the lover sees every action of his lady love as prodded by her romantic vibes for him...

I quote from Abhijnana Shakuntalam.

mā gā ityuparudhdayā yadapi sā sāsūyamuktā sakhī
sarvaṃ tatkila matparāyaṇamaho kāmī svatāṃ paśyati ॥

The attractive movements of the eyes of Shakuntala due to the natural tenderness, the slow gait because of the heaviness of the attractive parts of the body, the chance glance while going away after a meeting, all these meant to Dushyanta as stemming out of special romantic feelings to him that he attributed to Shakuntala in his fertile imagination whereas such gestures happened only in the normal course without reference to him..
and the poet remarks.. Kaamee swataam pashyati.. the lover sees every action of his lady love as prodded by her romantic vibes for him...
Here you are imagining many statements as referring to you...

death is definite and is natural too. No one can prevent it.

For every living being, death is definite and is natural too. No one can prevent it. But there is no guarantee about how long there will be life in the body. Life may cease today, tomorrow or at any time. Moreover, after a person is dead, there is no guarantee that he will be born again. Therefore every moment of living existence is a bonanza for us. So we have to celebrate life. However, as death is an inevitable process, it is also futile to grieve over death (Raghuvamsham 8/87)

A beautiful slokam from Abhijnaana Shakuntalam, the magnum opus drama of Great Kalidasa. This description appears in the Fourth Act

It would appear that the full moon all through the bright night traverses the sky. He is shedding its brilliant rays on the surface of the earth. As the night comes to a close and the day is dawning, the moon looks dull as if he has distributed all its bright rays and has very little glow left in him. In addition, the exhausted moon sinks into the southern seas. Kalidasa wonders- when a person, however valorous and powerful he is, if he rises too much upwards is sure to sink into abysmal depths ultimately. The greater the rise, the steeper the slide and fall.

The meaning of the slokam

See, this glorious moon appeared first in all his brilliance, atop the tallest Northern Mountain, Sumeru, placing his feet firmly on the topmost peak of the leader of the mountains, the golden mountain, Mahameru.

He started his journey through the middle world of Lord Vishnu, the sky, covering the air and atmosphere, and in his regal journey he distributed his brilliant rays in profusion and lightest up the earth below, all through the night, all the time proceeding towards the south.

The night is ending and another day is dawning, and the moon has reached near the southern seas. After distributing all his light and energy during his long journey, now the moon looks jaded with very few rays left with him.

In this state, he sinks into the southern seas.

The moon started in glory. Rose to greater glory and distributed almost all he possessed. He reached the peak of his brilliance. Reached dizzy heights. Then the fall started. He became pale and finally sank into the sea.

Even the best among people, who climb up to dizzy heights, can ever expect abysmal falls

The fall too is likely to be steeper when the rise is too high.

Indeed a very beautiful imagery by the greatest poet ever, Kalidasa.

In the fourth Act of Kalidasa’s Shakuntalam, we come across an affectionate father, Sage Kanva, his heart brimming and overflowing with love for his cute daughter Shakuntala. Kanva is grappling with the depressive pangs of separation, and at the same time he has to come to terms with realities of life and therefore he has no option left other than sending the girl to king Dushyantha who has married her. He is bidding her adieu with affection and sense of hour. He makes the following remarks.

“Indeed, we cannot forget the fact that we are bringing up every female child with affection beyond measure merely to hand her over as the prized possession of a suitable groom.

Shakuntala is married and therefore her right place is in the company of her husband. Today I am sending her away with all honour expecting her to join the man who has married her. The core of myself, my conscience is full with huge satisfaction of a fulfilled person who has handed over without blemish a valuable treasure that fate presented to me for temporary safekeeping.”

