May the all embracing goddess of intellect who is always showering benefits on us, who is always pleased with us and who is delighted by us her children, be with us. Oh Goddess of muse and supreme intellect, may we the silly humans who spend our days recklessly in worthless talk till you visit us and kindle our intellect, as a result of your affection and compassion to us which is manifested by your visit to our mind, become enlightened and also capable of expressing and sharing the Supreme Truth along with our heroic sons and disciples.

എല്ലാവരെയും അന്‍പോടെ ചേര്‍ത്തുനിര്‍ത്തുന്നവളും എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കുമ നന്മയും സമൃദ്ധിയും ചൊരിയുന്നവളും , നമ്മോടു എപ്പോഴും ഏറെ പ്രീതി വച്ച് പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നവളും അവളുടെ മക്കളായ നമ്മെ കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ഏറെ ആഹ്ളാദിക്കുന്നവളും ആയ, അറിവിന്‍റെ ഉടയോളായ മേധാ ദേവി (സരസ്വതി) എന്നും നമ്മോടൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കട്ടെ.

അത്യുന്നതമായ ധിഷണാ ബലത്തിന്‍റെ അധിപയും സ്രോതസ്സുമായ വിദ്യാ ദേവതേ, നീ ഞങ്ങളെ സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ച് ഞങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം കുടികൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ബുദ്ധിയെ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിക്കുന്ന നിമിഷം വരെ മൂല്യ രഹിതരായ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഞങ്ങളുടെ ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ അലസമായും ശ്രദ്ധയില്ലതെയും അര്‍ത്ഥമോ പ്രയോജനമോ ഇല്ലാത്ത വാക്കുകള്‍ ഉരുവിട്ട് കൊണ്ട് തള്ളിനീക്കി.

ഞങ്ങളോട് നിനക്കുള്ള കരുതലിനും സ്നേഹത്തിനും തെളിവായി നീ ജനങ്ങളുടെ മനസ്സുകളില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞു വന്നു സ്ഥിരവാസം തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ ഞങ്ങളില്‍ അറിവിന്‍റെ പ്രകാശം തെളിഞ്ഞു വന്നു. ആ അറിവിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ബലത്തില്‍ പരമമായ സത്യങ്ങള്‍ അറിയുവാനും അത്തരം അറിവുകള്‍ ഞങ്ങളുടെ വീരന്മാരായ മക്കളോടും ശിഷ്യന്മാരോടുംഒത്ത് പങ്കുവയ്ക്കാനും ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞു. എന്നും അതുപോലെ തുടരുമാറാകട്ടെ.

ॐ यश्छन्दसामृषभो विश्वरूपः। छन्दोभ्योऽध्यमृतात् संबभूव। स मेन्द्रो मेधया स्पृणोतु। अमृतस्य देव धारणो भूयासम्‌।शरीरं मे विचर्षणम्‌। जिह्वा मे मधुमत्तमा।कर्णाभ्यां भूरि विश्रुवम्‌।ब्रह्मणः कोशोऽसि मेधया पिहितः।श्रुतं मे गोपाय। ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः।

yaśchandasāmṛṣabho viśvarūpaḥ। chandobhyo'dhyamṛtāt saṃbabhūva। sa mendro medhayā spṛṇotu। amṛtasya deva dhāraṇo bhūyāsam‌।śarīraṃ me vicarṣaṇam‌। jihvā me madhumattamā।karṇābhyāṃ bhūri viśruvam‌।brahmaṇaḥ kośo'si medhayā pihitaḥ।śrutaṃ me gopāya। om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ|

"That Pranava ( Omkara) (1) which is verily called as Indra,(2) which is the most revered among metres (chandas), (3) which spreads the entire universe in the form of sound (Naada brahman), (4) which is foremost in importance above all other vedic metres, may enlighten me with the power of intellect to fully understand all the vedas and related scriptures. Oh Divinity in the form of pranava, please kindle my faculties for grasping the vedas which are immortal. Render my body capable of acquiring such splendid knowledge. May my tongue be the source of the sweetest of the sweet words from the scriptures . May my two ears be blessed with the opportunity and capability of hearing and understanding the sublime meaning of various scriptures. You are the source of the eternal Brahman. You have spread yourself all over the universe through the supreme intellect. Oh pranava, who is Brahman itself, may you protect me who has learned the scriptures from the mouth of my guru( preceptor) through my ears blessed by you. Om Peace, peace, peace

