I worship and pray at the lotus feet of Shanmugha, the Skanda. He is the foremost among gods. He took birth in Sharavana. He is the child of Shankara and Uma. He annihilated the demon Shoorapadma with sharp arrows. He is holding the powerful, divine Shakthi in his hand. He is the refuge and solace to all devotees who throng around him. He is happy to bestow welfre on all on a permanent basis. He is glowing forthwith six faces that resemble six full moons

He shines with the glow that would equal hundred suns. He is beyond reach for persons who fritter away their lives craving for worldly desires. He is the eternal source of jubilation for the world of gods and its occupants.

Anathi nithanam Vishnum… अनादि निधनं षड्भाव विकार शून्यम्
There are six aspects present in all living beings, called shad bhavas:
1. Living beings take birth – They are born at some point in time; they come into existence.
2. They exist – They remain over a certain period. A living being is not like a lightning flash; they exist for hours, days, or years.
3. They grow – A baby weighing about 3 kg grows into an adult weighing 20 to 30 times that weight. Plants grow, and animals grow.
4. They transform themselves – A delicate child transforms into an adult with muscles and a moustache. A person can be fat today and slim tomorrow. Living beings are capable of transformation.
5. They decay – With age, beings start decaying. Weight is lost, the body shrinks, wrinkles appear, and skin sags. Decay is the opposite of growth.
6. They die – Finally, they leave the earth.
These are the six bhavas inherent in all living beings.
He, however, is beyond them:
He doesn’t take birth – He is eternal, always existing.
He doesn’t grow – He has encompassed everything. Why would he grow?
He doesn’t exist in a limited sense – His existence is infinite.
We might ask, 'Is your father at home?' This question inherently implies a time frame – now, today, or these days. All are finite and limited. In contrast, he exists beyond such limitations.
He doesn’t transform – Transformation implies being something now and something else later, like a student becoming a teacher. When he himself is both the student and the teacher, there is no transformation.
He doesn’t decay, perish, or diminish.
He doesn’t die.

हराश्लिष्टगात्रम् भजे बालमूर्तिम्

I could not erase this scene just repeatedly running in my mind as if it is a video picture.. and the feeling is simply sweet..
That cute boy is nestling in the lap of his mother..
The best,
the most beautiful
the most affectionate mother anyone could have..
No one knows who is more fortunate,, that boy who has the chance to sit in the lap of that mother..
Or that mother who had this boy playing in her lap..
The question can never be answered
The boy's father,
the best father,
who is the father for everyone and who has no father,
is just calling the boy for an embrace...
And the boy is simply leaping forth to get himself engulfed in a tight embrace of that father..
Here there is no doubt as to who is more fortunate..
It is the boy..
The ultimate purpose in the life of any living being is to just dissolve Himself in that embrace.. the embrace of that father
The mother is Uma the Parvathi
The father is Shankara
and the boy is Skanda..the Karhikeya
This is a scene presented by Aadishankara in his Subramania Bhujanam..
Shankara must have known the embrace Himself.. After all He was both the Aach;arya Shankara and Lord Shankara too..

samutpatya tātam śrayantam kumāram harāśliṣṭagātram bhaje bālamūrtim ||18
subrahmaṇya bhujaṅgāt
I worship that Divine being Kumara, the Skanda, who has assumed the form of a child. While nestling in the lap of His mother Uma, his father Shankara is beckoning him with a lot of love to give an embrace.. And immediately the boy just leaps and reaches the bosom of His father where H e is consigned in a very tight embrace of the one who is the destroyer of all the sins of all beings, the Hara..
What an Imagery... Feel truly blessed
It is the divine presence of Somaaskanda Parameshvara..

The shatterer of Vighnas.. or impeditments..

The shatterer of Vighnas.. or impeditments..
------------------------------------------------------------

The great hymn on Lord Subramania of Tiruchendur, penned by Shankarabagavatpada himself is among the holiest of prayers in the annals of Hindu spirituality..

The hymn is rich in imagery and literary techniques,
and at the same time soaked in deep devotion for Skanda..

It is believed that Shankaracharya was afflicted by a problem in the stomach, and this hymn was composed by Him in praise of Skanda .. to get relief from that malady..
It is believed that Shankara camped at Jayantipuram or Tiruchendur composes the hymn and partook in the holy ashes prasadams distributed in leaves received from the temple and got cured ..
Till date the prasadams and the hymn Subramania Bhujangam are both considered as sacred among the most sacred..

