where can you find a darker niche to hide ?

क्षीरसारमपहृत्य शङ्कया स्वीकृतं यदि पलायनं त्वया।

मानसे मम नितान्त तामसे नन्दनन्दन कथं न लीयसे॥

kṣīrasāramapahṛtya śaṅkayā svīkṛtaṁ yadi palāyanaṁ tvayā|

mānase mama nitānta tāmase nandanandana kathaṁ na līyase||

You thief, son of Nanda, Krishna, are you running for shelter, fearing discovery, capture and punishment after stealing butter ? If that is so why don’t you hide inside my mind, my mind which is filled with eternal darkness ?

Krishna has to find a dark corner to hide, as he has stolen butter and is afraid of being caught. He is actually running around searching for a place to hide. The poor devotee tells the Lord.. Krishna, the darkest place, where there can never be any light of enlightenment is my own mind. Why do not you occupy the dark shelter that is my dark mind?

The poet thinks that there could be no darker space to hide, than his own mind.

The poet perhaps forgets the fact that once that butter-thief occupies his mind, that space would be converted into a region of eternal brightness.

हे नन्दनन्दन You son of Nadagopa त्वया by you क्षीरसारं butter अपहृत्य having robbed, having stolen शङ्कया in fear of being found out, being caught पलायनं flight for shelter यदि if स्वीकृतं adopted चेत् if that is so त्वं you नितान्त तामसे where there is eternal, permanent darkness मम my मानसे mind कथं न why not लीयसे you stay hiding ?

കൊച്ചു കള്ളാ, നന്ദഗോപന്‍റെ മകനെ, കൃഷ്ണാ, നീ വെണ്ണ കട്ടെടുത്ത ശേഷം ആ കളവു കണ്ടുപിടിക്കപ്പെടുമെന്നും അടി കിട്ടും എന്നും ഭയന്ന് തൊണ്ടിമുതലുമായി ഒളിസങ്കേതം തേടി ഓടി നടക്കുകയാണല്ലേ.?

നിനക്ക് എന്നും (അറിവില്ലായ്മടെയും പാപത്തിന്‍റെയും )ഇരുട്ട് മാത്രം നിറഞ്ഞ എന്‍റെ മനസ്സില്‍ക്കയറി ഭദ്രമായി ഒളിച്ചിരുന്നൂടെ ?

ആ ഇരുട്ടില്‍ നിന്നെ ആര് കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാനാണ് ?

അജ്ഞതയുടെ അന്ധകാരം ചൂഴുന്ന സ്വന്തം മനസ്സിനേക്കാള്‍ ഇരുണ്ട ഒരു ഇടവും ഉണ്ടാവാനിടയില്ല എന്നാണ് കവി കരുതുന്നത്.

പക്ഷെ കവി ഒരു കാര്യം മറക്കുന്നു. വെണ്ണ കട്ട ആ കുട്ടിക്കുറുമ്പന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ മനസ്സില്‍ കയറിയാല്‍ പിന്നെ അവിടമെല്ലാം അനശ്വരമായ പ്രകാശം കൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞു പോവില്ലേ ?

परपरिवादः परिषदि कथंचन पण्डितेन न कर्तव्यः।

सत्यमपि तन्न वाच्यं यदुक्तमसुखावहं भवति॥

paraparivādaḥ pariṣadi kathaṃcana paṇḍitena na kartavyaḥ।

satyamapi tanna vācyaṃ yaduktamasukhāvahaṃ bhavati॥

A man of learning and wisdom should never utter words or make speeches which are scandalous and causing damages to other, in public or in popular assemblies Even if such speeches or utterances are based on facts and convey truth, they should be avoided since such words cause discomfort and pain to all.

Many eyebrows will be raised when this is read. In the present era of trolls and excessive media activism, whistleblowing is the sureshot way to popularity.

पण्डितेन by a man of learning कथंचन on any occasion परिषदि in an assembly (of respectable persons ) परपरिवादः talks belittling, point out the defects in others, न कर्तव्यः should never be done . यद् उक्तं what is spoken असुखावाहं unpleasant, causing distress भवति is सत्यमपि even it is truth, even it is based on facts तद् that न वाच्य should not be spoken

പരപരിവാദഃ പരിഷദി കഥംചന പണ്ഡിതേന ന കര്‍തവ്യഃ।

സത്യമപി തന്ന വാച്യം യദുക്തമസുഖാവഹം ഭവതി॥

വിവരവും വിവേകവും ഉള്ള ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു സഭയിലോ സമിതിയിലോ അതുപോലുള്ള പൊതു വേദികളിലോ മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ കുറ്റങ്ങളും കുറവുകളും വിളിച്ചു പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകള്‍ പരസ്യമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത്. ഒരുപക്ഷെ അത്തരം കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തലുകളും വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങളും എല്ലാം മതിയായ തെളിവോടെയും യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യ ത്തില്‍ അധിഷ്ടിതങ്ങളും ആയിരിക്കാം. എങ്കിലും അത്തരം വാക്കുകള്‍ എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും വിഷമവും പ്രയാസങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടാക്കും.

ഇന്നത്തെ ട്രോളുകളുടെയും മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെ അളവറ്റ വാര്‍ത്താ ദാഹത്തിന്റെയും കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ഇത് വായിക്കുന്നവര്‍ ഇതിനെ എതിര്‍ക്കാം. പരിഹസിക്കാം.

മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ തെറ്റുകളും കുറ്റങ്ങളും വിളിച്ചു പറയുക എന്നതാണ് പലരും വിജയത്തിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയായി ഇപ്പോഴൊക്കെ മുന്നില്‍ കാണുന്നത്.

Saw the book, History of Dharmasatras by Kane..

It is a huge creation in seven or eight volumes( five volumes with some volumes divided into parts..varying according to the edition) each running to an average seven hundred pages..

Could not manage even to read more than fifty pages of the first volume..

But I was simply dumb folded..

The author has read and digested all the major texts on Vedas, Upanishads and Dharmasastras and the commentaries thereon.. and has referred even to the contemporaneous articles on various subjects of the period in which it was written (1920s to 1940s).. and has added indexes to include views based on articles published after the book went to press..

What a dedication..What an erudition.. What a tenacity..

The author was an eminent scholar and a great jurist.. and authority in HIndu law..

Those are the lives which have really meaning.

One need not be a politician to have a good collection of Sanskrit books or for that matter any type of book.., and also to have a desire to read..

Luckily most of the treasures of Sanskrit literature are nowadays available in digitized form.. practically free of cost...

Of course one can understand about the huge collection of books by Dr S Radhakrishnan seen in public libraries,, He was a scholar first and scholar last and incidentally was the President of India too..

In many showcases and libraries of showy people we can see the leather-bound shells of great books with golden inscriptions, arranged neatly and permanently fixed to shelves which are locked for ever..

I have no business to remark, but could not help it when I saw some remark about the book collections of politicians in India..

I have downloaded at least twenty to thirty thousand ebooks(maybe because they are free), but could not read even a hundred volumes and my humble personal library collected over thirty years may contain a couple of thousand unread printed books..

A person who has not personally experienced something or faced some challenging situation would not be able to realize the depth and seriosity of the situation or experience.

A human being who is enjoying liberty, a person who is free to move about and carry on with his own business without control from others, would never understand the miserable plight of a person who has lost his liberty and is under the control and manipulation of another person or entity.