Everyone can understand that the wizened patriarch is burning within himself with grief. However, he is exhibiting utmost maturity and composure. Every father or male sibling can understand and empathize.

lamp lit from another lamp of identical qualities

I remember Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsham
Kalidasa’s description of Prince Aja as an exact foil of his father Raghu..
roopam tadojaswi tadeva veeryam tadeva naisargikam unnatatwam,
na kaaranaat swaad bibhide kumaaraH pravarttito deepa iva pradeepaat
(Raghuvamsham 5-37)

The vibrant young man Aja did have the same attractive physical features of his father Raghu.
He possessed the same valour and strength.
He possessed the same qualities of intrinsic tallness in physique and in mind.
The son did not differ from his father in any manner.
It was as if the son was just a lamp lit from another lamp of identical qualities.
Lucky is the man who has children who equal him.
Moreover, blessed is the one if the children excel him.

Throughout this young one’s life, you would always feed him with green tender ears of Shyamaka grass,

so'yam na putrakṛtakaḥ padavīṁ mṛgaste|
This is a slokam from the Fourth Act of Abhijnaanashaakuntalam, the monumental Drama of Mahakavi Kalidasa
Shakuntala and the hermitage of Kanva are preparing themselves for the inevitable departure of the pregnant Shakuntala to the palace of her husband Dushyanta..
The sage Kanva, the recluse foster father of the young girl could not help shedding tears of separation..
All inmates also silently bid her a tearful farewell..
Even the animals and plants of the hermitage could not brook the idea of this lovely girl leaving them..
A young deer, just stands before her blocking her way..
Kanva says
”You see, this young deer is refusing to move away from your path and blocking your departure..
When this young one got its lips injured through sharp darbha grasses while grazing, you would tend the injuries by smearing oil of ingudi with your soothing hands over the injuries..
Throughout this young one’s life, you would always feed him with green tender ears of Shyamaka grass, and he has grown up eating that alone..
He was just like a son to you.
How can he let you go?”
Kalidasa's poignant depiction of love among all beings.. and especially those who live in the company of pristince nature in all innocence.. should send a great message.
We hardly love anyone to day…
We hardly care for plans and animals..
We can see the plants and animals only as source of food, nothing more..
This is the reason why there is only one Shakuntala,
and there is only one Kalidasa
For Sanskrit lovers

exchange seven words

a friendship between two nice people, according to Indian culture can happen if the two exchange seven words,, (it is not mentioned whether it is spoken or written words) or alternately taking seven steps together..
This is significance of Sapthapadi in marriage..
Kalidasa in Kumarasambhavam endorses this, when Siva in the Guise of a Brahmachari tells Uma..
yatah sataam sannatagaatri sangatham maneeshibhiH saaptapadeenam uchyate..
Meaning.. Oh damsel of very slim and well shaped body,
it is said by the wise people that the friendship between nice people is established by conversation of even just seven words.."(saaptapadeenam can mean seven steps by foot too, that is walking together just seven feet)

Who can have whole of his lifetime filled with comfort and nothing but comfort? And whose life can always be filled with misery alone? Comforts and misery comes and go alternately.. just like the parts of rim of a wheel of a cart rubbing with the ground and then moving to the top and repeating this again as it rolls on.
Even astrologers say. No one can be continuously happy for more than thirty years at a stretch. Similarly he cannot be unhappy too for such a long period.

it is the duty that special respect should be given to persons who are manifestly venerable

Our body made of skin, flesh and bones and irrigated by blood, is just a sort of spacesuit for the survival of the inner core, maybe the soul, on this earth.. The dress over that worn by us is only like paint or whitewash.. So the outward dress might not matter much,
But Kalidasa said in kumarasambhavam..
Bhavanthi saamyepi nivishtachetasaam vapurvishesheshwathigouravaaH KriyaaH

Physical fitness comes first

Physical fitness comes first
Uma the Patvathi is doing penance in a forest in Himalayas to gain Shiva as her husband.
Shiva visits the place to test her.
He has disguised himself as a young brahmachari.
Parvathi receives him with honours due to such a personage.
He is enquiring about her welfare.