The first sloka in the Bhujangam is a prayer of Lord Ganesha.

sadā bālarūpāpi vighnādrihantrī mahādantivaktrāpi paṅcāsyamānyā|
vidhīndrādimṛgyā gaṇeśābhidhā me vidhattāṁ śriyaṁ kāpi kalyāṇamūrtiḥ||
ācāryaiḥ śaṅkarabhagavatpādaiḥ praṇīte subrahmaṇyabhujaṅge||

Meaning

May that Glorious Divinity which has the name Ganesha bestow on us all wealth and welfare..
That Divine form.. though looking like just a child is capable of shattering huge mountains of difficulties for the devotees.
That Divine form though having the face of a huge elephant is viewed with awe and respect by the natural enemy and adversary, the lion
That Divine form which is sought after with great respect by Lords Brahma and Indra and other deities and gods too.
( Panchasya.. means Shiva.. Himself with the five Heads. Sadyojatham, Vamadevam, Eashaanam, Tatpurusham and Aghoram.. So panchasyamaanya.. could mean the divine form which is given great affection by Lord Shiva Himself.. Ganehse is also the ultimate in Knowledge.. Panchasya is also an epithet for scholars.. so it could mean that Ganesha is respected by all the learned people too..)

the contrast is more important..
He is just a boy, but he will shatter a mountain..
Baala indicates infant.. not grown and stron.. but the mountain is old and sturdy.. and the lord in infant form can shatter the tough mountain
Mahaadanti vaktra means having the face or a big elephant.. And elephant is always an enemy of a lion..
Her panchaasya means a lion.. Even though He is elephant faced, he is respected by a lion.. Panchaasya has the meaning of Shiva also.. so it implies the affection of lord Shiva too .. but that is secondary..
vidhi.. brahmadeva.
Indra lord Indra the king of the gods..
Vidheendraadhimrigyaa.. vidhi indra aadhibhiH mrigyaa.. sought after by the greats like Brahma and Indra..

Ganesha abhidhaa.. having the name of ganesha..
----------------------------------------------
I had already posted on the greatness of the ashes distributed in Tiruchendur.. in panneer leaves..

I am repeating the same.
Skanda Shasti
a very auspicious day for that beautiful and powerful God Subramania or Murugan.. is just two days away
I would love to share a few words on the glory of the Holy ashes adorning that cute warrior..
the words which are endorse by Shankaraacharya Himself
Lord Subramania was born to fight the Cruel Demons Like Soora, Simhavaktra and Thaaraka..
The Lord vanquished Soorapadma on the Skanda Shasti day, and gave Moskhsam to the demon by permitting him to be his mount the peacock and also the insignia in His flagstaff the rooster..
This happened in Lanka and the Lord Murugan (Skanda) stood on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, at Jayanti puram of Tiruchendur.. with his spear of Shakti pressed on the ground and held in one hand and casting a challenging glance westwards to see if anyone was left behind to challenge him in a battle..
With another hand he offered Bilva leaves to his Father, the Supreme Lord Shankara..
The lord Stands there in His most ferocious form -- the Supreme Commander of the Army of Gods just after concluding a victorious campaign ..
No force could dare to stand facing him..
He is also manifest in his six-faced form in Tiruchendur
After the glorious victory he is manifesting himself in all Royal glory..
The Vedas themselves wanted to praise Him and took the shape of a tree with lots of branches full of leaves.. and flowers ( The tree according to the local lore is called Panneer tree) and the Lord is worshiped with these flowers and each leaf represents a great mantra of the Veda, it is believed..
Adi Shankara, was once afflicted by an incurable abdominal ailment.. and all medicines and yogic powers could not give any relief..
So the Saint Visited the Shrine of Skanda at tiruchendur and praised the Lord with a hymn. Subramania Bhujangam.. a beautiful piece of literature in elegant Sanskrit, composed in Bhujanga Metre..
It is believed that Shankara got cured of all His ailments by the mercy of Subrahmnya of Tiruchendur..
The main prasadam at the temple is the holy ashes which bathe the idol of the lord and is distributed in the leaves of the Panneer tree..
The greatness of this ash on the leaf.. "patrabhooti " is underlined at stanza 25 of Subramanian Bhujangam
apasmārakuṣṭhakṣayārśaḥprameha jvaronmādigulmādirogāḥ mahāntaḥ |
piśācāśca sarve bhavatpatrabhūtim vilokya kṣaṇāt tārakāre dravante ||25||
||śrīmad śaṅkarācārya viracitād subrahmaṇyabhujaṅgāt||
Shankara Says,
Oh Slayer of the demon Tharaka, ( Muruga)
on just seeing the holy ashes placed on leaves in your presence, powerful and incurable diseases like epilepsy, leprosy, tuberculosis, piles, diabetes, fever, mental disorders, delusions, and enlargement of spleen just vanish within split seconds, and the demons afflicting people flee for their life..
Notes..
The diseases which are cured by the Lords Holy ashes in the leaf given at Tiruchendur temple
Apasmaara.. epilepsy..
Kushta leprosy
Kshaya Tubeculosis
ArshaH piles
Prameha Diabetes
Jvara..fever unmaadi.. mental disorder, delusion
gulma.. the abdominal disorder.. enlargement of spleen
and if any evil demi gods or demons have afflicted the body of the visitor to the temple, those depart and bolt away on the sight of the holy ashes..

