Good and sincere human beings are indeed rare to find..

In this quote from Neetishatakam the philosopher and visionary poet Bhartruhari is expressing his desperation in finding people of exemplary character.

He says

“It is indeed very rarely that the beautiful earth that carries all the wealth and affluence within her is gifted and decorated with gem-like persons

Who are frugal to the extent of looking utterly poor while using unpleasant and inappropriate wordS

Who are great experts and are very generous too in using agreeable words,

who are extremely averse eve to the idea of having romantic or amorous connections with the ladies other than their own wedded wives,

and who retreat and even run away from situations where they have to make adverse remarks or speak in scandalous terms about others”

Friends who are genuinely affectionate

Relavtives who are not treacherous and greedy

A mind which is not marred by worry and tension

A very attractive personal appearance

Wealth which is stable and never on the wane

and

A mouth which is always spelling out words which are refined by deep learning.

സൂനുഃ സച്ചരിതഃ സതീ പ്രിയതമാ സ്വാമീ പ്രസാദോന്മുഖഃ

അയാള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും മങ്ങലേല്‍ക്കാത്ത നല്ല പേരെടുക്കുന്ന ഉത്തമന്മാരായ മക്കളെക്കൊണ്ട് അനുഗൃഹീതനാവും.

അയാള്‍ തന്നെ അതി തീവ്രമായി എന്നും സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന സഹധര്‍മ്മിണിയേ ജീവിതത്തിനു കൂട്ടായി ലഭിക്കും

അയാളുടെ മേലധികാരിയും മുതലാളിയും എല്ലാം അയാള്‍ക്ക് ഏറെ സഹായ സഹകരണങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കും.

ചങ്ങാതിമാര്‍ അയാളോട് എപ്പോഴും നിറഞ്ഞ സ്നേഹം ഉള്ളവര്‍ ആയിരിക്കും.

അയാളുടെ ബന്ധുക്കള്‍ അയാളോട് അസൂയയും ഈര്‍ഷ്യയും ഒന്നും വച്ചു പുലര്ത്തുകയില്ല.

അയാളുടെ മനസ്സിനെ ഒരു വിധത്തിലുള്ള ആകുലതയോ വേവലാതിയോ ബാധിക്കുകയില്ല.

അയാള്‍ ഏറെ ആകാരഭംഗിയും ആകര്‍ഷണീയതയും കൊണ്ട് അനുഗൃഹീതനാവും

അയാളുടെ വരുമാനസ്രോതസ്സും എന്നും മുടങ്ങാത്തതായിരിക്കും, ഒരിക്കലും കോട്ടം തട്ടാത്ത സ്വത്തുക്കള്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക് എന്നും ഉണ്ടാവും.

ഇതിനെല്ലാം ഉപരിയായി

അയാളുടെ ബുദ്ധിയിലും ചിന്തയിലും അറിവും ആഭിജാത്യവും നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കും, അയാളുടെ നാവില്‍ നിന്ന് നല്ല വാക്കുകള്‍ മാത്രമേ പുറത്ത് വരികയുള്ളൂ

देहिना संप्राप्यते are attained by living beings..

fate has never thought of any remedies to check the destructivepropensities of evil minds. मन्ये दुर्जनचित्तवृत्तिहरणे धातास्ति भग्नोद्यमः

पोतो दुस्तर वारिराशितरणे दीपोऽन्धकारागमे

निर्वाते व्यजनं मदान्धकरिणां दर्पोपशान्तौ शृणिः।

इत्थं तद् भुवि नास्ति यस्य विधिना नोपायचिन्ता कृता

मन्ये दुर्जनचित्तवृत्तिहरणे धातास्ति भग्नोद्यमः॥

A good boat can be put to good use for voyage and we could cross even the stormy ocean which is indeed very difficult to cross

When there is darkness one can light a lamp and dispel the darkness

When the air is hot and sultry and there is no breeze one can feel cool by fanning himself with a fan

When elephants are blind and reckless due to rut, they could be kept under control by effective use of goads

Yes, one could find some sort of checking or control mechanism for almost every situation arising in this earth

But alas, it seems the Lord of fate has never thought of any remedies to check the destructive mental propensities of people with evil minds.

പോതോ ദുസ്തര വാരിരാശിതരണേ ദീപോഽന്ധകാരാഗമേ

നിര്‍വാതേ വ്യജനം മദാന്ധകരിണാം ദര്‍പോപശാന്തൌ ശൃണിഃ।

എത്രയധികം കാറ്റും കോളും കൊണ്ട് പ്രക്ഷുബ്ദമായ കടലില്‍ പെട്ടുപോയാലും അതിലൂടെ തുഴജുകയരാന്‍ ഉതകുന്ന തോണികള്‍ ധാരാളമുണ്ട്

എത്ര വലിയ ഇരുട്ടിലും പ്രകാശം പകരാന്‍ വിളക്കുകള്‍ തെളിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.

