Lord Shiva the Shankara is completely white all around

गात्रं भस्मसितं सितञ्च हसितं हस्ते कपालं सितं
खट्वाङ्गश्च सितं सितश्च वृषभः कर्णे सिते कुण्डले।

His whole body is covered with holy ashes of sprakling white colour
He gives out a dazzlingly white smile
He holds a spotlessly white skull in His hands
His holy seat, the Kailasa is of shiningly white colour
His mount, the Vrishabha bull is having a clean white colour
He wears a pair of eardrops which are blemishlessly white
The River Ganga seated in his matted hair is giving out clean white
bubbling foam
The water oozing out of his matted hair again is brillianltly white
The crescent moon adorning his hair is shining forth in resplendently white shine
Thus this Lord Shiva the Shankara is completely white all around..
May that Lord of brilliantly unimpeachable glory annihilate my sins and bless me with all wealth, prosperity and grace.

salutations to Lord Shiva the protector of our journey

salutations to Lord Shiva the protector of our journey..
journey in the day to day life as well as journey in this life of Karma, Jnana and bhakthi,
Whose crown tips on His forehead.. (or the crowns of those kings and gods who prostrate before him are tipped low on their foreheads),
By the shot of fire from whose third eye that wretch cupid with five arrows was burnt down..(meaning His Grace burns away the feelings of Lust and avarice)
Who with his potent trident smashed to dust the cities of myriads of the demons who opposed Him
who is the embodiment of purity (Shuddha Sattwam)
who has the crescent half moon shining in his matted hair
This is one of the five stanzas of Margabhandu Stotram. penned by Appayya Deekshita. in praise of the Lord of Lords, Shambu the Parameshwara ( no names and epithets are sufficient to identify the infinite being that He is)

legends and stories clash.. , may be that the Poison drinking episode happened on the marriage day..

dhruvan's daddy had two wives
and uma choked shiva
legends and stories clash.. One explanation, without much reasoning may be that the Poison drinking episode happened on the marriage day..
But if the news is spread, the maamis will make it a habit to choke the husbands by the throat on the wedding day.. So it is better not to raise the issue if we do want keep our throats safe..
In households with multiple wives , each woman tried to have her offspring close to the father and would not hesitate to drive away the children of the other wives.. That is a survival tatctic

choking and throttling

Lord Shiva is so great and is endowed with so much of equanimity that for him a happy occasion of getting married and a situation where he had to consume poison were both celebration ..
On the other hand, as every married man would have felt at some stage in life there is hardly any difference between getting married and drinking poison..
And see how the brother and sister Parvahy and Vishnu managed the affair.. While the lady tried to strangle by holding neck, her brother closed the mouth of the victim so that no cries are heard..

Shivoham shivoham

Shivoham shivoham
nothing wrong in visiting a temple or worshiping an idol..
the Divine One is present there too,
and those who visit also carry the thought of Him usually when they visit...
Sivaanandalahari - 12* of Shankara
"whether one resides in a far off cave or in a residential flat,
in the open ground or inside a forest or on the top of a mountain,
in water or in fire...
is the place of residence really matter?
Oh Lord Shambu, if one's inner spirit is always fixed at your feet,
then He is yoga,
He is the yogi,
and he is enjoying the greatest comforts.. "
So ultimately for the one who can see God everywhere,
the idol and temple are also okay..
For a person not so disposed, no place is okay...
A story is told of Avvaiyaar the Lady Saint of Tamil..
Once she was passing through a village and she was tired walking for long in hot sun..
She saw a temple of Shiva.. and the mandapam was open..
She went there, and rested there sprawling her tired legs pointing to wards the sanctum.. where Shivalingam was consecrated..
Someone came and asked..
"Old lady, why are you showing your feet to the lord? "
She replied..
" Son, just show me a direction where I can place my feet and that will not point towards that eternal Shiva.."
Here Shiva is the universal Lord, and forget any philosophy or religion involved..
Still that is the truth..
Of course, this is not to say we should show our feet to the idol in the temple..
Just only a reminder that we can feel the presence of the Divine everywhere.