Are the waters here suited well for your ritualistic bath?
Are you doing penance within the limits of physical strength you have?
Remember , the body (its fitness) is the foremost requirement for achieving the merits through spiritual practices.

bhāratam cekṣudaṇḍaṁ ca kalānāthaṁ ca varṇaya|
kālidāsakavir brūte pratiparvarasāvaham||
Kalidasa was asked to describe the greatness of Mabhabharatham, A stalk of sugarcane and the Moon..
Kalidasa replied.. all the three are sweet and tasty in each parva..
The chapters in Mahabharatham are generally classified as parvas.. Each parva is great beyond words.
Sugarcane stalk has many joints each is called a parva.. Joint to joint everywhere it is sweet.
The moon waxes and wanes from new moon to full moon and back. Each such fortnight is called parva.. Moon is beautiful from start of parva to the end of parva and back.
Here the versatility of Sanskrit language is underlined.. The word Parva conveys so many meanings.
You must not ask in what Kavyam Kalidasa has said it.
It is only an anecdote.. You can mention the name of any great poet in place of Kalidasa.

musings 238

Saw some hot debate and vehement assertion about the shape of the Divine being..
My views on the issue..
It is rather futile to interpret the greatness of the Divine.. Kalidasa Said in Kumarasambhavam that the shape of the one who has assumed his presence everywhere in the Universe is not possible...
-------------
may I be permitted to quote from what I wrote elsewhere.
tan me manaH Shivasankalpamasthu ..
Some fond thoughts about the supreme greatness of Lord Siva Crosses my mind on the sivaratri eve.
." He is having nothing, as we could see that he sets out with a begging bowl,
but he is the source of all wealth and prosperity in the universe,
he is the master of the three worlds but neither his parentage nor his permanent residence could be certified
,He is of very fearful form they say but he is the meekest of the meekt, Shiva...there is nobody who could divine the reality of this Pinakapani."..
Kalidasa again says,
" vibooshnodhbaasi pinadhdha bogi vaa gajaajinaalambi dukoola dhari vaa kapali vaa syat adhava indusekharam, na visvamooheh avadhaaryathey vapuh-"-
vibhūṣaṇodbhāsi pinaddhabhogi vā gajājinālambi dukūladhāri vā|
kapāli vā syādathavenduśekharam na viśvamūrteravadhāryate vapuḥ||
"He is adorned in priceless ornaments sometimes,
but at other times he is just standing there with snakes tied around every part of his body as ornaments,
he uses the skin of a just killed elephant to cover his body at times, but he is often adorned in silk clothes also,
He goes around with a skull in hand for begging often but at other times the moon, the source of all aiswarya in its crescent form adorns his matted hair... how can we understand the physical make up of this viswamoorthy?
Amongst brhamins smaarthas predominate and in sankapa everywhere in India, whether it is siva pooja or vishnupooja, yaga or yagna, may be even a cremation of a sraadha we start the sankalpa with "mamopatha samastha durithakshaya dwaaraa sree Parameswara preethyartham..
" ममोपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थम्
mamopātta samasta duritakṣayadvārā śrī parameśvara prītyartham
so we do everthing in his name.
Thinking of it, we are simply dependent on Siva from the moment we are born to our last breath and beyond that.
NAMAH SIVAYA

Lingam itself means something which is concealed or which is difficult to understand..
Man cannot definitely give shape to something he cannot conceive..
So he gave an assumed shape..
Maybe a sphere or a cylinder with a sphere on the flat edges was an easy form to conceive.. so he presumed the deity in that form..
The Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas are honest..
They would record only what they have observed..
So we can be sure that they saw and felt the presence of Shiva in that shape.. and started worship of the lingam.
The divine being is either manifesting in all shapes or in reality he is having no shape..
In rudram we say.. viroopebhyo vishvaroopebhyaH cha namo..विरूपेभ्यो विश्वरूपेभ्यः चा नम pranams to the ones ( the eleven rudras) with no shape and the ones with the entire universe as their shape..
elsewhere in rudram we say.. yo rudro vishvaa bhuvanaa aavivesha..यो रुद्रो विश्वा भुवनाविवेश that rudra who entered or manifested in everything on earth and the universe..
Let me ask this question
Who are we to explain the shape of the Supreme Being.. be it Hindus or others?
Of course respectful reference to the divine shape can be understood even if such interpretations are shortsighted..
After all He is present in everything.. so any shape is His shape
But assertion and hot debate on the shape of God.. is just arrogance, nonsense and blashphemy..

