misrule, anarchy, rebellion, revolution

arakṣitāraṁ hartāraṁ viloptāramanāyakam|
taṁ vai rājakaliṁ hanyuḥ prajāḥ sannahya nirghṛṇam||
mahābhārate ānuśāsana parvaṇi 61-32
The idea of social unrest and its manifestation into revolutions was praised as a western idea, and calls by the greats like Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesque were praised as harbingers of a new era of man's foray into the era of liberty equality and fraternity.. and the means to achieve them, the Revolution... And French Revolution is presented as the greatest epoch in human history in that direction..
Yes, French Revolution was great indeed.. A landmark in the human progress towards the right and digninty of every human being..
But the call for revoultion.. and even lynching of a king who was not working for the welfare of his subject was found in the age old and revered epic of India, the Mahabharatam, written at least five thousand years ago..
The meaning of the slokam found in Anushasan parva of Mahabharatam is
==========
The people of a country would flock together en masse and finish off a ruler,
who is virtually the embodiment of kali the evil spirit rather than a human being,
if
the ruler fails in his duty of giving protection to his subject, his territory
the ruler is engaged in looting his subjects with unreasonable taxes and levies..
the ruler is loose and decadent in his conduct and is sloth in the correct performance of his duties, and is selfish
the ruler is not able to provide proper leadership and to lead from the front, but allows things to drift..
Any revolution, anywhere in the history of human existence happened for one or many of the abouve reasons..

Dhruva sooktham.. Rigvedam Mandalam 10 sooktham 173

This rigvedic Manthram comes as a benediction to the King of the land and also reflects the hopes expectations of the subjects ... a veritable Magna Carta of Vedic Wisdom..
1. Oh king, we have been blessed to have you as the rule of this nation. Keeping that in mind, become the true protector of all of us. May you be unflinching, unshakable and always stable and correct in all your activities and may you have your reign of righteousness on us, your subjects. May your conduct be in such that all of us, your subjects, would always yearn that you should be our king and may we adore you for ever. May we always desire, “let this king be our ruler for ever”. May this kingdom be in your eternal possession and may it never be taken away or be lost to you. May you never face any dethronement or suffer from any destabilization, and may you never lose the deep affection and goodwill of your subjects.

2. Oh King, may you remain for ever the ruler of this kingdom. May there be no loss of status for you at any time. May there never be any deviation from the righteous path for you. May you remain faithful, determined and unshakable in your virtues—just like a mountain. May you rule over his kingdom with so much stability and welfare just as Indra rules over the heavenly kingdom. May you rule over your kingdom just like heaven. May you discharge you duties without deviating in any way from the path of righteousness.

3. May you, our anointed king, be protected by Indra with eternal stability. May Soma protect you the king so anointed. May all of us, your subjects, talk possessively of you as if you are their most coveted possession. May Brahmanaspathi, the protector of all manthras which bind nature, protect you for our sake
4. May the skies be unshakable and of even nature under your reign. May the earth be unshakable and evenly ever-yielding bounties alone during your reign. May all the mountains around here stay unshakable in shape and quality while you reign. May the peaceful and undisturbed state of the entire universe remain so during your righteous reign. And thus, you the king of ours be the undisputed, unconquered and unshakable leader of all of us.

5. Oh King, may Lord Varuna keep your kingdom stable and undisturbed during your reign. May the ever bountiful Lord Brihaspathi keep your kingdom stable and peaceful during your reign. May the two most powerful gods Indra and Agni keep your kingdom stable and peaceful during your reign.

6. May we offer our sincere and supreme oblations by way of cooked rice and ghee with unwavering care and devotion to Indra and the Gods. May be offer Soma juice with utmost care and devotion to the Gods led by Indra. May Indra and other Gods, having received our humble and devoted offerings, grant us supreme benefits and protection.

You will get what is meant for you

You will get what is meant for you.

A story by Vishnu Sharma in Panchatantram

There lived in a town a businessman named Sagaradatta. His son was never bright in any way, and the fellow was his father’s perennial anxiety. One day the businessman gave some gold coins to the son for starting a business. The junior business magnate, as if he were a scholar, purchased a book for the entire sum. It was just written in that book. "A man will get what is ordained as his due. Even gods cannot prevent the man from acquiring that. So I am neither sad, nor surprised. Whatever is my due, will come to me, and no one can take it away from me'. The enraged father on seeing the youth bringing a book instead of some profit, called him nice names like Idiot and drove him away from his household.

