people do not realize what exactly is good and beneficial for them

व्याघ्रीव तिष्टति जरा परितर्जयन्ती रोगाश्च शत्रव इव प्रहरन्ति देहे।

आयुः परिस्रवति भिन्नघटदिवाम्भः लोकस्तदाप्यहितमाचरतीति चित्रम्॥

वैराग्यशतके॥

vyāghrīva tiṣṭati jarā paritarjayantī rogāśca śatrava iva praharanti dehe|

āyuḥ parisravati bhinnaghaṭadivāmbhaḥ lokastadāpyahitamācaratīti citram||

It is indeed strange and sad but funny, Old age is standing nearby threatening the people just like a female ready to pounce upon its prey, dieseases are striking the body repeatedly and vigorously as if they are our sworn enemies, life span is just running out quickly just like water leaking out of a pitcher which has developed big cracks, still people do not realize what exactly is good and beneficial for them to perform and achieve during the lifetime.. and they just perpetrate evil deeds.

the desire to have worldly pleasures seem to turn younger and younger.

वलिभिर्मुखमाक्रान्तं पलितैरङ्कितं शिरः ।

गात्राणि शिथिलायन्ते तृष्णैका तरुणायते ॥

भर्तृहरि वैराग्यशतके

valibhirmukhamākrāntaṃ palitairaṅkitaṃ śiraḥ ।

gātrāṇi śithilāyante tṛṣṇaikā taruṇāyate ॥6

As old age arrives, the face is filled with wrinkles. The head is adorned with white or grey hair.   The body becomes doddery and the limbs brittle. However, the desire to have worldly pleasures seem to turn younger and younger.

The skin on the face was glowing, the body was very erect and strong and the hair was attractively coloured when one is young.The wrinkle, white hair and the infirmity of the body all happen because there is withering of the strength through passage of time. However, intense desire, a process of the mind, was also inherent within us all along with the physical body. In fact, the desires do not become old and weak with age. They remain the same or even get stronger with advancing age. May be desires are becoming more young and energetic while th body is withering away with advancing age.

मुखं face वलिभिः with wrinkles आक्रान्तं attacked by शिरः head पलितैः greying hair अङ्गितं adorned गात्राणि the body, the structure of the body शिथिलायन्ते become brittle, tend to wither away तृष्णा desire एका alone तरुणायते हि tend to veer towards youthfulness.

വലിഭിര്‍മുഖമാക്രാന്തം പലിതൈരങ്കിതം ശിരഃ ।

ഗാത്രാണി ശിഥിലായന്തേ തൃഷ്ണൈകാ തരുണായതേ ॥

ഭര്‍തൃഹരി വൈരാഗ്യ ശതകം

വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യം വന്നു ചേരുമ്പോള്‍ മുഖം ചുളിവുകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് നിറയും. തലയ്ക്കു മുകളില്‍ നരച്ചു വെളുത്ത മുടികളുടെ സമൃദ്ധമായ വിളവെടുപ്പ് നടത്താം. ശരീരത്തിനു വിറയലും സന്ധികള്‍ക്ക് പൊട്ടലും വരുന്നത് സ്വാഭാവികം. പക്ഷെ ആശയും ആക്രാന്തവും.. ഇവയ്ക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യം ഉണ്ടാവുന്നില്ല.. വയസ്സേറും തോറും ആശയ്ക്ക് ചെറുപ്പം കൂടുന്നു.

തിളങ്ങുന്ന ചുളിവില്ലാത്ത മുഖം, ശക്തിയും പ്രസരിപ്പും ഉള്ള ശരീരം ആകര്‍ഷകമായ നിറത്തിലുള്ള തലമുടി..ഇതെല്ലാം ചെറുപ്പത്തിന്‍റെ മുഖമുദ്രകളാണല്ലോ. പക്ഷെ വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യം കടന്നുവരുമ്പോള്‍ മുഖം ചുളിയുന്നു. ശരീരം ക്ഷീണിക്കുന്നു. തലമുടി നരയ്ക്കുന്നു. കാലത്തിന്റെ മുന്നോട്ടുള്ള പ്രവാഹത്തില്‍ ശാരീരിക പ്രക്രിയകള്‍ ഒരാളെ ഇപ്രകാരമാണ് മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ ആശ, ആഗ്രഹം.. അതുപോലുള്ള മാനസിക പ്രക്രിയകള്‍ക്ക് ശരീരത്തിനു പ്രായമാവുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനനുസരിച്ചുള്ള മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ സംഭവിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഒരുപക്ഷെ വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യത്തിന് പകരം ആശയ്ക്കും ആക്രാന്തത്ത്തിനും ചെറുപ്പം കൂടിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുകയാനെന്നു തോന്നും.