കാട്ടില്ലാതെ ചൂടും പുഴുക്കവും നിറഞ്ഞ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില്‍ തണുപ്പ്‌ പകരാന്‍ വിശറി കൊണ്ട് വീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നാല്‍ മതി

മദമിളകി കണ്ണുകാണാതെ ലക്കും ലഗാനും ഇല്ലാതെ മുന്നേറുന്ന കൊമ്പന്മാരെ തളയ്ക്കാന്‍ കൂര്‍ത്ത തോട്ടി ശരിക്കും ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.

അതെ, അത്രയൊന്നും ശരിയല്ലാത്തതായി ഈ ഭൂമുഖത്ത് സംഭവിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കും എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒക്കെ പ്രതിവിധികള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവും.

പക്ഷെ ദുഷ്ടന്മാരുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ ഉദിക്കുന്ന വഴിവിട്ടവയും വിനാഷകരങ്ങളും ആയ ചിന്തകളെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാനും ഇല്ലാതാക്കുവാനും ബ്രഹ്മദേവന്‍ ഒരു ഉപായവും ഒരിക്കലും ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു.

We human beings have somehow fallen into the trap of measuring human values on the basis of wealth, and also measuring wealth on the basis of possessing Kaanchanam or Gold..

The fact that Gold is the sureshot means of investment, in preference to most other means cannot be gainsaid..

Love of Gold appears to be psychological too.. but not without reason..

The friend takes care to wean us away from sins, gently or even forcibly, if the situation arises.

The friend always tries to channelize our course of life towards the best and the most beneficial destinations.

The friend takes extra care to keep facts and reports about our certain situations in life, which are just best to be undiscussed and unpublished, as secrets for ever.

The friend is alway first in the line to highlight our good virtues in whatever way possible.

The friend would never leave us to our own fate and suffering when a real danger confronts us. He would never walk away leaving us in the lurch.

The friend knows by instinct and sixth sense when we are lacking in something, and he never fails to provide us with our essential needs in time..

Meaning..

No one, not even kings need be jealous of the scholars.

The secret and unadvertised wealth known by the name knowledge

Never reaches the notice of the thief.( And it cannot be stolen even if the thieves would want to do that )

That knowledge always provides and enriches the welfare of all in one way or other

That knowledge always grows and gets multiplied when and even if given or distributed without interruptin and in great abundance to all those who seek it..

That knowledge does not get depleted or destroyed even when ( all other things get destroyed) at the time of deluge arising when the eon or Kalpa ends

. Oh kings, please give up your sense of jealousy and intolerance against those who possess such knowledge

who would and who could keep enmity with them ( and survive too)

Knowledge just grows to greater magnitudes when it is shared.

It can be imparted.. but cannot be snatched away or stolen

Normally, the kings are jealous of others possessing any hidden wealth and would try to confiscate such wealth even by using force..

But knowledge is a secret wealth which cannot be depleted by confiscation or inmical actions by force by the king or the State.. So the kings need not entertain jealousy or enmity towards great scholars..

विद्या आख्यं अन्तर्धनं the secret or none too apparent wealth known by the name knowledge

हर्तुः गोचरं न याति. Never reaches the notice of the thief.

A very interesting quote from Nitishatakam of Bhartruhari

There is hardly anyone in this world who would not fall for some sort of bribe or enticement.

The poet asks 

Who is there that would not fall to your side if his mouth is fed with some morsels of solid cooked grain ?

Even the lifeless percussion instrument gives very sweet sound when its face is amply smeared with paste of cooked rice 

It is a usual sight that mridangam players apply paste made of cooked rice on the leather surface of the instrument to ensure that it is supple and gives quality sound and beats.. 

Just like that when people around you are fed well, they will sing your praise.. that too as long as they are fed..

കോ ന യാതി വശം ലോകേ മുഖം പിണ്ഡേന പൂരിതഃ। 

മൃദംഗോ മുഖലേപേന കരോതി മധുരം ധ്വനിം॥ 

നീതിശതകം ഭര്തൃഹരേഃ ൧൦൫

വായ നിറച്ചു ചോറുണ്ടകള്‍ കൊടുത്താല്‍ ആരും നമ്മുടെ കൂടെ വന്നുപോകും 

കഞ്ഞിപ്പശ തേയ്ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മൃദംഗം പോലും മധുരസ്വരം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്‌ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ?

ആഹാരത്തിനും അതുപോലുള്ള പരിഗണനകള്‍ക്കും വശംവദരാകാത്തവര്‍ ആരുമില്ല എന്ന സന്ദേശം ആണ് ഭര്‍തൃഹരി നീതിശതകത്തില്‍ നല്‍കുന്നത്.

അതെ, നമ്മള്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും വായില്‍ ഊട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതുവരെ ചിലര്‍ നമ്മോടൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടാവും . 

കൊടുക്കുന്നത് ശാപ്പാടോ കാശോ എന്തും ആവാം. 