येन by whom यद् न what is not अनुभूतं experienced, perceived, suffered तस्य रूपं its form सः he नnot अवैति know, understand, realize

परतन्त्रस्य bound, one who is in captivity, one who is under the control of others देहिनः human being व्यथां misery, स्वतन्त्रः one who is free, one who is not shackled न वेत्ति does not understand

അനുഭൂതം ന യദ് യേന രൂപം നാവൈതി തസ്യ സഃ।

 ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യം താങ്കള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലായിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. വളരെ ഭംഗിയായും ആലങ്കാരികമായും ഭാഷ എഴുതണം, ഉപയോഗിക്കണം എന്നൊന്നും അല്ല ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞത്. നാടന്‍ ഭാഷയോ ഇംഗ്ലീഷോ തമിഴോ മലയാളമോ ലോക്കല്‍ ഭാഷയോ എന്തും ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ ഒരു സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു ഭാഷ ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനു ചില നിയമങ്ങളും ചട്ടവട്ടങ്ങളും കീഴ്  വഴക്കങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ ഉണ്ട്. എല്ലാം മാറ്റിമറിച്ച് ചില രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാര്‍ പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ എന്തെങ്കിലും വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞിട്ട് തന്‍റെ അഭിപ്രായത്തില്‍ താന്‍ പറഞ്ഞതാണ് ശരിയായ ഭാഷാ പ്രയോഗം എന്നൊക്കെ തട്ടിവിടുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് എനിക്ക് അഭിപ്രായ വ്യതാസം. ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരന്‍ ഒരു ന്യായാധിപനെ ശുംഭന്‍ എന്ന് വിളിച്ച ശേഷം ശുംഭന്‍ എന്ന വാക്കിനു തിളങ്ങുന്ന ആള്‍ എന്നാണു അര്‍ത്ഥം എന്നൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യമാണ് ഇവിടെ ഓര്‍മ്മ വരുന്നത്.

തന്തയ്ക്ക് പിറക്കാത്തവന്‍ എന്ന് ഒരാളെ തെറി വിളിച്ച ശേഷം ദൈവവും തന്തയ്ക്ക് പിറക്കാത്തവന്‍ ആണെന്നും ആ അര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ താന്‍ തന്‍റെ എതിരാളിയെ ദൈവത്തോടു ഉപമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു എന്നും പറയാന്‍ വരെ ചിലര്‍ക്ക് ഉളുപ്പോന്നും ഉണ്ടാവില്ല.

ഇതാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ ചര്‍ച്ചാവിഷയം അല്ലാതെ താങ്കള്‍ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഭാഷയില്‍ പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ഗ്രാഡ്വേഷന്‍ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ചോദിക്കാനൊന്നും ഞാന്‍ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.

It seems you did not understand what I said. I did not say that the language should be written and used in a very beautiful and figurative way. You can use the vernacular, English, Tamil, Malayalam or local language. But when a language is used in a place, there are certain rules, regulations and conventions. I have a difference of opinion about how some politicians change everything and say something and then interpret  it  as something and then tell  that in their opinion what they said is the correct language usage. This reminds me of a politician who called a judge a Shumbhan and said that the word Shumbhan means a shining person.

After calling someone a son of a bitch, some people will not even bother to say that God is also a son of a bitch and in that sense he was comparing his opponent to God.

This is the topic of discussion here, I did not mean to ask if you have done your post-graduation in any language.

Arguments and interpretation of ideas and beliefs are the hallmarks of healthy discussion and exchange of ideas.  

However  if someone chooses to break even the rules of the language and etymology and asserts that "this word, according to my feeling would mean this".. that is outside the limits of any sort of imagination. 

Even Panini, Patanjali, or the great Lord Nataraja Raja who danced and gave the sootrams defining the phonetics of letters in fourteen aphorisms would not dare to do so.

 Nevertheless  such assertions  can be made in social media.

Bhagavan Vyasa says in Mahabharatham than he would fear a situation that would lead one to tell untruth, or a person who would speak untruth, even more than a situation where he would face sure death.

അമ്മയായ ഭൂമീദേവി സ്വയം പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നു. അസത്യത്തേക്കാള്‍ ഹീനമായ ഒരു അധര്‍മ്മവും ഇല്ല. ഭൂമി വീണ്ടും ശങ്കക്കിടയില്ലാത്ത വിധം പറയുന്നു. ഏതു കാര്യവും സഹിക്കുവാന്‍ എനിക്ക് കഴിയും, ഏതു വിധത്തിലുള്ള ജീവിയേയും ഞാന്‍ ചുമന്നു നില്‍ക്കും പക്ഷെ നേരും നെറിയും ഇല്ലാത്തവനെ, കളവു പറയുകയും വഞ്ചനയോടെ ജീവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന വ്യക്തിയെ താങ്ങി നിര്‍ത്തുക എന്നത് മിക്കവാറും അസാധ്യമാണ്.

വ്യാസഭഗവാന്‍ ഭാരതത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നു.

മരണം വന്നെയ്ക്കുമോ എന്ന ഭയത്തെക്കാള്‍ അസത്യം പറയുന്നതിനെ, അസത്യം പറയുന്നവനെ ഞാന്‍ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു

If you try to read the puranas and other pieces of traditional literature of India--these are partly history partly fictional partly secular partly religious-- you will discover that when there is a decline in righteousness on earth, it's weight would increase to unbearable levels and mother earth would suffer and become incapable of maintaining her balance. For relief, she would approach the supreme Lord and controller-call him narayana or shiva or by any name you would prefer-and on her request the Lord would incarnate on earth in some form, would annihilate the evil and would restore the balance. Sambhavami yuge yuge.. Tad aatmaanam srujaamyaham.. Paritraanaaya sadoonan vinashaaya cha dushkrutaan dharma samsthaapanaarthaaya.

The description in puranas might be symbolic and formal.

Some objects and materials baffle an inert and foolish person and pushes him to complete inaction and laziness

The smart and resourceful person uses the same objects and materials and with consummate skill overcomes very difficult and formidable situations . Iron found in the form of a huge lump, if it is placed on water would sink unceremoniously. However, the same iron, when beaten and flattened and is built as a ship or vessel floats on the surface of water and enables all to cross the sea.

येन because of which वस्तुना एव object alone जडः the inert, less endowed, foolish person सीदति remains inactive, is not able to act or work properly तेन एव with that object too प्राज्ञः the smart, knowledgeable person दुर्गाणि तरति overcomes situations which are difficult to negotiate

पिण्डितं shaped as a huge soli lump अयः iron अप्सु in waters मज्जति sinks .. तद् एव that (iron) itself पात्रीकृतं when flattened and shaped as a vessel , boat, ship प्लवते floats

കഴിവും അറിവും ഒട്ടും ഇല്ലാത്ത ജഡതുല്യനായ ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍ ചിത വസ്തുക്കളും ഘട്ടങ്ങളും കണ്ടു ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാനാവാതെ പകച്ചു നില്‍ക്കും . കര്‍മ്മശേഷിയും ഉത്സാഹവും ധാരാളം ഉള്ള വ്യക്തി അതേ വസ്തുക്കളെ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ആ വിഷമഘട്ടം എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ തരണം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ഒരു കട്ടയായി കാണുന്ന ഇരുമ്പ് വെള്ളത്തില്‍ ഇടുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ അത് ഉടനെ അടിത്തട്ടിലേക്ക് മുങ്ങിപ്പോകും. പക്ഷെ അതെ ഇരുമ്പ് അടിച്ചു പരത്തി തോണിയോ കപ്പലോ നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആ യാനം വെള്ളത്തില്‍ പൊങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നു. അത് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കണ്ണെത്താത്ത ദൂരങ്ങളിലേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയ്യാന്‍ സാധിക്കും.

