words are really fun.. let us see some words ending in -un and prefixed with different single alphabets

bun.. defence against hunger

fun....defence against depression

gun.. defence against physical attack

nun... usually should not require defence but can be a defence against sin

pun...defence against brashness.. tell something offensive without appearing to be offensive .. fun which is rubbed in not always pleasingly..

run... the best defence for anyone chased but police, dog, snake, wife, .. also effective defence against fat cholesterol, diabetes..

sun.. the best defence against cold, ailment and even death

Maybe there are more -uns.

All that we can do is that we have to make an attempt to live without blemish during our living hours,.. 

We have to live properly even when we face trying situations like the one that confronts us presently.. 

If life is just affluence, fun and frolic all of us can dance for ever like jokers and buffoons.

But quality life is meant for mature people. 

It is not the situation one faces that defines the quality of life. 

It is just the way we tackle the situations that evaluates the fact whether we have lived a worthy life. 

 Life might cease to exist any moment. 

 But we should be able to raise our heads in pride and say that we have lived well during the time we were alive.

"Tomorrow, do your worst..But I have lived today"

Shankaras philosophy is great not because he was young..It was sublime for its intrinsic worth.

We need not be afraid of having some knowledge of philosophy even at the young age.. But we have to really be apprehensive if our mindset tends to use the philosophy and ancient lore as a roadblock to the wholesome progress of the individual.. 

It will a nice thing to understand that if we go by the chronology of things in Bharatham, the age of Arjuna and Krishna the blessed lord should be anywhere near sixty years when gita was discussed.. 

In gita itself it is said... Sarvadharmaan parityajya maam ekam sharanam vraja... after giving up all the ordinary rules, you come to me and take refuge in me, said the Lord in Gita.. this giving up essentially implies that one should have understood and practiced the usual laws before turning to spirituality.. 

We are always instructed that vanaprastam and sannyasam comes after brahmacharyam and grihasta ashramas.. and the students of the scriptures and especially gita tend to be influenced by some catchy slokams in chapter 2 .. Vasaamsi jeernaani.., naayam hanthi na hanyate, etc..

These are only thoughts at a higher plane.. 

If one thinks that a man just gives up his old body like old clothes and takes up a new life just like wearing a new set of clothes.. he must also understand that a person who is too young cannot afford to give up the body.. the suit is too fresh the tailor. and too expensive to give up when it is so new...and the statement of the Lord that one who thinks that one is the killer and the victim as being killed does not understand that neither he is the killer nor the person is the one who is killed, is not a licence to kill.. quoting Geetha one cannot take a gun and shoot another..if he does so he will find himself either with a rope around his neck or in lunatic asylum.. 

As far as "philosophy" is concerned, the maxim that old is gold is very significant (of course it does not logically follow that every old man is a philosopher or a mature soul...see the oldies like me in FB to prove the point). Take the life of the blessed Lord Himself.. it was mostly fun and frolic for him in His youth, and administration of a country in his productive years..He did not sit all along doing penance and yoga or meditation..

And to understand Gita in its proper dimensions, even a full lifetime of contemplation and practicce with discipline should be inadequate.. so if a youth is preaching too much, he is either showing off, or he is not mature enough..

See, even the ordinary rules of the land prescribes certain age limits for key posts.. The president of India should be of the age of 35 in the least.And it is not just a coincidence that we find most of the learned persons having grey hair.

I do not say it is wrong to study Gita and Scriptures at young ages, but I feel in all honesty that the real impact of such great thoughts requires a gestation period of at least half a century to become really effective.

With due respects to the youth, I have to confess that many of the posts by youngsters in these social fora about what they delude themselves as spirituality pass the muster mainly because such posts are seen and liked by only their peers and persons like me who are immature for their age or pretend to themselves that they are young. We rarely get any mature posts around here.

And Shankara.. the story of Shankara consists partly of facts and partly of fiction.. Shankaras philosophy is great not because he was young..It was sublime for its intrinsic worth..

To keep the mouth shut is the best lesson in dental care..