പക്ഷെ പലപ്പോഴും ഈ കൈമടക്കുകള്‍ നിര്‍ത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ചില വിദ്വാന്മാര്‍ പഴയതൊക്കെ മറന്നു തിരിഞ്ഞു കുത്തും.

The great value of silence is underlined her

Silence is created by Brahma the creator with highly potent inherent worth..

Silence is the effective cover for one's ignorance.

It is especially so when one is to be present in an assembly of erudite scholars

And in such assemblies, the best ornament one can have is to maintain silence..

A man is revealed in his true colours when he opens his mouth..

In the company of strangers, even if a fellow is just an idiot, he may look respectable if he is gravely silent..

Open the moth and the veil is lifted ..

But in real life, silence is a greater art to master than the process of moving the tongue..

സ്വായത്തമേകാന്തഗുണം വിധാത്രാ വിനിര്‍മിതം ഛാദനമജ്ഞതായാഃ।

വിശേഷതഃ സര്‍വവിദാം സമാജേ വിഭൂഷണം മൌനമപണ്ഡിതാനാം॥

മൌനം എന്നത് മനുഷ്യര്‍ക്കായി ബ്രഹ്മദേവന്‍ വളരെ ശ്രദ്ധയോടും ഏതു സന്ദര്‍ഭത്തിലും ഉപകാരപ്രദമാവുന്ന വിധത്തിലും സൃഷിച്ച ഒരു  വിലയേറിയ   ഗുണമാണ്.

വിഡ്ഢികള്‍ക്കും അറിവില്ലാത്തവര്‍ക്കും  മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ സമയത്തും മൌനം  സ്വന്തം അജ്ഞത  പുറത്തു കാണിക്കാതെ രക്ഷപ്പെടാനുള്ള ഒരു  മറയോ തിരശ്ശീലയോ ആയി ഉപകരിക്കും. , പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്,   ഏറെ അറിവും  ആഭിജാത്യവും നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന മഹാന്മാരുടെ സഭയില്‍ അവര്‍    എത്തിപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍  മൌനം  അവര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ആഭരണം ആയിരിക്കും.

jñānasyopaśamaḥ kulasya vinayo vittasya pātre vyayaḥ|

akrodhastapasaḥ kṣamā balavatāṁ dharmasya nirvyājatā

sarveṣāmapi sarvakāraṇamidaṁ śīlaṁ paraṁ bhūṣaṇam||

The philosopher king.. and poet and grammarian Bhartruhari in his Neeti Shatakam lists the most desirable qualities in men and also the qualities that add greater value such basic accomplishments.

When one is rich, his benevolence acts as an embellishment to such affluence.

When one is really valorous, he will gain great respect if he is restrained and very balanced in use of words

When he is highly learned, his humility would look like the crowning gem for such wealth of knowledge

The humble and restrained behaviour would be the indicator of his birth in a noble clan

The ultimate merit for his possession of money to spend would be judged by the way he spends his money for the right purposes and on the right people.

If he is endowed with spiritual attainments like penance and sadhana, the real ornament for such achievement is his capacity to control his anger even under great provocation.

The real ornament for a very strong person is his capacity to be patient with others

The peak decoration for the steadfastness in following the rules of dharma is the capacity for remaining honest and transparent.

Above all, over and above all the above attainments, the most distinctive ornament for a noble person is his spotless character..

സര്‍വേഷാമപി സര്‍വകാരണമിദം ശീലം പരം ഭൂഷണം॥

ഭര്‍തൃഹരേഃ നീതിശതകേ ൮൦

ഒരു തത്വജ്ഞാനി, ഭരണാധികാരിയായ രാജാവ്, കവി, വ്യാകരണ വിചക്ഷണന്‍ എന്നീ നിലയിലൊക്കെ പ്രസിദ്ധനായ ഭര്‍തൃഹരി ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ നന്മയ്ക്കും നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഏറെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളായ അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായ ഗുണങ്ങളെയും അത്തരം ഗുണങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ശോഭയും മാറ്റും കൂട്ടുന്ന കൂടുതല്‍ നല്ല ഗുണങ്ങളെയും കുറിച്ചാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രസിദ്ധ കൃതിയായ നീതിശതകത്തില്‍ കാണുന്ന ഈ ശ്ലോകത്തില്‍ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്

ഒരു വ്യക്തി ധാരാളം സമ്പത്ത് ഉള്ളവനാണെങ്കില്‍ അയാളുടെ ഔദാര്യം ആ സമ്പത്തിനു തിളക്കം കൂട്ടുന്നു.

ഒരു വ്യക്തി ഏറെ ധീരനും ശക്തനും ആണെങ്കില്‍, അയാള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വാക്കുകളില്‍ സംയമനവും മിതത്വവും പാലിക്കുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ അത് അയാളുടെ ബഹുമാന്യത ഏറെ വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഒരാള്‍ ഏറെ അറിവും ജ്ഞാനവും നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന എളിമയും സൌഹൃദവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ മഹത്വത്തിന് മാറ്റു കൂട്ടും.