human beings get more unhappy when they see others happy, than when they face discomforts

God has endowed with us the propensity to validate the merits of any issue through comparison of similar objects or occurrences happening around. This instinct is ingrained in us as a protective mechanism. Such observation would give us warnings about dangers and difficulties that might visit us under similar circumstances. But somehow, this tendency to compare grew within us something like a malignancy.. called jealousy. That is a sort of mental evolution containing seeds of destruction. We have to understand that jealousy is a malignancy and we should take steps to remove that bad growth, even if it requires chemotherapy. Living beings normally feel happy when they are given comforts in plenty. They become disturbed when the supplies are scant. That is natural. But human beings get more unhappy when they see others happy, than when they face discomforts. They feel happy when they see others suffer too. That evil mind is unique to the human psyche.

avoid too much of prid over youth and charsma that would vanish with age

तस्मान्न कार्यः सुधिया विचार्य साश्चर्य सौन्दर्य विलास दर्पः।

संसार मोहप्रसरे घनेऽस्मिन् विद्युल्लताविस्फुरितं हि रूपम्॥

In this world of woes submerged under the dark cloud of gloom and illusion, the pride about a person being physically attractive (during his prime stage in life) is very shortlived light the brilliant flashes of lighting appearing from dark clouds for small periods. The man with discretion and wisdom should never feel arrogant and overly proud about his own personal appearance and charisma although he would look wonderfully attractive and vivacious for the time being.

संसार in this world of woes मोह illusion प्रसरे spread घने heavy cloud, heavily clouded अस्मिन् this विद्युत् लता flashes of lighting विस्फुरितं appearing brighly and temporarily हि रूपं indeed is the attractive physical form, attractive physical appearance तस्मात् therefore सुधिया by a sensisble person विचार्य after great contemplation साश्चर्य curiously wonderful सौन्दर्य attractiveness विलास vivacity, activeness दर्पः arrogance न कार्यः should not be entertained.

തസ്മാന്ന കാര്യഃ സുധിയാ വിചാര്യ സാശ്ചര്യ സൌന്ദര്യ വിലാസ ദര്‍പഃ ।

അജ്ഞതയും മിഥ്യാബോധവും നിറഞ്ഞ, അന്ധകാരം കൊടികുത്തി വാഴുന്ന നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍, കാര്‍മേഘങ്ങള്‍ പോലെ ഇരുണ്ടു കൂടി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ആകാശത്തില്‍ വല്ലപ്പോഴും വെട്ടിത്തിളങ്ങുന്ന മിന്നല്‍പ്പിണര്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് തിളങ്ങി വീശി കെട്ടടങ്ങുന്നതു പോലെയാണ് ശാരീരിക സൌന്ദര്യം ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ പ്രസരിപ്പും എല്ലാം വളരെ പരിമിതമായ കാലയളവില്‍ മാത്രം തെളിഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്നതും പിന്നീട് ഇല്ലാതാവുന്നതും.

ആ വസ്തുത ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ബുദ്ധിയും വിവേകവും ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യന്‍ തന്‍റെ  ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ സൌന്ദര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രസരിപ്പിനെക്കുരിച്ചും ഒരു പരിധിക്കപ്പുറം അഹങ്കരിക്കുന്നത് എല്ലായിപ്പോഴും ഒഴിവാക്കേണ്ടതാണ്..

death is a welcome guest when the mission of life is fulfilled

प्रायेणाकृतकृत्यत्वान्मृत्योरुद्विजते नरः।

कृतकृत्याः प्रतीक्षन्ते मृत्युं प्रियमिवातिथिम्॥

prāyeṇākṛtakṛtyatvānmṛtyorudvijate naraḥ|

kṛtakṛtyāḥ pratīkṣante mṛtyuṁ priyamivātithim||

A man who has not been able to accomplish what is expected of him, a man who is not able to discharge the duties assigned to him, is afraid of death. But people who have taken care to discharge their duties faithfully, those who are satisfied about what they have done, would welcome death at any time as if such death is a beloved and honoured guest.

नरः man प्रायेण mostly, verily, in most cases अकृत कृत्यत्वाद् because of non performance of what is expected of him मृत्योः उद्विजते is afraid of death, is anxious about death कृत कृत्याः who have done what should be normally done नराः me मृत्युं death प्रियं अतिथिं beloved, affectionate guest इव like प्रतीक्षन्ते wait for and welcome

തന്‍റെ ചുമതലകള്‍ കാര്യക്ഷമമായും കൃത്യ സമയത്തും നിര്‍വഹിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവില്ലാത്തവന്‍, ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് ചെയ്യാതെ ബാക്കി വയ്ക്കുന്നവന്‍ , എല്ലായിപ്പോഴും മരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വെവലാതിപ്പെടും. പക്ഷെ ചെയ്യേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യേണ്ട സമയത്തും ചെയ്യേണ്ട വിധവും നല്ലവണ്ണം ചെയ്തു തീര്‍ക്കുന്നവര്‍, ഒന്നും ബാക്കി വയ്ക്കാതെയും നീട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകാതെയും കൃത്യ നിര്‍വ്വഹണം നടത്തുന്നവര്‍ മരണത്തെ പ്രിയങ്കരനായ ഒരു അതിഥി എന്ന പോലെ വരവേല്‍ക്കും.

In 1977, I joined my department (the Indian Incometax) as a boy of 22 years.

My boss was at that time 56 years, a brahmin, a man with greatest integrity, but possessing a very nasty temper..

I was a novice and I did not know anything about Incometax, because personally I had no sources of income either for myself or my family. And I was a student of physics.

Everyday, I would present myself before my boss, and he would show all his anger, use some "endearing" words, and hand over some accounts to me for preparing notes. My mind would be blank.. I would approach him every half an hour with some doubt.. and he would tell all the "good words", but would explain to me the technicalities, and he was an excellent taxman, an excellent role model and a great guru.. l became a reasonably good taxman simply because of this great man

And me and my friend steno would sit outside the boss's cabin and since we had nothing else to criticize about him, we would be passing jokes about the boss's change in postures

In retrospect ,afte50 years,I remember with utter gratitudehow great my first boss was , and how grateful I am that he shaped my career and my work ethics !.. Sree Gurubyo namaH..

what we do not share ultimately goes waste

धनेन किं यन्न ददाति नाश्नुते बलेन किं येन रिपून् न बाधते।

What purpose is there for the money accumulated by a person, if he does not share it with others by way of gift and charity and does not spend the money for enjoying the pleasures of life

What is there to be gained by a person by having a lot of physical strength and resources that would make him very powerful, if such power and resources are not applied effectively in defending himself and in scoring victory over enemies ?

What use can be there for great knowledge and erudition gained and possessed by a person if such knowledge does not help him in leading a life in the path of dharma or righteousness

What meaning can be there in the existence of a person if he has not trained himself to have control over his senses and vagaries of his thoughts and if he is not able to maintain such equipoise and pleasant disposition towards one and all throughout his life.