This is a prayer to the Pranava, the source of supreme intellect (though addressed in this mantra as Indra also, we have to consider this prayer as addressed only to the supreme brahman. There are various metres used in rendering vedas but the pranavam is in the metre Gayatri and it is supreme. It is the supreme sound which became the cause for everything in the universe.

The mantra is a prayer by the student that he may be blessed with the physical and intellectual faculties to enable him to learn and understand the sublime vedas and in general all great knowledge. For a student, healthy body, sweetness in words and speech, and unimpaired capacity to hear and grasp the meaning of what he hears are essential.

The holy word is here described as the treasure-house from which the entire universe and its knowledge sprang up.

The tradition that the knowledge should spring from the mouth of the Guru and should be grasped through the attentive hearing of the disciple is highlighted in this prayer.

This mantra is chanted as the first part of Medhaa Sooktham by the initiates, and it is considered to be a potent vedic prayer which should be chanted by all seekers and also by students who are in pursuit of any knowledge.

ഓം യശ്ഛന്ദസാമൃഷഭോ വിശ്വരൂപഃ। ഛന്ദോഭ്യോഽധ്യമൃതാത് സംബഭൂവ। സ മേന്ദ്രോ മേധയാ സ്പൃണോതു। അമൃതസ്യ ദേവ ധാരണോ ഭൂയാസം।ശരീരം മേ വിചര്ഷണമ്ം। ജിഹ്വാ മേ മധുമത്തമാ।കര്‍ണാഭ്യാം ഭൂരി വിശ്രുവം।ബ്രഹ്മണഃ കോശോഽസി മേ ഓം ശാന്തിഃ ശാന്തിഃ ശാന്തിഃ। ധയാ പിഹിതഃ।ശ്രുതം മേ ഗോപായ।

യജുര്‍വേദം തൈത്തിരീയ സംഹിത, തൈത്തിരീയ ആരണ്യകം, മഹാ നാരായണ

ഓംകാരം എന്നും പ്രണവം എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ആ മന്ത്രം ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ എന്ന് തന്നെ വിളിക്കപ്പെടാം. ഛന്ദസ്സുകളിലും മന്ത്രങ്ങളിലും താരതമ്യതകള്‍ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഏറ്റവും അധികം ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ശബ്ധമാണ് പ്രണവം. ആ പ്രണവം നാദബ്രഹ്മമായി പ്രപഞ്ചം മുഴുവന്‍ വ്യാപിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാ വൈദിക മന്ത്രങ്ങളിലും സ്വരങ്ങളിലും വച്ച് അഗ്രിമസ്ഥാനം കല്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ആ പ്രണവം എന്‍റെ ധിഷണയെ ഉദ്ദീപിക്കട്ടെ. ആ പ്രണവം നല്‍കുന്ന ഉത്തേജനം മൂലം എനിക്ക് അനശ്വരങ്ങളായ എല്ലാ വേദങ്ങളും അറിവിന്‍റെ എല്ലാ സ്രോതസ്സുകളും പ്രാപ്യങ്ങളും വിദിതങ്ങളും ആയിത്തീരട്ടെ.

പ്രണവത്തിന്‍റെ രൂപത്തില്‍ എഴുന്നരുളുന്ന സര്‍വശക്തനായ പരബ്രഹ്മമേ, എനിക്ക് അനശ്വരങ്ങളായ വേദങ്ങളില്‍ അറിവ് നേടാനുതകുന്ന വിധം എന്‍റെ സംവേദന ശക്തി വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കേണമേ. എന്‍റെ ശരീരത്തിനു ആ ജ്ഞാനം ആവാഹിച്ചെടുക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവ് കനിഞ്ഞു അരുളിയാലും. വേദങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള മധുരങ്ങളായ സൂക്തങ്ങള്‍ ഉരുവിടാന്‍ പാകത്തില്‍ എന്റെ നാവിനു മാധുര്യം ലഭിക്കട്ടെ. വേദങ്ങളിലും ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളിലും നിറഞ്ഞു തുളുമ്പുന്ന മഹത്തരങ്ങളായ അറിവുകള്‍ പകര്‍ന്നു തരുന്നത് ശ്രവിച്ച് ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുവാനുള്ള പ്രാപ്തി എന്‍റെ ഇരു ചെവികള്‍ക്കും ഉണ്ടാവട്ടെ.