ഒരാള്‍ എളിമയോടും ആത്മസംയമാനത്തോടും ആണ് എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും പെരുമാറുന്നത് എങ്കില്‍ അത് അയാള്‍ ജനിച്ച ഉന്നത കുലത്തിന്‍റെ മഹത്ത്വം തെളിയിക്കുന്നു.

ഇതിനെല്ലാമുപരിയായി ഒരാള്‍ സമ്പാദിച്ച സ്വത്തുക്കളും അവ കൈകാര്യം ചെയാനുള്ള അയാളുടെ കഴിവും എല്ലാം മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ ആദരവോടെ പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത് അയാള്‍ അത്തരം സമ്പത്ത് ശരിയായ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി ശരിയായ വിധത്തില്‍ ചെലവാക്കുമ്പോള്‍മാത്രമാണ്.

ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് തപസ്സു, സാധന എന്നിവമൂലം ആധ്യാത്മികമായ നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ സിദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് എങ്കില്‍ അത്തരം നേട്ടങ്ങളുടെ മകുടത്തില്‍ രത്നം ചാര്‍ത്തുന്നത് പോലെയായിരിക്കും മറ്റുള്ളവരാല്‍ എത്ര പ്രകോപിതനായാലും ആ കോപത്തെ ആത്മനിയന്ത്രണം ഉപയോഗിച്ചു തടുത്തു നിര്‍ത്താനുള്ള അയാളുടെ കഴിവ്.

മറ്റുള്ളവരോട് ക്ഷമയോടും സഹിഷ്ണുതയോടും പെരുമാറാനുള്ള കഴിവാണ് ഒരു ശക്തനായ വ്യക്തിയുടെ ആകര്‍ഷണീയത വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അലങ്കാരം.

എല്ലാ ഗുണങ്ങളുടെയും ഉച്ചകോടിയില്‍ ഒരാളെ ഏറെ തിളക്കത്തോടെ നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്ന ഗുണമാണ് അയാള്‍ക്ക് നീതിയോടും ധര്‍മ്മത്തോടും ഉള്ള അചഞ്ചലമായ പ്രതിബദ്ധതയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ അയാള്‍ക്കുള്ള സത്യസന്ധതവും സുതാര്യതയും.

മേല്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ എല്ലാ ഗുണങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഉപരിയായി ഒരു ഉയര്‍ന്ന മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ ഏറ്റവും വിലയേറിയ ആഭരണം അയാളുടെ കറപുരളാത്ത സ്വഭാവ വിശേഷം ആണ്.

live in glory or just disappear....

कुसुमस्तबकस्येव द्वयी वृत्तिर्मनीषिणः।

मूर्ध्नि वा सर्वलोकस्य शीर्यते वने एव वा॥

भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतके॥

kusumastabakasyeva dvayī vṛttirmanīṣiṇaḥ|

mūrdhni vā sarvalokasya śīryate vane eva vā||

bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatake||

Reach the best you can.. or just wither away in the process..

But no compromises on quality.. No Via media..

This is the message of the philosophical poet Bhartruhari in his Neetishatakam

Just like a fresh bunch of flowers that has bloomed the really noble person too has only two destinations.

The flower reaches the best places.. like the feet of God, or becomes the object of decoration of the best persons or places.

If that does not happen the flower just decays and dies in the forest itself.

Similarly the noble person, the person of substance should strive and reach the top of the world through concerted action in the best way he can..

Else, he should just keep anonymous and wither away..

He should never go for the ordinary and should never compromise..

Yes, one has to do his best..

Of course nothing to be ashamed if one attempts and fails.

But he should be true to himself.. and he should be able to tell himself that he did his best..

He should be able to tell himself that he did not leave any stone unturned..

We tend to choose the easy way.. We tend to try to snooze in the comfort zone.. But that choice would make us non entities.. Men of no value, no substance..

Is it that we really want?

കുസുമസ്തബകസ്യേവ ദ്വയീ വൃത്തിര്‍മനീഷിണഃ।

മൂര്‍ധ്നി വാ സര്‍വലോകസ്യ ശീര്യതേ വനേ ഏവ വാ॥

ഭര്‍തൃഹരേഃ നീതിശതകേ॥

എത്താവുന്ന  ഉന്നതിയില്‍  എത്തുവാന്‍ ആത്മാര്‍ഥമായും മടിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കാതെയും ശ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുക. ഒന്നുകില്‍  ഉയരത്തില്‍ എത്തും. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍  ആ യാത്രയില്‍  സ്വയം ഇല്ലാതാവും.

പക്ഷെ ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍  ഒരു വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയും ഇല്ല.   ഇടത്താവളങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയാല്‍  അവിടെ പറ്റിക്കൂടാന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും  തയാറാവരുത്.

