even the earthworm may spew venom at times

Even the earthworm may spew venom at times

Another story from panchatantram of Vishnusharma

In a kingdom called Vardhamanam, a rich businessman named Danthila lived. Because of his expertise in commerce and also in politics, he was the principal adviser to the ruler of the day. Once he celebrated the marriage of his daughter with all pomp and the VIPs local and abroad, all attended in large numbers. The sweeper in the Royal Palace named Gorambha also attended the marriage. He committed the indiscretion of seating himself among the VIPs and the host was irritated and the menial was ordered to sit elsewhere.
The servant was irritated. It is indeed very difficult for a top bureaucrat to please the boss as well as the subordinates. The insulted Gorambha was biding his time to draw blood.
One early morning, while cleaning the bedroom of the King, quietly, while the Royal incumbent was still asleep, the servant started a soliloquy.
"Danthila the rogue chetty was embracing the queen yesterday, I saw it, I saw it.."
The king woke up and heard this and started questioning the menial repeatedly..
Gorambha was incoherent.. " Your Royal Highness, I was playing dice throughout the night and had some hooch also. I might have blabbered something but I do not remember what I said".
The seeds of suspicion had already been sown. The king brooded over the possibilities in all seriousness . " The minister has free entry to the palace and Gorambha can also go anywhere. It is possible that Gorambha might have watched such a scene. The things that people witness in broad daylight come as flashbacks in their mental screens as if in hallucination when they are in an inebriated condition, and specially when they are deprived of sleep also. And how can one be sure of anything when it is a matter of heart between a man and a woman?"
The king was depressed. From that day onwards his implicit faith in the minister started to wane. A royal edict went round that Dantila need not visit the Royal Palace.
The minister was sad, because he did not know the cause of the Royal displeasure.
He consoled himself, " Some things are basically incompatible.. Play of dice and honesty, patience and snake, philosophy and drunkenness and sustained friendship and the king or the boss. Still I am curious.. I have done nothing against the interests of the boss or his kin."
But as he was standing near the gate of the palace, he overheard Gorambha making sarcastic remarks against him, the erstwhile royal confidant. The minister was sharp enough to divine what has happened and who had carried tales to the King. He thought, " The Royal Servant, even if he is venomous and mean, should be placated." So he invited Gorambha to his place that evening praised him and sought apology for what had happened during the marriage function. Gorambha was wined and dined well and hi hands and bags were filled with costly presents.
It was a very happy Gorambha that had left the chetty’s place that night.
The next day, while cleaning the Royal bedroom in the presence of the sleeping king, the servant talked to himself. " I saw His Majesty eating cucumber while sitting in the toilet, I saw it, I saw it…"
The King heard it and was angry. " What are you raving? I have never done such a thing. Shut up your dirty mouth" Roared the king. Then he thought. The servant was blabbering under the influence of hooch, and sleep deprivation. Then he remembered what the fellow talked about the queen and the minister. He was filled with remorse. He called the minister and praised him and restored to him the royal favour.
The moral is that one has to be always very careful about even the minor satellites near the centre of power.

be near the centre of power

prāyeṇa bhūmipatayaḥ pramadāḥ latāśca
yatpārśato bhavati tatpariveṣṭayanti||36||
viṣṇuśarmaṇaḥ pañcatantre mitrabhedāt||

This is from a narration of a story in Panchatantram in the mitrabhedha section.
Some very important persons always are influenced by the immediate presence, and advise of subordinates in close proximity .. this sort of advice can come from persons among the personal servants of a king or a top bureaucrat, maybe, a household servant or a personal launderer or a barber or a gatekeeper or an arrogant wife or an imbecile progeny. However uneducated and unsuitable they are they  influence him with some remarks or advice.   As a generalization, the poet says, the kings, ladies and the creepers always simply grow their tendrils and climb up the things which are very near them.

The working of kitchen cabinets in the centres of power are landmarks in the history and growth of any civilization.  The great Prince Rama was denied the kingship by Dasartaha sitting in the harem of Kaikeyi, his favourite wife  Duryodhana went by the advice of his maternal uncle and ubiquitous companion Sakuni. These are all stories.  What happened during contemporary landmarks in history  and who wielded the real power are  well known...the coterie or kitchen cabinet.  Many a times the king or boss signs papers presented to him at home virtually ensuring that he is hanging himself and his image and often the kingdom or organisation he heads  is taking an abysmal dip.  Instead of being born as a bureaucrat at middle manager lever, it would be more comfortable if one is born as the pet dog of the top boss.
Strangely enough the middle chap when he climbs up the ladder creates his own coterie and old friends and well-wishers are relegated to the dustbin.

these four can make or mar you

suhṛdi nirantaracitte guṇavati bhṛtye'nuvarttini kalatre|
svāmini sauhṛdayukte nivedya duḥkhaṁ sukhī bhavati||110
viṣṇuśarmaṇaḥ pañcatantre mitrabhede||

If one can explain  about his own woes and sufferings to
 (1) A friend who is always having genuine concern and  undeterred love for the former,
(2) a faithful servant who is of good character
(3) a wife who is understanding and accommodating, and
(4) A boss  who has reasonably good heart filled with sympathy for his subordinates,
the agonies can be mitigated and he can be expected to lead a hassle free life.

Here one has to remember  a selfish friend,  a wayward servant, a wife without any concern for the husband and a callous  boss individually and in combination, could the cause of all agonies one has to face.

Our whole  lifetime is almost fully shared by these four.

A so-called  friend who can double-cross on you at the drop of a hat can seal your fate.
But a faithful friend will espouse your case in any forum and bring you succour.
A good servant is one who would willingly keep aside his selfish interests for the welfare of the master.
But servants who have joined you just to ensure your annihilation are a common sight.
This  also applies to subordinates in the managerial hierarchy.
The one person with whom one has to share his life in all its aspect is his wife.

If the views and attitudes of the wife are at loggerheads with his own peace of mind, it is better that the victim abandons normal life and go to forest to live the life of a mendicant. (Chanakya has said.. "Maatha yasya grihe naasti bhaarya cha priyvaadinii  aranyam tena ganthavyam yadaaranya tato griham...if  one is not having his mother at home and the wife if not favourably disposes, he can shift his residence to forest all alone, since forest would definitely a better abode under the circumstances") .

If one is blessed with a master who is understanding most of the former's problems in life are gone for ever.
But if the boss is a nagging one always holding on to the principle that the role of the  Manager to find fault with the subordinates and  just pass on the bucks to them, the employee's life turns into a veritable hell.
The heat of this inferno ought to have been felt by men in all professions and avocations at some point of time.