यं धनं which money न is not ददाति spent, given as gift अश्नुते consumed, eaten , uses वा either तेन with that धनेन किं what is the use for such moneyयेन बलेन which strength, which power रिपून् enemies न बाधते does not torment, does not defeat तेन बलेन किं what is the use for that strength/

येन श्रुतेन by which learning, by which collection of knowledge and expertis धर्मं न आचरेत् one is not enabled to spend his life in the righteous path तेन श्रुतेन किं what is the use for such knowledge,learning

यः आत्मा which soul, which person जितेन्द्रियः who has gained control over his organs वशी is ever in control, च न भवति does not remain तेन आत्मना किं what is the use by the existence of such a person

ധനേന കിം യന്ന ദദാതി നാശ്നുതേ ബലേന കിം യേന രിപൂന് ന ബാധതേ|

ശ്രുതേന കിം യേന ന ധര്മമാചരേത് കിമാത്മനാ യോ ന ജിതേന്ദ്രിയോ വശീ||

സ്വയം നല്ലവണ്ണം ചെലവ് ചെയ്തു സ്ന്തോഷത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കാനോ മറ്റുള്ളവരെ സഹായിച്ചു അവരോടൊപ്പം പങ്കുവയ്ക്കാനോ ഉതകാത്ത പണം എത്ര സമ്പാദിച്ചു കൂട്ടിയിട്ടും എന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രയോജനം ഉണ്ടോ ?

ശരീരത്തിനു ശക്തിയും പിന്നെ ഏറെ സഹായികളുടെ പിന്‍ബലവും എല്ലാം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും ആ ബലം ആത്മരക്ഷക്കായും ശത്രുക്കളെ തോല്‍പ്പിക്കാനായും വൈദഗ്ദ്യത്തോടെ പ്രയോഗിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അതുകൊണ്ട് എന്ത് പ്രയോജനം ഉണ്ടാവാനാണ് ?

എത്ര പഠിപ്പും അറിവും ഉണ്ടായാലും അത് നല്ല വിധത്തില്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ധര്‍മ്മത്തിന്‍റെ വഴിയില്‍ നെരോടും നേറിയോടും ജീവിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റിയില്ല എങ്കില്‍ അത്തരം ജ്ഞാനം കൊണ്ട് എന്ത് നേട്ടമാണ് ഉള്ളത്?

ആത്മനിയന്ത്രണം, സ്വന്തം ചിന്തകളിലും പ്രവൃത്തികളിയും തികഞ്ഞ യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യബോധം നിലനിര്‍ത്തുക, വകതിരിവും ശാന്തതയും നിറഞ്ഞ ജീവിതചര്യ സ്വായത്തമാക്കുക.. ഇപ്രകാരം ജീവിതം നയിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ഒരാള്‍ ഒരു വ്യക്തിയാണെന്ന് കരുതി ജീവിക്കുന്നതില്‍ തന്നെ എന്തെങ്കിലും അര്‍ത്ഥം ഉണ്ടോ ?

महतां यदेव मूर्धासु तद् एव नीचस्तृणाय मन्यते।

लिङ्गं प्रणमति बुधः काकः पुनर् आसनीकुरुते॥

People who command respect in society and are of very high integrity and repute treat some objects with great respect, giving them so much of importance and placind them at the top of their heads. However, lowly people treat these very same objects with scant respect as if they are mere pieces of dry grass

Learned and devout people fall in supplication in front of an idol of Shiva in the form of a linga, but a crow would just sit atop that linga as if it is merely its seat.

यद् एव which aclone महतां of respected, great men मूर्धासु on the head वर्तते is place तद् एव that itself नीचः तृणाय मन्यते consider worthless as a piece of grass

बुधः the wise man लिङ्गं the idol of Shiva, Shivaling प्रणमति humbly falls in front of, prostrates पुनः again काकः the crow तं that आसनीकुरुते makes it merely its seat

മഹതാം യദേവ മൂര്‍ദ്ധാസു തദ് ഏവ നീചസ്തൃണായ മന്യതേ|

ലിങ്ഗം പ്രണമതി ബുധഃ കാകഃ പുനര്‍ ആസനീകുരുതേ||

അറിവും അന്തസ്സും സമൂഹത്തില്‍ നിലയും വിലയും ഉള്ള ആളുകള്‍ ഏറെ മൂല്യമുല്ലതായി കാണുകയും ശിരസ്സില്‍ വഹിച്ചു ബഹുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന വസ്തുക്കളെ തരം താണ നീചന്മാര്‍ പുല്ലുപോലെ വിലയില്ലാത്തതായി കാണുന്നു.

ഭക്തന്മാരായ സജ്ജനങ്ങള്‍ ശിവലിംഗം കാണുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനു മുന്നില്‍ വീണു നമസ്കരിച്ചു പൂജിക്കുന്നു. അതേസമയം ഒരു കാക്ക അതെ ലിഗം തന്നെ തന്റെ ഇരിപ്പിടമാണെന്ന് കരുതി അതിന്‍റെ ശരസ്സില്‍ കയറി ഇരിക്കുന്നു.

The hand would not hesitate to touch a burning flame. However, the eye would not tolerate ae tiny specks of dust floating in the air.

उज्जहात्यण्वपि पापं साधुर् असाधुस्तु नो महीयोऽपि।

स्पर्शति करोऽग्निशिखां अपि नयनं तु रजोऽपि न क्षमते॥

ujjahātyaṇvapi pāpaṁ sādhuar asādhustu no mahīyo'pi|

sparśati karo'gniśikhāṁ api nayanaṁ tu rajo'pi na kṣamate||

A noble and kind person would avoid even very minor sins and would attempt to make amends for all possible erroneous actions. However the crude ruffian would not care about even the most sinful activities.

The hand would not hesitate even to touch a burning flame. However, the eye would not tolerate even the tiny specks of dust floating in the air.

The ruffians who would not mind perpetrating any sort of cruelty are here compared with the hands which are capable of performing crude activities. The noble who would feel utterly miserable even on the face of minor sins are compared to the eyes, as the eyes are very sensitive and could not tolerate even small pieces of dust falling on them.

साधुः the noble person अणु minute particle, minute quantity अपि even पापं sins, evil activities उज्जहाति avoid, steer clear of, destroy असाधुः the evil minded person तु on the other hand महीयः even greatest, most grave and serious अपि to पापं sin न उज्जहाति does not avoid, does not attempt to destroy

करः the hand अग्निशिखां the burning flame अपि even स्पर्शति touches नयनं the तु at the same time रजः tiny dust floating in the atmosphere अपि even न क्षमते does not bear, does not tolerate

ഉജ്ജഹാത്യണ്വപി പാപം സാധുര്‍ അസാധുസ്തു നോ മഹീയോഽപി|

സ്പര്‍ശതി കരോഽഗ്നിശിഖാം അപി നയനം തു രജോഽപി ന ക്ഷമതേ||

അന്തസ്സും സ്വഭാവശുദ്ധിയും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തി വളരെ നിസ്സാരങ്ങളായ തെറ്റുകളും കൃത്യവിലോപങ്ങളും സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് പോലും ഒഴിവാക്കും. തെറ്റുകള്‍ ഇല്ലാതാക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കും. പക്ഷെ ദുഷ്ടന് എന്ത് തെറ്റും കുറ്റവും എപ്പോഴും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുവാന്‍ ഒരു മടിയുമില്ല.

നമ്മുടെ കയ്യ് കത്തുന്ന തീയിനെ പോലും തൊടാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കും. പക്ഷെ കണ്ണ് കാറ്റില്‍ പാറി നടക്കുന്ന ചെറിയ പൊടികള്‍ തട്ടിയാല്‍ പോലും അത് സഹിക്കുകയില്ല.