ഈ സന്ദേശം നമുക്ക് നല്‍കുന്നത്   ചിന്തകരില്‍  അഗ്രഗണ്യനായ ഭര്‍തൃഹരി  ആണ്.  ഈ സന്ദേശം  നീതിശതകത്തില്‍  നിന്നാണ്.

പുതിയതായി വിടര്‍ന്ന  പൂക്കളുടെ  കൂട്ടത്തിന്  എത്തിപ്പെടാന്‍  രണ്ടു  സ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രമേ  മുന്നില്‍ ഉള്ളൂ.  അവ സര്‍വശക്തന്‍റെ പാടങ്ങളില്‍ എത്തുന്നു, അലങ്കാരമായി  ഉയര്‍ന്ന സ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ എത്തുന്നു.  അപ്രകാരം ഉന്നതിയില്‍ എത്തുവാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലെങ്കില്‍  അവ  കാട്ടിലെ, തോട്ടത്തിലെ ചെടിയില്‍ തന്നെ കിടന്ന് വാടി വീഴുന്നു.   തരവും ഉന്നതിയും ഉള്ള  സജ്ജനങ്ങളും  ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ട് പോകേണ്ടാതം  അതുപോലെ തന്നെ  ആണ്.  അവര്‍ ജീവിതത്തിന്‍റെ ഉന്നതിയില്‍ എത്തിപ്പെടാന്‍  ഇടവിടാതെ പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയും  ആ ലക്ഷ്യം നേടുകയും വേണം.    ആ പരിശ്രമത്തില്‍  വിജയിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍   ആരാലും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടാതെ   ആരെയും ശല്യപ്പെടുത്താതെ പേരില്ലാത്തവന്‍ എന്ന പോലെ   ജീവിതം  നയിച്ചു തീര്‍ക്കണം.

കഴിവും തരവും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തി ഒരിക്കലും   ഏറെ ശരാശരി മാത്രമായ  ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളോടെ ജീവിക്കരുത്.  തന്‍റെ  കഴിവിന്‍റെ  പരമാവധി ഉപയോഗിച്ച്  ഉന്നതിയില്‍  എത്തുക തന്നെ വേണം.   ഈ പരിശ്രമത്തില്‍  ഒരാള്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടുപോയി എന്നിരിക്കട്ടെ.  അതില്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക്   വിഷമമോ ലജ്ജയോ തോന്നേണ്ട  കാര്യം ഒട്ടും ഇല്ല.

കഴിയാവുന്നതെല്ലാം ചെയ്തു, മുട്ടാവുന്ന വാതിലുകളില്‍ എല്ലാ  മുട്ടിനോക്കി  എന്ന് അയാള്‍  സ്വയം  ഉറപ്പു വരുത്തണം.

പലപ്പോഴും നാം  എളുപ്പവഴികളില്‍ സഞ്ചരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു.    സുഖകരമായ മാര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് പുറത്ത് പോവാന്‍ നാം മടിക്കുന്നു.  വഴിയില്‍  ഒരു ഉറക്കം പാസാക്കാന്‍ പോലും നമുക്ക്  ഇഷ്ടമാണ്.  പക്ഷെ  ആ സമീപനം  നമ്മെ  ഒരു കഴമ്പും ഇല്ലാത്ത വ്യക്തികള്‍ ആക്കി മാറ്റും.

അതാണോ നമുക്ക് വേണ്ടത് ?

विवेकभ्रष्टानाम् भवति विनिपातः शतमुखाः॥

śiraḥ śārve svargātpaśupatiśirastaḥ kṣitidharam 

mahīdhrāduttuṅgādavanimavaneścāpi jaladhim|

adhodho gaṅgeyam padamupagatā stokamathavā

vivekabhraṣṭānām bhavati vinipātaḥ śatamukhāḥ||

The philosopher King Bhartruhari is pondering over the fate of people who have to face fall from a place of honour.. The slide down accelerated into cascades and the fall is abysmal

This Ganga, the great river of Heaven slipped from the head of Sharva the Shiva

From there she fell in to the peaks of Himavan the great mountain who is the one who holds the earth in place

From the peaks of this great mountain she flows into plain valleys of the land

And finally after flowing through plain valleys she finds her end by falling into the ocean

Just like that, for people who have abandoned caution and discretion and have started to slip from their exalted postions,

the fall and the pain and dishonour arising out of such fall grow hundredfold..

The head of Shiva was the most honourable and lovely place to live

From there the river fell into the peaks of Himalaya, which were at least cool

And further slide was over dirty, silt filled landscape, but even here the river maintained her identity

But finally she fell into the ocean facing almost a total annihilation

This is the case with all who happen to have a fall from a positon of honour..

It is especially so when such fall is due to lack of discretion.

तथा पतन्ननार्यस्तु मृत्पिण्डपतनम् यथा॥

भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतके॥

tathā patannanāryastu mṛtpiṇḍapatanam yathā||

From Bhartruhari's Neetishatakam

A noble and cultured person, even if a fall in fortunes happens to him, would bounce back to normal heights like a ball thrown down.