പ്രണവസ്വരൂപനായ, ദൈവിക സാന്നിധ്യം ആയ അവിടുന്ന് സാക്ഷാല്‍ പരബ്രഹ്മം തന്നെ ആണ്. എന്‍റെ ഗുരുവിന്‍റെ മുഖത്തില്‍ നിന്ന്, അവിടുന്ന് അനുഗ്രഹിച്ച് എന്‍റെ ശ്രവണപുടങ്ങളിലൂടെ മഹത്തായ അറിവ് ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന എനിക്ക് എല്ലാ പ്രകാരവും ഉള്ള സംരക്ഷണം നല്‍കേണമേ. ഓം ശാന്തി ശാന്തി ശാന്തി

ഈ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന നാം ദൈവമായി സങ്കല്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രനവത്തോടു തന്നെയാണ്. ഈ മന്ത്രത്തില്‍ ഇന്ദ്രനെയും ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു എങ്കിലും, അത് സാക്ഷാല്‍ പരബ്രഹ്മത്തെ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചാണ് എന്ന് കരുതേണ്ടി ഇരിക്കുന്നു.

വേദമന്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഉച്ചരിക്കാന്‍ ഒട്ടേറെ ഛന്ദസ്സുകള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട് എങ്കിലും പ്രണവം എന്ന മന്ത്രം ഗായത്രി എന്ന ഛന്ദസ്സിനെ കുറിക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് അത് മറ്റുള്ള ഛന്ദസ്സുകളെക്കാള്‍ പ്രധാനവും പാവനവും ആണ്. ലോകത്തില്‍ എല്ലാ വസ്തുക്കള്‍ക്കും സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ക്കും മൂലകാരണമായ സ്വരമാണ് പ്രണവം.

ഈ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന കൊണ്ട് അറിവ് നേടാന്‍ കൊതിക്കുന്ന വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി തനിക്ക് ആ നാദബ്രഹ്മം ആയ പ്രണവം ശാരീരികമായ കഴിവും ധിഷണാ ശക്തിയും നല്‍കി അനുഗ്രഹിച്ച് എല്ലാ വേദങ്ങളും മറ്റു അറിവുകളും നല്ലവണ്ണം ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാന്‍ പ്രാപ്തന്‍ ആക്കണേ എന്നാണു ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിക്കു ആരോഗ്യം നിറഞ്ഞ ശരീരവും മധുരമായ വാക്കുകളും വിഷയങ്ങള്‍ സൂക്ഷ്മമായി കേട്ട് അറിയുവാനുള്ള കേള്‍വി ശക്തിയും കേട്ടത് ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാനുള്ള നിശിതമായ ഗ്രഹണ ശേഷിയും അത്യന്താപെക്ഷിതങ്ങള്‍ ആണ്. ഇതെല്ലാം പ്രണവം എന്ന ഓംകാരത്തിന്‍ന്‍റെ ഉച്ചാരണവും ഉപാസനയും കൊണ്ട് സിദ്ധമാകേണം എന്നാണു ഈ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന.

