and take him to ultimate liberation.

Of course, we use mud, water etc to remove dirt from the body, and heating clears up deeper blemishes and good conduct prepares us in the path of greatness. But the real happiness has to come from knowledge, contemplation and steadfast penance.
This quote comes from Jaina Literature.

A fox, wandering around in the jungle discovered some flesh of a dead animal and was readying to gobble up the sumptuous food. It was in the banks of a stream. Suddenly the fox notices that a fat fish had just jumped out of the water and landed up in the shore. It was struggling to get back to the stream. The avaricious fox wanted to have the fish and ran towards it leaving aside the flesh it was in the process of eating.
By the time the fox approached it the fish had managed to struggle back into the stream and had simply swam away. However, an alertly watching eagle swept on the flesh half eaten by the fox and flew away with it.
The poor fox lost both the flesh and the fish too.

6. SAttaa-- Position of authority.. to attain and maintain such positons one has to be diligent and anxious for ever

A person will not ever reap the benefits of good education, good education which would fetch him great name and fame in this world, the education which will make him honoured by great men,
Unless he is basically enterprising and industrious too
Unless he is prepared to travel far and wide and live in distant lands
Unless he is ever keen to maintain his uprightness and respectability and is ever engaged in activities that would further his high moral status
If he is bitten by the bug of laziness
If he is often given to feeling pulled down or depressed mentally and intellectually
If he is disrespectful to the preceptors and the masters
and
If he is in the habit of harbouring romantic thoughts about the arched eyebrows and comely glances and the beautiful faces of attractive girls
From Utharadhyayan Sutra.. a Jain Scriptural Text

There are many people who have no formal education but are having sufficient knowledge to be termed as scholars. Of course there are well-read scholars too
Similarly there are many blockheads who have no education too and there are others who are educated but are simply stupid.

No one else, except ourselves are, or can act as the cause of either comfort and welfare or sorrow and trouble for ourselves. It is the working of our rotten mind that persuades us to think that someone else is either making us happy or is causing detriment to us
The results of the Karma already perpetrated by us are appearing for us as comfort and discomfort now and we have no chance but to accept that.
Of course, the adverse effects arising out of evil deeds can be mitigated through sever penance.

One must not hesitate to travel and settle in hundreds of towns.
One should venture to see and observe hundreds of avenues for specialized knowledge and ensure to acquire new knowledge wherever and whenever one can
One should choose to serve under many kings, meaning one should travel wide and seek gainful employment under many worthy bosses and enterprenuers
After all, good fortune is waiting for a person who moves on and on and does not stick to some single station.

A really learned person is one whose thoughts, ideas and opinions about matters pertaining to himself and others too are steady and clear. Others showing erudition are mere book-worms

The mind should never stray into misplaced desires and romance towards ladies who belong to or are attached to others
The mind should never have any desire for the wealth and possessions that belong rightfully to others
And
The tongue should never engage itself in speaking scandals about others.

When a fellow lies in the open highway after loading himself with litres of hooch, the stray dogs ensure that they urinate right on his face and the street robbers and pilferers manage to take away his clothes. The drunkard lies unconscious, inebriated and stark naked on the street , his face having ablution of dog-urine
When a fellow gets fully drunk, power of discretion, Self control, Patience, Truthfulness, cleanliness in body and thoughts, Compassion, capacity to control anger, and all such control mechanisms just get burnt off like the wildfire inundating the trees in a forest.