May the benign and enigmatic smile of that arch enemy of Kamadeva, Lord Shiva bring all grace and prosperity to all of us
The smile, that erupted from His lips as he held the feet of Uma the daughter of the sturdy mountain Himavan, with his hands as soft as a lotus flower and her feet too so soft like another lotus.. The Lord was lifting her feet to be place it on a stone signifying marital fidelity..
What a study in contrast… The mother is tough, she is the daughter of the mountain. The Lord is tough. He simply burned off Kamadeva once. But He uses all the softness of His hand not to cause any sort of discomfort to the soft foot of Uma..
The bride’s foot is placed on stone by the groom to signify that the bride would be so sincere and steadfast and solid in her fidelity for the husband. As solid as the rock. But here Mother Uma is the daughter of the Mountain Himavana herself.. Who can be more solid?
The toughest, the eternal pair are just playing the role of a newly married couple… That brings a secret smile on the face of the Lord.. That is natural.
May that eternal couple, Uma Maheshvara bless us.

And the Lord adorns his hair with half of the moon
Indeed He is Chandrasekhara by all means.
Pranams to that Supremely benevolent Shiva

musings 238

Saw some hot debate and vehement assertion about the shape of the Divine being..
My views on the issue..
It is rather futile to interpret the greatness of the Divine.. Kalidasa Said in Kumarasambhavam that the shape of the one who has assumed his presence everywhere in the Universe is not possible...
-------------
may I be permitted to quote from what I wrote elsewhere.
tan me manaH Shivasankalpamasthu ..
Some fond thoughts about the supreme greatness of Lord Siva Crosses my mind on the sivaratri eve.
." He is having nothing, as we could see that he sets out with a begging bowl,
but he is the source of all wealth and prosperity in the universe,
he is the master of the three worlds but neither his parentage nor his permanent residence could be certified
,He is of very fearful form they say but he is the meekest of the meekt, Shiva...there is nobody who could divine the reality of this Pinakapani."..
Kalidasa again says,
" vibooshnodhbaasi pinadhdha bogi vaa gajaajinaalambi dukoola dhari vaa kapali vaa syat adhava indusekharam, na visvamooheh avadhaaryathey vapuh-"-
विभूषणोद्भासि पिनद्धभोगि वा गजाजिनालम्बि दुकूलधारि वा।
कपालि वा स्यादथवेन्दुशेखरम् न विश्वमूर्तेरवधार्यते वपुः॥
vibhūṣaṇodbhāsi pinaddhabhogi vā gajājinālambi dukūladhāri vā|
kapāli vā syādathavenduśekharam na viśvamūrteravadhāryate vapuḥ||
"He is adorned in priceless ornaments sometimes,
but at other times he is just standing there with snakes tied around every part of his body as ornaments,
he uses the skin of a just killed elephant to cover his body at times, but he is often adorned in silk clothes also,
He goes around with a skull in hand for begging often but at other times the moon, the source of all aiswarya in its crescent form adorns his matted hair... how can we understand the physical make up of this viswamoorthy?
Amongst brhamins smaarthas predominate and in sankapa everywhere in India, whether it is siva pooja or vishnupooja, yaga or yagna, may be even a cremation of a sraadha we start the sankalpa with "mamopatha samastha durithakshaya dwaaraa sree Parameswara preethyartham..
" ममोपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थम्
mamopātta samasta duritakṣayadvārā śrī parameśvara prītyartham
so we do everthing in his name.
Thinking of it, we are simply dependent on Siva from the moment we are born to our last breath and beyond that.
NAMAH SIVAYA

Lingam itself means something which is concealed or which is difficult to understand..
Man cannot definitely give shape to something he cannot conceive..
So he gave an assumed shape..
Maybe a sphere or a cylinder with a sphere on the flat edges was an easy form to conceive.. so he presumed the deity in that form..
The Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas are honest..
They would record only what they have observed..
So we can be sure that they saw and felt the presence of Shiva in that shape.. and started worship of the lingam.
The divine being is either manifesting in all shapes or in reality he is having no shape..
In rudram we say.. viroopebhyo vishvaroopebhyaH cha namo..विरूपेभ्यो विश्वरूपेभ्यः चा नम pranams to the ones ( the eleven rudras) with no shape and the ones with the entire universe as their shape..
elsewhere in rudram we say.. yo rudro vishvaa bhuvanaa aavivesha..यो रुद्रो विश्वा भुवनाविवेश that rudra who entered or manifested in everything on earth and the universe..
Let me ask this question
Who are we to explain the shape of the Supreme Being.. be it Hindus or others?
Of course respectful reference to the divine shape can be understood even if such interpretations are shortsighted..
After all He is present in everything.. so any shape is His shape
But assertion and hot debate on the shape of God.. is just arrogance, nonsense and blashphemy..