But an evil and uncultured fellow, when a fall occurs to him , just settles down like a wet lump of clay falling from a height..never to rise again..

For good people setbacks in life are just prefaces to rise to greater heights..

പ്രായഃ കന്ദുകപാതേനോത്പതത്യാര്യഃ പതന്നപി|

തഥാ പതന്നനാര്യസ്തു മൃത്പിണ്ഡപതനം യഥാ||

ഭര്‍തൃഹരേഃ നീതിശതകേ||

തരവും യോഗ്യതയും ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യന് ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഭാഗ്യദോഷം സംഭവിച്ച് അയാള്‍ കുറെയൊക്കെ വീണുപോയാലും, ആ പ്രതിസന്ധിയെല്ലാം തരണം ചെയ്ത് സാധാരണഗതിയിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചു ഉയരും. താഴോട്ട് എറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പന്ത് ഭൂമിയില്‍ തട്ടി വീണ്ടും തനിയെ ഉയര്‍ന്നു വരുന്നത് പോലെ അത് സംഭവിക്കുന്നു.

എന്നാല്‍ ഒരു കഴിവും ഔന്നത്യവും ഇല്ലാത്ത ആള്‍ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ അധഃപതിക്കുന്നത് ഒരു വലിയ കളിമണ്‍ കട്ട താഴോട്ടു വീഴുന്നത് പോലെ തന്നെ ആണ്. ആ വീഴ്ചയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം അയാള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ക് ഉയരാന്‍ പോകുന്നില്ല.

ഭര്‍തൃഹരിയുടെ നീതി ശതകത്തില്‍ നിന്ന്.

evil is forced on you

मृगमीनसज्जनानां तृणजल-
सन्तोषविहितवृत्तीनां।
लुब्धकधीवरपिशुना निष्कारण-
मेव वैरिणो जगति॥५०॥
भर्त्तृहरेः नीतिशतकात्
mṛgamīnasajjanānāṁ tṛṇajala-
santoṣavihitavṛttīnāṁ|
lubdhakadhīvarapiśunā niṣkāraṇa-
meva vairiṇo jagati||50||
bharttṛhareḥ nītiśatakāt
Even the quiet and peaceful mortals come across enemies in the world for no fault of theirs. 
The antelope just survives on whatever grass is available in the remote corner of a forest.  But the hunter is always behind it greedy for its flesh. 
Similarly, the poor fish lives in water of whatever purity and does not encroach upon the activities of others.
 But the fisherman is always there, huge net in hand to trap it, kill it and make it his supper.
 In the same way wherever there are good people who are happy with what they have, jealous and evil colleagues haunt them trying to put hassles on the path of the good people and lead them to helplessness. 
Even the most innocent beings are hunted by evil forces. 
This appears to the law of nature, according to the philosopher-king Bharthruhari.

മൃഗമീനസജ്ജനാനാം തൃണജല-

സന്തോഷവിഹിതവൃത്തീനാം।

ലുബ്ധകധീവരപിശുനാ നിഷ്കാരണ-

മേവ വൈരിണോ ജഗതി॥൫൦॥

ഭര്ത്തൃഹരേഃ നീതിശതകാത്

ഏറെ ശാന്തരും സമാധാനപ്രിയരും ആയ ജീവികള്‍ പോലും അവരുടേതല്ലാത്ത തെറ്റുകളും കുറ്റങ്ങളും മൂലം പലപ്പോഴും ശക്തരായ ശത്രുക്കളെ നേരിടേണ്ട പരിതസ്ഥിതിയില്‍ എത്തിപ്പെടുന്നു. ഒരു കാട്ടിന്‍റെ വിദൂരമായ ഒഴിഞ്ഞ മൂലയില്‍ വളരുന്ന പുല്ലുകള്‍ മാത്രം ഭക്ഷിച്ച് ജീവന്‍ മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന മാന്‍പേടയുടെ പിന്നില്‍ അതിന്‍റെ മാംസം കൊതിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വേടന്‍ എത്തുന്നു. ശുദ്ധമോ ശുദ്ധമാല്ലാത്തതോ ആയ ജലത്തില്‍ ജീവിക്കുകയും മറ്റൊരെ ജീവിയുടെയും പ്രവര്‍ത്തന മേഖലയില്‍ ഇരച്ചുകയറാന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ഒരിക്കലും ശ്രമിക്കാതെ ഒതുങ്ങിക്കൂടുന്ന പാവത്താന്‍മാരായ മത്സ്യങ്ങള്‍ ധാരാളം ഉണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ അവയെ വലിയ വലയില്‍ കുടുക്കാനും കൊന്നു കറിവച്ച് തിന്നുവാനുമായി ആര്‍ത്തിപൂണ്ടു മുക്കുവന്‍ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കിട്ടുന്ന വിഭവങ്ങള്‍ എത്ര തുച്കമായാലും അവകൊണ്ട് തൃപ്തിപ്പെട്ടു ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ട് നീക്കുന്ന സാധുക്കളായ,നല്ലവരായ, മനുഷ്യരെ ദുഷ്ടലാക്കോടെ പിന്തുടര്‍ന്നു അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാനും അവരെ നിസ്സഹായര്‍ ആക്കുവാനും എന്നും വ്യഗ്രത വച്ചു പുലര്‍ത്തുന്ന അസൂയാലുക്കളായ സഹവര്‍ത്തികള്‍ എപ്പോഴും അവരുടെ അരികില്‍ത്തന്നെ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ദുഷ്ട ശക്തികള്‍ എപ്പോഴും ഏറെ പാവങ്ങളും നിഷ്കളങ്കരും ആയ വ്യക്തികളെ പിന്തുടര്‍ന്നു അവര്‍ക്ക് നാശം ഉണ്ടാക്കുവാന്‍ കച്ചകെട്ടി പുറപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടാവും.

