kaivalyopaniṣad

The primary duty of every wise person is to  study and follow

1. The Vedic Shakha ordained to Him

2.  The Upanishad according to that Shakhaa

3.   Srimad Bhagavat Gita

4.    Vishnu Sahasranamam

5     Sri rudram.. Namakam and Chamakam

6.    The Purusha Sooktham

Each of the above is great beyond words.. Explaining each of that would  take a lot of research..

I am confining to Rudram.. Sri Rudram ..Rudropanishad.. or Shatarudreeyam.

The great Veda.. the Yajurvedam has  one hundred Shakaas or branches (  we know about Shukla, Krishna  etc..)  And in every such branch  the Upanishad of Rudra is  prescribed and partakes a glorious place.  Thus what is gloriously present in all the hundred Sakhas is called Shatarudreeyam.

Sootasamhita  Says.

Just as the branches and the huge foliage remain green and healthy when the roots of a tree is irrigated with water,  when Lord Shiva  the root cause of all divinity is praised through chanting Rudram  all the  gods and divine beings would be pleased.

Therefore, only through the worship of the Lord by chanting Sri Rudram,  one would attain all physical comforts in the world and also the emancipation from worldly bonds when he departs.

Kaivalyopanishad says..

The seeker who chants and digests  Shatarudriyam  or Sri Rudram

He becomes purified as if by a fire sacrifice

He becomes purified by the air

He becomes purified  in his vital Soul.. being cleared of all the blemishes of Karma

The sins of taking intoxicating beverages is removed from him

The sins of causing death and damages to the learned persons gets removed  from him

( Of course this is stated not to justify boozing or brahmahatya.. it is just to underline the greatness of the vedic prayer to the Lord of Lords.. Mahadeva  Shambhu  Shankara..Siva)

NamaH Shivaaya..

rudram,chamakam,rudraikadashini,Lghu Rudram,Maharudram,Atitudram

chanting the whole eleven anuvakams of Srirudram followed by eleven anuvakams of chamakam is called the sadharana rudra japam.

chanting srirudram once followed by the first anuvakam of chamakam, then the whole rudram again followed by the second anuvakam of rudram... thus continuing to chant the rudraprashnam eleven times each time followed by the successive anuvakams of chamakam is called rudraikaadashini
Eleven times rudraikadashini is called Laghu Rudram
Eleven Laghu rudrams constitute a Maharudram
and
Eleven Maharudrams constitue and atirudram..
These are the usual variations in chanting Sri Rudram.. namakam and chamakam..

Mahanyasam ..general outline

Mahanyasam ..general outline
Mahanyasam is the ceremonial invocation of lord shiva and his devatas with vedic mantras ..
the lord is invoked in kumbhas or pitchers filled with sacred water etc and also on some mandalas or cluster of materials suitable for invocation of the divine couple shiva and uma .
. In addition the person who chants rudram and chamakam worshipfully invokes the lord and all other gods in various parts of his own body through various nyasa mantrams
This nyasam alone makes him pure and eligible for chanting Sri Rudram.
Namaskaram to the divine couple uma and shankara is offered.
The lords of cardinal points ashtadigpalakas are invoked in the appropriate direction in waterpots or mandalas etc.
The detailed procedure is prescribed by Bodhayana.
The mantras would consume about one and half hours.
If it is not possible to perform mahanyasam a shortened version Laghunyasam is followed.
Nyasam..the word means reverentially and pointedly placing deities..around the main deity in kumbham .
The chanting of rudram is then done honouring the deity invoked in that kumbham.
In addition the deities are placed or invoked in various parts of the body of the one who chants Sri Rudram through anganyasam karanyasam etc.
For nyasa of each deity elaborate vedic mantras and often tantric beeja mantras are chanted.
This is a general outline.
The subject is too vast.
And the procedure can have minor variation according to local practices.
In our nitya pooja with rudram we perform only laghunyasam

Who has three eyes.. the Sun, the Moon and Fire
Who is the destroyer of the three Cities Tripura
Who is the vanquisher and control of the three fires
Who is the one who burns everything as fire in His form of Rudra when all the creations are destroyed at the end of an eon
Who is having blue colour in his neck because he drank the poison Halahala and that is stuck on this throat
Who is the Vanquisher of the Death or death God himself as proved by him when he kicked Yamaraj to destruction to save the young boy Markandeya
Who is the Lord and Master of everything.. Sarveshvara
Who is ever calm.. the ultimate in the hierarchy of Gods.. the Sadaashiva
Who gives welfare, makes everything well, He is the Shankara.. the lord and Master of Uma
Who is the most powerful lord, the ultimate protector beyond any comparison.. Mahadeva

Note.
All Gods are called only Deva.. only He is fit to be called Mahadeva..