പ്രണവസ്വരൂപമായ നാദത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പ്രപഞ്ചവും എല്ലാ അറിവും ഉടലെടുത്തത് എന്ന് ഈ മന്ത്രം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

അറിവും ജ്ഞാനവും ഗുരുമുഖത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കണം എന്നും ഗുരു പറയുന്നത് ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധയോടും അര്‍പ്പണബോധത്തോടും കൂടി കേട്ടറിഞ്ഞു വേണം ജ്ഞാന സമ്പാദനം എന്ന കാര്യവും ഈ മന്ത്രം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

മേധാ സൂക്തം എന്ന മഹാമന്ത്രം ജപിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആമുഖ മായി ഈ മന്ത്രം ബ്രഹ്മചാരികള്‍ ഉരുവിടുന്നു. ജ്ഞാനവും സാധനയും തേടുന്ന എല്ലാ വ്യക്തികളും ഈ മന്ത്രം ചൊല്ലി പ്രണവോപാസന ചെയ്യേണ്ടതാണ്.

मेधा म इन्द्रो ददातु मेधां देवी सरस्वतीःमेधां मे अश्विनावुभावाधत्तां पुष्करस्रजौ॥१॥अप्सरासु च या मेधा गन्धर्वेषु च यन्मनःदेवी मेधा सरस्वती स मां मेधा सुरभिर्जुषताग्ँ स्वाहा॥२॥(महानारयणोपनिषद्॥ ४२॥)

आ मां मेधा सुरभिर्विश्वरूपा हिरण्यवर्णा जगती जगम्या।ऊर्जस्वती पयसा पिन्वमाना स मां मेधा सुप्रतीका जुषताम्॥१॥(महानारयणोपनिषद्॥ ४३॥)

ā māṁ medhā surabhirviśvarūpā hiraṇyavarṇā jagatī jagamyā|ūrjasvatī payasā pinvamānā sa māṁ medhā supratīkā juṣatām||1||mahānārayaṇopaniṣad|| 43||

May the leader of Gods Indra bestow on me the greatest Intellect. May the Goddess Saraswathi grant us intellect. May the divine twin master physicians Ashwins wearing beautiful garlands, enhance our intellect.I hail the sacred divinities.May the intellect that is present in the dancers of heaven the Apsaraas, visit me. May the intellect that is present as discretion and stability of mind in the divine singers called gandharvaas, visit me.May the Goddess Saraswathi who is fragrant and pure, be with me in the form of the sacred scriptures.

May that goddess of muses Saraswathi visit me with Her most pleasant demeanour and bless me with success. That Goddess of intelligence pervades the entire universe like fragrance. She is the one who is possessing the letters (scripts) resplendent in golden colours, Her vision covers the entire realm of knowledge. She is the dispenser of all that a man can desire...dharma, artha, Kama and moksha and she is waited upon always by the seekers. She is the origin of all positive energy. She nourishes me with all elixirs like milk and other potions. And makes my life eminently pleasant for me with wealth and prosperity.

ആ മാം മേധാ സുരഭിര്‍വിശ്വരൂപാ ഹിരണ്യവര്‍ണാ ജഗതീ ജഗമ്യാ।ഊര്‍ജസ്വതീ പയസാ പിന്വമാനാ സാ മാം മേധാ സുപ്രതീകാ ജുഷതാം॥൧॥മഹാനാരയണോപനിഷദ്॥ ൪൩॥

ദേവന്മാരുടെ നേതാവും അവരില്‍ അഗ്രഗന്യനും ആയ ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ എനിക്ക് തീക്ഷ്ണമായ ധിഷണാശക്തി നല്‍കട്ടെ. ദേവിയായ സരസ്വതി എനിക്ക് തീക്ഷ്ണമായ ധിഷണാശക്തി നല്‍കട്ടെ. വര്‍ണ്ണശബളങ്ങളായ ഹാരങ്ങള്‍ ധരിച്ചു ശോഭിക്കുന്ന വിശിഷ്ട ഭിഷഗ്വരന്മാരായ ഇരട്ടപിറന്ന, അശ്വിനി ദേവന്മാര്‍ ഇരുവരും എനിക്ക് തീക്ഷ്ണമായ ധിഷണാശക്തി നല്‍കട്ടെ. എന്റെ ധിഷണാബലം വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കട്ടെ. ആ ദൈവീക വ്യക്തിത്വങ്ങളെ ഞാന്‍ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ദേവ നര്‍ത്തകികളായ അപ്സരസ്സുകളില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ധിഷണയും കലാബോധവും എന്നിലും ഉണ്ടാവട്ടെ. ദേവഗായകരായ ഗന്ധര്‍വന്മാരില്‍  വിവേകത്തിന്‍റെയും മനസ്സിന്‍റെസ്ഥൈര്യത്തിന്‍റെയും രൂപത്തില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ധിഷണാശക്തി എന്നിലും ഉണ്ടാവട്ടെ. പരിശുദ്ധയായ സുഗന്ധവാഹിനിയായ സരസ്വതീ ദേവി പാവനങ്ങളായ വേദങ്ങളിലും ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളിലും ഉള്ള അറിവിന്‍റെ രൂപത്തില്‍ എന്നില്‍ എന്നും കുടികൊണ്ടിരിക്കണേ.