A description about the sterling personal qualities of the monarch of the clan of Raghu as given by Kalidas in the first Chapter of his monumental work Raghuvamsam.
The monarch of the Raghu clan was possessing great knowledge but was rather silent and never deemed it fit to exhibit or flaunt such knowledge
He was extremely strong and valorous but was very patient and tolerant
He was very generous but was completely averse to self-praise and publicity about such munificence
Usually knowledgeable people lose no opportunity to show off their knowledge through words and actions. People who are strong and sturdy become impatient and irritated even if they face the slightest discomfiture. People who are charitably inclined usually manage to grab every opportunity to attract limelight and accolades.
However knowledge and silence, strength and patience and munificence and reluctance towards publicity, the mutually contradictory traits gelled together in him as if they were uterine brothers.

For a seeker of knowledge there is no place for too much of self assuredness and for a presumption that the subject he is learning is very simple, and that he is too bright..
This is all the more important in study of the great classical language Sanskrit..
We tend to forget our limitations and never fail to make very patronizing comments especially in social media about the shortcomings of others, fully knowing that we are mostly empty drums..
In the traditional system of education the disciple never dared to question his preceptor..
Vain and excessive self assuredness was absent in our great predecessors..
Kalidasa, while introducing Raghuvamsa Mahakavyam says..
mandaḥ kaviyaśaḥ prārthī gamiṣyāmyupahāsyatām|
prāṁśulabhy phale lobhāt udbāhuriva vāmanaḥ||
"An ignoramus as I am (Kalidasa calls himself so), and seeking the glory to be praised as a poet, I am exposing myself to the ridicule of the learned people (by trying my hands in creating a history of the great Raghuvamsam). My position is nothing different from that of a dwarf who stands under a tall tree laden with fruits and jumping up with hands held upwards,, but the fruits could be had only by really tall people. "
Again in the Masterly Creation, the poet's Magnum Opurs Abhijnaana Shakuntalam, Kalidaasa says..
ā paritoṣād viduṣāṁ na sādhu manye prayogavijñānaṁ|
balavadapi śikṣitānāṁ ātmanyapratyayaṁ cetaḥ||
"I do not consider my capacity to write and present a drama as anything good unless the learned men are completely happy after watching such presentation..
Even for the most learned men, their minds are not very confident when it comes to the level to which they have been equipped as scholars.."
My thoughts were triggered when I was just going through the celebrated text" Laghupaanineeyam" by Shri A R Rajaraja Varma..
This book is a standard text on Sanskrit Grammar and other essential aspects, a standard text followed in Sanskrit Departments of many great temples of knowledge, for more than 130 years..
He says, in the preface of the book, while seeking the pardon of the readers for the many errors in ideas, spellings, printing, and so on..
atyūrjitaṁ vastu calaṁ ca cittamataḥ pramādaḥ sulabhaḥ praṇetuḥ||
pramādinau lekhakamudrakau ca kvātyantikī pustaka te viśuddhiḥ|
"The subject matter is very powerful and deep, the mind is fickle, the author is capable of forgetfulness and unintentional errors, the editor, copywriter, typesetter and the printer are also capable of committing such errors, so, my dear book, how can there be absolute purity for you.?"
The greatness of the really great people lies in the fact that they admit their limitations even better than flaunting their erudition..