My Master Shankara, may you be pleased to manifest before us appearing from the pericarp or centre of our hearts, in the company of Mother Uma and also surrounded by your entire retinue..

My Master Shankara May the green horses
who equal or even exceed the wind in their speed
and who are aware of your sweet will,
who are extremely strong
and can assume the speed of the mind itself,
may they, accompanied by white horses which carry flags, carry you here..
Om .. Lord Sharva.. the shankara, may you be pleased to come here in great speed to partake in the offerings of havyam.. cooked grains prepared specially for you..

the first is gandha toyam.. or scented fresh gingely oil
the second is panchagavyam
the third is Panchaamrutam
the fourth is melted butter or ghee
the fifth is milk.. cows milk
the sixth is curd.. of cows milk
the seventh is honey
the eigth is the juice crushed out of the sugarcane ( some say even jaggery water will do.. but actually we should use sugarcane juice)
the ninth is the juice extracted from lemon
the tenth is the water from tender coconut
the elevent is scented paste of sandal in liquid form
and after offering abhishekam chanting Sri Rudram eleven times and offering abhisheka to the Lord with the above eleven materials,
finally the lord should be bathed in the fresh water contained in the Kumbham where the lord was invoked and worshipped..

Notes

panchagavyam is the five holy materials derived from the cow... the milk, the curd, the ghee, the urine and the dung

panchaamrutham consists of five tasty things...or amruthams.. the composition vary .. but the general ingredients are pulverised banana fruit, jaggery, ghee, honey, and a little yoghurt or curd In addition dried fruits, raisins, elaichi, nuts etc are also added by some..

for worship of God the Shistacharam is that we use products from cow and not from buffalo or goat.. At least that is what we do in Tamilnadu and Kerala.. Opinions can vary..

NYASAM FOR CHANTING SRIRUDRAM

NYASAM FOR CHANTING SRIRUDRAM
Before chanting any mantram it is the practice that we make prayers and invoke protection of the divine beings on all our limbs and all around us..

This is especially true when we chant the great mantram of Rudram.. Sri Rudram.. the Satarudriyam..
The limbs and positions of the bodies where we invoke the presence of various Deities is prescribed by the Vedas--, in this case by Bodhayana -- as follows.
The process of invoking the deities is called Nyasam.. This process here is called LAGHUNYASAM..

On this day of Shiva.. rather Night of Shiva.. the Shivaratri, abhishekam with water and all fragrant, nutritious and sacred materials is offered to the Lord during all the four Yaamaas..
. starting at 6PM then 9 PM, 12 Midnight and finally 3 AM next day..

Oil, Milk Curd Panchgavyam, Panchamritam, Lemon Juice, Sugarcane Juice, Sandal and Scented Water, Ghee, etc are offered to Him as Abhishekam

The continuous abhishekam is done chanting Sri Rudram of Shatarudreeyam... the holiest of the mantras on the lord of lords Rudra that Vedas can offer..
In fact the mantram starts with a pranam to Rudra..
Om Namo bhagavate Rudraya..
the veda itself offers pranams to that Supreme Lord Rudra..

The chanting of that holy mantra and offering respects to the Lord through that mantra is to be preceded by observation of intense discipline by the chanter..
Bodhyana explains how one should become one with Shiva Himself and meditate on his form as a prelude to the start of the yajna that is chanting and abhishekam to the Lord with SriRudram

One should just fix in himself the faith that the sacred form of Lord Rudra has merged with himself and then start chanting..

The form and various attributes of the lord

He is shining with the blemishless lustre of clear crystal
He is having three eyes. Sun Moon and Fire
He is having five faces... Sadhyojatha, Tatpurusha,Vamadeva, Aghora and Eaashan
He carried River Devi Ganga in his matted locks
He is having ten arms
He has decorated himself with ornaments of splendour

His neck is of dark blue colour
He is having the moon as an ornament
He is wearing a snake at yajnopaveetam or thread across the torso
He is having the skin of a tiger as the upper garment across his body
He is the most respectable God among all gods..
He is ever pleased to grant refuge to all devotees..

He is holding a water pot Kamandalu in one hand
He is holding Akshamaala or rosary in another hand
He is holding a trident Shoolam
He is shining with a fountain of water sprounting from the middle of his matted hair

He has mounted the back of a huge bull Vrishabha
He is having half of His own body occupied by mother Uma
He is floating Himself in Ambrosia.. the Amrutham
He is very peaceful and calm
He is in a state of mind where his is just enjoying all the pleasures of the world

He is surrounded by the lords of all the Cardinal directions.. Indra, Agni, Yama, Niruriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera and Brahma
All the divine beings are offering pranmas to Him
He is the eternal being
He is present in the past present and the future too for ever
He is pure in absolute terms
He is very fixed in his stature and will
He is without any destruction or dimunition
His glory can never be depleted

He is spreading himself all over the universe and everywhere
He is having all the powers of will and control over everything manifest and unmanifest
He is the Rudra.. the one who Cries and one who shouts.. cries in agony and ecstacy
He is the Vishvaroopi.. His shape is that of everything in this universe and everything in this universe just manifests in His form.