എന്ത് ക്രൂരത കാണിച്ചാലും അതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒരു പശ്ചാത്താപവും മനസ്സില്‍ ഉണ്ടാവാത്ത ദുഷ്ടന്മാരെ എത്ര കടുപ്പം കൂടിയ കാര്യങ്ങളും ചെയ്യാന്‍ തയാറായി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന കൈകളോടു താരതമ്യം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. അതെ സമയം വളരെ നിസ്സാരങ്ങളായ തെറ്റുകള്‍ സംഭവിച്ചാല്‍ പോലും വളരെ വിഷമിക്കുന്ന നല്ല മനുഷ്യരെ ഏറെ ലോലങ്ങളും ഒത്തിരി സംവേദനക്ഷമതയുള്ളവയും ആയ കണ്ണുകളോട് ഉപമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഇവിടെ മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ കൈകള്‍ ദുഷ്ടന്മാര്‍ ആണെന്ന് കരുതേണ്ട ആവശ്യമില്ല . ഈ സന്ദര്‍ഭത്തില്‍ അവയുടെ സഹനശക്തി മാത്രം ഉദാഹരണമായി കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു

This is what Vidura tells Lord Krishna.. The occasion is when the Lord is on a visit to Hastinapura as an envoy to Pandavas. The Lord Stays overnight at the residence of Vidura. This statement comes during a conversation between Vidura and Krishna

Oh Krishna, the Slayer of the demon Madhu, I have to submit that a sensible person should never utter even a single word, not to speak of giving long lectures or sermons, in places where the people who are likely to listen to the words would treat very valuable and meaningful words and bad and useless banter too with equal indifference. It is just like giving a musical concert for the pleasure and enjoyment of a deaf person.

मधुसूदन Oh Krishna, यत्र where सूक्तं great, meaningful words दुरुक्तं empty, useless words वा either बधिरेषु deaf person गायन song इव like समं equal स्यात् be प्राज्ञः a learned person, a sensible person तत्र there न प्रलपेत् should not talk, should not waste his words

മഹാഭാരതേ ഉദ്യോഗ പര്‍വ്വം ൯൦ ൦൧൨ സൂക്തിരത്നാകരേ

വിദുരന്‍ ഭഗവാന്‍ കൃഷ്ണനോടു പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകള്‍ ആണിത്. ഭഗവാന്‍ പാണ്ഡവരുടെ ദൂതനായി അവര്‍ക്കുവേണ്ടി കൌരവ സഭയില്‍ വാദിക്കുവാന്‍ ഹസ്തിനപുരത്തില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. വിദുരന്‍റെ ആതിഥ്യം സ്വീകരിച്ചു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഗൃഹത്തില്‍ രാത്രി പാര്‍ക്കുകയാണ് കൃഷ്ണന്‍. ഭഗവാനോടുള്ള സംഭാഷനത്തിന്നിടയില്‍ വിദുരന്‍ ഉണര്ത്തിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ വചനം

“കൃഷ്ണ, മധുസൂദന, വിവരവും തരവും അന്തസ്സും ഉള്ള ഒരു വ്യക്തി എത്ര നല്ല വാക്കുകള്‍ കേട്ടാലും എന്ത് ചീത്തയായതും ദുഷിച്ചതും ആയ വാക്കുകള്‍ കേട്ടാലും കേള്‍വിക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ഭാവഭേദം ഉണ്ടാവുകയോ അത്തരം വാക്കുകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് അവര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു പ്രയോജനം ഉണ്ടാവുകയോ ചെയ്യുകയില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അത്തരം വ്യക്തികളോടോ അത്തരം സഭകളിലോ ഒരിക്കലും സംസാരിക്കരുത്. അത്തരം വ്യക്തികള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി തന്റെ സമയവും അറിവും വാക്കുകളും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പാഴാക്കി കളയരുത്. അത്തരം സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും ഉപദേശങ്ങളും കേള്‍വി ശക്തി ഒട്ടും ഇല്ലാത്ത ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി ഗാനം ആലപിക്കുന്നത് പോലെയാണ്. “

never act in a rash manner, they never act violently

न पण्डिताः साहसिका भवन्ति श्रुत्वा पुनस्ते तुलयन्त्यसत्यम्।/तुलयन्ति तत्त्वं

ततः समादाय समाचरन्ति स्वार्थांश्च कुर्वन्ति परस्य चार्थान्॥

सर्वज्ञसोमेश्वरस्य सूक्तिरत्नाकरे

na paṇḍitāḥ sāhasikā bhavanti śrutvā punaste tulayantyasatyam|

tataḥ samādāya samācaranti svārthāṁśca kurvanti parasya cārthān||

sarvajñasomesvarasy sūktiratnākare

The learned and mature persons would never act in a rash manner, they never act violently. When a problem arises or when a solution has to be found, they listen to all the facts and consider the issue thoroughly. They evaluate the merits of the issue to see whether there is any fallacy or untruth involved and also after consider the issue in great detail from all possible angles. They make up their minds about the course of action to be followed in solving the problem and then take necessary action. While solving a problem or executing a project they show the same sincerity and meticulousness treating even the problems of others as if they are their own.

पण्डिताः the learned person साहसिकाःrash inconsiderate brutal violemt न भवन्ति. Are never ते they पुनःagain श्रुत्वा having considered , having heard असत्यं lack of truth /तत्त्वं the underlying facts तुलयन्ति evaluate

ततः from there समादाय having made up their mind, having considered everything and then deciding समाचरन्ति act , take decision च too परस्य of others अर्थान् purposes, desires स्वार्थान् as if their own aim and purpose कुर्वन्ति च convert too.

ന പണ്ഡിതാഃ സാഹസികാ ഭവന്തി ശ്രുത്വാ പുനസ്തേ തുലയന്ത്യസത്യം।/തുലയന്തിതത്ത്വം

തതഃ സമാദായ സമാചരന്തി സ്വാർത്ഥാൻശ്ച കുര്‍വന്തി പരസ്യ ചാർത്ഥാൻ॥

സര്‍വജ്ഞസോമേശ്വരസ്യ സൂക്തിരത്നാകരേ

അറിവും വിവേകവും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു പ്രശ്നം അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആണെങ്കിലും, ഒരു പദ്ധതി നടപ്പില്‍ വരുത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ആനെങ്കിലും തിടുക്കമോ അതിരുവീട്ട സാഹസികതയോ പ്രദര്ഷിപ്പിക്കുകയില്ല. ഒരു പ്രശ്നത്തിനു പരിഹാരം തേടേണ്ട അവസരം ഉദിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ അതിന്റെ എല്ലാ വശവും കേള്‍ക്കും, പഠിക്കും, വിശകലനം ചെയ്യും. അപ്രകാരം വിശകലനം ചെയ്ത് ഒരു കാര്യത്തിന്റെ ആഴവും പരപ്പും എല്ലാ വശത്തുനിന്നും ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ട്, എല്ലാ സാധ്യതകളും കൂലംകഷമായി പരിഗണിച്ച് നെല്ലും പതിരും തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു. അത്തരം പരിഗണയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം പ്രശ്നത്തെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കാനും പ്രശ്നത്തിനു പരിഹാരം കണ്ടെത്തുവാനും ഉള്ള വഴികള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി മുന്നോട്ടു പോകുന്നു.