He is not having any fear for the potent venom that is spewed by Vasuki, the serpent encircling His neck
At the same time He is not having and special preference for the ambrosia that fills the moon occupying his matted hair
He is not bothered about the pollution that might be caused by contact with the human skull that he wields in his hands
However he is not overly conscious of the purity that is inherent in the holy waters of Ganga that He holds in his locks
He is not ashamed or excessively embarrassed about the ashes from funeral pyres that covers His whole body
But he is not given to any special feeling of ecstasy for being contacting the breasts of that damsel Gauri
Yes, He is atmaaraama, he is the epitome of equanimity. Pleasures do not excite Him, Adversities do not affect Him in any way. He is ever immersed in the thoughts of Supreme Brahman… that is none other than Himself.
May that Hara, the Shankara protect you.

Pranams to that Shambhu, the Shankara
Who is that Shambu? How to identify Him
True, He is somebody, He must be somebody
We worship that somebody
All the qualities and attributes of any being, anything is to be identified through comparison with the qualities possessed by Him .
How to compare and identify the qualities and attributes possessed by Him, how to identify Him
He cannot be identified through any comparison..
He is the standard for comparison for everything
So He is there, but we cannot spot Him.
But whom else have we to worship ?
NamaH Shivaaya
Pranams to the one without comparison, Pranams to the one who cannot be identified but He can only be worshipped.

Shiva

Shiva is the eternal and unconquerable flame..
and the pure ashes(bhasma) are something which the flame cannot destroy..
And they complement each other..
we cannot conceive Shiva without ashes and ashes are nothing without Shiva..
Everything else in matter except the ashes have been consumed by the flame that is Shiva
And Shiva loves those leftovers.. the ashes,
maybe because it is all that he cannot conquer..
No disrespect to Shankara..the supreme.. but a random thought

He is standing solid and sturdy as Sthaanu Naatha, that way he is a tree without any roots,
His son Karthikeya is born in the Visakha Star, and since Visakha also means without branches, He is a tree having no branches,
His darling wife Uma is called Aparna because she did penance to get the Lord as Husband by starving and refusing even to eat a single leaf, and that way Her lord is a tree without leaves too.
However the Lord is shining forth in full bloom through flowers brought to Him by his devotees and pleased by that and through His infinite mercy he is producing large quantities of fruits by way of generous boons..
It is indeed a strange phenomenon.
The rootless, branchless, leafless tree that is Lord Shankara, pleased by flowers brought to Him by His devotees produces infinite quantity of fruits by way of bounteous boons.

Lord Shiva the Supreme Mahadeva is called Astamurthy because He is manifesting Himself in eight forms which constitute the fundamental ingredients or objects of all that is present in this Universe.
In Bhavishya Puranam the eight most famous names of the Lord and their forms are narrated as listed above.
The name Sharva represents the Earth
The name Bhava stands for Water
The name Rudra is equivalent to the Divine form of the Lord in the shape of Fire
The name Ugra represents the manifestation of the Lord as Wind
The name Bhima stands for the Akasha or Ether
The name Pashupathi denotes the manifestation of the Supreme Lord as the performer of the Yajna, the Yajamana Himself
The name Mahadeva reveals His form as Soma, the Moon
The name Ishana is the epithet that reveals Him as the Soul of the Sun
Yes, the Lord Runs the Universe as a Yajna, He Himself engaging as Yajamana in the presence of Sun and the Moon and the Panchabootas.. Prithvi, Ap, Teja, Vaayu and Aakaasha.

Hanuman is the avatar of lord Shiva..

Someone raises the question as to whether there is any statement in Ramayanam that Hanuman is the avatar of lord Shiva..
I can reply only like this.
------------------------------------
There are varying perceptions on this..
The birth and growth of Hanuman is part of Uttarakandam of Ramayana ..
and some treat Uttarakandam not as part of the mainstream Ramayanam at all
Then the level of Avataram.. it can be full avataram, part avataram, and even lesser avatarams..
Parashurama too is considered a partial avataram of Vishnu.
But he was defeated by Rama who is also a avatar of Vishunu.
In uttarakandam, the role of Bhagavan Shiva in the birth of Anjaneya is clearly stated...
and many believers trust that Anjaneya is the incarnation of Shiva..
And a scene in Sundarakandam where Ravana, is led to ponder whether the monkey Hanuman who was sitting in front of him was Bhagavan Nandi himself..
I answer the question in this perspective ..
But please note..
The puranas and itihasas are so wide they cover vast specte.. having so many versions..
Most of the inferences drawn will be from intelligent deductions from the contents of various texts and versions and also from the commentaries given by scholars and seers who lived over centuries..
If you are trying to argue out a fact in any one manner about the veracity of any of the contents of the ancient puranas and itihasas, you are likely to reach nowhere.. except creating controversies..
I would simply say I trust Hanuman was an incarnation of Lord Shambhu..
Even if I just assert that it is just my faith, I am not wrong in that..
Various scholars on Ramayanam have repeatedly asserted the power of Shiva in Hanuman..
And no one has ever denied that fact.. Is that not good enough?