The learned man should meditate upon Rudra the Shankara in the above aspects and start the yajnam of offering ablutions to the Lord with Shri Rudram..

That immaculate Linga..

That immaculate Linga..

astokāplutamekamīśamaniśaṁ rudrānuvākānjapan |
dhyāyedīpsitasiddhaye drutapadaṁ vipro'bīṣinceccivam ||

with the jyothi or resplendance which brightens and radiates all over the universe from paataalam to the high skies which consist of the immaculate egg created by Brahma (Brahmanda),
manifesting in the shape of a huge linga of crystal whose head is shining with full moon and amrutha or nectar oozing from it
that one and only Easa the Shankara who is without any destruction and who is floating in griefless ecstacy
द्रुतपदं रुद्रानुवाकान्जपन् chanting the eleven anuvakas of Sri Rudram with words in quick succession
ध्यायेदीप्सितसिद्धये विप्रोऽभिषिञ्चेच्चिवम् the learned person should meditate upon Shiva and offer abhishekam or bath with holy waters to the Lord, so that the worshipper will be granted all that he desires.

The learned devotee who is desirous of being blessed with all that he years for
should chant the anuvakas of Shatarudriya or Srirudram
with the words uttered in quick succession
and meditate upon Shiva

Who is shining forth with the splendour which radiates all over the universe which extends to the farther ends of Brahmanda encompassing the lowest paathaalam to the high skies..

Who is manifesting in the shape of a huge linga of Crystal .(which pervades the whole universe).
the head of the lingam is adorned with the full moon who is oozing forth amrutha or nectar (bathing the whole brahmanda with resplendance)

The one and only Easa the Shankara who is without any comparison ,
who is eternal and without destruction,
and who is floating in the eternal ectacy without any tinge of grief ever

there is one alternate word ध्रुवपदं for द्रुतपदं as seen in some versions of the above sloka which is one of the dhyaana slokas of Lord Shiva chanted at the start of offering Abhishekam to Shiva chanting Srirudram..

ध्रुवपदं the stauts of Dhruva.. meaning unshakeable and very fixed.. or alternately the North (east) direction of Eaashaana.. as the Ashtadikpaala.

the hands that touched Him..

ayam me hasto bhagavAn ayam me bhagavattaraH ayam me vishvbheSaja ayam shivAbhimarshanaH

this hand of mine is the all powerful God itself..
this hand of mine is even more that than the all powerful God .. bhagavan the provider all that is sublime
this hand of mine is the supreme medicine and elixir for all the universe..
this hand of mine is the one which has touched the supreme being that is called Shiva..
this is from Shri Rudram..

The person who worships the Lord with the supreme hymn of Namakam the Rudram concludes that his hand is blessed with the presence of that All Powerful consolidation of Energy that is named Shiva.. and therefore the hand of his who chants the name of Shiva itself becomes Bhagavan, the healer and protector of the universe..

Maybe if a devout chanter of the Name of the Lord Shiva places his hand on something with this solemn statement what he touches should turn sublime..

It is again an article of faith.

the glory of Shatarudriyam

the glory of Shatarudriyam
( Chapter 5 of Yajurvedam)
also popularly known as
Srirudram or Rudraprashnam..
in Praise of Lord Rudra or Shankara the Maheshwara

surāpaḥ svarṇahārī ca rudrajāpī jale sthitaḥ|
sahasraśīrṣajāpī ca mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ||

Even a person who is a drunkard habitually or a person who has committed the grave sin of stealing Gold, would get relieved of all sins if he chants Srirudram or Sahasra Shirashaa ( purusha sooktham) standing in water.

Consuming hooch and stealing gold are treated as two of the five gravest sins in our dharmasaastraas..

kiṁ japena amṛtatvamaśnute
śatarudrīyeṇa
etāni ha vā amṛtasya nāmadheyāni bhavanti etairhavā amṛto bhavati|
yaḥ śatarudreeyamadhīte so'gnipūto bhavati||

The disciple asks Sage Yaajnavalkya..
"By chanting which mantra can one attain immortality?"
Yajnavalkya replies.. By chanting Shatarudreeyam
The names (of Rudra) found in Shatarudriya or Sri Rudram are verily the Ambrosia or Amritam itself .. Through these names the devotee attains eternity, immortality.. amritattwam.
One who learns Shatarudriyam..Sri Rudram shines as if he is purified by fire
(Jabalopanishad)

satataṁ rudrajāpyo'sau parāṁ muktimavāpsyasi||

One who chants Srirudram regularly would attain the ultimate Moksham or liberation.