ഒരു കാര്യം ചെയ്യുമ്പോഴോ ഒരു പദ്ധതി നടപ്പില്‍ വരുത്തുമ്പോഴോ അവര്‍ അത് സ്വന്തം താല്പര്യത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ഉള്ളതാണോ അല്ല മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ളതാണോ എന്ന വ്യത്യാസം ഒരിക്കലും നോക്കാറില്ല.

all human attempts have their deep roots in a fistful of grains

शय्या वस्त्रं चन्दनं चारुहास्यं वीणा वाणी सुन्दरी या च नारी।

न भ्राजन्ते क्षुत्पिपासातुराणां सर्वारम्भास्तण्डुलप्रस्थमूलाः॥

śayyā vastraṁ candanaṁ cāruhāsyaṁ vīṇā vāṇī sundarī yā ca nārī|

na bhrājante kṣutpipāsāturāṇāṁ sarvārambhāstaṇḍulaprasthamūlāḥ||

For a person who is tormented by hunger and thirst, cozy bed, attractive clothes, anointing the body with sandal paste, listening to daintily humourous speech, enjoying the music of Veena or the company of beautiful damsels, would have not much appeal. Their concern would be for a handful of grains that would satiate their hunger. Yes, all human attempts have their deep roots in a fistful of grains.

क्षुत् hunger पिपासा thirst आतुराणां those who are afflicted by शय्या (cozy) bed वस्त्रं (flashy)clothes चन्दनं sandal paste चारु हास्यं speech with captivating humour वीणा वाणी music from lute or Veena या सुन्दरी नारी who is a beautiful damsel च too न भ्राजन्ते do not look bright, do not look attractive सर्व all आरम्भाः initiatives, endeavours तण्डुल grain, rice प्रस्थ handful of मूलाः based, depending on हि भवन्ति indeed are

ശയ്യാ വസ്ത്രം ചന്ദനം ചാരുഹാസ്യം വീണാ വാണീ സുന്ദരീ യാ ച നാരീ।

ന ഭ്രാജന്തേ ക്ഷുത്പിപാസാതുരാണാം സര്‍വാരംഭാസ്തണ്ഡുലപ്രസ്ഥമൂലാഃ॥

പട്ടിണിയും ദാഹവും മൂലം ജീവിതം നിലനിര്‍ത്താന്‍ കഴിയാതെ ഉഴലുന്ന ആള്‍ക്ക് സുഖകരമായ കിടക്കയോ, നല്ല ഉടുപ്പുകളോ, ശരീരത്തില്‍ പൂശാനുള്ള ചന്ദനമോ, സന്തോഷവും നേരമ്പോക്കും നല്കുന്ന സംഭാഷണമോ, വീണയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒഴുകുന്ന സംഗീതമോ, സുന്ദരിമാരായ പെണ്‍കൊടികളുമായുള്ള സഹാവാസമോ, ഒന്നും ആകര്‍ഷണീയങ്ങളായി തോന്നുകയില്ല. അയാളുടെ നോട്ടം ഒരു പിടി ധാന്യം എങ്ങിനെയെങ്കിലും സംഘടിപ്പിക്കാമോ എന്നത്തിലും അകത്തു കത്തിക്കയരുന്ന പട്ടിണി എങ്ങിനെ ശമിപ്പിക്കാം എന്ന കാര്യത്തിലും മാത്രം ആയിരിക്കും.

അതെ, മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ എല്ലാ പ്രവൃത്തികളുടെയും, ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളുടെയും എല്ലാം ആണിവേര് ഒരു പിടി ധാന്യത്തില്‍ ഉറച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്നു.

The words and hymns in vedas are not as user- friendly as ordinary Sanskrit verses

While commenting on my translation of a Vedic hymn..one respected friend pointed out that translation of Vedic hymns are too difficult and such hymns may be amenable to different interpretations.

True.

My comments

Mama, there are Sanskrit commentaries on Vedas.. almost on all available mantras.. by the greats like Sayanacharya and some parts by Bhattabhaskara.

Then there are standard lexicons for Vedic terms.. like Niruktam of Yaska.

The words and hymns are not as user- friendly as ordinary Sanskrit verses. True..

But these have been already interpreted by masters over centuries. We can simply follow them

However in the past three centuries or so, some Western scholars tried to interpret Vedas, maybe not with the requisite reverence exhibited by the ancient acharyas. Then some modern scholars and secular saints like Dayananda Saraswathi of Arya Samaj onward, and many English Savvy modern Gurus tried to interpret things often to suit their own convenience.

I am fairly good at languages including English. But basically I am a stickler to traditions..

My canvas may not go beyond Sayana and such old masters.

I do not know whether I am too much conservative, or am I wrong too.

But I never try to open out new paths deviating from traditions.

अप्रियमुक्ताः पुरुषाः प्रयतन्ते द्विगुणमप्रियं वक्तुम्। तस्मादवाच्यमप्रियमप्रियमश्रोतुकामेन॥ ७॥

apriyamuktāḥ puruṣāḥ prayatante dviguṇamapriyaṃ vaktum। tasmādavācyamapriyamapriyamaśrotukāmena॥ 7॥

When someone receives unpleasant and insulting words, he is tempted to return in double, similar bad words. Therefore, one who does not want to receive bad insults and unpleasant words should never use such words in the first place. (Neeti dvishashtikaa)

अप्रियं uncomfortable, destructively critical (words) उक्ताः told पुरुषाः men द्विगुणं of two fold quantity अप्रियं bad, insulting words वक्तुं प्रयतन्ते engage in telling तस्मात् therefore अप्रियं uncomfortable words अश्रोतुकामेन who does not want to hear नरेण by man अप्रियं अवाच्यं should not speak insultingly, should not give out destructive or critical words.

അപ്രിയമുക്താഃ പുരുഷാഃ പ്രയതന്തേ ദ്വിഗുണമപ്രിയം വക്തും। തസ്മാദവാച്യമപ്രിയമപ്രിയമശ്രോതുകാമേന॥ ൭॥

അവഹേളനപരങ്ങളും അധിക്ഷേപിക്കുന്നവയും വിനാശകരമായി വിമര്‍ശിക്കുന്നവയുമായ വാക്കുകള്‍ ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് എതിരായി പ്രയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആ വിമര്‍ശനവും ചീത്ത വാക്കുകളും കേട്ട വ്യക്തി അതുപോലുള്ള ദുഷിച്ച വാക്കുകളും പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും ഇരട്ടിയായി തിരിച്ചു നല്‍കും എന്നത് ഉറപ്പാണ്.

അതുകൊണ്ട് ചീത്തവാക്കുകളും മാരകങ്ങളായ വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങളും കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഒട്ടും ആഗ്രഹം ഇല്ലാത്ത വ്യക്തി ഒരിക്കലും അത്തരം ചീത്ത വാക്കുകള്‍ അങ്ങോട്ട്‌ വച്ച് വിളമ്പരുത്.

Mahabharatam underlines the importance of a good wife in the life of a man

The wife is indeed half of the man

She is his most valuable and dearest friend

She is the root cause, trigger and sustainer of his pursuit of three human purposes, Dharma, the righteous path, artha.. prosperity and fulfilment of his love. Kama

She is ultimately the one who leads him in the path to happy and glorious release from the worldly woes.