The birth of Skanda

The birth of Skanda

The birth of Skanda or Murugan or Subrahmanian is described briefly in just a chapter in Ramayanam.. as r ecounted by Vishvamitra to Rama in Balakandam

But the episode finds detailed mention in Skanda puranam and Siva puranam..

What must be understood is that the energy of Shiva has been produced (or ejaculated).. and it is the most potent and saturated mass of energy (actually in is the rethas or sperms of Shiva) and Devi Uma Parvathi had not received it in her womb..

Agni was asked to carry it and he was getting burned by the energy of Shiva which he could not bear..
Then agni was directed to deposit the same in the Ganga..

In fact it is said Ganga started to be dried up, but somehow she carried our her mission assisted by some Dharbha or Kusha grasses in a lake called Sharavana.
Skanda took shape as six children and floated in the waters of the divine river.
The Krithika stars, six in number , took charge of Him and nursed Him
Uma saw the children, embraced them all together, and Skanda the Karthikeya became a single child with Six Heads and twelve hands..

Even agni and Ganga just carried and Skanda is named so because he is a clone, an asexual replica of Shiva..

and Uma , Ganga, Krithikas .. are all his foster mothers..

Maybe Shiva, the supreme knew his own replica if it is created would be a real challenge to this Universe.

You know even if the deity may calm down later but the visvarooopa darshanam, the first opening of his eyes would produce energy impossible for the universe to bear.

.The universe is in an equilibrium and a sudden spurt, that is the birth of the Supreme, would add infinitely huge energy to it which neither the nature nor the living beings could bear

You see, there may be upakathas where Shiva is said to have children in Uma... Kirata moorthy, Anjaneya etc. But these are not part of any major Lore.

The real fact appears to be that even Shakthi the Uma is not sure of her capacity to receive the infinite energy of Shiva in His sperm..

Of course, the cooling in Ganga, nursing in the hands of Krithikas and the final embrace of Uma, mellowed down Skanda..

The supreme potency of Shiva is recognized well in tantras.. If a new Shivalinga s consecrated, immediately after the Kalashaabhishekam, a huge mirror is shown to the deity.. so that his sight fall on his own image..

Others cannot stand it.. So He has to see His own image first

Further, a Ganesha is consecrated where the direct gaze Shiva would fall. these may be all just beliefs.. But there can be some sense in it..

The Secret of Pranavam, as per some school of thought is just this.
सुब्रह्मण्य स्वरस्यार्थम् त्वम् च अहम् च सदाशिव ॐ

subrahmaṇya svarasyārtham tvam ca aham ca sadāśiva om

In Skaandapuraanaam , we find that Subramanya the Child explains the meaning of Pranavam or Omkaram to His father Shiva, as an Upadesham, in his father’s right ear.

It is said that the boy was so tiny and Shiva had to carry the child in his arms so that Muruga could reach his fathers ears.. What a teacher! What a studen!

(Skanda was so pure and learned that He could impart knowledge to Shiva Himself.. We have a famous temple built for Skanda with Shankara in the state of Guru and Shisya.. there Skanda is called Swaminaatha.. the master of the Lord of the Universe.. or in Tamil தகப்பன்சாமி in Swamimalai.. Kumbhakonam, Tamilnadu )
What he said is just this.. the meaning of the swaram .. that is the omkaram is just that You (Shiva) and I( subrahmanya) are just one and the same and we are Sadashiva..
SadaaShiva …. The word has innumerable connotations, not capable of discussion..

That one stands gloriously after annihilating all the enemies for the welfare of his devotee through the slightest movement of an eyelash. He is born of the body of the Lord Shiva who made mahameru the becutiful mountain as his bow during the fight against tripura. He is the one from whose holy feet flows the river of compassion. He is the one who is having the most auspicious and attractive form. He is without any destruction. He is the eternal source and subject of affection for that daughter of Himavan, the ambika. He is the one who makes all things sacred. He is the beloved brother of Vigneswara and He is the supreme commander of the Army of Gods and also the beloved husband of Mata Devasena. For the welfare of all I worship that great warrior.