The youth left his home and his town with a heavy heart and reached a metropolis. There someone asked him his name. "You will get what is meant for you." Was the reply.

This was his stock reply to all who cared to talk to him.

Things were happening in the city. One day the princess of the ruler of the city was doing the rounds in the city on a festive occasion. It so happened that a handsome prince came that way, and for the princess it was love at first sight. She sent her maid to the prince to fix up a meeting for the two. The prince was at a loss as to how to enter the harem of the princess. The maid assured that she would leave a long sturdy rope tied to the top of the building and the prince could enter climbing up that rope. The prince agreed, and the princess was duly informed.

Meanwhile the prince had second thoughts. " It is a heinous sin to enter the harem of a friend's daughter, a friends wife, a preceptor's wife, the master's wife, or the wife of the servant… it is equivalent to killing a Brahmin. Why should I commit such a sin and confine myself to sure hell for ever? " So he simply did not come at the appointed time.

Our hero, the son of the businessman was wandering in the streets aimlessly and saw a rope dangling from the royal citadel. Curious, he climbed up the rope and landed up in the Princesses bedroom. She mistook the youth for her lover and extended him all hospitality. They occupied the royal bed also. She was repeatedly asking the silent youth why he was not talking at all. He simply replied. "You will get what is meant for you." The princess then realized that it was not her lover with whom she had spent that night. Angry to the bone, she simply drove him away.

The desolate youth went and sat near a dilapidated temple. Before long, a city police constable came to the temple. The latter had arranged for a rendezvous with a prostitute on that spot at that time and the lady was about to reach soon. He asked, "Who are you?"

"You will get what is meant for you." Was the reply.

To save the situation, the policeman told him. "The temple is deserted. I will show you my house. You can go there and spend the night there. My cot is prepared there for sleep. You can occupy that." The youth obliged readily. He did not know which cot belonged to the policeman and when he entered the cot the policeman's young daughter received him eagerly. In fact, she was expecting her lover to visit her at that time. The darkness of the night did its curious tricks. Finally the girl asked, "Why are you not talking anything to me?"

Again came the reply ""You will get what is meant for you."

Once more, the switching of identity was revealed and the youth was driven away.

By then it was morning, and walking along the street, the youth came across a marriage procession. He followed the procession which led to the house of a very rich merchant of the city. It was the time for marriage of the daughter of the businessman. Right on the moment, a huge rogue elephant got its rut and started running helter-skelter. All the people including the bridegroom and the parents of the bride ran for their lives. The bride could not run. Our youth was also standing there gaping at the elephant, not knowing what to do. Finally, seeing the girl in utter terror, he held her hands tight and told her," Do not fear, I shall protect you".

Then he shouted at the elephant to calm down and go away. For reasons best known only to god, the elephant calmed down and walked away.

People returned and tried to resume the ceremony. But the bride would not accept anybody other than her saviour from the rogue elephant as her husband. Hence, though reluctantly, the marriage between our youth and the daughter of the businessman was consummated.

The next day the youth with his new bride and retinue and gifts following in plenty, reached his father's house. The father was overjoyed.

Meanwhile the ruler of the place had heard about what had happened to his daughter and he also came in search of the youth and after hearing the whole episode, gave her hands in marriage to the youth. The Policeman was also not lagging behind far.

So the lucky youth got three wives and huge wealth just because he followed the dictum.