ഇതാണ് പ്രകൃതി നിയമം എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു എന്ന അഭിപ്രായമാണ് ദാര്‍ശനിക കവിവര്യനായ ഭര്‍തൃഹരിക്കുള്ളത്. --

that day will come

या साधूंस्च खलान् करोति विदुषो मूर्खान् हितान् द्वेषिणः।
प्रत्यक्षं कुरुते परोक्षममृतं हालहलं तत्स्क्षणं
तामाराधय सत्क्रित्याम् भगवतीम् भोक्तुम् फलं वाञ्चितम्
हे साधो व्यसनैगुणेषु विपुले ष्वास्था वृथा मा कृथा।
भत्रुहरेर्नीतशतकं
yā sādhūṁsca khalān karoti viduṣo mūrkhān hitān dveṣiṇaḥ|
pratyakṣaṁ kurute parokṣamamṛtaṁ hālahalaṁ tatskṣaṇaṁ
tāmārādhaya satkrityām bhagavatīm bhoktum phalaṁ vāñcitam
he sādho vyasanaiguṇeśu vipule ṣvāsthā vṛthā mā kṛthā|
bhartruharernītaśatakaṁ 
You noble peope, if you embark on the path righteous, as prescribed by the traditons and divine customs, the good deeds by you will make the wicked people into staunch supporters, your enemies will be turned into bosom friends doing your bidding, whatever good you were doing in secrecy will now become public and gain praise, even the worst poison halahalm will trun inno amrutham, In the course of time all evil and negative aspects will turn into positive in your favorur. So do not panick, or disheartende.

The optimaism of a seer poet is apparent here. Let us hope his prophecy comes true.

।श्रीकृष्णो रक्षतु।

nītiśatakam  bhartruhareḥ

The sad plight of a menial servant is indeed unbearable. 
Even an ascetic who is inure to all things mundane will not be able to cope up with the demands of this job or the innuendos  a servant receives 
 If the servant keeps silence he is called dumb.
 If he talks out he will be branded either as a chatterbox or idiot. 
If he goes near the master he is called arrogant, and if he keeps a respectful distance he is accused as a nincompoop.
 If  he shows patience, he is a coward and  if he exhibits impatience, he is accused as low bred.
 How testing his life is.

The bull elephant is at its beautiful best when it is about to manifest rut, the sky is most bountiful where it is arrayed with raining clouds, the night is most elegant when the full moon rises a lady is most adorable when she has a noble character (this will apply to men also) a horse becomes celebrity with its speed, a household becomes attractive when there are frequent celebrations, a speech becomes attractive with the proper use of words, grammar and syntax. the rivers add to their glory by housing attractive swan duos. The family is the most gifted when it has an eminent son. The earth, meaning the country shines with the good ruler. And the whole three world is brightened absolutely by the presence of the one and only Sun.

An elephant is the most vigorous when it is on its ruts..

The sky is full when it is covered with rain-clouds..

The night is never glorious without the full moon..

Spotless character is the most cherished jewel for a noble lady..

A horse is judged by its speed..

A temple enhances its glory with daily festivities..

Words assume meaning with grammar..

The river is beautiful when pairs of swans swim around..

An assembly is enlivened by the presence of great scholars..

A clan is known by its illustrious scions.

The kingdom is in full glory when a great ruler presides over it

and the whole Universe remains in glorious illumination provided by the Sun..

നാഗോ ഭാതി മദേന ഖം ജലധരൈഃ പൂര്‍ണേന്ദുനാ ശര്‍വരീ

വാണീ വ്യാകരണേന ഹംസമിഥുനൈഃ നദ്യഃ സഭാ പണ്ഡിതൈഃ

സത്പുത്രേണ കുലം നൃപേണ വസുധാ ലോകത്രയം ഭാനുനാ॥

നീതിസാരേ

മദപ്പാട് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ആണ് ഒരു ആന ഏറ്റവും ശക്തനായിരിക്കുന്നത്.

