पुराणेष्वितिहासेषु तथा रामायणादिषु।
वचनं सारभूतं यत् तत् सुभाषितमुच्यते॥
हर्षचरिते
द्राक्षा म्लानमुखी जाता शर्करा चाश्मतां गता ।
सुभाषितरसस्याग्रे सुधा भीता दिवं गता ॥
purāṇeṣvitihāseṣu tathā rāmāyaṇādiṣu|
vacanaṁ sārabhūtaṁ yat tat subhāṣitamucyate||
drākṣā mlānamukhī jātā śarkarā cāśmatāṃ gatā ।
subhāṣitarasasyāgre sudhā bhītā divaṃ gatā ॥
For quite sometime now, I have been culling out couplets and sayings from various literary classics in Sanskrit and presenting them before you. The couplets of this genre are classified as Subhashitams.
Now I present before you two couplets in Sanskrit which give give a definition of sorts for the Subhashitams.
In Harshacharitam of Bhanabhatta it is said
The words or group of words or verses that are found in epics, puranas and itihasas which convey ideas of great substance and utiliy, are termed as subhashitams.
Further there is another slokam extolling the superiority of Subhashitams
In the presence of the worth, validity and the superiority of the essence of subhashitams
The succulent grape fruit has shrunken its face in shame and has become dry fruit with withered appearance
The sharkara or raw sugar extracted from sugarcane has solidified like rock and become cold unable to compete with the taste and shape of the great words.
And lo and behold, even the Ambrosia or nectar, *the life giving potion, has stealthily migrated to heaven, because it is unable to share the platform of greatness with subhashitams.
Grape, Sharkara and Amruta are the best among the best.. But Subhashitam gives more ecstacy than grapes, more sweetness than sugar and has greater life-enriching power than amrutham itself, according the the poetic imagination.
പുരാണേഷ്വിതിഹാസേഷു തഥാ രാമായണാദിഷു।
വചനം സാരഭൂതം യത് തത് സുഭാഷിതമുച്യതേ॥
ഹര്ഷചരിതേ
ദ്രാക്ഷാ മ്ലാനമുഖീ ജാതാ ശര്ക്കരാ ചാശ്മതാം ഗതാ ।
സുഭാഷിതരസസ്യാഗ്രേ സുധാ ഭീതാ ദിവം ഗതാ ॥
ഒട്ടേറെ ദിവസങ്ങളിലൂടെ സംസ്കൃതഭാഷയിലെ ശ്രേഷ്ടതരങ്ങളായ കൃതികളില് നിന്ന് അടര്ത്തിയെടുത്ത ഒട്ടേറെ വചനങ്ങളും ശ്ലോകങ്ങളും ഞാന് താങ്കളുടെ മുന്നില് അര്ത്ഥസഹിതം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഈ സാഹിത്യശ്രേണിയിലെ വചനങ്ങള്ക്ക് സുഭാഷിതങ്ങള് എന്ന നാമമുണ്ട്.
ഇപ്പോള് സുഭാഷിതം എന്ന കാവ്യശാഖയെ വളരെ ലളിതമായി വര്ണ്ണിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു ശ്ലോകങ്ങള് ഇന്നു താങ്കളുമായി പങ്കു വയ്ക്കട്ടേ
ഹര്ഷചരിതത്തില് ബാണഭട്ടന് പറയുന്നു
രാമായണം, പുരാണങ്ങള്, ഇതിഹാസങ്ങള് മറ്റു ഉല്കൃഷ്ടരചനകള് എന്നിവയില് കാണുന്ന വളരെയധികം അര്ത്ഥവ്യാപ്തി ഉള്ളവയും ജീവിതത്തില് അത്യന്തം നന്മ നല്കുന്നവയും ഉപയോഗപ്രദങ്ങളും ആയ വചനങ്ങളെയും ശ്ലോകങ്ങളെയും സുഭാഷിതങ്ങള് എന്ന് വിളിക്കാം.
സുഭാഷിതത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം വിളിച്ചോതുന്ന വേറൊരു ശ്ലോകം..
സുഭാഷിതത്തിന്റെ ഭംഗിയോടും അര്ത്ഥവ്യാപ്തിയോടും സ്വീകാര്യതയോടും പിടിച്ചുനില്ക്കാന് ശക്തി ഇല്ലാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ആയിരിക്കാം
പഴുത്തു തുടുത്ത് സുന്ദരിയായി നിന്നിരുന്ന മുന്തിരിപ്പഴം സ്വയം ഉണങ്ങി ഭംഗിയില്ലാത്ത ശുഷ്കഫലമായി തീര്ന്നത്
ഇതേ കാരണം കൊണ്ട് തന്നെയാവണം കരിമ്പില് നിന്ന് ഊറ്റിയെടുക്കുന്ന മാധുര്യമേറിയ ശര്ക്കര തണുക്കുമ്പോള് കല്ലുപോലെ കട്ടപിടിക്കുന്നത്.
പിന്നെ നിങ്ങള് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ, അമൃതം സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തില് പോയി ഒളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.. അതിനു ഭൂമിയില് വിദ്വാന്മാര്ക്കിടയില് പ്രചാരമുള്ള സുഭാഷിതങ്ങളോടു മത്സരിക്കാന് കഴിയാത്തത് കൊണ്ടല്ലേ ഈ ഒളിച്ചുകളി?
അതേ, സുഭാഷിതങ്ങള് മുന്തിരിയെ തോല്പിക്കുന്ന ലഹരിയും, ശർക്കരയെ തോല്പ്പിക്കുന്ന മാധുര്യവും അമൃതത്തെപ്പോലും കടത്തിവെട്ടുന്ന ഉന്മേഷവും ശക്തിയും നല്കാനുള്ള കഴിവും സ്വയം പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