അറിവിന്‍റെയും കലയുടെയും ദേവതയായ സരസ്വതി അവളുടെ ഏറ്റവും ശാന്തവും സുഖദവും ആയ രൂപത്തില്‍ എനിക്ക് മുന്നില്‍ സന്നിഹിതയായി എനിക്ക് എല്ലാ വിജയവും അരുളുമാറാകട്ടെ. സുഗന്ധം എന്ന പോലെ മേധയുടെ ഉടയോളായ ദേവി പ്രപഞ്ചം മുഴുവന്‍ വ്യാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. സ്വര്‍ണ്ണം പോലെ തിളങ്ങുന്ന അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ അവളുടെ ഒരിക്കലും കോട്ടം തട്ടാത്ത സ്വത്തുക്കള്‍ ആണ്. അവളുടെ കടാക്ഷം അറിവിന്‍റെ എല്ലാ മേഖലകളിലും വ്യാപിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. മനുഷ്യന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതെല്ലാം- ധര്‍മവും അര്‍ത്ഥവും കാമവും മോക്ഷവും- നല്‍കി അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുവാന്‍ അവള്‍ക്കു കഴിയും. ഭക്തന്മാരും വിജ്ഞാനദാഹികളും സാധകന്മാരും എന്നും അവളെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നു. എന്നും അവളെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. നന്മയുടെ ഉറവിടമായ തീക്ഷ്ണമായ തേജസ് അവളില്‍ നിന്ന് എപ്പോഴും ബഹിര്‍ഗമിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷീരവും അമൃതവും മറ്റു പോഷകങ്ങളും നല്‍കി അവള്‍ എനിക്ക് എന്നും പുഷ്ടി നല്‍കുന്നു. അവള്‍ എന്‍റെ ജീവിതം ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തവും സുഖകരവും ആക്കിത്തീര്‍ക്കുന്നു. അവള്‍ എനിക്ക് ഏറെ സ്വത്തും സമൃദ്ധിയും നല്‍കി അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.

This is the prayer made to earth.. while preparation of Sacrificial grounds, while colleting mud and clay for making various things needed for yajnas..

This is part of Yajurvedam

The prayer has a universal appeal..

After all this earth is the be all and the end all for all of us humanm being..

Translation of the prayer.

O mother earth, you have been travelled for immemmorial ages by horses and chariots.. Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Vamana and Trivikrama covered all of your surfce with one foot.

You are the source and reservoir of all valuable things.

I am wearing on my head a part of you.. a piece of clay .. moher protect me in every step.

Oh earth, Bhumi, you are verily the milch cow who showers all prosperity on us, you are the foundation for everything, you hold all living being on your wide bosom,

once when Hiranyakashipu submerged you into the ocean, Lord Narayana as the Black boar Varaha of hundred arms lifted you and put you back in your place.

The piece of clay or mud representing mother earth, may you destroy all my sins, all the evil deeds perpertrated by me.

Oh earth, you were given to us by the Supreme being, you were fortified by the holy mantra chants by Kasyapa Prajapathi.

Oh earth, please provide me with nourishment..

All that is worth possessing is contained in you.

Oh earth you are firm on surface, but may you be pleased to remove all the sins that have clung to me as firm layers.

And once you have destroyed all my sins, may I live on this earth with all happiness and attain emancipation afterwards too.