If this is what a wife is for the husband, the same idea regarding her husband should apply for the wife too

मनुष्यस्य for a man भार्या his wife अर्धं halfअस्ति is सा she तस्यhis श्रेष्ठतमः most valued, most important सखा friend भवति is भार्या wife त्रिवर्गस्य of the three human aims and purposes.. dharma, artha, kama मूलं root भवति is सा एव she too तरिष्यतः of glorious release from worldly woes मूलं अपि becomes root

പിന്നെ നല്ല ജീവിതവുമായി മുന്നോട്ടു പോകുവാന്‍ സഹായിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കൂട്ടാളി മാത്രമല്ല ആ ജീവിതപാത പിന്നിട്ട് അവസാനം സന്തോഷകരമായ മോക്ഷത്തിലെയ്ക്ക് ഒരാല്‍ എത്തിച്ചേരണം എങ്കില്‍ അതും അയാളുടെ ഭാര്യയുടെ സഹായം കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം ആയിരിക്കും.

Remember, Man is never created to be perfect.

Human mind actually rebels and always jumps up eagerly at any chance to thwart any sort of control. 

 Therefore absolutely balanced control on our impulses is the only regulatory mechanism.

True, a human being has to unwind once in a while .

We can choose to shout our heart out in some empty space or some isolated area where others may not be present or watching.

Normally when we give vent to the accumulated dirt inside us in the shape of pent up negativity, we regain our balance too.

Remember, Man is never created to be perfect.

But man has to be alert enough to choose when and to what extent he should be balanced and also show diligence in unwinding himself too.

The public profile of any person and his real self or persona would always be at variance.

That is life.

Wisdom lies in maintaining the golden balance.. and never permitting oneself to become  the laughing stock of one and all people around.

noble persons are often cruel

इयमुन्नतसत्वशालिनां महतां कोऽपि कठोर चित्तता।

उपकृत्य भवन्ति दूरतः परतः प्रत्युपकार शङ्कया॥

iyamunnatasatvaśālināṁ mahatāṁ ko'pi kaṭhora cittatā|

upakṛtya bhavanti dūrataḥ parataḥ pratyupakāra śaṅkayā|| 

mahaasubhaashita sangrahe 7043 attributed to poet Bharavi (found in some editions of Kiratarjuneeyam)

It is would seem that it is the hard hearted attitude of great person with impeccable integrity that they render great service to one and all but remain anonymous and invisible as if they are afraid that people who have received help from them would insist on returning some favours .

The genuine men of quality would help others without any pomp or show. They would prefer to be anonymous and would never would expect any returns, be it in materials or by way of praise.

Therefore they would withdraw from publicity. The poet speculates that such withdrawal is a sort of hard heartedness of the noble men. It is actually a praise .

उन्नत सत्व शालीनां of people of high integrity महतां noble persons कः अपि which too seems to be कठोर चित्तता hard heartedness इयं this . ते they उपकृत्य after rendering help to others प्रत्युपकार शङ्कया fearing the return of favours and gratitude परतः from others दूरतः भवन्ति remain in distance.

ഇയമുന്നതസത്വശാലിനാം മഹതാം കോഽപി കഠോര ചിത്തതാ।

ഉപകൃത്യ ഭവന്തി ദൂരതഃ പരതഃ പ്രത്യുപകാര ശങ്കയാ॥

അന്തസ്സും ആഭിജാത്യവും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ ക്രൂരന്മാരും ഹൃദയശൂന്യരും ആണെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു.
അവര്‍ മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ട എല്ലാ നന്മകളും സഹായങ്ങളും ചെയ്യുമെങ്കിലും സ്വയം പിന്നണിയില്‍ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു മാറി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്ക് തങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്ത നന്മകള്‍ക്ക് പകരം മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ തിരിച്ചും സഹായം ചെയ്യും എന്ന ഭയവും ആശങ്കയും ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടോ, മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ സഹായമോ അംഗീകാരമോ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച് നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തികള്‍ ചെയ്തതാണ് എന്നുള്ള അര്‍ത്ഥശങ്ക വരുന്നതിനു സാധ്യത ഉള്ളത് കൊണ്ടോ ആയിരിക്കാം അവര്‍ ക്രൂരതയോടെ എന്ന പോലെ പിന്നണിയിലെയ്ക്ക് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു മാറുന്നു.

കവി ക്രൂരത എന്നും വെറുതെ പറയുന്നു എങ്കിലും നല്ലത് ചെയ്തിട്ട് പിന്നണിയില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുക എന്നത് തരമുള്ള വ്യക്തികളുടെ മഹത്വത്തെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

like frogs to the pool and biirds to the riverbank wealth come to the good person

निपानमिव मण्डूकाः सरः पूर्णमिवाण्डजाः ।

शुभकर्मणामायान्ति सहायाश्च धनानि च ॥२४॥

nipānamiva maṇḍūkāḥ saraḥ pūrṇamivāṇḍajāḥ ।

śubhakarmaṇāmāyānti sahāyāśca dhanāni ca ॥24॥

The frogs come and breed in pools and tanks all by themselves, birds land up uninvited on the banks the streams and brooks. In the same way, help from all quarters and much needed wealth too spontaneously reach the person who wishes well for all people around him. .(Sarasamuchayam)

मण्डूकाः frogs निपानं ponds, tanks इव like अण्डजाः birds पूर्णं full सरः lake इव like सहायाश्च help, assistance धनानि money, resources च too शुभ कर्माणं one who does good work, one who is philanthropic आयान्ति come ( spontaneously)

നിപാനമിവ മണ്ഡൂകാഃ സരഃ പൂര്‍ണമിവാണ്ഡജാഃ ।

ശുഭകര്‍മണാമായാന്തി സഹായാശ്ച ധനാനി ച ॥൨൪॥

സാരസമുച്ചയം

കിണറുകളിലേക്കും വെള്ളം കെട്ടിക്കിടക്കുന്ന മറ്റു ഇടങ്ങളിലേക്കും തവളകള്‍ ആരും വിളിക്കാതെ സ്വയം എത്തിച്ചേരും. പക്ഷികള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന തടാകത്തിന്നടുത്തും അതിന്‍റെ പരിസരങ്ങളിലും സ്വയം താവളം അടിക്കും.

അതുപോലെ തന്നെ എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും നന്മയും സമൃദ്ധിയും മാത്രം ആഗ്രഹിച്ച് അതിനായി ആത്മാര്‍ത്ഥമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിക്ക് ആ സേവനത്തിനു വേണ്ടിവരുന്ന സഹായങ്ങളും ധനവും എല്ലാം ആരോടും ആവശ്യപ്പെടാതെ തന്നെ വന്നു ചേര്‍ന്നുകൊള്ളും.

A friend asked whether GOD meant Generater, Observer and Destroyer.

My take on it

That is only a popular concept. It is not given like that in any shastra. or any texts

In Hinduism we have three principal male Gods Brahma the creator Vishnu the ruler and sustainer and Shiva the destroyer.

Of course these three combine as the powerful divine force|

And for the creator great knowledge is necessary..So Brahma's devi is Saraswathi.

For administration or Observation wealth is essential..So vishnu's wife is Lakshmi

and

for destruction immense power is in great use..So Shivas consort is uma the Shakthi.

And Brahmas sons are the great scholars.. Sanatkumaras

Vishnus son is the God of love.. Kamadeva..

And

Shivas Son is the God of War, the Commander in Chief of the Army of Gods.. Subramania Karthikeya.

follow by example

Let us be realistic...

We will subject ourselves to ethics and morals, as long as we are within our comfort levels..

