ब्रह्महा च सुरापश्च स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः।

एते सर्वे पृथग्ज्ञेयाः महापातकिनो जनाः॥

इन्दिस्चे स्प्रुचे ४४९३ मनुस्मृत्याम्

brahmahā ca surāpaśca steyī ca gurutalpagaḥ|

ete sarve pṛthagjñeyāḥ mahāpātakino janāḥ||

The following types of people are termed and classified as excessively grave sinners..mahaapaathaki The one who causes death of damage to learned people, the one who consumes hooch and gets inebriated, the one who steals, robs and unlawfully appropriates the belonging of others, and the one who causes dishonour to the honour and dignity of his guru by having illicit connections with the womanfolk of the Gurus family.

( Note..The persons who act as accomplices to these acts, abet in these crimes, too are termed as grave sinners elsewhere. The five sins put together are classified as panchamahapatakams)

Each text and each guru or Sadhaka or commentator will prescribe something but that need not be the last word in the matter..

If your tooth is lost after thiry years, even for that there is no natural growth of another tooth,

but only artificial replacements at the best..

No prayaschittam or expiation can bring back to life one person if you have caused his death..

So it is better to know the sins well beforehand and avoid them as far as possible..

If you swallow half a kilo of salt, you may have to drink a whole well and still you may not dissolve and clean your system....