Lore of Rings

An elaborate discussion on rings is in progress among the veterans ..
All I could think up of rings was that
Just two instances of the importance of Ring as a connectives in matrimony struck my mind
First.. In Ramayanam..Sundarakaandam.. A new lease of life is given to Sita when Hanumanji delivers the Signet Ring of Rama to Sita in captivity in Ravanas Lanka..
Second.. In Abhijnaana Shaakuntalam of Kalidasa..The only evidence for the marriage of Shakuntala with Dushyanta is a ring given by the King to her..This ring is lost by her and she has to lose her conjugal rights and bear the stigma of illicity pregnancy, and the matter is set right enabling the union of the King and the hermit girl only when the lost ring is regained..
It is said that some proud warriors and kings kept diamond rings mainly because they could swallow the diamond piece and die easily if they are defeated and captured or land up in similar circumstances..
There is said to be another tradition in India till a few centuries ago that nubile damsels wore rings which are surrendered to the man who possess them bodily for the first time..
And in the celebrated play Mudraaraakshasam of Vishaakhadatta,
Chanakya causes the signet ring of the Prime Minister of Nandas,, Rakshasa, and uses the marks on it to forge documents which ultimately forced Minister Rakshasa to capitulate before Chandragupta Maurya and accept the Prime Ministership under the new monarch..
The play is a classic .
And of course there is the story of Angulimal the ogre.
These are the lore of the rings I have heard of..

the perfect is yet to come..

the perfect is yet to come..
varṇaprakarṣe sati karṇikāre dunoti nirgandhatayā sma cetaḥ|
prāyeṇa sāmagryavidhau guṇānāṁ parāṅgmukhī viśvasṛjaḥ pravṛttiḥ||
kālidāsapraṇīte kumārasambhave mahākavye 3-26
----------
A very interesting quote from Kumarasambhavam of Kalidasa.. Sargam 3
--------------
The yajna of Daksha is over.. and Mother Sati has immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.. Carrying her burning body the crying Rudra ran across the length and breadth of india, and Vishnu followed him to pacify him.. in vain.. As rudra was running helter skelter, vishnu sent his discus again and again and cut down parts of the burning body of Sati the Dakhaayani , and wherever a part fell becam a holy Shakthi Sthala in India.. Thus Her body covers the entire hallowed land of Bharatha Varsha.
Shiva whose mind became almost blank after losing the Shakthi, is in solemn penance.. indifferent to everything.
The enemies of the gods are on the increase and only the Son born to Shiva can conquer them and restore peace for the Devas..
Shiva who is single now after the tragic fire accident to Mother Sati, and is singularly averse to any external attention or pleasure had to be united with the Divine mother so that the Divine couple can beget a worthy son.
To achieve this object the penance of Shiva is to be broken.. and he has to be brought back to lovely worldly thoughts.
Sati is already reborn as Uma the darling daughter of Himavan.. And Shiva is doing penace nearby in the beautiful valley of Himavan..
The Devas depute the god of love Kamadaeva, on a mission to stir up the meditative Lord Shiva from his penance..
It is indeed a risky job..
The Lord can be quite destructive if he is disturbed against his will..
But Kamadeva, the Manmatha has no choice..
He had to send his flowery darts on the Lord in meditation , even at the risk of his own life..
The God of love Kamadeva sets out on his mission in the company of his lovely wife Rati, and his constant companion, Madhava..
They enter the forest where the Lord is doing penance.. It is spring time..
As they enter the forest they see the Karnikara.. Kanikkonna കണിക്കൊന്ന Konnai. in full bloom with golden yellow flowers all over.. the flowers covering the trees even submerging the green leaves, and covering the entire area with the beauty of the golden colour of the flowers..
But then the poet finds that the Creator Brahma never endows perfection to anything..
The spring is beautiful..
The flowers are beautiful to watch..
In that perfect backdrop,
it would have been a befitting tribute to nature if these attractive flowers were endowed with catching fragrance too..
But that was not to be so..
The flowers did not have any fragrance..
---------------
The meaning of the slokam is
========-
On seeing the play of golden colour lighting up the Karnikara flowers the mind of the viewer while being ecstatic at the beauty, becomes inexplicably sad because of the thought that these beauties are not endowed with fragrance..
One is tempted to think regretfully of quirkly reluctance of the Creator Brahma in hol endowing perfection or completeness in any of his creations..
==========
Yes, God has not created anything as perfect..Perhaps he reserves the perfection for himself.. or pehaps for his final creation which is yet to come..
--------
The story continues.. Kamadeva sends his dart of flowers on the Lord, the lord opens his eyes in anger.. the lord of love is turned to ashes..
But then the mind of the lord Shiva stirs.. in time He meets Uma doing penacnce in the same forest.. He marries Her.. The son Kumara is born..
Kumara or Karthikeya is anointed as the commander in Chief of the army of Gods.. He defeats the demons like Tharaka and restores peace and plenty for the Gods..
The pathetic lamenatations of Rati.. the heart rending cries that reverberated the valleys of Himalyas.. after her beautiful husband Kamadeva is burnt to ashes.. converted to beautiful verses called Rathivilaapam.. is one of the classical situations of pathos in the annals of Sanskrit literature.. or for that matter any type of poetry ever written..
Regards.

