प्रभूतवयसः पुंसो धियः पाकः प्रवर्तते

प्रभूतवयसः पुंसो धियः पाकः प्रवर्तते।

जीर्णस्य चन्दनतरोरामोदः उपजायते॥

कुसुमदेवकृते दृष्टान्तशतके॥

prabhūtavayasaḥ puṁso dhiyaḥ pākaḥ pravartate|

jīrṇasya candanatarorāmodaḥ upajāyate||

kusumadevakṛte dṛṣṭāntaśatake||

The mind and thought process of people who have grown substantially in age usually work in a very mature way that would be of great benefit to one and all. See the old dried up sandal log. It gives a lot of happiness and fragrance till the end

Kusumadeva in favour of senior citizens.

enemy within our fold...

स्वजातीयं विना वैरी न जय्यः स्यात्कदाचन। 

विना वज्रमणिं मुक्तामणिर्भेद्यः कथं भवेत्॥११ 

दृष्टान्तशतकं कुसुमदेवस्य 

svajātīyaṁ vinā vairī na jayyaḥ syātkadācana| 

vinā vajramaṇiṁ muktāmaṇirbhedyaḥ kathaṁ bhavet||11 

dṛṣṭāntaśatakaṁ kusumadevasya 

The enemies who can cause real damage to us are the ones who are, or were, close to us and those who are aware of our lifestyle and activities in some detail.. People of our own clan and race could be our worst enemies. 

Kusumadeva in his Dristaantashatakam canvasses this idea in the Subhashita extracted above.

An enemy can never be defeated ever without the active connivance of a person of his own class and clan.. A pearl cannot be broken, cut and shaped without the help of a diamond stone..

We can find such enemies from our own class everywhere.. A Judas, A Vibheeshana and so on..

ദൃഷ്ടാന്തശതകം കുസുമദേവസ്യ 

ഒരു ശത്രുവിനെ അയാളുടെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുവിന്‍റെയോ, കൂട്ടുകാരന്‍റെയോ സഹായവും വഞ്ചനാപരമായ ഇടപെടലും ഇല്ലാതെ തോല്‍പ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ വളരെ പ്രയാസമാണ്. 

ഒരു മുത്തുച്ചിപ്പി മുറിക്കാന്‍ ഒരു വൈരക്കല്ല് ഇല്ലാതെ പറ്റില്ല. 

വന്‍ മരം വെട്ടുന്ന കോടാലി നല്ലവണ്ണം മുറിക്കണമെങ്കില്‍ അതിനു മരം കൊണ്ടുള്ള പിടി തന്നെ വേണമല്ലോ. 

സ്വന്തം തട്ടകത്തിലെ ഒറ്റുകാര്‍ എപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.. വിഭീഷണനും യൂദാസും പിന്നെ എത്രയോ പേരും.. ചരിത്രം തുടരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും

the best alone survive...

उत्तमः क्लेशविक्षोभं क्षमः सोढुं नहीतरः।

मणिरेवे महाशाणघर्षणं न तु मृत्कणः॥१०

दृष्टान्तशतकं कुसुमदेवस्य

uttamaḥ kleśavikṣobhaṁ kṣamaḥ soḍhuṁ nahītaraḥ|

maṇireve mahāśāṇagharṣaṇaṁ na tu mṛtkaṇaḥ||10

dṛṣṭāntaśatakaṁ kusumadevasya

The tenacity and fortitude to take difficult tests and come out successful comes only to people of quality and character.. Others would get pulverised when put to pressure

The couplet from Drishtanthashatakam of Kusumadeva just reveals this.

The best of men are capable of tolerating and even surviving tasks involving excessive dosages of hard work.. Others would not survive such situations.. A gem, when ground on a large touchstone would survive the friction and retain its value and lustre.. However a piece of mud when ground would just drop out as powder.

ഉത്തമഃ ക്ലേശവിക്ഷോഭം ക്ഷമഃ സോഢും നഹീതരഃ

മണിരേവ മഹാ ശാണ ഘര്‍ഷണം ന തു മൃത് കണഃ

ദൃഷ്ടാന്തശതകം കുസുമദേവന്‍ 

അത്യധികം ക്ലേശകരമായ കാര്യങ്ങളെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അവ ചെയ്തു തീര്‍ത്ത് അതിജീവിക്കാന്‍ ഉത്തമഗുണങ്ങളുള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ക്കു മാത്രമേ കഴിയൂ. രത്നം വലിയ ചാണക്കല്ലില്‍ ഉരക്കപ്പെട്ട ശേഷവും അതിന്റെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ തിളക്കവും മൂല്യവും നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്നു. പക്ഷെ ഒരു മണ്കട്ട അതേ കല്ലില്‍ ഉരച്ചാല്‍ പൊടിപൊടിയായി ചിന്നിച്ചിതറും