If a fact is too obvious, we need not discuss it at all..

Discussion often generates doubts and uncertainties even on issues which are obvious.

 Discussion often tends to encourage people to compare data, distort data, and ends up in argument.. 

and when we start arguing we take up the spirit of argument and most often forget the subject altogether.. (and this fact is well known to lawyers)

Not to contradict is diplomacy.. 

In an argument usually we lose and we lost some friends too.. 

At least we can retain friends by not arguing..

When we make a point, we start to look for anyone who opposes it, and our dislike increases when our critic is right in taking an opposite view and we know he is right..

Keeping quiet is nice business.

And going on telling "Jai ho" "yes, Sir" is the most profitable trade for anyone.. One can earn profit there without any capital or investment.

To have faith in that God, we do not require any religion or any rituals.

Why do not we try to understand that God is just the entity.. representing all that is good, great, loveable, sublime, mercliful, and in short all that is not evil or treacherous..

In fact the principle of God was conceived by man to tell that alone..

Names, shapes, rituals, really do not matter..

Who can fight in the name of that God?

I have to defend my own language..

I learnt my first letters in Malayalam..

And She has carried me to this level..

Most of the PIs or Palakkad Iyers in Kerala may not be able to read or write Tamil... they just speak a Tamil of sorts..

.However, an Iyer in Kerala has grown with Malayalam for almost thousand years.

For us, Tamil and Malayalam are for us like Devaki and Yasodha.. But cannot say which is Devaki and which is Yasodha.

Moreover the distinction is not necessary.

We are having two mothers.

And the mother Vidya manifests herself as Akshara and Aayudham.. without these two her children cannot live a wholesome life..

Aayudham means any implement and include weapons too,,

Anyway all work implements are Aayudhams..

My knowledge in anything in this world including that in taxation became realistic only after I retired..

The moment we enter the Government office as employees, whatever may be our status, we just change, and wear a mantle of superiority, and just delude ourselves that the world, the Government and all things under the sun just are in their proper places only because of our presence..

When we watch with some glee and with a lot of jealousy that everything runs well even without our presence, then alone the delusion is removed.. and we start living..

I think I was living in a blunder-land from age 22 to 60.

Of course, we start to face the realities of life after we demit our offices and initially we might be baffled..But then life is an efficient teacher.

Retired life is a period where we can at least try to prove our worth even a little without any tags of authority attached..

My reading, even in taxation has been much wider after I retired.. My perspectives are also very fair and balanced after leaving the office( at least I think so)..

So I feel retirement is a blessing of sorts

Many choices in raw life are just made for want of any alternative..

We commit many blunders, even willful ones.. maybe to eke out a livelihood, to have some peace and so on..

The academic definitions are all okay when one is in the comfort zone..

Many acts we realize as blunders immediately on commission.. but they hang on our necks for ever and ever...

I can list thousands of such blunders, but everyone knows about these even though they do not speak out..

This is our life, raw life, not what is defined in puranas or itihasas or defined by gurus and godmen, where we have plod ahead just applying all trial and error methods..

Only one who has not attempted to do anything can claim that he has not committed any blunders..

Vaikhanasam.. the commentaries of Vedas by the likes of Sayana and Bhattabhaskara, commentaries on Puranam by the likes of Sridhara and on Upanishads and Vedanta by Desika Shankara and Madhva and so on.. 

at least in the minimum way..

The tantric texts of the East Like Calcutta, of the North like Tibet and Kashmir have been unearthed and published with commentaries by many and the pioneer in this filed is Arthur Avlon.. Then the Southern Shaktha school is spearheaded by the greats like Bhaskararaya.. and numerous tantrics of kerala..

Peripheral links can only impress.. but serve little purpose for the real seeker..

manthras and their effect

The efficacy of the mantra is a different issue from the consideration of the meaning of the mantra..

It cannot be said that Puranas and epics are just stories, because history starts from the period of myths and often the activities of an era is reconstructed from such myths..