മഴ പൊഴിയാന്‍ വെമ്പിനില്‍ക്കുന്ന കാര്‍ ര്‍മേഘങ്ങള്‍ ഉരുണ്ടു കയറുമ്പോള്‍ ആകാശം ഏറെ പരന്നുകിടക്കുന്നതായി തോന്നുന്നു.

മുഴു നിലാവ് ഉദിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന നാളിലാണ് രാത്രിക്ക് ഏറെ ഭംഗി.

ഒരു വനിതയ്ക്ക് അവരുടെ കളങ്കം തൊട്ടുതീണ്ടാത്ത ചാരിത്യ്രം ആണ് ഏറ്റവും ആകര്‍ഷണീയമായ ഗുണമായി തിളങ്ങുന്നത്.

ഒരു കുതിരയുടെ ഉയര്‍ന്ന ജനുസ്സ് കണക്കാക്ക്പെടുന്നത് അതിനു ഓടാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന വേഗത പരിഗണിച്ചാണ്.

ഒരു ഹര്‍മ്യമോ ദേവാലയമോ അവയുടെ ആകര്‍ഷണീയത ഏറെ പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് അവിടെ തുടരെത്തുടരെ ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രമാണ്

വാക്കുകളും വചനങ്ങളും അവയുടെ ആകര്‍ഷണീയതയുടെ പാരമ്യത്തിളും അര്‍ത്ഥസംപുഷ്ടിയിലും എത്തുന്നത് ഉചിതമായ വ്യാകരണവും ശരിയായ വാക്യപ്രയോഗവും കൊണ്ട് മാത്രമാണ്.

ഇണകളായി അരയന്നങ്ങള്‍ നീന്തിത്തുടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രമാണ് ഒരു നദിക്ക് സൌന്ദര്യം കൈവരുന്നത്.

പക്വമതികളും ധിഷനാധനന്മാരും ആയ പണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രമാണ് ഒരു സഭ അതിന്‍റെ മഹത്വത്തില്‍ എത്തുന്നത്.

നല്ല സ്വഭാവഗുണവും അന്തസ്സും തരവും എല്ലാം ഉള്ള മകന്‍ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ മാത്രമേ കുലത്തിന് അതിന്‍റെ തല ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടികാന്‍ സാധിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ

കാര്യശേഷിയും എല്ലാ വിധത്തിലുമുള്ള ഔന്നത്യവും നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്ന രാജാവ് അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഭരണാധികാരി അധികാരത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ മാത്രമേ ഒരു രാജ്യം അതിന്‍റെ സമൃദ്ധിയുടെയും യശസ്സിന്‍റെയും പാരമ്യത്തില്‍ നില കൊള്ളുകയുള്ളൂ.

മൂന്ന് ലോകങ്ങളായി പറന്നു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ പ്രപഞ്ചം മുഴുവന്‍ അതിന്‍റെ തിളക്കവും ഓജസ്സും ഉന്മേഷവും ആഹ്ളാദവും എല്ലാം നിലനിര്‍ത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് നമ്മെ കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിക്കണം എന്നുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അതിനു മുകളില്‍ ഊര്‍ജ്ജത്തിന്‍റെയും പ്രകാശത്തിന്‍റെയും നിത്യ സ്രോതസായ സൂര്യന്‍ ഉദിച്ചുയര്‍ന്നു നില്‍ക്കുക തന്നെ വേണം

रत्नैर् महाब्धेः तुतुषुर्न देवाः
न भेजिरे भीमविषेण भीतिं।
सुधां विना न प्रययुर्विरामं
न निश्चितार्त्थाद् विरमनित् धीराः॥
भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकं॥७१॥
ratnair mahābdheḥ tutuṣurna devāḥ
na bhejire bhīmaviṣeṇa bhītiṁ|
sudhāṁ vinā na prayayurvirāmaṁ
na niścitārtthād viramanit dhīrāḥ||
bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakaṁ ||71||

when we set our eyes on a target, there should be no second thoughts and we should not be content with the second best by products of our attempts. In the history of churning the Oceans for amrutha or the producer of eternal youth, this is evident. The Devaas set out for the amrutha.. First, the churning of the milk ocean brought out great, invaluable gems..some of the minions took them away but the devas were not satisfied. Then came the calamity of the churning rope, the great snake vasuki vomiting the killer poison halahala, (usually second step in investigation) then the devas did not run away in fear (they found a calm sage of a God Lord Siva to drink all the poison...the poor guy was very kind but had his wife not managed to fix the poison on his throat itself and not allowed it to go down he would have attained martyrdom, it is a different story) . The devas stopped only when they got the nectar ultimately (thank god, they were not Income taxmen, if it were so they would have continued to churn up facts and more fiction and they would have confiscated the gems, consumed the poison without any ill effects --they were the better candidates than siva for no poison ever kills the source itself-- and seized the ambrosia and with notices for additional demands dried up the milky ocean and even put the owner of the ocean lord krishna to civil prison.) The moral of the story is that the really bold people do not stop until the ultimate goal is reached