"You will get what is meant for you."

even the earthworm may spew venom at times

Even the earthworm may spew venom at times

Another story from panchatantram of Vishnusharma

In a kingdom called Vardhamanam, a rich businessman named Danthila lived. Because of his expertise in commerce and also in politics, he was the principal adviser to the ruler of the day. Once he celebrated the marriage of his daughter with all pomp and the VIPs local and abroad, all attended in large numbers. The sweeper in the Royal Palace named Gorambha also attended the marriage. He committed the indiscretion of seating himself among the VIPs and the host was irritated and the menial was ordered to sit elsewhere.
The servant was irritated. It is indeed very difficult for a top bureaucrat to please the boss as well as the subordinates. The insulted Gorambha was biding his time to draw blood.
One early morning, while cleaning the bedroom of the King, quietly, while the Royal incumbent was still asleep, the servant started a soliloquy.
"Danthila the rogue chetty was embracing the queen yesterday, I saw it, I saw it.."
The king woke up and heard this and started questioning the menial repeatedly..
Gorambha was incoherent.. " Your Royal Highness, I was playing dice throughout the night and had some hooch also. I might have blabbered something but I do not remember what I said".
The seeds of suspicion had already been sown. The king brooded over the possibilities in all seriousness . " The minister has free entry to the palace and Gorambha can also go anywhere. It is possible that Gorambha might have watched such a scene. The things that people witness in broad daylight come as flashbacks in their mental screens as if in hallucination when they are in an inebriated condition, and specially when they are deprived of sleep also. And how can one be sure of anything when it is a matter of heart between a man and a woman?"
The king was depressed. From that day onwards his implicit faith in the minister started to wane. A royal edict went round that Dantila need not visit the Royal Palace.
The minister was sad, because he did not know the cause of the Royal displeasure.
He consoled himself, " Some things are basically incompatible.. Play of dice and honesty, patience and snake, philosophy and drunkenness and sustained friendship and the king or the boss. Still I am curious.. I have done nothing against the interests of the boss or his kin."
But as he was standing near the gate of the palace, he overheard Gorambha making sarcastic remarks against him, the erstwhile royal confidant. The minister was sharp enough to divine what has happened and who had carried tales to the King. He thought, " The Royal Servant, even if he is venomous and mean, should be placated." So he invited Gorambha to his place that evening praised him and sought apology for what had happened during the marriage function. Gorambha was wined and dined well and hi hands and bags were filled with costly presents.
It was a very happy Gorambha that had left the chetty’s place that night.
The next day, while cleaning the Royal bedroom in the presence of the sleeping king, the servant talked to himself. " I saw His Majesty eating cucumber while sitting in the toilet, I saw it, I saw it…"
The King heard it and was angry. " What are you raving? I have never done such a thing. Shut up your dirty mouth" Roared the king. Then he thought. The servant was blabbering under the influence of hooch, and sleep deprivation. Then he remembered what the fellow talked about the queen and the minister. He was filled with remorse. He called the minister and praised him and restored to him the royal favour.
The moral is that one has to be always very careful about even the minor satellites near the centre of power.
Even the earthworm may spew venom at times..

be near the centre of power

prāyeṇa bhūmipatayaḥ pramadāḥ latāśca
yatpārśato bhavati tatpariveṣṭayanti||36||
viṣṇuśarmaṇaḥ pañcatantre mitrabhedāt||

This is from a narration of a story in Panchatantram in the mitrabhedha section.
Some very important persons always are influenced by the immediate presence, and advise of subordinates in close proximity .. this sort of advice can come from persons among the personal servants of a king or a top bureaucrat, maybe, a household servant or a personal launderer or a barber or a gatekeeper or an arrogant wife or an imbecile progeny. However uneducated and unsuitable they are they  influence him with some remarks or advice.   As a generalization, the poet says, the kings, ladies and the creepers always simply grow their tendrils and climb up the things which are very near them.

The working of kitchen cabinets in the centres of power are landmarks in the history and growth of any civilization.  The great Prince Rama was denied the kingship by Dasartaha sitting in the harem of Kaikeyi, his favourite wife  Duryodhana went by the advice of his maternal uncle and ubiquitous companion Sakuni. These are all stories.  What happened during contemporary landmarks in history  and who wielded the real power are  well known...the coterie or kitchen cabinet.  Many a times the king or boss signs papers presented to him at home virtually ensuring that he is hanging himself and his image and often the kingdom or organisation he heads  is taking an abysmal dip.  Instead of being born as a bureaucrat at middle manager lever, it would be more comfortable if one is born as the pet dog of the top boss.
Strangely enough the middle chap when he climbs up the ladder creates his own coterie and old friends and well-wishers are relegated to the dustbin.