The above slokam is from the great

Daksinamoorthy Stotram created by Shankara Bhagavatpada, the Acharya Swami.

The Lord Dakshinaamoorthy shines forth in eight forms that would cover all the moving and non moving objects.. 1 The earth, 2 the water 3. The fire 4. The Air 5.The Sky 6. The sun 7 The moon and 8. The living human self.. There is nothing else existing here apart from the all pervading Supreme one and no one who has the faculty of perception could know of anything other than His form in anything that is manifest in the universe.. Our pranams now here, to that resplendent form of the supreme Guru Dakshinamoorthy

The Ashtamoorthy swaroopa of Lord Shiva and Dakshinamamoorthy reveals that the Lord Himself is appearing in the shape of all moving and immobile things.

Kalidasa in the opening stanza of Abhijnana Shakuntalam too echoed this very same idea with minor variations .

who is the first among creations..water,

who takes oblations properly made to gods..agni,

which is the offering in yajna the havis,

who is the person making oblation.. brahmana,

who knows the past and future.. time,

who is the medium of hearing and sustains the life of all beings..air,

who pervades the whole universe, the teja in the shape of akasha,

and

who as the prakriti is the mother for all beings..the mother earth...

Lord Ashtamurthi the

Shiva who manifests in these eight forms may protect us.

The very idea of Pantheistic forms of the Lord are put forth in the great chapter Shatarudriyam or Sri Rudram appearing in Yajurvedam too..

note

The Ashtamoorthy tattwa  discussed in  the Dakshinamurthy stotram  I quoted earlier  is intended for the seeker  for Upasana of Sadashiva the Brahmaatmatattva in the following manner

tattvasudhā  svayaṁprakāśayatīndrapādakṛtam||

The seeker should  consider that the five elements with which his body is made  is in unison with the divine body of Sadashiva consisting of the the five elements pervading everything,  that the prana and apana within him are the Sun and the Moon existing outside as the manifestation of Sadashiva, and that he is identifying himself with the Lord Shiva.  When the seeker contemplates in this manner with utter concentration and sincerity of purpose, He become endowed with the Lordship of everything  and enjoys life when he is alive and finally he becomes the recepient  of all knowledge of truth, which is defined as direct realization,  he attains emancipation or Moksham..

This is from the commentary of tattwasudha of svayamprakashayateendra

A very thought provoking couplet from Kalidasa's Drama Abhijnaana Shakuntalam
Many people and objects in this world are very powerful, having great potential for causing danger.. Often when such people or objects are left to themselves, they may remain quiet and harmless. But if someone tries to provoke them, the results could be disastrous.

The meaning of the Slokam is

When the logs or placed in an oven or fireplace is moved, the quiet fire flares up
When irritatated or disturbed, a cobra raises up spreading its hood wide
Maybe, the capable and strong persons exhibit their real power when they are enraged.

“Wake not a sleeping lion” is a very famous proverb. Don’t ask for trouble. It’s safer to leave things as they are.

Vintage Kalidasa.. in Raghuvamsam..

The marriage ceremony of the young and beautiful couple Princes Aja and Princess Indumati is described.

The couple is doing circumambulation of the lighted fire, holding hand with so much of fondness, the couple looks so inseparable like the day and the night.. which just appear or happen without any interruption, as the day just disappears behind the Meru mountain and the night appears seamlessly.. and there is no point of break of separation..
Yes, there is no point of separation for the souls in love.. That should be the spirit of Valentines day..