 Claiming that some practices are authentic when one likes them and dismissing certain things as fiction just because it is not according to ones own notions is not conducive to objectivity... 

For one person Periyavaal may be great and for another some other personality may be great.. 

A story or superstition does not become valid just because Periyaval or anyone just said it..

The Naradas statement is in conformity with Kalisantharana Upanishad, but that Upanishad, although some Vaishava sect would take it as gospel truth, is not accepted among the principal upanishads..

 If I know Sanskrit and am crafty enough I can also coin a mantram and call it authentic.. 

Moolamantrams of certain man gods even have appeared.

And in one place it was stated that the Hare Rama mantram was not of much phonetic importance like kleem etc.. 

But what is the basis to claim that only strange words will have phonetic impact..?

Kleem or Hreem as well as Hare Rama etc both may be having tantric value or both may be of little use.. But to claim that one type is better than the other at one place does not appear to be right..

One can make an argument.. but a consistent view should be taken.. At least I believe so..

I have found that after serving under Government for about 37 years. and I know my bosses were kind to be to a fault..

The idealism, just dries up as we see things happen... Even for the heinous criminal offences, punishments are avoided if it can be helped..Punishment is a corrective measure..not a destructive one..

Preponderance probability in service law is the biggest white lie I have seen in my experience..

Some use the holes in the system enrich themselves, some others do it to help..

But holes are there always for rats or rabbits to live..

It is for us to decide whether there should be rats or rabbits.

The paperwork and the humiliation of vigilance actions by themselves sap almost everything form the employees..

If such actions do not create any impact, then the victim is a seasoned thug.. He is incorrigible..

And the best punishment for such people would be through whiplashes.. and there is no rule which can empower anyone to do that..

God has not created all the food on his earth just to be eaten by me or you alone...

There are loads of food and and loads of people..

In fact all can eat to their tummies fill and still there will be a lot left..

Indeed, it takes a lot of reading, labour and recall from past experiences to prepare and present writeups, even if it merely to the social media..

Indian thought system gives great stress to quiscent state of mind

 

In Indian ideas on psychology and meditation, a state of cessation of thoughts is envisaged..

Even for the theories of conscious and subconscious and superconscious states enumerated by western psychological theories, we have no concrete evidence.. and there can be no concrete evidence in this matter because the measuring rod is the mind and the thing measured too is the mind..

There can be theories at macro levels..

But in very subtle matters only experiences.. can guide.. and the recording or documentation of such experiences can vary, and can be faulty too.. The error factors abound.

But the research by Indian seers on the mind and thoughts advanced to dizzying levels of insights eons prior to the time when even the existence of the art and science of psychology was faintly recongnized by others..

Even in physics,,( I mean the most advanced western science of theoretical physics) whether enegy gets transmitted in waves of electrical and magnetic variation or whether the energy is transmitted in disjointed quanta is not yet certain.

So if we take cue from that uncertainty principle, even if there is a subconscious mind, how can we be sure that that subconscious mind is functioning continuously in in periodic bouts of activity and inactivity?

Suffice to say that the Indian thought system gives great stress to quiscent state of mind.. bereft of all activity.. And the Yoga.. the chittavrittinirodha .. of patanjali and others aim at that state.

where is the guarantee that Gods will give anything we ask for.. ?

I have a lot of fond hopes or desires and expectations..

May be silly..

The plants around in my house like Mandarams, Chemparuthi, Thechi, should give a lot of flowers dailly

There should be a lot of Thulasi plants and they should grow well

There should be a bilvam plant

Yes then I can have a lot of flowers to offer pooja to my Gods..

I would love to offer a lot of tasty food and fruits as naivedyam..

Is it that I want to pray and get back a lot from the gods..?

Not really..

What is there to get?

And where is the guarantee that Gods will give anything we ask for.. ?

Usually they do not give..

But then these tiny idols, and pictures are so dear to me..

Many of them are offered pooja even before I was born..

Worshipped by father and grandfather.. loved by them

They are just a part of me

Whether I like it or not, I love them..

The matter is so simple..