हराश्लिष्टगात्रम् भजे बालमूर्तिम्

I could not erase this scene just repeatedly running in my mind as if it is a video picture.. and the feeling is simply sweet..
That cute boy is nestling in the lap of his mother..
The best,
the most beautiful
the most affectionate mother anyone could have..
No one knows who is more fortunate,, that boy who has the chance to sit in the lap of that mother..
Or that mother who had this boy playing in her lap..
The question can never be answered
The boy's father,
the best father,
who is the father for everyone and who has no father,
is just calling the boy for an embrace...
And the boy is simply leaping forth to get himself engulfed in a tight embrace of that father..
Here there is no doubt as to who is more fortunate..
It is the boy..
The ultimate purpose in the life of any living being is to just dissolve Himself in that embrace.. the embrace of that father
The mother is Uma the Parvathi
The father is Shankara
and the boy is Skanda..the Karhikeya
This is a scene presented by Aadishankara in his Subramania Bhujanam..
Shankara must have known the embrace Himself.. After all He was both the Aach;arya Shankara and Lord Shankara too..

I worship that Divine being Kumara, the Skanda, who has assumed the form of a child. While nestling in the lap of His mother Uma, his father Shankara is beckoning him with a lot of love to give an embrace.. And immediately the boy just leaps and reaches the bosom of His father where H e is consigned in a very tight embrace of the one who is the destroyer of all the sins of all beings, the Hara..
What an Imagery... Feel truly blessed
It is the divine presence of Somaaskanda Parameshvara..

I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva. Who is the angry and intensely emotional Rudra, ,
who is the protector and lord of all living beings,
who stands like a huge pillar or a column,
whose neck is coured dark blue because of the Halahala poison lodged the, who is the beloved lord of Uma .
and how can death do anything to me?--1
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, who is having a neck of black hue and who is holding Kala the god of death on the throat, who is the embodiment of time, who manifests himself as the destructive five at the close of time, who has destroyed the lord of death,--
and how can death do anything to me?--2
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, who manifest as Vaamadeva ( one of the five forms of Shiva, other being Sadhyojatam, Tatpurusham, Eashaanam and Aghoram),
who is the most exalted among all gods,
who is the one and only possessor and controller of the universe,
who is the father and the preceptor for the whole universe, --
and how can death do anything to me?--3
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, who is the God for all gods,
who is the controller of the universe,
who is the one who looks after the welfare of the gods (eesha),
who is having a huge bull as his flag insignia.. --
and how can death do anything to me?--4
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, who has smeared ashes on all his limbs,
who is adorned with ornaments of myriad kinds, --
and how can death do anything to me?--5
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva who is presenting Himself with a body of which half of it of a woman.( arthanaareeswara.. he gifted half of His body to Uma),
who is the life breath of that affectionate mother Uma Parvathi, --
and how can death do anything to me?--6
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, in whose matted locks, the great river Ganga is staying out of deep love, who has also give shelter to the crescent moon near his head,
who as Shankara provides all that is good for everyone,
who wields a trident..
and how can death do anything to me?--7
I prostrate placing my head in surrender on the ground before Lord Shiva, who is capable of giving us happy life in heaven and also complete emancipation from all human attachment and escape from birth-death cycle ( this is called moksham) ,
who, as the single powerful deity, created, protects and destroys all things in the universe, .
and how can death do anything to me?--8
The octet is written by Sage Markandeya ( who attained immortality by the Grace of Shankara),..If one reads or chants this in the presence of the Lord, there is no fear of death for him. And there can never be any fear for him from fire or thieves and robbers.--9
Salutations to Shiva..
Who is present in the company of Amba.. Uma Parvathi
Who is the destroyer of all sins ( Hari also means Vishnu.. Shiva and Vishnu are same.. )
Who is the supreme Soul
Who is the destroyer of all woes of those who adore his lotus feet
Who is the leader of all yogins--10