Family ties and ties of friendship and loyalty to Divinity, Nation, Family and community all may persuade us to stretch our comfort into discomforts to a great extent..

But the stetching.. causes strain too..

The elasticity may endure for a time,, but then everything would snap..

Of course, the Indian pshyche tempered with a lot of religion, a religion which is by far toelrant to a fault and is very fair would prepare us for a lot of sacrifice..

There is a basic difference between the theoretical philosophers of the west and our seers and sages who caused our thoughts to evolve. The western giants prepared the theories for a populace or society in general.. but they were not very particular about applying such philosophies to their own lives.. and all said and done, morality and ethics was a matter to be considered and put to effect under compulsion.. or as a matter of publicity and popularity and also convenience..

But Indian philosophy evolved through sages who lived by those principles all along, and exhorted others to follow them only after they ensured the efficacy of their precepts to a reasonably good and fair extent..

Even Krishna, the God himself who gave Bhagavat Gita .. says in Gita itself..

Arjuna.. I have no necessity to follow anything, nor have I any necessity to achieve anything, but still I am living a life compatible with the laws of the world ( which I have myself prescribed).. because I expect others to follow me by example.. and if I make deviations others would err all the more..

Refer to slokas like न मे पार्थ अस्ति कर्तव्यं ..... वर्त एव हि कर्मणि.. यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठः तत्तदेव इतरे जनाः etc. Na me partha asti kartayam...varta eva hi karmani...yadyadaacharati shreshta tattadeva itare janaa.

I just quoted a couple of instances.. but then our ancient laws abound in the precept that we should preach only what we practice..

In fact the duty to follow ethical rules was more binding for the learned brahmins and nobles..

The punishment for transgression of a rule for a Brahmin was often hundred times that would visit the same offence if it is committed by an ignorant man of lesser caste.

Therefore Kantean and Aristotellian precepts seem to have very little persuasive value for a tempered Indian psyche.

But the tragedy is that we are living in a generation where we have almost forgotten all the Golden Rules of our past and we have just imbibed thoroughly half baked western values.. I do not mean western values are half baked,,, but our understanding is half baked

In fact if we consciously try to forget or ignore something or somebody who is bad from our minds the memories cling to us with impossible persistence..

For example when Jaya and Vijaya the doorkeepers of Vaikuntam the abode of Lord Narayana were cursed and ousted from their posts for neglect of duties, they chose the path of expiation by being born as enemies to the Lord in the shape of Hinranyaksha, Hiranyakashipu, Ravana and Kumbhakarna and Shishupala and Dantavaktra..

Their theory was that when one hated the Lord as enemy His thoughts would be present in their minds all their time.. and each of them got killed by the Lord thrice and returned to Vaikuntam to resume their charges..

Had they chosen the path of pious persons for expiation, they would have been forced to spend many more Yugas to return to their Master...

All these, never come back once they have appeared and have passed

आयूंषि यौवनानि ज्वाला शिखिनो रयः स्रवन्तीनाम्।

उच्छ्रयश्च खलानां गता न भूयो निवर्तन्ते॥

The longevity, the productive lifetime of a person

The state of being in the prime of youth,

The flames given out by fire,

The torrential onward flow of water happening in streams and rivers,

The high positions, exalted status enjoyed by evil minded people,

All these, never come back once they have appeared and have passed

आयूंषि long life, productive lifetime यौवनानि youth शिखिनः of the fire ज्वाला flames स्रवन्तीनां of streams, of rivers रायः flow, torrential flow of water खलानां of evil people उच्छ्रयः his status, exalted ranks and positions in society च too गता gone भूयःonce again न निवर्तन्ते do not come back

ആയൂംഷി യൌവനാനി ജ്വാലാ ശിഖിനോ രയഃ സ്രവന്തീനാം।

ഉച്ഛ്രയശ്ച ഖലാനാം ഗതാ ന ഭൂയോ നിവര്‍തന്തേ॥രവിഗുപ്ത ൨൫

ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ ആയുഷ്കാലം,

ഒരാളുടെ ചെറുപ്പവും ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള പ്രസരിപ്പും,

കത്തുന്ന തീയില്‍ നിന്ന് വമിക്കുന്ന ജ്വാലകള്‍,

തോടുകളിലും പുഴകളിലും ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന പെരുവെള്ള പായ്ച്ചില്‍,

തരംതാണ ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥാന മാനങ്ങള്‍

ഇവയെല്ലാം ഒരിക്കല്‍ സംഭവിച്ചു മുന്നോട്ടു പോയ ശേഷം കെട്ടടങ്ങിയാല്‍ പിന്നെ ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചു വരില്ല.

दृष्ट्वा परस्य पीडां प्रीतः खल एव भवति न कुलीनः।

प्रायः स्फुरन्ति समरे लोहमयान्येव शस्त्राणि।

dṛṣṭvā parasya pīḍāṁ prītaḥ khala eva bhavati na kulīnaḥ|

prāyaḥ sphuranti samare lohamayānyeva śastrāṇi|

Only the evil minded person derives great pleasure in inflicting misery on others and watching them suffer. The noble and well-bred person would never feel such happiness

The sharp, potent and killing weapons used in war are made of iron and such base metals ( They are not crafted using noble metals like Gold, Silver )

Here iron is compared to a crude person, and by implication the highly priced metals like gold are compared to noble person. The poet has used the imagery of iron just for comparison contextually. It need not be interpreted to mean that iron is basically a crude and useless metal. That idea is never canvassed here.

परस्य of the opponent, of others पीडां suffering, torture दृष्ट्वा seeing खल evil minded person एव alone प्रीतः happy भवति becomes कुलीनः न not the soft, noble, well born and well bred person

प्रायः verily लोहमयानि made of iron or similar base metals शस्त्राणि weapons एव only समरे in fights, in combats, in battle स्फुरति become prominent and active, engage in active participation

മനസ്സില്‍ നന്മ ഒട്ടും ഇല്ലാത്ത ദുഷ്ടന്മാര്‍ക്ക് മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ ദുഃഖങ്ങളും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും കാണുന്നതിലും അത്തരം യാതനകള്‍ മാട്ടുല്ലവരില്‍ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നത്തിലും ഏറെ താല്പര്യം കാണും. പക്ഷെ നല്ല ഹൃദയവും മനസ്സും ഉള്ളവര്‍, ആഭിജാത്യം നിറഞ്ഞവര്‍, അങ്ങനെയല്ല.

യുദ്ധവും കലഹവും ഉണ്ടാവുമ്പോള്‍ ഇരുമ്പോ അതുപോലുള്ള കടുപ്പം ഏറിയ ലോഹങ്ങളോ കൊണ്ട് നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ ഏറെയധികം ശക്തിയോടെയും മാരകങ്ങളായും ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അവ നാശം വിതയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ( പക്ഷെ അത്തരം ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ മൃദുലങ്ങലായ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണം പോലുള്ള ലോഹങ്ങള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല)

ഇവിടെ കടുപ്പം കൂടിയ ഇരുമ്പ് പോലുള്ള ലോഹങ്ങളെ ദുഷ്ടന്മാരോടു ഉപമിക്കുന്നു. കവിയുടെ ഒരു സാന്ദര്‍ഭികമായ താരതമ്യപഠനം എന്ന അര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ ഇത് കണ്ടാല്‍ മതി. അല്ലാതെ ഇരുമ്പ് ആത്യന്തികമായി ചീത്തയാണെന്ന സന്ദേശം ഒന്നും അല്ല ഇത്
